Exceeding regulatory compliance is at the cornerstone of Green Marine’s environmental certification program. The framework engages participants in achieving measurable improvement on a continual basis. While Green Marine has substantially expanded its criteria, its performance indicators continue to prioritize the most pressing environmental issues within maritime transportation. This Above and Beyond column features some of the other initiatives that have been put in place by Green Marine participants thinking outside the box in terms of being sustainability change leaders in all possible areas.

The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation (SLSMC) is literally putting recycled glass to concrete use. As part of the repairs to the St-Lambert lock’s parking lot, a concrete slab containing recycled glass was installed last fall at the administrative building’s entrance. Almost half a tonne of recycled glass powder replaced Portland cement in the 12 cubic metres (15.6 cubic yards) of concrete poured to make the slab. The replacement gives the equivalent of 662 bottles of wine a second life. Recycled glass was incorporated at the suggestion of Ghfran Al Chami, one of the SLSMC’s civil engineers. “Our civil engineering department is now looking into the possibility of integrating this into our quotes and tenders for resurfacing the Seaway’s approach walls in Quebec,” says Steven Murray, the SLSMC’s environmental advisor. The approach walls are the concrete structures where a ship’s bow rests and slides into a lock’s entrance, both downstream 44
