CLASSROOMS IN PROGRESS

As part of our efforts to bring recovery after the Mexico earthquakes, we have begun with the reconstruction of two resilient schools in the community of Union Zapata, Oaxaca de Juarez, Mexico: the "Izcoatl" kindergarten and the "Revolution" primary. Even though this village officially belongs to the municipal government of San Pablo Villa de Mitla, its inhabitants govern themselves based on the uses and customs regime (the community has its own rules and locals have different public responsibilities). See here for a short video of the community.

Our Work In partnership with Happy Hearts Fund Mexico and with support from donors, partners and volunteers from around the world, we have run an impactful program in Mexico since February 26, 2018. Initially working in the state of Morelos, our efforts have most recently been extended. In "Izcoatl", we will reconstruct a building, two classrooms, an office, and a WaSH. To this day, the bracing for the water tank is ready, we have started with the brickwork for the walls, and the designs for the playground! In "Revolution" our work will consist of the reconstruction of two concrete roof demos, an office, a school library, and a WaSH retrofit. Also, we will refurbish six classrooms and repair the kitchen. Currently, with the help of our newly arrived volunteers, we have managed to set up the site and started backfilling with tepetate. On the other hand, our contractors have finished the demolition of the concrete roof slab of the library, office, and WaSH. We are still making progress with bathroom tile removal.

Disaster Profile The Central Mexico earthquake struck on September 19, 2017. The 7.1 magnitude earthquake caused severe damage in the state of Oaxaca de Juarez. Nearly two years after the devastating earthquakes hit, many kindergartens and primary schools are still unsafe for children to learn in, forcing many students to study in unsafe, temporary learning centers.

Community engagement In each of our programs, our staff, volunteers, and the locals, jointly organize and implement events and activities for the benefit of the entire community. In this way, with the aim of protecting the environment, we organized "Green Friday": a weekly night garbage collection and separation of solid waste (between organic and inorganic). Also, with the kind help of parents and teachers, we cleaned the space of the temporary school for the kindergarten children, before they returned to their classes on August 26th.

About All Hands and Hearts We effectively and efficiently address the immediate and long-term needs of communities impacted by natural disasters. We communicate directly with local leaders and community members and then deploy our unique model of engaging volunteers to enable direct impact, helping to build safer, more resilient schools, homes and infrastructure. We have been awarded a 4-star rating by Charity Navigator five years in a row, placing us in the top 10% of all non-profits evaluated for financial and operational efficiency.
