A preservation of McKee Hall, the center of Knoxville College’s abandoned campus, as a schematic proposition to address circulation, structure, and space and influence the relationship between the community of Mechanicsville and institution of Knoxville College. Seeking to preserve the influences of the Historically Black College and Universities and the effects of the institution through the Civil War, Civil Rights movement, and understanding it’s relevance today. Through understanding local narratives, historical significance, monumentality of landscape, and cultural importance a deeper perspective is formed that promotes identity, dignity, and empowerment amongst the community and institution. This project seeks to question and understand the psychology of architectural negatives, the maintenance of permanence, and the potential of constructing citizenship.

CAN MATERIALIZED SPACE PROMOTE CITIZENSHIP THROUGH EVOLVING IDENTITY & SENSE OF DIGNITY - INFLUENCING THE CONSTRUCTION OF ONESELF & COMMUNITY?

removing fencing and clearing overgrowth along college st. will create a diminished boundary. there exists a confusion as to what is for community and what is for institution.

THE YARD the gathering place in which participants of the institution of Knoxville College exists within THE YARD. this manifests as the core of dorms and college facilities, thus leaving THE YARD as a gathering place for those belonging to the community of higher ed. a crucial characteristic of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities is the unique community of support and understanding amongst students and faculty, maintaining such a space primarily for the community of KC preserves this aspect of community, allowing it to manifest within the lawn and extend to the surrounding expanse. THE YARD maintains the dignity, identity, and pride of the HBCU, and Knoxville College, sustaining the communal aspects of the school. in the separation of THE YARD and THE LAWN is intention that persists as maleable, while being mutually inclusive and exclusive.

DISTANCE OUTPOST- within a space that accomodates many aspects of community and higher ed institution lies a territory exclusively available to the distance learning population of knoxville college. such a portion accomodates spaces for gathering, access to institutional resources, and a place of refuge and retreat for those participating in the academic realm of McKee Hall.

THE LAWN

McKee Hall

the gathering place in which participants of the community of mechanicsville are invited into is THE LAWN. this manifests as the approach to the site of Knoxville College, thus leaving THE LAWN as a place of invitation for those belonging to the outside community. as the current Knoxville College is represented by the symbol of McKee Hall, an abandoned structure on the hill, THE LAWN acts as the approach to the space. through lessening the intimidation and barriers of the current lawn and McKee Hall, a reconsideration takes place, forming a lawn that invites and welcomes the public to interact with the higher ed instution of KC. such a change allows for those who seem to be “outsiders” to understand their role in participating in the campus, allowing the community, city, and others to participate in preserving the historical relevance of Knoxville College.

TOWER AFFAIR- within the narrative of the bell tower lies the visual and tangible conjunction of town and gown. allowing visitors to exist within the realm of knoxville college, participate in ceremonial bell ringing, overlook the community of mechanicsville, and survey the city of knoxville- copious layers of interrelation are formed.

NOTABLE ANTIQUITY- persisting within the realm of the HBCU, and specifically Knoxville College lies its historical routes- those participating in the civil war, civil rights movement, and shaping expectations of higher ed institutions. these spaces accomodate those from the “outside” to experience such a narrative, understanding their role of acknowledging and learning about past occurances taking place on such a site.

a silent poverty. warped ceiling & floors displaying moist structure. drug enhanced violence portrayed in busted out windows. harmed newborn lungs mimicking kerosene filled rooms. the winter comes. frigid air seeps in. pnemonia takes over. the baby passes. mourning persists. domestic unrest increases. a family flees. the house is abandoned. the cycle continues. As our team began to understand the above cycles, walk alongside of the family, and to interact with the community, we became quickly aware of cultural misconceptions and pressing issues of the rural appalachian hollows. Many of the issues of our specific home could be solved by bulldozing the home and repplacing it with a mobile home - but we saw this act as a band-aid. W ith our very limited resources, and immediate need to winterize the home, we designed a system of window covers that allow for ventilation in the warmer months, and insulation in the cooler months. Challenged with irregular window sizes, few resources and small amounts of time, we developed and installed the pre-fabricated window system with the intentions of allowing the family to interact with the climate in a more thermally comfortable and safe manor.

MEATSPACE. MEATSPACE challenges the partitions of the corporeal versus the physic, attraction versus repulsion, art versus artifice, and the organic versus curated culture. Seeking to reconcile conceptions of what is strange and what is beautiful, the curated layering of MEATSPACE conceals the inner most vulnerable spaces, leaving only the carefully marinated membrane exposed. MEATSPACE speaks to the scale of the plate, the layering of communal vulnerability and spaces within a high-rise hotel in Manhattan- questioning the process of creating the meal, the beauty within raw flesh, and the transition from a red crushed velvet lobby to the private sauna.

IMPERCVABLE VISCERA. ingredients: velveteen rabbit- a stuffed substance sewn together with varying stitches

costco aspersion- the confusion between the exposed and the concealed

doubting thomas- questioning what exists behind behind perceived exteriors

marinated sheath- doctoring what is seen on the exterior to conceal interior flesh

tissue network- diverse elements working to unify the entirety of a structure

pompidou echo- a naked fleshy substance exposed for the public eye

domesticated lard- the flesh, trained to rarely reveal a sense of true self

peking procedure- a curated process of concealing layers

BEAUTIFUL REPULSER both body and food, beautiful and repulsive, nature and culture- this is meatspace. we begin to mediate a response to the raw flesh, tucking bits of innards behind pieces of butterflies and flower petals. the flowers, being glorious in bloom and brown as they decay throughout their entire life cycle act as a way to conceal the realities of the innards. we become repulsed by the juxtaposition of meat and flowerscreating a moment of reflection and deeper thought of what lies behind the facade of the two. 00B

Off of the mainland of scenic Norway exists a small island called Husøya place once known for its prominent fishing industry, and existing as a place of peace and rest. It is here that one begins to grasp the intimacy of the sauna, the realm of the natural and the abstracted knowledge of place through the norwegian island and culture of Husøy. providing reference to the local fishing culture, native landscape through a space for communal research, gathering and hospitality, this design creates a place of refuge- one for the locals, tourists, and researchers coming to study in silence. Understanding the values of the local landscape, this design considers approach, forcing occupants to engage with the waterfronts and hillsides through particularly curated views and physical interactions.

a place to document the interactions of man and fossegrimen - a scandinavian folklore that explains music and culture. informed by the tales of the fossegrimen, this form seeks to transform the experiential tones of an interaction through the realm of emotions- utilizing water and sound. Existing as an underground structure, connected to a waterfall through sound and light, this space allows scientists to study the ephemeral qualities of the fossegrimen. As one moves from the exterior, further into the depths of the retreat, one is greeted with intensly increasing harmonies of the fossegrimen’s fiddle - being further disconnected physically, but more united through the senses. While resting in the deepest cavity, one experiences the physical presence of water, the manifestation of sunlight, and heightened sounds of the fossegrimen, without directly interacting with the creature.
