Waybright: cnd/Vonnegut: libretto An American Soldier’s Tale Cat # SMT 532 WASHINGTON POST: “If the narrative specifics of Stravinsky’s acerbically folksy score don’t always jibe with the slangy, modern feel of Vonnegut’s words, there is, nevertheless, a hint of unexpected Brecht/Weill pungency to the mix. A quartet of lively young actors (Joseph Alessi Jr., David Baker, Max Strum and Madeline Huffman) sell the verse well, and the American Chamber Winds, under conductor David A. Waybright, contribute a sharply etched, arrestingly characterized reading of the score, with Summit’s close-up miking giving the players a tangible immediacy.”

A “must have” reference for anyone interested in Mahler! Includes a CD of the rarest Mahler’s recording ever—the 4th symphony recorded in Holland in 1949, with the Hilversum Radio Orchestra conducted by Paul van Kempen. Only one set is known to survive, and the audio has been reconstituted and restored in Toronto by producer Jacob Harnoy. With this book, Péter Fülöp wishes to pay tribute to Mahler’s music on the 150th anniversary of its composer’s birth and the 100th anniversary of his death. The book is the result of many years of record collecting by Fülöp, who started to collect Mahler records in 1974 in Budapest. The book lists 2,774 recordings, virtually all of which are housed in his archive. Having the recordings in hand has been critical to allow listing of some information, such as timings, and has been also helpful in ascertaining other information, such as works, artist, record labels, and more. In the timing section, durations of all works and movements may be found. Photographs of the first Mahler recordings are also drawn from the recordings in this archive. In the works section, not only are the artists and records presented, but the venue and the recording dates as well. In many cases, diligent and persistent research has been required to unearth these details.

Sunhae Im: soprano Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Manfred Honeck: conductor MAHLER: Symphony No. 4 in G “By now the casual observer of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra under music director Manfred Honeck might be thinking, ‘Mahler again? Haven’t they played him enough?’ But to the die-hard patron—and to most in the audience last night at Heinz Hall—the resounding answer is, ‘NEVER!’ … When you are in its grasp, this symphony can become a transcendent experience. Especially when you are guided by an expert who feels deeply for this composer, as is the case with Mr. Honeck.” — Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Following the sensational hit of Mahler’s First Symphony, this is the second in the series of Mahler symphonies recorded by Manfred Honeck and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Honeck finds this symphony especially dear to his heart, evoking the world of Mahler with “the interplay of the eerie and the idyllic.”

Anima Eterna Jos van Immerseel: conductor BEETHOVEN: Symphony No. 5 in C minor Editor’s Choice in August 2010 issue of Classic FM DVD of the Month in May 2010 issue of Opus Klassiek Recorded in High Definition with neck-flexing camerawork, this performance at Brussels’ historic Concert Noble makes for an electrifying live event. The concert is accompanied by a documentary, which expands on the music, the musicians, and the trials & tribulations onstage and off. Although Beethoven’s C Minor Symphony is probably the best-known piece of classical music ever written, it is veiled in myths and misunderstandings that are beginning to clear up thanks to the research and performance efforts of musicians such as Jos van Immerseel and Anima Eterna. This DVD bears visual testimony to the fact that one does not need a symphony orchestra to capture the cosmic dimensions of Beethoven. Anima Eterna makes a convincing plea for a small-scale chamber orchestra with specialized musicians playing on period instruments and performing as soloists. He is particularly renowned and respected for his interpretations of Richard Strauss, Wagner, and Mahler. Despite the severe restrictions of the old East German regime, Haenchen was given special permission to work with the West’s finest ensembles, including the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Continual interference by the authorities, however, led to severe setbacks in his career and he subsequently made his home in the Netherlands, where a new public recognized his genius, and where he eventually became Music Director of both the Netherlands Philharmonic and the Netherlands Opera. In October 2008 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit of the German Republic in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the arts.

Vilain XIIII’s six-octave straight-strung Streicher has an intimate sound, precise articulation, and a transparent bass register and is, therefore, perfectly suited to the music of the Viennese early Romantics Beethoven and Schubert. The recording of the complete solo piano works of Franz Schubert on this first-class period instrument is a project that originated from the cycle of concerts devoted to Schubert’s works that Jan Vermeulen has given for the Cultural Centre Maasmechelen since 2003, and from the increasing realization of the particular historical qualities of the instrument.

Ricercar
Release Date: November 9, 2010 A magnificent object! Like Ricercar’s Guide to Period Instruments, this beautiful set features eight CDs and a gorgeous 200-page color book. This is neither the time nor the place to retrace all the steps that led the reformers to their various fates; neither need we outline the reactions of those who forged the basic ideas of the Counter-Reformation by defending the principles of the Roman Catholic Church. Such a description of the historical background simply aids us to a better understanding of the role that music played in these situations, how it was able to adapt itself to the precepts that the two faiths proclaimed and how it continued its development during a highly complex period in history. It was during this time that polyphony had reached its apogee, and was beginning to give way to the accompanied single lines and the rich expression that would characterize the baroque.

W.A. MOZART
“Otmar Suitner was one of the last survivors of the old Kapellmeister tradition, learning his crafts as he made his way up the professional ladder in slow and steady stages, rather than the catapult-to-stardom system that deposits young conductors before the public these days. Eventually, Suitner’s name was to become a frequent one on recordings, but the fact that he spent most of his working life in the former East Germany meant he was not as familiar a figure on the international scene as his abilities deserved.” — The Independent
