After a brief and safe evacuation during Hurricane Delta, our team, inclusive of AmeriCorps NCCC members, returned to our base of operations in DeQuincy, Louisiana and have resumed their vital response efforts. They are swiftly working their way through the work queue of chainsaw and roof tarping jobs and have also started assisting homeowners with debris removal and mucking and gutting. It’s clear there is a great need for longer-term recovery activities as well, as more people return from evacuation to find their homes uninhabitable. Many are having to live in tents, whilst others are turning to couch-surfing. In order to address these needs, we’re continuing to work closely with other local organizations, and are planning a transition to recovery activities in December, starting with a resilient roof repair program. We hope that by March 2021 we will also be supporting homeowners with full interior repairs.

Community Voices Victor’s name is synonymous with the word “caretaker” (pictured left). Living on a block with several other members of his family, he first made contact with us to work on his father’s property, then his brothers and then finally to take care of his own, where there was a felled tree and a damaged roof. Victor works in the education system and due to the pandemic, Hurricane Laura, and now Hurricane Delta, has not been able to return to work. Despite these challenges, he was more than happy to support our teams by passing tools and handing out hot dogs.

Disaster Profile Louisiana has been hit by four storms this year, the two largest of which have caused significant damage. On August 27th, Hurricane Laura pounded the Louisiana and Texas coasts, making landfall near Cameron, Louisiana as a Category 4 storm with 150-mph winds. Just six weeks later, on October 9th, Hurricane Delta made landfall as a Category 2 Hurricane in Creole, Louisiana. It followed a similar path to Hurricane Laura and compounded the damages already left by previous storms, as well as causing a lot more rainfall accumulation, with several places reporting up to 18” within a few hours.

Our Work Our Disaster Assessment and Response Team (DART) conducted on-the-ground assessments and we established a base of operations in DeQuincy, Louisiana, just northwest of Lake Charles. Our team is assisting families impacted by both Hurricane Laura and Hurricane Delta, and with the support of AmeriCorps NCCC members, has been focusing on response activities to date. We have committed to stay in Louisiana into 2021, and will be transitioning to a recovery program in December 2020. If you’d like to join us in supporting communities impacted by the Louisiana Hurricanes, please consider making a donation.
