Dumlao assumes exec seat by Joy Wangdale

Geared up with simplicity, dedication to public service, determination, confidence, and prayer which led her to the NVSU’s executive seat, Dr. Florentina S. Dumlao is the new university president. The sudden death of Marilou Abon, former university president caused vacancy of the said position in which Dumlao substituted until April 13, 2013, the expected end of Abon’s term. Dumlao’s application for the university’s presidential

seat passed a due process such as screening from the Search Committee, Public Forum, and election headed by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), before she formally assumed the said position last April 13. As to her educational attainment, she graduated at Cagayan State University with the degree, Master in Public Administration at Saint Louis College, San Fernando La Union. After which, she took up her Doctor of Philosophy at Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State

University. Her primary concerns in her term are the students as her clients so she plans a strategy to increase the passing rate of NVSU licensure examinees; classroom modernization; to work for a conducive environment for students; to integrate research development and extension, and business affairs to the curriculum; and to implement international certification, that is, the NVSU graduates can be employed globally. Education Students’ life Joy Wangdale

My brain’s so drained. Stressed! This sem has been torturing my already tortured mind. I’ve been writing articles the whole week for the campus journ. Puyat, efforts exerted, recasted works, gastos, and the pimples that grew on my face, equals comatose. I and my classmates deserve 1.0 for that, Sir. Demanding.

Notice: no classes today “NVSU as a premier university that nourishes a culture of EXCELLENCE?” How come? Indeed, excellence both in academic performance and in extra-curricular activities is the aim of any schools worldwide. This is proven by the top-performing universities in the country such as UST, La Salle, UP, to name a few. So how about our university? NVSU will not be left behind because it also excels in activities, and in lots of extra-curricular activities. This semester is about to end but almost half of it was spent in activities such as university programs, meetings, seminar, and others. In fairness, the other half was spent inside the classroom for the missed lessons. As for that, we may as well change NVSU to NVSA which is: Nueva Vizcaya School of Activities. These activities caused disturbance or suspension of classes. Because attendance is strictly checked, the students are required to attend. Some may really enjoy and actively participate in those activities but did majority of the students learn a lot? Other than that, the teachers attended seminars and other activities so they were unable to meet their students. Again, classes were affected. So, how can we find the so-called EXCELLENCE into this kind of scenario? Extra-curricular activities are good and helpful if these are well-managed and well-organized. But the problem is the suspension of classes because of these. If this will continue to happen, what will the students learn? Will they truly learn and be experts in their field of specializations by having too many activities to the point of suspending their classes? Definitely not! We cannot just be excellent in one area and disregard the other. In fact, when we compare and measure the significance of extra-curricular activities with that of the academics, the latter is more important and should be given more emphasis and consideration especially when the administration cannot fairly balance the two. Admin, admin, admin… Can you hear our little plea? T

I’m thinking of the things that should be worth thinking so that this article will be worth reading but I guess my brain has stopped functioning well. My teachers are brain-wrecking for giving us blooddraining requirements. haha. Just kidding.. Hey, readers! What topic arouses your curiosity-seeking brains? I don’t have much of that so never mind. Hehe. I think I’m getting insane. Whether you accept it or not, insanity’s part of students’ life. Who will not go insane when there are so many requirements, projects, research works, and demo-teaching plus the ‘masusungit’, strict, biased, and all sorts of teachers that we meet every day? We are in the crazy place composed of crazy things and mad creatures. Haha. Don’t be offended, ok? Anyway, as I’ve said, insanity’s part of life. What is the best description of the CTED students? CAS, CBE, CHE, Forestry, Agriculture, and Engineering yelled: MAIINGAY! Why are you so maingay ba kasi, Educ? Haha. I have another one: Mdm. Univ. President: taga Teacher Education ka ba? CTED students: bakit??? Mdm. Univ. president: ang ingay mo kasi eh. Boom! Haha. I laughed out loud when I heard this pick up line during the acquaintance night some months ago. (kababain educ) hahaha. I think the students were just too excited to go wild that night.. hehe. But we still need to observe Discipline, yes? I heard something. Did you? The BSED students are VIPs for the next enrolment because they don’t need to make pila-pila na for their clearance and the like because the CFSE officers will take care of it na. Ganyan nila tayo ka-mahal. Haha. Tenk u for that, espesyali to CFSE president, Courtney Cabauatan. Bcoz of dat, I’ll give you an

ekselent clap. Speaking of pila-pila, the who is that person from the registrar’s office to makes sungit-sungit to the students when they go there for the none-of-our-business purposes? I haven’t really encountered that so I dunno it that is true or just a chismis. But my PISS of advice is: we (I include myself, of course) are your clients, your customers. All we want is fair treatment and a friendly atmosphere in your office. Gets? Haha Did I read it right? I received a text message this morning saying that NVSU has changed its name to NVSA. Nueva Vizcaya School of Activities daw. Who spread that gm? Was it you, Rostom? Hala ka. Hahaha. I’ll gonna love the new name though. It means fun, fun, and fun! Go, NVSA! Haha. My intense quest for knowledge was affected because of that. (pahiram ng line mo, mam jane) As I walk in the college’s corridor, I always see different kinds of faces: angelic and demonic faces alike. Speaking of faces, who is the cutest guy in the faculty? CTED girl studes say: sir will.i.am! I bet.. haha. Of course my friends and I as in I are guilty of that fact, too. Yeah, we are the College of Education students. We make a lot of noise (which they misinterpret as being proud), we talk back when we know we are right, we apologize when we are wrong because we accept our mistakes and from that, we learn something, we love our teachers because they show as reasons to, and we dislike some for the very same reason. We are not superior, we are just active for we take the initiative when others don’t and can’t. We give back what we receive. We simply feel these things because we are but human beings. This is our life: we sleep very late at night to finish our

Opinion

Life changes…Let’s accept, embrace it Mary Anne Bullawit Have you ever asked yourself why life continues to change? Or have you ever tried to forgive someone who betrayed you? What about accepting his apology? How about failure? Though some of us have already experienced this since we were born in this world, we are already aware on these happenings. Whether we like it or not, everything happens for a reason and only God who knows that reason. Some are afraid to experience failure because this may give them a traumatic experience and one of the reasons why they don’t want to pursue anymore. All we want is success- success because it can give us lot of advantages and encouragement to pursue more. These things may happen naturally, even if we expected it or not. Either we want it or not. Even we try hard but we fail to do it, nor if we didn’t try hard but we succeeded. Life is a matter of change, even people changes; their attitudes, thoughts, feelings and how they will socialize with you. If you do well to them, then they will treat you as their friend but if you do bad things to them, they will treat you

as their enemy. It’s unfair diba? Still, we don’t hold our destiny. We can’t avoid change. If we try to avoid it, how could we do this? What are the things that we should do? Is it because we have too much pride that we don’t want to lose? Or we are just afraid to what might happen if we let those things to happen? A big insult -is it true? We have noticed and heard of events that cause every individual not to try hard anymore because of biases, personal issues, pride, and sometimes fail to think objectively. We entertain our thoughts only; we don’t want to hear the thought of others, we do not open our minds and hearts-all we want is our own reasoning. We don’t want to forgive, accept and love the changes that are happening in our lives. With that such small misunderstanding, we learn to become an evil person. Why are we like this? What is lacking within us? Can’t we accept the fact that sometimes others are really better than us? We deny that we committed mistakes? Why? Life is a twist, so we must have the said “ACCEPTANCE”. If none, then we will never escape

those things. All we need is “FORGIVENESS” and “CHANGE”. Life would be difficult if we don/t have this in our minds and hearts. When we learn to accept, forgive people, and love the change that had caused us pain, we then learn to move on. We must have to be prepared with the unexpected things that might happen in our life. What can make us even better person is not tolerating the bad experience we had, but accepting it is a good deal. That may serve as a challenge to us. We must be openminded of all the things that might happen to us, from that-we become courageous enough to accept the fact that sometimes we succeeded and sometimes we failed. Not all things we want to happen really happen in our own way. Life is very amazing that we can enjoy all the happenings that we are all experiencing even in good times or in bad times. We are far better from our evil sides-we can change. We must.

Education... requirements; we make a lot of noise to show our enthusiasm as future educators; we are irritated by our teachers because we know that in the future, our own students will be also irritated with us; we complain because we want to be given fair treatment; we criticize because we want improvements; we hate because we are given reasons to hate; we praise our teachers because they are worthy of it; we learn to love teaching profession simply because of what we see from our teachers. See? Teachers play a great role on the students’ lives. Amen for that! So the bottom line there is: be a PROFESSIONAL teacher in your words, actions, values and in your life as a whole. That is quite hard. Haha. CTED (teachers, classmates, friends, my cted crush) has been teaching me a lot of things.. So be that as it may (line ni sir Ronnie cute daw. Haha. Peace!) Because of that, I’m running out of English words. Okay, bye! Happy vacation! ETC. end of my thinking capacity. T

How to teach without teachers? Joy Wangdale

EDITORIAL BOARD SY 2012-2013

Editor in Chief: Joy D. Wangdale Associate Editor Mary Anne Bullawit Managing Editor Aiza Wakit Features Editor May Mangili Sports Editor: April Joy Futol Moderator: Mr. Ronnie F. Castaneda Consultants: Dr. Nieto P. Bacena, Department Chair, BSED Dr. Revelita G. Cuntapay, College Dean

Among the seven colleges in NVSU, the College of Teacher Education has the most number of students yet it has also one of the least numbers of teachers. So, how can the future teachers teach without teachers? Despite the lack of faculty members, the CTED teachers worked hard and with diligence in order to provide quality education to the education students. Yet, in spite of those efforts, it is still not enough so they borrow teachers from other colleges, particularly from the College of Arts and Sciences. Ironically, these two colleges have a conflict with a reason I don’t fully understand. Although CAS teachers teach the education students specifically in latter’s major subjects, they cannot avoid giving comments and judgments regarding CTED’s lack of teachers. Even if their comments are unintentional or just a plain honesty, it still affects students’ emotion toward their teachers, studies and others. One great solution for the lack of teachers, if the CTED cannot hire some, is to ask help from other colleges. They can be ask and be given easily if they have good working relationship with each other; not merely looking at the other as a competitor. It is because in the end, their common goal is to give quality instruction to every student; not to prove who among them is better. Anyway, teaching is sharing what you know, giving what you have, and committing yourself to the welfare of others. T

Everyday that comes is a chance. Chance to do something we must or desire. Many people in the world dream that someday shall have a chance to show-up what they got. Likewise or shall I say most especially with the inventors. Every now and then they are eager to discover something new, incredible and unique, that’s why we encounter a rapid change and improvement of the gadgets or technologies we use. But how does a man in the person of Dr. Romulfo C. Sanchez able to show what he’s got and became wonder in his own. Well, as he said: “My invention is a product of long hours of thinking, designing, revising and constructing because years have passed before I finally made it. He added, “This invention has been the fruit of hardwork, many trials and errors.” Out of those very long hours of work something of wonder was created, a Wonder Chair. With this design the inventor was able to hit three birds in one shot; a chair that can be turned into an iron stand and may also be turned to utility ladder which has patent numbers; 3-2010-00643, 3-2010-00644, and 3-2010-00645, respectively. Because of being wonder inventor, he was able to win in the Regional Invention Contest and Exhibits (RICE) with a certificate of recognition, trophy, and an amount of Php 25,000.00, held at Mall of the Valley, Tuguegarao City, Cagayan on Sept. 12-16, 2011. And also he was able to bag the award of being an outstanding inventor of the year in the National Invention Contest and Exhibits (NICE) in which he earned a certificate and an amount of 100,000.00, held at SMX Convention Center, Seashell Lane Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City last July 10-14, 2012. Fea tu res 24th day of Sept. Dr. Romulfo C. Sanchez, because of the wisdom that God given him that made him won in the RICE as well as in the NICE contest, is now a member of the World Intellectual Property Organization(WIPO) as outstanding inventor in the industrial design category and also a member of the Filipino Inventors Society Incorporated (FIS). Beside the fact of being outstanding not only in the Regional but also in the National level, Dr. Romulfo C. Sanchez proved that he is not only a wonder in terms of his invention but also in his word of honor, saying that his loyalty will always remain to NVSU, where he is right now spending his long years of service, that his invention will not serve only for his own and family benefit but also will be used to generate income for the University, will serve as an additional knowledge and skill to the learners in furniture and cabinet making by training and letting them reproduce his design, and also it will serve as an identity, honor and prestige not only of the inventor himself but of course of the University especially in the wood crop project. There are reasons or things that inspired him to invent such wonder chair like making money or generating income but these are only his minors. What inspired him the most in making his design is his loyalty to his work; that he wants to show how much he dedicated himself in his field of expertise to achieve what we all aim, EXCELLENCE. It is really amazing and an honor to be called as wonder, wonder in your own field of expertise. It is also a great pleasure to help others by sharing and imparting what you have. But in order to attain all of these, there’s a need to work hard coupled with patience that no matter how long and how far it takes, you are always still there facing the reality and possibility of your work. That you dedicate your heart in it according to God’s wills to come up with what is best. T

Loved but

“For how many times do I have to tell you, don’t make me mad! Come here I will give you a lesson that you will never forget..” With his powerful and supposed to be protective hands, he beat me, leaving bruises on my arms and fears and hatred in my eyes. “Please stop, Father… I’m sorry, I won’t do it again. Please stop…” I cried pleading and asking for forgiveness for a thing that I did not even do. I was so young then but I have learned that life was not about love for life has been giving me hatred and fears. Children at my age were playing happily and endlessly with their friends and were loved and cared by their family. For me, living with my family was like living in hell. Ur pastor told me what hell may look like so I was already aware of it. I always witnessed the cruelty of my father who beat my mother and us. I could do nothing but to cry and silently wish him to die. What I witnessed at home greatly affected my behaviors especially at school. I might have excelled with my academics but not on my relationship with other people and fellow pupils. i was then a loner and aloof with them. Because of that, I had only few friends. I learned to be independent and not to depend on other s. my childhood years was spent with regrets , fears, and hopeless hopes. I remembered a time when he felt like beating me up so he did. I pretended to be hurt and cry for him to stop. He was drunk that time. With those beatings, I did not feel any pain because I was already immuned with it. I hardly remembered when was the last time I felt how painful the pain was. I was his favorite person (to beat) because I was always at home since my older siblings were at school. I hated him then. I did not know where to run for help since my mother was also beaten. That experience taught me to be secretive and not open up with my family. One day, I heard from my mother that they will adopt a baby boy so I was glad. The first few months and years of his life in the house was good but I began to notice the special attention and care of my father to him which he never did to us, so I became envious. Selfish as normal children were, I became indifferent with my adopted brother. I became an evil step-sister to him and made him cry whenever possible. When my father would learn this, he would usually beat me. Yet, I did not know why I felt happy hearing my brother cry. It was maybe because through this, I could satisfy my bitterness and hatred. As years went by, I noticed something has changed with my father but I just ignored it. He had stopped beating and saying things to us. He started to talk “fatherly” with me and with my siblings but I have already set my young mind not to listen and believe in him. A huge gap between us was already created. I knew, he was trying to reach us out but I was too hurt and too blinded to listen. Time is so fast when it goes, it will never come back. He died with-

out any chance of bidding us goodbye. Now, if I could just bring back the time, I would have been matured enough to understand and love him. If only I was too young and too selfish that time, I would have given him the chance to ask for forgiveness and to reconcile with me. If only I was not blinded by my emotions, we would have been a happy family. If only I could turn back the time, I would have hugged him and told him I loved him. Those “if only” were the regrets I have which would have been avoided if that time was this time on which I have grown up and understood the reasons why people behave in different ways and the psychological reasons why they act the way they act. If only… From this, I learned so many things-really. I might have experienced that trial but one thing, one most important thing that happened to me, was when I felt hopeless and alone yet God has been there for me. I did not see Him but I could feel His presence and love toward me. I learned not to depend on others but He taught me to depend on Himalone. Those childhood memories led me not to a worthless and mean-

“...he felt like beating me up, so he did.I pretended to be hurt and cry for him to stop.” ingless life but to a contented, hopeful, and meaningful life because I know that H e was with me throughout my life’s journey. I found peace and meaning in my life the day I surrendered my life and accepted Him as my Lord and savior. I might have not even thought of doing that thing if I have not experienced life’s struggles and trials during my childhood days. Life is great. It is full of joys, hopes, trials, challenges and beauty. Life experiences mold us and teach us lessons that will help us truly feel the essence of living. I love life because God has given me reasons to. He is the best definition of the so-called LOVE. May I quote my favorite verse in Romans 8:38-39 which says “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”-NIV. Mangkukulam Really Exists by Yoj_cute15

“She was tied on a tree upside-down with her eyes blindfolded, her mouth and nose full of soil, her ears with sharpened sticks, and her body tattooed with cigarette ashes. They put ants all over her body, each creature biting and torturing her to death. After that, they put fire o the tree using nice stalks. Seeing that she was really dead, they dug a pit and buried her. With satisfied looks and devilish smiles, they left that old woman helpless and lifeless.” I was shocked when I heard this story coming from my mother when I asked her about some things that happened in our place during her younger years. “Why on earth did they do such a thing?” I asked. “They are so evil!” I exclaimed with disbelief. “They suspected her to be a “mangkukulam” because some of our neighbors got sick when she came here in our place. Our drunkard neighbors did that,” my mother ex-

claimed. “Did they prove that she was a mangkukulam?” I asked with curiosity. “I, myself, proved that she was innocent. She was even kind. When I was busy in the field, she took good care of your Ate Matet when she was still a baby,” she further said. “Our barrio, especially during 1980’s was a remote place. They live simply and are contented with the vegetables and fruits they gathered. Because of its location, it was

seldom for them to go to the market and the like. Civilization has not reached it yet so the people are illiterate. Unusual things that occur meant punishment or bewitched to them. No wonder, they were very superstitious.” Ilocano people are very superstitious (we were the only Ifugao’s who lived there) and believed too much in bewitchment and whatsoever,” my mother sighed. “So what happened after she was killed?”

“Some policemen came and interrogated the murderers but because one of the murderers was influential, and Aling Nena has no family, the interrogation was pointless.” From that, I realized that mangkukulam really exists for it is found in the evil and heartless heart of people who harm others who are weaker than them. It is the evil desire of people to destroy, kill, and dominate their fellow human beings. “May she rest in peace.” T

TEACHER’S ADVOCATE

Fea tu res

Teaching is truly a noble profession. It is also a very time consuming one, requiring a commitment on your part. Teaching can be very demanding but can also be extremely rewarding. Here are five things you should consider before taking up teaching as your chosen career.

1. Time Commitment In order to be an effective teacher, you need to realize that the time you are at work - those 7 1/2 to 8 hours - really must be spent with the kids. This means that creating lesson plans and grading assignments will probably take place on "your own time." Further, to truly relate to your students you will probably be involved in their activities - attending sporting activities and school plays, sponsoring a club or a class, or going on trips with your students for various reasons.

2. Pay People often make a big deal about teacher pay. It is true that teachers do not make as much money as many other professionals, especially over time. However, each state and district can vary widely on teacher pay. Further, when you look at how much you are being paid, make sure to think of it in terms of the number of months worked. For example, if you are starting out with a $25,000 salary but you are off for 8 weeks in the summer, then you should take this into account. Many teachers will teach summer school or get summer jobs to help increase their yearly salary.

3. Respect or Lack Thereof Teaching is an odd profession, both revered and pitied at the same time. You will probably find that when you tell others you are a teacher they will in fact offer you their condolences. They might even say they couldn't do your job. However, don't be surprised if they then go on to tell you a horror story about their own teachers or their child's education. It is an odd situation and you should face it with your eyes wide open.

4. Community Expectations Everyone has an opinion of what a teacher should be doing. As a teacher you will have a lot of people pulling you in different directions. The modern teacher wears many hats. They act as educator, coach, activity sponsor, nurse, career advisor, parent, friend, and innovator. Realize that in any one class, you will have students of varying levels and abilities and you will be judged on how well you can reach each student by individualizing their education. This is the challenge of education but at the same time can make it a truly rewarding experience.

Things to Consider Before Becoming a Teacher 5. Emotional Commitment Teaching is not a desk job. It requires you to "put yourself out there" and be on each day. Great teachers emotionally commit to their subject matter and their students. Realize that students seem to feel a sense of "ownership" over their teachers. They assume that you are their for them. They assume that your life revolves around them. It is not uncommon for a student to be surprised to see you behaving normally in everyday society. Further, depending on the size of the town where you will be teaching, you need to understand that you will be running into your students pretty much everywhere you go. Thus, expect somewhat of a lack of anonymity in the community. T Source: http://712educators.about.com/od/teachereducation/tp/becomingateacher.htm

Fea tu res A leader

out of a teacher “Great leaders don’t just make followers; they make more leaders-not just ideal but real leaders” -Joe Hendrick Morales Holding the hall of fame, an education student once again proved that Education students are not only for classrooms but they go beyond that; being teachers mean being servants of all. Joe Hendrick Morales, a fourth year BSED IV (English) who won in last year’s USSC election, continuously serves his fellow students in the whole university with his projects and plans in his one-year term. Being an academician, a student-leader, a good and cheerfullooking person, he has gained the respect and trust of the students who voted him in the USSC’s presidential seat. In an interview conducted by the TA staff, Joe Hendrick answered the questions and other queries regarding his plans and projects for the students. TA: What are the reasons why you ran as USSC President? JOE HENDRICK: Foremostly, of course to fight for the rights of my fellow students, to lead and help the administrations in developing the university in the different fields or areas like projects, infrastructure, student leadership and academics. TA: What are your achievements being the USSC President? JOE HENDRICK: As of now, I am the vice chairperson of Student Council Alliance of the Philippines-Cagayan Valley. Some of my other achievements are: Mr. NVSU 1st runner-up

2010, former vice president of USSC, and former senator. I am also officer of various organizations to wit; FETTA, CFSE, SSHC, and KHM. I was also a consistent Dean’s Lister. TA: What are your plans and projects for the NVSU? JOE HENDRICK: The USSC in collaboration with the OSA, already proposed different infrastructure projects for the university to wit; classroom modernization, mini-hall for the students’ organizations and catwalk in some parts of the university. TA: From the start of your turn, can you state or give to us some of your accomplishments in the university? JOE HENDRICK: From the start of my term, I helped and supported the student’s infrastructure projects, classroom modernization projects, and I have also conducted activities, programs and seminars. I attended different national trainings and conventions for me to share the students of this university. I also conducted seminars and forums for the students. TA: What do you think is the reason why you won in the said election, and are you confident that you won? JOE HENDRICK: Nope, I am not confident because my opponents are also good, and because of thetrust of the students are already in me, I’ve been in the council for three consecutive years, and they have known and

trusted me already that’s why they voted me. TA: What is the description or an adjective that best describes you? JOE HENDRICK: Ahm… Cheerful, haha…because I am a jolly person that leads me towards being an approachable and friendly person. TA: How do you manage your time despite the fact that you have so many responsibilities being the USSC President, and at the same time, concentrating on your studies as well? JOE HENDRICK: Leadership entails greater responsibility and commitment. It’s indeed a very difficult balancing equation on my part as a student and as a student-leader-balancing my academics and leadership particularly the USSC, but the only key to surpass these challenges-it’s just a matter of time management. I always inculcate in my mind that the very reason why I go to school is to study and leadership is my sub-responsibility, and above all the guidance of our Almighty Father. With cheerfulness and humility, after the interview, he asked us of other clarifications that we want to further asked about the USSC’s policies and plans. In his one year term, he was expected to serve every student of this university with transparency and 100% commitment. T

In times of trouble, I look terrible. My heart trembles, Without You, Savior. When I fall down, You lift me up. You hide me in And restore my everything. When I sin, I know I am forgiven Without you Lord, Mu life would be in vain. When I go far, You draw me near. You hold me tight, And never leave by my side.

Let’s get high with Haikus yoj_15 Haiku is a poem with three lines composed of 5-5-7 syllables that originated in Japan and was popularized by Basho, distinguished Japanese poet and writer. Let’s have an emo-poem in the form of a Haiku: A girl waiting for her man Love…longing, hoping Will these feelings not be changed? Feeling that can’t be expressed Through songs, poems it’s said Love’s hidden…feeling’s fadin’ To be more than friend she hopes Emotion betrays Loving him is a suicide When will this crazy love fade? May Mangili I stand in front of a multitude, Talk with sweet words and encouragement. But inside me is honor and glory, And then You say; “It’s not me in You” I go to church on Sunday, And give smile to everyone I see. But my heart says, for today only. Again You say, “It’s not me in You.” In the morning I pray, “Thy will be done in me.” I go to school and seem ready, But when I don’t know the activity; “friend may I see.” Again You say, “It’s not me in You.” Everytime I say; “I love You so true.” But when someone hate me, I hate him too. You cried in pain for you know I’m lying, And You told me; “Oh! No. It’s not really me in You.”

I think it helps me a lot, Coz I’ve never told you to be back. And I will never regret with that. Coz my life would never become black.

Your words are my guide and my light, Your promises are strong foundation of my life. Your name is my shield and refuge, Oh! How awesome God you are!

Even if you hurt me, Still, I thank you for being a part me. And I know that you wouldn’t be my enemy, Because you still made me happy.

In you I know how it feels to be free, In you I know how it feels to be love unconditionally. In you I have hope for my future, Oh! God how awesome you are!

Li terary In her sweet tongue, My heart fully believes. In her friendly words, I started to like her. When she’s in front of me, She’s very kind. But in her back, A big monster resides.

I just don’t understand, How she gets started. She speaks at my back, And I don’t know about that. To the one who created the world, Do clean up her mind. For her not to live in her dreams, But to live in reality. The arms of the darkness maybe strong, But I know you’re powerful than that. In your mighty words, I know she will be changed.

The First of the Devil Peace…Freedom… I shouted in my mind My heart torn into pieces, my soul wined because of you Where are your promises? Those promises had been broken, My dream to glimpse the tip of glory now turned to sorrow. My God of glory! My God of grace! My heart filled with hatred, revenge comes to my mind, Revenge is what I want. Forgive me dear Lord; I am very tired and weary. As I look back to my past, my dream wrecked very fast. In your monstrous way, my future had been lost.

What will I do with money and gold if my soul had been destroyed? Where’s your warm liking that you showed before? My Savior Jesus, listen to my prayers. I am looking for light and peace. Walking in the wrong way and listening to a wrong dictator. In the feet of the devil, my life had been destroyed.

Quotes for the Thoughts

Sports is not just about playing, winning, and beating others. How do I say so? Read the following lines of the well-jnown sports celebrities to find it out.

“Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships.” -Michael Jordan

“Someone who doesn't make the (Olympic) team might weep and collapse. In my day no one fell on the track and cried like a baby. We lost gracefully. And when someone won, he didn't act like he'd just become king of the world, either. Athletes in my day were simply humble in our victory. I believe we were more mature then...Maybe it's because the media puts so much pressure on athletes; maybe it's also the money. In my day we competed for the love of the sport...In my day we patted the guy who beat us on the back, wished him well, and that was it.”

― Louis Zamperini, Devil at My Heels: A Heroic Olympian’s Astonishing Story of Survival as a Japanese POW in World War II

“Tennis taught me to take chances, to take life as it comes. To hit every ball that comes to me no matter how hard it looks, to give it my best shot.” ― Thisuri Wanniarachchi

“Games give you a chance to excel, and if you're playing in good company you don't even mind if you lose because you had the enjoyment of the company during the course of the game.”

― Gary Gygax

“After I hit a home run I had a habit of running the bases with my head down. I figured the pitcher already felt bad enough without me showing him up rounding the bases.”

― Mickey Mantle

“People focus on role models; it is more effective to find antimodels people you don't want to resemble when you grow up” ― Nassim Nicholas Taleb

How Chess came into Existence

The game of chess has long been considered one of the most intellectual board games in the world. It is a timeless game with endless possibilities of openings, game-play, and endings. In fact, there are 20 ways to make the very first moves, 318 billion ways to play the first four moves, and approximately 1.70x10^29 moves in first 10 moves. The average number of moves in a game is around 50, so imagine the possibilities. I'd say it borders infinity! So where did such an amazing, intellectual game come from and how long was it around? Here is a brief history of chess. It is commonly thought that the game of chess evolved from a game that originated from India called Chaturanga. The game is very similar to chess but still has some minor differences. For instance, the starting position at the beginning of the game was exactly the same except for the fact that the black and white king and queen are not facing each other. Also the pieces movements aren't exactly the same either. The queen, or mantri as it was called in the game of Chaturanga, could only move one square diagonally. The bishop, or gaja (elephant), could move only 2 blocks diagonally. The castling move to protect the king was also not invented yet either.

The game of Chaturanga than traveled to Persia, where it was developed further. The beginning formation was now changed with both king and queen facing each other. Also, the pawn could now be promoted to a queen when it advanced to the eighth rank, although it was not a very important factor in the game because the queen was still only allowed to move 1 block. When Persia was invaded and conquered by Muslims, the game spread throughout the Middle East, into Russia, and eventually into Europe. Europe is credited for changing the bishop's and queen's to its present-day moves. This gave these two pieces more "oomph" to pack and made pawn promo-

tion a potentially game-changing tactic. Currently, though, it is not known when or where the castling move has been invented in the game of chess, although some state that the move was created sometime in the 1500s because of the unprotected position of the rook and the king has an increasingly vulnerable position as the game develops. Pawn promotion can be a very powerful defense move that frees up some of the pieces that would have been used to guard the king. So there's a brief history of chess. The game of chess has evolved from a game called Chaturanga originally from India. It was introduced to the Persians when they invaded

the country. The game of chess eventually spread throughout Europe where the final changes were made. Changes such as using a checkered board instead of a plain one and the moves the king and queen were made. These rules were made official and spread throughout the world. Therefore, chess games and tournaments are being played all over the world. Modern technology has also changed the game of chess. It enables us to play chess anywhere and anytime. No longer do we have to wait for a human opponent. We can just turn on our electronic chess companion, and it's ready to play! When 3rd-sex dominates… in sports Being the grand slam champions, FEA (Composed of College of Forestry, Engineering, and Agriculture) proved their power over the three units during the university intramurals through

their outstanding performance in the different sports events. One important factor for their being a champion is their gender. Naturally, when it comes to sports, men dominate simply because they are physically stronger than

women. There’s no question about that. But, what caught the attention and admiration of the audience was when this gay student of College of Human Ecology in the name of Glenson Policina, a captain ball of unit II’s volleyball team, dominated the court and led his teammates into the finals during the intramural meet. Although he has feelings

of a real woman, he played and performed more than his teammates and opponents can. This proves that everyone has a place in sports may that person be a man or a gay because being a real man is not measured by one’s looks, physical strength, nor attractions to the opposite sex but by his determination to win and reach his goal.
