JOBS COMPLETED

Our all-staff team continues to make good progress on our work queue and since reopening the program in October 2020, after a period of suspension for COVID-19, have completed seven, high-quality, interior home repairs, with a further three underway! Staff and volunteers have coordinated themselves so they’re able to run three sites at once, and are thankful for the generous grant from our partner, The Home Depot Foundation, which continues to enable them to purchase eco-option and sustainable tools and materials to provide long-term benefits of the work we do.

Community Stories Mr and Mrs Rojas’ home suffered some major damages during the storm; part of their roof was ripped off, a bedroom window was broken and water flooded down through the ceiling and walls into their kitchen. Having received little support with the repairs to date, and as primary caregivers to three of their grandchildren, they ranked as high priority based on AHAH’s needs-based assessment criteria. Kaela and her team have gutted and sanitized the damaged area, replaced the damaged studs, and are currently installing drywall and new flooring. They’re also painting the interior of the wall with mold inhibiting paint as an extra precaution. Photos: (top) Rockport, TX, (left) the team working on Mr and Mrs Roja’s home.

Disaster Profile Hurricane Harvey made landfall on August 25, 2017, near Rockport, Texas as a Category 4 storm that produced a record 52" of rain and 130-mph winds. One third of Houston was completely flooded, with an estimated 136,000 homes affected in Harris County alone. The Coastal Bend region was hit especially hard, and experienced $4.5 billion in damage to an estimated 39,927 structures.

Our Work Thanks to critical support from donors, partners and volunteers, we’ve worked in Houston and Coastal Bend since the immediate days after Hurricane Harvey. During the response phase, our teams were able to complete an impactful 16-week response program in Coastal Bend and an 18-week program in Houston. Since February 2018, our commitment to the recovery effort has concentrated site supervisors and volunteers on constructing high quality interior repair.

About All Hands and Hearts We effectively and efficiently address the immediate and long-term needs of communities impacted by natural disasters. We communicate directly with local leaders and community members and then deploy our unique model of engaging volunteers to enable direct impact, helping to build safer, more resilient schools, homes and infrastructure. We have earned a 4-star rating by Charity Navigator for the seventh year in a row. This year only seven percent of rated non-profits received this distinction for financial and operational efficiency.
