Current Activities Our second cohort of DM12 volunteers, inclusive of two AmeriCorps NCCC teams, hit the ground running last month! With high energy and commitment they’ve already helped us meet milestones such as packing enough food to feed 84,496 people for one week, thanks to our partnership with LA Regional Food Bank!

VOLUNTEERS VOLUNTEER HOURS

Our work with partner CORE is also going extremely well. Our teams have now been supporting the administration of COVID-19 vaccinations, as well as COVID-19 testings. And as essential workers, those that chose to, have themselves been vaccinated! For the duration of March, we’re also assisting with vaccine distribution at Kedren Community Health Center; a clinic focused on serving underserved populations. Additionally, the team has ramped back up their PPE distribution initiative in the community, with another delivery recently being made to our Skid Row partner in the Mayor’s Office.

Program Spotlight In order to ensure that our volunteers feel comfortable and prepared to respond if and when a member of the team contracts COVID-19, the staff has started to run Positive COVID-19 Case Drills once a month. Much like we run hurricane drills and earthquake drills on our other programs, this is an important best practice for preparedness in the COVID-19 context, and feedback from the team has been overwhelmingly positive. The team has also created a Positive Case Response Kit that includes N95 masks, face shields, hand sanitizer, paper towels, gloves and plastic bags (to assist in moving the positive case’s belongings safely and quickly). Disaster Profile The COVID-19 pandemic continues to cause significant impact to the Los Angeles (LA) County, California area. To date, there are more than 1,192,895 confirmed cases, over 21,467 deaths and the threat level is extreme — signifying that severe and uncontrolled levels of COVID-19 infection is spreading in the community and could quickly overwhelm the healthcare system.

Our Work In early July 2020, our assessment team deployed to Los Angeles to identify how we could be most effective in supporting the Los Angeles community through the COVID-19 crisis. Working closely with new and existing partners, we identified that the key needs related to COVID-19 were: more volunteers to assist with food distribution and back-of-house support for COVID-19 testing. In October 2020, we launched a program using our DM12 volunteer initiative that addresses these needs by increasing the capacity of partner organizations, LA Regional Food Bank and CORE who are part of the operation at Dodgers Stadium and Pierce College. With approximately 30 volunteers per cohort, alongside the volunteers of our partners, we aim to assemble 15,000 emergency meal kits, distribute 60,000 meals to families in need and orchestrate 30,000 COVID-19 tests and 50,000 vaccinations on a weekly basis.

About All Hands and Hearts We effectively and efficiently address the immediate and long-term needs of communities impacted by natural disasters. We communicate directly with local leaders and community members and then deploy our unique model of engaging volunteers to enable direct impact, helping to build safer, more resilient schools, homes and infrastructure. We have earned a 4-star rating by Charity Navigator for the seventh year in a row. This year only seven percent of rated non-profits received this distinction for financial and operational efficiency.
