Founded in 2007, Green Marine is the leading maritime sustainability program in North America. It derives from a voluntary initiative by the shipping industry in Canada and the United States. The environmental certification program quickly distinguished itself through its rigour, transparency and clearly defined framework to measurably improve the environmental performance of its participants beyond regulatory requirements. Originally developed for the St. Lawrence River and Great Lakes region, it promptly generated interest within the industry elsewhere and is now recognized throughout North America.
Fondée en 2007, l’Alliance verte est le principal programme de développement durable du transport maritime en Amérique du Nord. Il découle d’une initiative volontaire de l’industrie maritime au Canada et aux États-Unis. Le programme de certification environnementale s’est rapidement distingué par sa rigueur, sa transparence et son cadre détaillé permettant à ses participants d’améliorer leur performance environnementale au-delà des exigences règlementaires. Initialement conçu pour l’industrie maritime du fleuve Saint-Laurent et des Grands Lacs, le programme a rapidement suscité un intérêt ailleurs au Canada et aux États-Unis et jouit désormais d’une reconnaissance nord-américaine.
Green Marine has made remarkable progress since its inception in terms of its membership, program development, and global recognition. The steady increase of new members along with the continued loyalty of long-term participants are irrefutable proof of the program’s vitality. The program constantly evolves to respond to the specific environmental challenges of the participating membership. As a result, a voluntary initiative originally launched for domestic ship owners, port authorities and terminal operators in the St. Lawrence River and Great Lakes region is now international in scope. In North America, the program includes more than 140 domestic and international ship owners, port authorities, terminal operators and shipyard managers, as well as the U.S. and Canadian management corporations for the St. Lawrence Seaway. In 2019, Green Marine joined forces with Surfrider Foundation Europe to export the environmental certification program to France, giving rise to the brand-new Green Marine Europe in 2020. The European label works according to the same proven framework as the North American program. A RIGOROUS & INCLUSIVE PROCESS
Green Marine participants conduct a yearly self-evaluation of their environmental performance based on the program’s detailed criteria, and then accordingly rank their annual efforts for each performance indicator on a 1 to 5 scale. Level 1 constitutes monitoring of regulations, while Level 5 indicates leadership and excellence. To receive their certification, participants must have their results verified by an accredited external verifier and agree to the publication of their individual results. One of the program’s unique characteristics – and a pivotal element of Green Marine’s success from the outset – has been the active support from government agencies, research institutes and other environmental stakeholders.
L’Alliance verte a fait un progrès remarquable depuis ses débuts en termes de membership, de développement du programme et de reconnaissance. Par ailleurs, la croissance constante du membership est une preuve irréfutable de sa vitalité. Le programme évolue constamment afin de répondre aux défis environnementaux spécifiques à ses participants. Par conséquent, une initiative volontaire, qui a été lancée pour les armateurs domestiques, ports et terminaux du Saint-Laurent et des Grands Lacs, a maintenant une portée internationale. En Amérique du Nord, elle inclut plus de 140 armateurs domestiques et internationaux, administrations portuaires, terminaux et chantiers maritimes ainsi que les corporations de la Voie maritime du Saint-Laurent canadienne et américaine. En 2019, l’Alliance verte a collaboré avec Surfrider Foundation Europe afin d’exporter le programme de certification environnementale en France, donnant naissance à Green Marine Europe en 2020. Pour obtenir leur certification, les participants mesurent annuellement leur performance à l’aide des guides d’autoévaluation du programme environnemental. Les résultats déterminent leur classement pour chacun des indicateurs, sur une échelle de 1 à 5, où 1 représente le suivi réglementaire et 5, le leadership et l’excellence. Les participants doivent ensuite soumettre leurs résultats à un vérificateur externe accrédité et accepter de publier leurs résultats individuels. Le caractère unique de l’Alliance verte – et un élément essentiel de son succès – repose sur l’appui que le programme reçoit des milieux environnementaux, académiques et gouvernementaux depuis ses débuts. Les supporteurs de l’Alliance verte encouragent et appuient l’initiative de développement durable entreprise par l’industrie maritime.
