NORTH CAROLINA
HURRICANE RESPONSE SEPTEMBER 2018 - PRESENT
September 29, 2018
CURRENT SITUATION Hurricane Florence made landfall just outside of Wilmington, North Carolina on September 14th. Despite weakening in intensity to a category 1 storm, 90 mph winds uprooted trees and left 800,000 without power. Dumping 18 trillion gallons of water, Florence is the wettest tropical system to ever hit North and South Carolina. Record breaking rainfall, coupled with storm surge, caused a flooding crisis and emergency evacuations across the Carolinas. A total of 48 people have died as a result of the hurricane, 37 of which in North Carolina.
ALL HANDS AND HEARTS - SMART RESPONSE All Hands and Hearts - Smart Response is on the ground in New Bern, North Carolina where officials state that over 4,300 homes and 300 businesses in this area were damaged. Local government initially called on our rapid response team to establish a volunteer reception center in the community, while beginning assessments.
SCOPE OF WORK From initial assessments, we have identified an unmet need for residential flood cleanup. Our teams have begun muck and gut, debris removal, and chainsaw work in New Bern/Craven County. As we ramp up work in New Bern, our team continues to evaluate surrounding communities to find additional areas of need.
ALL HANDS AND HEARTS SMART RESPONSE Effectively and efficiently addresses the immediate and long-term needs of communities impacted by natural disasters. By listening to local people, and deploying a unique model of engaging volunteers to enable direct impact, we rebuild safe, resilient schools, homes and other community infrastructure.
