MEXICO EARTHQUAKE UPDATE - MORELOS (September 2018)

DISASTER PROFILE The Central Mexico Earthquake struck on September 19, 2017. The 7.1 magnitude earthquake caused severe damage in the state of Morelos and the greater Mexico City area. OUR WORK In partnership with Happy Hearts Fund Mexico and with support from donors, partners, and volunteers from around the world, All Hands and Hearts – Smart Response has run an impactful program in Mexico since February 26, 1018. With the initial goal of rebuilding Narciso Mendoza Primary School underway, we are now able to expand our efforts to a second school and have begun work to rebuild Vicente Guerrero Primary School. Our work on the classrooms, computer rooms, multipurpose rooms, and bathrooms, will give students at both schools a safe, secure place to go to school every day. CURRENT ACTIVITIES Narciso Mendoza Primary School now boasts two colorfully-painted, two-classroom buildings! With the doors and windows fitted and electrical wiring run, the school is on its way to being ready for class. On the other two buildings at Narciso Mendoza Primary, the walls are being prepped for painting as plastering continues. The bathroom dividing walls have been poured and volunteers are ready to install the sinks. Outside of the classrooms, the concrete walking pathway that connects the buildings has been laid. At Vicente Guerrero Primary School, volunteers have poured the footings of the foundation and begun backfilling on what will be the new 3-classroom structure. Now that the column rebar is installed, the brick walls are getting higher every day. Work continues on the other classroom buildings at Vicente Guerrero, as volunteers put the finishing touches on the plastering work and begin painting the interior walls.

The brick walls of the 3-classroom building at Vicente Guerrero are on their way up! Vertical column rebar and horizontal plinth band rebar is installed and poured with concrete to keep the building strong in case of seismic activity.

At Narciso Mendoza, the brick walls enclosing the roof water tank and the septic tank have been completed, so the school will be fit with a new and efficient water and sanitation system.

Drive and Write Volunteers took a walk around Jojutla with a local community member. Previously, he shared the personal story of how the earthquake affected him and his family. Here, he leads a walk through the town, where volunteers can see the aftermath and rebuilding in the area. Back to School! All Hands and Hearts celebrated the beginning of the school year with the communities and children of Narciso Mendoza and Vicente Guerrero Primary Schools. The students will begin their year in temporary learning centers until the new, safe schools are completed.

OUR MISSION To effectively and efficiently address the immediate and long-term needs of communities impacted by natural disasters. By listening to local people, and deploying a unique model of engaging volunteers to enable direct impact, we rebuild safe, resilient schools, homes and other community infrastructure.
