Coronavirus Impacts Transport Industry CHINA’S SHUTDOWNS TO CONTROL CORONAVIRUS ARE impacting New Zealand trucking companies which carry exports like logs and meat to ports or Chinese imports to New Zealand warehouses and retailers. “It’s potentially going to get worse quickly,” says David Aitken, chief executive of National Road Carriers Association (NRC), which represents 1,800 road transport companies collectively operating 16,000 trucks throughout New Zealand. “With Chinese towns and cities in lockdown, many factories are closed and therefore not taking goods, nor producing goods. We are aware of importers who are not able to place orders and expect to run short if production doesn’t get back to normal soon. This has consequences for our sector. “A number of forestry operations throughout the country have stopped logging with the Forest Industry Contractors Association reporting about 30 percent of the country’s logging crews are unable to work amid the supply chain disruption and no one knows how long the situation will last. This will have a flow on effect to truck operators. “Meat works have reduced kills for the China market meaning farmers are having to keep stock even during the drought conditions we are experiencing, so stock are not being carried to

box-side tippers, bathtubs, right now we’ve got our first bathtub trailer going through to completion, we’ve got quite a big variety on the back of cab and chassis. That presents challenges but at the same time we’re trying to deal with those challenges by building smarter and being smarter in how we handle the operation.” “We try to outsource parts of our work when we can, it’s pretty common in the market now

to outsource profile cutters, people to profile the processing plate. That’s our focus, we don’t have large plant or equipment in the workshop taking up valuable floor space. We focus on using the skill sets out of other people in the industry to provide us the materials so that we can put the jigsaw together.” Homan Engineering is not based in one huge site either. “We operate out of two small size workshops, they’re separate sites within close proximity to each other, both are around 500m2 with a current staff count including the office of 13. As build numbers expand we’ll have to grow.”

2

What are his build number objectives? “I’d like to sit around that 50 builds a year, that gives me the sales revenue I want to achieve. The work is there, even though we did 42 units this year, we had a quiet patch around June/July, then it took off again. There’s plenty of enquiries out there at the moment, the biggest trouble is trying to keep on top of it. Being the new boys on the block we’re a little arse about-face, we’re sort of following the market where others are at to try and be competitive.” It seems that sticking to delivery times is one of the reasons that Homan Engineering is

3

so popular. “In the current market, there’s still demand

2. Deck cross members lined with

for full body builders and one of the key things at the moment, the feedback we’re getting from the likes of Keith Andrews and the Hino’s and Isuzu’s locally is our on time delivery. We say it’s going to be this delivery date and we’re on time or within a week of that date. We’re not 4, 5 or 6 weeks out from when we promised it. Our honesty has definitely been appreciated by our clients. We keep clients updated throughout the build too, every day we take photos of the build’s progress.” On the subject of builds, we want to know more about his latest work, the 8x4 conversion. “What happened is, I took a random phone call from Grant Walton from Pronto Hire a heavy earthmoving hire company in Auckland. He was looking for a body builder to build a new transporter, something more appropriate for transporting the equipment that they have. They were outsourcing some of their transport work but at the same time they already had an 8x4 transporter that they had purchased 2nd hand but it wasn’t up to the job. Another company

Based on Auckland’s North Shore, Glasstranz builds glazier trucks to suit the industry’s very specific and individual requirements. From frails for vans and light flat deck utes/trucks to harp rack and factory trolleys Glasstranz is a one-stop-shop but it’s their recent export to Australia that has them breaking new ground.
