Canada Steamship Lines (CSL) is aiming to use biofuel in half of its Canadian-based fleet operating within the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway next year based on the positive results of its testing of the cleaner energy source this past season. “We basically ran two entire ships on used cooking grease for well over a month and it all seemed to work extremely well,” shares Allister Paterson, the executive vice-president and chief commercial officer for the CSL Group.
D’après les résultats concluants obtenus la saison dernière au terme d’essais sur des sources d’énergie plus vertes, Canada Steamship Lines (CSL) prévoit d’alimenter aux biocarburants la moitié des navires de sa flotte canadienne appareillant dans les Grands Lacs et sur le SaintLaurent, et ce, dès l’an prochain. « En fait, deux de nos navires ont fonctionné pendant plus d’un mois essentiellement avec de la graisse de cuisson usée, et tout avait l’air de fonctionner parfaitement », explique le viceprésident exécutif et chef de la direction commerciale du Groupe CSL, Allister Paterson.
CSL ran various biofuel tests aboard the self-unloader MV Rt. Hon. Paul J. Martin and the Trillium class bulk carrier CSL Welland. Onboard engineers started off with a 10% biofuel and 90% marine diesel fuel (MDF) mix in the generators, but then worked their way up to 100% in both the generators and the main engines without problem.

CSL a réalisé des essais avec différents biocarburants à bord de l’auto-déchargeur MV Rt. Hon. Paul J. Martin et du vraquier de classe Trillium CSL Welland. Dans un premier temps, les ingénieurs de bord ont utilisé un ratio de 10 % de biocarburant contre 90 % de carburant diésel marin (MDF) dans les génératrices. En augmentant progressivement le ratio, ils ont fini par n’utiliser que des biocarburants dans les génératrices et les moteurs principaux sans problème.
