2 Sample Answers Tell me about yourself: I grew up in Jakarta and have lived there my whole life. As my parents love to visit the US, Iʼve had the opportunity to visit New York a few times, and it has so much to offer, especially in terms of the literary scene. I love reading and writing, so Iʼm planning on majoring in English or journalism. Journalism seems like a good fit because Iʼm good at noticing the details and know how to dig deep. Iʼm proud of my ability to persevere and overcome challenges. This year I was having a hard time in math, but I met with the teacher outside of class and committed to studying for two hours a day, and ended up with an A in the class. Iʼm also really passionate about my interests, especially writing and foreign languages. Thatʼs why Iʼm a columnist for my school newspaper and the president of the Spanish club. I also tutor English and Spanish at an after-school program in Jakarta. Iʼd love to attend NYU because it has such strong English and journalism programs. Iʼm also interested in foreign languages, and I hear NYU has an amazing study abroad program. Plus, as I mentioned earlier, New York is such an amazing city, especially for an aspiring writer.

The most unique trait of Northwestern University is its focus on undergraduate research. I am very interested in biology and chemistry; I just love working in laboratories. In my schoolʼs chemistry lab in Jakarta, we were often confronted with a problem that we had to solve in groups.
Such problems could be as easy as distinguishing water from ethanol, or as complex as building a hydrogen fuel cell. From these experiences, I found that I could see myself working in a laboratory and enjoying myself. A further very good quality of Northwestern University with its great reputation. I seek a good education and definitely appreciate it. If I went to a second-rank college I would be better off studying in nearby Singapore. The last point is the location: itʼs just great; right next to the lake, in the nice and cozy town of Evanston.
Tell me about a challenge that you faced and how did you overcome that challenge?
When I was a young, awkward teen, I considered myself to be a shy person, especially around boys. Because of this, my experiences at a coed middle school intimidated me somewhat. So, for the past five years, I have attended an all-girls school, which has helped me to become a stronger person. I have overcome my shyness and insecurities and developed much more confidence.
You have the advantages of a small town, such as lots of greenery and a quiet environment, and yet Chicago is very close and accessible.

In high school, I joined Peer Support. It is a high school-sponsored program through which juniors and seniors are selected to work with eighth-graders. Here, I learned how to listen effectively to and become mentors for the younger students. Somehow I saw myself in these kids and learned that a lot of people actually share my problem.

Knowing that I was never alone and working in teamwork wonders for me. Perhaps the person I am today is compensation for who I was years ago. That awkward twelve-year-old, however, is no more. Now I want to show the world what I can do. Communication has become my passion.
