ALLEGRO CLASSICAL WELCOMES

OPMC Classics

p. 35

With OPMC Classics, the Monte Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra launches its own recording label! The orchestra was founded in 1856 and gave its first concert with an ensemble of 15 musicians. By 1874, the orchestra had increased in size to 70 musicians. In 1953, Prince Rainier III had ordered the renaming of the ensemble to L’Orchestre National de l’Opéra de Monte-Carlo. It acquired its current name in 1980, again through Rainier III. The orchestra’s most recent principal conductor was Yakov Kreizberg, who held the post until his passing in March 2011. The label’s debut release features four works by Igor Stravinsky, all of which featured in the orchestra’s 2009/2010 season. OPMC Classics comes to Allegro Classical via Codaex.

Das Lied von der Erde (arr. Schoenberg/Rhien) Jane Irwin: mezzo-soprano/Peter Wedd: tenor/Manchester Camerata/Douglas Boyd: conductor MAHLER (arr. Schoenberg/Rhien): Das Lied von der Erde

Cat # AVR 2195 Price Code: Q (SRP $15.99) Number of Discs: 1 Jewel Case, Box Lot 25

Last year’s Mahler In Manchester festival was “a sensory experience like no other,” according to the Sunday Times, not least for the Manchester Camerata’s revelatory performance of Das Lied von der Erde in the scaled-down chamber version by Schoenberg. The chamber arrangement came about through Schoenberg’s Vienna-based Association for Private Musical Performances, founded in 1918. Conducted by Douglas Boyd, Manchester Camerata’s performance of this transcription loses nothing of the astonishing sonic allure of the original—an ideal memento of an enlightening festival celebrating the music of Mahler.

Portland Baroque Orchestra Monica Huggett: conductor Charles Daniels: tenor J.S. BACH: Saint John Passion, BWV 245 “Intoxicating … ranges from rough-edged celebration to pristine lament, giving a comprehensive picture of Baroque styles and moods.” — The New Yorker, Most Memorable Moments In Music 2010 (for AVR 2202) Monica Huggett has produced numerous best-selling and acclaimed recordings for Avie, notably the Grammy®-nominated Bach Orchestral Suites, which made the Top 10 of Billboard’s Traditional Classical Chart. This ear-opening version, Monica claims, restored Suite No. 2 to its original instrumentation. She makes a similar case with her new recording of Bach’s Saint John Passion, placing oboes where we typically hear flutes and arguing that Bach’s original score was produced during his early years in Leipzig, where flutes were unavailable to him. also available

Colorful, lively, and relaxed, Davide Cabassi plays Carnaval solo and the Piano Concerto alongside the Haydn Orchestra of Bolzano & Trento under Gustav Kuhn’s direction! The piano was an essential tool for Robert Schumann, both in his work as a composer and in his theoretical reflections. The continuing technical improvement of the instrument, through the expansion of its tonal and dynamic range, enhanced the available means of expression, and Schumann knew how to use them in practice and in theory.

Hearing Schumann! That was the underlying intention for these recordings of the composer’s four symphonies. The instrumentation of the Haydn Orchestra of Bolzano & Trento corresponds to the proportions Schumann had in mind for his compositions. Gustav Kuhn, the man conducting the orchestra ideally suited for this production, is an absolute Schumann expert. After Beethoven’s nine and Brahms’ four symphonies, which met with such delightful international response, this production is Col legno’s latest effort to transport the contemporary music of the past into the present with a brilliant new interpretation.

This ‘songbook’ is unique to the Schola Cantorum choristers of Tewkesbury Abbey—essentially, it’s a showcase for the Abbey trebles. This is evident most of all in the distinctive singing of 11-year-old Laurence Kilsby, whose gifts won him the BBC Chorister of the Year competition in 2009. On this recording, he features as soloist in two Shelley settings by Roger Quilter, the Bach/Gounod Ave Maria, and in John Ireland’s beautiful, sincerely-felt Passiontide motet Ex Ore Innocentium from 1944.

Release Date: January 10, 2012 Pilsen Philharmonic Orchestra Koji Kawamoto: conductor The Czech Nonet ASIA: Symphony No. 5 • Nonet Aside from a handful of cantorial pieces, and despite his fondness for setting vocal texts, Daniel Asia didn’t begin to explore his deep interest in Judaism and his Jewish identity in music until 1988, with his Celebration for baritone, chorus, brass, and organ. This work subsequently provided material for Asia’s Symphony No. 2, an evocation of Jewish prayer, penitence, and praise. After producing another two, purely abstract symphonies in the early 1990s, Asia turned his attention to other genres for the next 15 years. Then, in 2008, came his Symphony No. 5, “Of Songs & Psalms”—not only a return to the symphony, but also a return to exploring facets of Jewish identity via the symphonic medium. Asia’s Fifth, while hardly as histrionic as Bernstein’s, is similarly a work of questioning and unease, at least in part. It also gives Asia another opportunity to set poems by the American Paul Pines, whose work has been coupled to Asia’s music many times since the 1980s. The symphony was premiered in 2008 by the Tucson Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, George Hanson conducting, with soloists Kelly Anderson and Robert Swensen.

Estonian Heino Eller (1887–1970) is probably best known as the teacher of Arvo Pärt, but he was a prolific and original composer in his own right. His substantial output for piano—this series will contain seven CDs—was written over a period of six decades and thus reflects a range of styles. Taking the lyricism of Chopin and Grieg as its starting point, it combines the influence of Estonian folksong, Scriabin’s troubled harmonies, the epic northern coloring of Sibelius and, at times, Prokofiev’s motoric energy into an attractively individual manner.

This second CD, in a series of six presenting his complete violin works for the first time, combines brilliant display and expressive melody; the Otello Fantasy and Rossini Variations show Ernst developing Paganini’s inheritance, and the Boléro, Two Romances, and Pensées Fugitives show why he was such a favorite in Parisian salons.

The English composer Havergal Brian (1876–1972) is renowned for his 32 symphonies, 21 of them—written after his 80th birthday—constituting one of the most remarkable Indian summers in the history of music. It is less well known that Brian also composed five operas; since none of them has yet been staged, this CD reveals for the first time some of the remarkably inventive and powerful orchestral pieces hidden within those scores.

But he also made a musical contribution to the defense of the city, arranging a series of songs for voice, violin, and cello. The musicians then climbed into the back of a truck and were driven to the front, where they performed for the soldiers. The defiantly Russian insouciance of many of the songs, recorded here for the first time, must have brought a ray of hope and humor to the cold, hungry troops.

It is only to be expected that a Baroque orchestra like B’Rock would take up this project: right from the start it was the group’s aim to present not only Baroque music, but also 20th-century and new repertory. This results in a different, refreshing approach to early music, and one that is full of imagination.

The aim of this recording is to provide a few milestones among the works composed by Jaffrennou between 1997 and 2006. Three of these pieces combine electronics with the instrumental masses, the latter being quite variable, ranging from a trio in For Three to large forces (two ensembles of 15 musicians each) in Chronorythmie.

On the concert platform and on disc, Anne-Catherine Gillet radiates spontaneity, luminosity, and enthusiasm. It is impossible to remain impervious to the beauty of this new voice, accompanied with brio by the Liège Royal Philharmonic conducted by prominent maestro Paul Daniel.

Works by Capocci, Dubois, Guilmant & Saint-Saëns

J.S. BACH: Motets Nos. 1–6

The two organs featured on this disc came from the workshop of the great 19th century organ builder Aristide Cavaillé-Coll (1811–1899). The organ of St. Peter was inaugurated January 16, 1891, by Charles-Marie Widor. The organ of Conflans Chapel was bought in 1866 by the Little Seminar of Paris and transferred to Charenton-Le-Pont in 1911.

The Ensemble Vocal Jean Sourisse of Paris was founded in 1982 by leader Jean Sourisse, a pupil of Philippe Cailard, Michel Corboz, Eric Ericson, and Frieder Bernius. This chamber choir is composed of 20–25 singers, depending on the character of the works performed.

This album, the tenth volume in the Musical Heritage of the Jews of France collection released by the Fondation du Judaïsme Français, was recorded on the occasion of a concert of Jewish Baroque music organized by the Yuval Association as a tribute to its founder, Israel Adler. Interpreted by the Texto Ensemble, a professional choir of eight singers, these 13 compositions by Salamone Rossi, Abraham Caceres, and Giuseppe Lidarti constitute a unique testimony to the richness of this Jewish musical practice from the Baroque era up to the beginnings of the galant style. Includes booklet with richly documented liner notes in French and English.

Cuarteto Quiroga Aitor Hevia, Cibrán Sierra: violins Dénes Ludmány: viola Helena Poggio: cello HAYDN: Quartet in C, Op. 20, No. 2 • WEBERN: Langsamer Satz • Five Pieces for String Quartet, Op. 5 • SOLLIMA: Sonnets et rondeaux The award winning Cuarteto Quiroga—one of the boldest, most personal, and most individual protagonists of Europe’s new string quartet generation—presents a musical trip in four stages, on the theme of challenge! These four works are the “statements” of three composers confronted with the challenges of their time. Haydn’s Op. 20, No. 2 was one of his most interesting statements, in response to the challenge of integrating the old forms into a new style of music writing. Webern’s Langsamer Satz is the statement of a young composer facing the challenge of a musical language about to collapse, while his Op. 5 represents the statement of what he later saw as the “natural” way of writing new music. And finally we come to Giovanni Sollima, who has stated a brilliantly eclectic way of approaching the challenge of composition for a generation that cannot escape the influence of popular music.

Ramée Anthony Bailes: lute Lute pieces by Gallot & Mouton Despite being the two last important representatives of a school of lute playing dominated by Ennemond and Denis Gaultier, neither Jacques de Gallot nor Charles Mouton can be accused of simply “keeping the flame alive.” Though both publicly acknowledged their debt to the Gaultiers, their own music displays true originality. Of the two, Mouton’s music is nearest in style to that of the Gaultiers, and nowhere is this more evident than in the doubles composed to some of their courantes. Jacques de Gallot’s music, in contrast, represents a distinct departure from the earlier style. His pupil Johann Armand von Uffenbach illustrates the perfection of his music: “No harmony of any sort of music, be it as perfect as it may, can compare to that of this soloist.”

Maria Callas, Dino Dondi, Fiorenza Cossotto: vocal soloists Orchestra & Chorus of Teatro alla Scala Nino Sanzogno: conductor GLUCK: Ifigenia in Tauride (complete opera) The recent rebirth of interest in the masterpiece of Christoph von Gluck’s maturity, Ifigenia in Tauride, has proved that his art can still cast a powerful spell over audiences. For a long time, Orfeo ed Euridice was the single work by Gluck to keep a toehold in the repertory. It was during this period that Maria Callas undertook two adventurous forays into Gluck’s operas at La Scala: Alceste in 1954 (under Carlo Maria Giulini) and, in June 1957, Ifigenia in Tauride. These were, in fact, the only two productions of Gluck in which Callas participated—and that during some of the most pivotal years of her entire career, as the true scope of her artistry was gaining widespread recognition. As for the beleaguered Greek heroine, Callas gave only four performances of Iphigenia for the 1957 production, which concluded La Scala’s season. Its opening night is the basis for this recording. Live performance, Milan, June 1, 1957. Features original artwork by Rafal Olbinski, re-mastered sound, extensive booklet with historic photos, and complete libretto newly translated for this release.
