After a short operational suspension due to Winter Storm Uri, our all-staff team is back on track and working hard to fulfil our project commitments before they close out the program at the end of this month. Having worked in the region for nearly three and a half years, this is a momentous occasion for our team(s)! Winter Storm Uri Response All Hands and Hearts will be making plumbing repair kits to distribute to those impacted by Winter Storm Uri. We’ll be working in collaboration with our partners on the ground to ensure these resources make their way to those most in need. These kits will be made outside of Texas to not take away from local resources and be sent out when ready.
Community Stories Pamela Isaiah is a retired Air Force veteran whose home was damaged by Hurricane Harvey. Another organization was able to complete some of the repairs but were unable to finish due to COVID-19. Our team have been installing flooring in her bedroom and bathroom. They found a small amount of mold hiding behind the baseboard so have removed, sanitized, and replaced the boards and drywall. Disaster Profile Hurricane Harvey made landfall on August 25, 2017, near Rockport, Texas as a Category 4 storm that produced a record 52" of rain and 130-mph winds. One third of Houston was completely flooded, with an estimated 136,000 homes affected in Harris County alone. The Coastal Bend region was hit especially hard, and experienced $4.5 billion in damage to an estimated 39,927 structures.
Our Work Thanks to critical support from donors, partners and volunteers, we’ve worked in Houston and Coastal Bend since the immediate days after Hurricane Harvey. During the response phase, our teams were able to complete an impactful 16-week response program in Coastal Bend and an 18-week program in Houston. Since February 2018, our commitment to the recovery effort has concentrated site supervisors and volunteers on constructing high quality interior repair.
About All Hands and Hearts We effectively and efficiently address the immediate and long-term needs of communities impacted by natural disasters. We communicate directly with local leaders and community members and then deploy our unique model of engaging volunteers to enable direct impact, helping to build safer, more resilient schools, homes and infrastructure. We have earned a 4-star rating by Charity Navigator for the seventh year in a row. This year only seven percent of rated non-profits received this distinction for financial and operational efficiency. Photos (right): our team working on interior repairs.
