MEXICO EARTHQUAKE UPDATE - OAXACA (February 2019)

CURRENT ACTIVITIES For the past month, All Hands and Hearts has been in Oaxaca, Mexico laying the groundwork to bring resilience to a community shaken by the Central Mexico earthquakes. Here’s what we have underway in Oaxaca: CELSO MUNOZ PRIMARY SCHOOL ● Volunteers prepared worksites and began rebuilding 9 rooms across three plots, including 7 classrooms, a computer lab, and an office. ● Once we excavated the building plots and compacted the soil, we poured the plantilla. The plantilla is a thin layer of blinding concrete, which will establish a solid base for subsequent concrete pours. ● With the plantilla poured, formwork and rebar are being installed to prepare for the next concrete pour. ● On base, volunteers constructed extra facilities and made base improvements to pave the way for incoming volunteers.

Volunteers wheelbarrow materials and fill forms for the first concrete pour.

To inaugurate the construction of Celso Munoz, the community held an event highlighting the importance of collaboration and education. After speeches, each person contributed a stone to the foundation of the school.

On Friday mornings, volunteers spend time giving English lessons to the students of Celso Munoz Primary School. Above, a volunteer leads English lessons for a group of enthusiastic kids.

DISASTER PROFILE The Central Mexico earthquake struck on September 19, 2017. The 7.1 magnitude earthquake caused severe damage in the state of Morelos and the greater Mexico City area. OUR WORK In partnership with Happy Hearts Fund Mexico and with support from donors, partners, and volunteers from around the world, All Hands and Hearts – Smart Response has run an impactful program in Mexico since February 26, 1018. Initially working in the state of Morelos, we are now able to expand our efforts into Oaxaca, where we are working on Celso Munoz Primary School. Our work on the classrooms, computer room, office, and bathrooms, will give students schools a safe, secure place to go to school everyday.

OUR MISSION To effectively and efficiently address the immediate and long-term needs of communities impacted by natural disasters. By listening to local people, and deploying a unique model of engaging volunteers to enable direct impact, we rebuild safe, resilient schools, homes and other community infrastructure.
