VARIOUS ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVES TAKE CENTRE STAGE AT CSL AUSTRALIA
DES INITIATIVES ENVIRONNEMENTALES À L’AVANT-PLAN POUR CSL AUSTRALIA
Celebrating its 20th anniversary last year, CSL Australia is also proud that for five of those years it has been Green Marine’s first participant down under. The division of the CSL Group has significantly improved its sustainability over this period by taking its cues from its Montreal-based parent company, Canada Steamship Lines – one of Green Marine’s founding members.
“We started off by benchmarking our existing operations for each of Green Marine’s environmental performance indicators,” recalls Rhiannah Carver, who spearheaded the Australian effort before transferring to CSL’s head office in Montreal to work first on environmental matters and now safety programs.
Once baselines were established, CSL Australia initiated various steps to measurably reduce the environmental impact of its fleet. “It really helped to have Caroline Denis, CSL’s manager of Environmental Programs, to help us prioritize efficiencies based on the Green Marine framework,” Carver says. As part of the CSL Group, CSL Australia also implemented the company’s energy efficiency audit program to focus on operational improvements and device retrofits. “It’s amazing the efficiencies that can often be achieved just by operating equipment differently,” Carver notes.
Various resulting improvements at CSL Australia have included the installation of LED lighting in each vessel’s tunnel, more efficient air compressors, as well as better drives on main seawater pumps. Propeller Boss Cap Fins have reduced drag-causing cavitation bubbles from each vessel’s propellers to improve fuel efficiency. A new main engine jacket heating pump as well as a hot well tank controller have the engine/boiler rooms all operating with less energy use, too. 24

CSL’s efficiency program has now evolved from the efficiency audits to include a wider goal of research and development. “We assess new technologies as they become available and investigate industry best practices,” Denis explains.
CSL Australia recently tried out a robotic hull cleaning system that automatically captures any loosened biofouling.
