ALLEGRO CLASSICAL WELCOMES

Melodiya

p. 4–7

For 47 years, Melodiya has collected over 60,000 unique recordings including classical music, folklore, works by composers of the former Soviet republics, and masterpieces performed by outstanding Soviet conductors, ensembles, orchestras, and music theatres. Melodiya was founded in 1964 as a state-owned company for production, storage, and distribution of sound recordings. As a successor of the All-Union Studio of Gramophone Recording, Melodiya was the only sound recording company in the country until the disintegration of the Soviet Union. This disintegration could not help but have an impact on Melodiya’s activities, but in 2003 new impetus for development was linked with the coming of a young leadership team as a result of an open competition announced by the Ministry of Property Relations of the Russian Federation. Today, Melodiya is a fast-moving company that, on the one hand, tries to preserve its unique archives by restoring and releasing recordings of the Soviet era on modern media, and on the other hand, actively develops to meet all new conditions of the music market. Melodiya releases its recordings on CD, but plans to begin producing DVDs and vinyl as well. Melodiya comes to Allegro Classical via Codaex.

Heroic opera Taras Bulba was based on Gogol’s well-known story of the same name. After taking the composer ten years to finish, the premiere took place only after the great socialist revolution in October 1924. It has been conceived as a deeply national work, singing of the heroic feat of the people struggling for independence. Konstantin Simeonov (1910–1987) was an outstanding Soviet conductor and the People’s Artist of the USSR (1962), who had an illustrious career conducting many of the orchestras of the USSR.

David Oistrakh: violin Nicolai Petrov: piano USSR State Symphony Orchestra Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra Aram Khachaturian: conductor KHACHATURIAN: Violin Concerto in D minor • Piano Concerto in D-flat The second disc from the series Khachaturian Conducts Khachaturian includes two concertos for piano and orchestra played by Nikolai Petrov, and a concerto for violin and orchestra played by David Oistrakh. The piano concerto was written in 1936, when Khachaturian was a postgraduate student under teacher Nikolay Myaskovsky. He wanted to create somewhat of a symphony-concert expressing the spiritual world of the modern man, a piece deeply national in its language yet innovative in its way of using expressive means of the piano and orchestra. The violin concerto is among Khachaturian’s best compositions and a classic of contemporary violin music, frequently played by violinists all over the world. It was composed in the summer of 1940 and first performed by David Oistrakh, to whom the piece was dedicated on November 16, 1940.

Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra Gennady Rohdestvensky: conductor PROKOFIEV: Symphonies 1–7 A classic of Soviet symphonic music! Prokofiev’s works reflect the whole palette of a tempestuous 20th-century history, from the greatest and most glorious accomplishments to the most bitter and tragic events. It was the composer’s emotional response to the pressing problems of the era, and his name became a symbol of one of the main phases of musical culture development. The composer’s symphonic heritage (seven symphonies composed from 1917 to 1952) is one of the brightest pages in the history of classical music, and the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Gennady Rozhdestvensky, brilliantly captured the works for this legendary project.

The material first appears unchanged in the quartet, and is later interspersed throughout the new material. Then, Rihm goes a step further, transferring the whole string quartet into a third piece: “Interscriptum” (2000/2002), a quintet that Rihm ironically describes as a duo for string quartet and piano.

The work was commissioned by renowned pianist Stephen Drury, whose repertoire extends from Bach, Schubert, and Liszt to Ives, Cage, and Carter. The disc also features Adams’ work “…and bells remembered,” a lovely, quiet, pensive percussion quintet scored for bell-like instruments: chimes, vibraphone, orchestral bells, and crotales. Recently featured in the New York Times: “His music evokes, and in some cases adapts, the complex interplays of light, sound, space, and motion found in nature, to mesmerizing effect.” (2/21/11).

Its central compositional idea is that of combining its two antagonists—soloists and ensemble—to create a single homogeneous body of sound. Unsuk Chin uses the idea of metamorphosis to realize a coherent musical texture that is nonetheless constantly growing, and the sonorities and complex rhythmic layering of the piece are to some extent influenced by Balinese gamelan music.

Jean Absil doesn’t just have the honor of occupying the first pages of all musical dictionaries; he is also one of the most important Belgian composers of the 20th century. In the course of a long and prestigious career, which gave him access to the main European editors, he wrote works that brought him friendship and respect from composers as diverse as Florent Schmitt, Darius Milhaud, and Béla Bartók. Sometimes harsh, often appealing, and almost always polytonal and contrapuntal, his refined language earned him international recognition which was halted by World War II but truly took off afterwards. Here, Daniel Blumenthal gives us his personal exploration of a fascinating and colorful piano repertoire.

This fascinating, striking interpretation is reinforced by a remarkable array of soloists: Simone Kermes, Stéphanie Houtzeel, Markus Brutscher, and Arnaud Richard. Thanks to optimal recording conditions (seven days of studio recording) led by Hugues Deschaux (responsible for recording Le Poème Harmonique and Café Zimmermann), the interpretation is enriched by the particular care with which the sound was recorded. Mirroring the Requiem, the world premiere of the contemporary Hosanna, written by young Russian composer Sergei Zagny, reflects the Requiem in its aesthetics, describing the story of the composing of the Requiem.

Hans-Jörg Mammel

Psalms of David in 17th Century Northern Germany Hans-Jörg Mammel: tenor/La Fenice/Jean Tubéry: conductor/Gebhard David: cornet Works by Bruhns, Buxtehude, Weiland, Sommer, Förtsch, Bernhard & Sweelinck After the Thirty Years War, a brilliant musical culture was able to flourish in the churches of Northern Germany. Organists such as Buxtehude, Scheidemann, Bruhns, and Sommer started to compose their own works. This new musical culture in the North of Germany fundamentally differed from what was going on in the Center or the South of the country. In these regions there remained a scholarly and speculative conception of music, inspired by the humanist spirit of the Reformation. On the shores of the Baltic and North seas it was the prosperous Hanseatic League that considerably influenced musical life. Aristocrats and burghers insisted that the members of local chapels should be allowed to practice their art, like the organists and musicians attached to the service of the different towns, and thus a generation of musicians was born. Assembled on this disc, their music probably never achieved the recognition it deserved.

This fascinating program celebrates the rich compositional fruits of the Siglo de Oro’s intensely competitive musical culture. The luminary works—all dedicated to the Virgin Mary—demand performances of great intelligence and vocal commitment. The youthful Marians respond absolutely, bringing hushed intimacy and bristling excitement to some of the most gorgeously searing lines in the history of European polyphony.

Kostas Paskalis, Luciano Pavarotti, Renata Scotto, Paolo Washington: vocal soloists Orchestra & Chorus of the Teatro Comunale of Florence Carlo Maria Giulini: conductor VERDI: Rigoletto (complete opera) “Here, taped live in 1966, we find the tenor [Pavarotti] at his most engaging as the dangerous, carefree Duke, absolutely certain of himself, singing with great passion and energy. At the same time Scotto paints a lovely, fragile picture of Gilda—eager and innocent.” — ClassicsToday Although not well known in America, Kostas Paskalis (1929–2007) was one of the leading baritones in Europe during the 1960s and ’70s. As Paskalis made few recordings, this album is a rare and treasured chance to hear one of the great Rigolettos of recent times. At this writing, it is his only available recording of the role that also features the legendary Luciano Pavarotti and magnificent diva Renata Scotto. Opera d’Oro presents Grand Tier, a deluxe edition of the most beloved Opera d’Oro performances with original artwork by Rafal Olbinski and Opera d’Oro’s best remastered sound!
