MOZAMBIQUE CYCLONE RELIEF FINAL REPORT - MAY 2020
Program Update We’re proud to announce that our Mozambique Cyclone Relief Program is complete! It’s been just over a year since our Disaster Assessment Response Team (DART) arrived in Mozambique to assess the devastating damage caused by Cyclone Idai. We’re thrilled that in spite of all the odds—election related delays, severe flooding and the global COVID-19 crisis—the district of Nhamatanda now has two, new, disaster-resilient primary schools, EPC Julius Nyerere and EPC Harrumua. A special thank you to our staff, volunteers, partners and donors, without whose exceptional hard work and commitment this would not have been possible. We also extend our thanks to the local contractors who were brought in to complete the schools, after our team had to suspend operations just weeks before completion, due to COVID-19.
Community Voices Some members of the Harrumua community, that we lived and worked amongst over the past five months, explain what their new school means to them in this video. “It is fantastic that, despite all odds we managed to get those schools built, due to your [All Hands and Hearts] very good organization and capacity. We are honored to have been part of this.” - Local partner, ADPP “Your rehabilitation project of schools is an excellent example of resilient construction and Building Back Better, and the project also was finalized in a relatively short time.” - Director of Education, Sofala Province

Disaster Profile On March 14, 2019 Cyclone Idai made landfall near Beira, Sofala Province, Mozambique. With sustained winds of up to 185 km/hour and torrential rains, Idai caused widespread destruction across parts of Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe. More than 400,000 individuals were displaced, over 200,000 homes were severely damaged or washed away and a reported 4,222 classrooms were destroyed, impacting 336,125 students. Idai has been classified as one of the Southern Hemisphere’s most devastating storms on record.
Our Work With support from our local and global partners, we committed to rebuilding two schools in Sofala, the most affected province in Mozambique. Working closely with the local communities, we constructed new, disaster-resilient classrooms, an office space, improved WaSH facilities and a playground for each school, serving over 951 children. We increased our impact by facilitating interactive Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) training with over 120 members of the school communities, providing two construction apprenticeship positions and holding weekly language lessons. We’re also pleased to be able to donate all of our tools to Mission Educate, a local charity that runs a 3 year practical construction training course for 18-35 years olds. They currently have 300 students (30% women) and are thrilled to be gifted these additional resources, which will make a “massive difference”. Our base appliances, IT equipment and medical supplies have been donated to a small number of other local organizations, including Siluvo Health Post, EquipMoz, Care for Life and AJID.
About All Hands and Hearts We effectively and efficiently address the immediate and long-term needs of communities impacted by natural disasters. We communicate directly with local leaders and community members and then deploy our unique model of engaging volunteers to enable direct impact, helping to build safer, more resilient schools, homes and infrastructure. We have earned a 4-star rating by Charity Navigator six years in a row and a Perfect 100. Less than one percent of rated nonprofits have received this distinction for financial and operational efficiency.
