INTRODUCTION This portfolio represents my empirical journey as a growing landscape design professional. Developing a passion for both the natural and constructed environment has led me to find special interests in the interrelation between the human person and creation of nature. My educational and professional career has incorporated experiences to progress my leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills as well as my enthusiasm to expand my knowledge in the field. Every design challenge demands a creative solution requiring insight and a rigorous set of disciplines to achieve harmony. My design approach involves researching a site’s context and ecology, a community’s history and culture, and the connections and impacts these issues have upon its surroundings. Each landscape, like each person, has a story to tell, and the job of the landscape architect is to bring that narrative to life.

Sheetz, Straban Township DESIGN PROCESS Sheetz, in Straban Township, will be going through a re-build for a site that was constructed 14 years ago. The new site features a design that is larger and more spacious with a drive-thru feature, supporting the Sheetz Made-To-Order food component. The challenge with the site design was planning and coordinating the new building, fuel canopy and circulation around the existing facility in order to minimize business disruption during construction. This strategy and the resulting site design required additional land and the extension of the adjoining future Township road. The landscaping ordinance requirements for Straban Township are very strict for this site composition and became complicated with the addition of streetscape improvements, residential landscape buffer, vehicle headlight screening and calculating the required planting units. For the client and township to visualize the idea of the streetscape and headlight screen, the utilization of Google SketchUp and Adobe Photoshop was valuable to create a perspective view of this addition and attain conditional approval.

Sheetz, York Township DESIGN PROCESS The proposed 6,012 square foot Sheetz convenience store with 10 vehicle fueling positions is located to the south of Leader Heights Road (S.R.0182) east of Keyway Drive and west of Crossway Drive in York Township, York County. The site is situated on two zones; Commercial Shopping & Commercial Industrial. Currently the site is going through the York Township Zoning Hearing Board with a special exception for a fuel dispensing facility, along with a waiver for the last parking stall being separated from drive aisles by a planting island. Multiple site layouts were created in attempt to minimize the amount of waivers needed to be requested, but also to keep the site consistent with how Sheetz expects their store exterior to function. Upon Zoning approvals, the land development process will begin with the expectation of approval by the end of 2015

GELCOR, Starbucks Streetscape DESIGN PROCESS Located in the Peebles Plaza Shopping Center in Straban Township, Adams County, PA, Final Land Development plans for the creation of a stand-alone Starbucks Coffee store were approved in the Spring of 2014. The Straban Township ordinance requires streetscape elements along the entire frontage of Route 30. These elements include; sidewalk, striping at intersections, lights, trees and ADA accessible ramps that stretch over eight-hundred lineal feet from Ruby Tuesday to Starbucks. A revised final land development plan was created with sidewalk locations, grading and landscaping plan were included. These revised plans were recorded in April 2015 and construction has begun.

Wetland Mitigation - Commercial

MITIGATION PLANTING PLAN MATCH LINE (SEE SHEET WM-1)

During the construction of the Weis Markets Grocery Store in Hampden Township, Cumberland County, the contractors dumped soil into a Palustrine Emergent (PEM) wetland near the intersection of Wertzville Road and Valley Road. The purpose of this wetland mitigation plan and Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) permit is to provide a minimum of .18 acre of replacement wetland, as well as 75 linear feet of streambank stabilization, shrub plantings and 100 linear feet of random boulder placement within Pine Creek to compensate for stream and wetland impacts. The detailed grading plan, with quarter foot contours, depicts an outfall pipe that emptied into a meandering streambank that provides a habitat for insects, wildlife and reduces downstream flooding by allowing sediments to settle before clogging areas downstream.

Burk Mansion DESIGN PROCESS Owned by Temple University, Burk Mansion is an abandoned property on North Broad Street in Philadelphia. Now slated for restoration as a guest house for VIP university guests, this elegantly detailed Victorian residence has suffered thirty years of neglect. Stipulated design elements included site grading, improved visibility, site security, ADA accessibility and an applicable setting for the renowned Henry Moore sculpture, Reclining Woman. The proposal features a central plaza, enveloped by colorful low maintenance plantings, to promote attention to the architectural details of the historic mansion. The Henry Moore sculpture, situated in the center of the gathering area, with a overflow fountain placed below creates the captivating focal point. A security system surrounding the property provides safety, while the ramp at the front entrance provides accessibility to the gathering area and mansion.

Callowhill - Spring Garden Gateway DESIGN PROCESS Located in the Chinatown-Callowhill neighborhood of Philadelphia, this corridor is dominated by the heavily traveled roadways of Spring Garden and Broad Street. During the Industrial Revolution this area became a factory district pressuring local residents to relocate to suburbia while causing the decline of city life. This project focused on renewing the original neighborhood while embracing current urban trends of restoring family life in the city with a specific emphasis on safety and entertainment for children. Drawing upon ideas proposed by the neighborhoods’ community members, the solution proposed new technology, building renovations and a design strategy turning the sidewalks into a modern, accessible and vibrant destination for residents and visitors alike. By incorporating the vibrant and celebrated Avenue of the Arts into this project, the site will attract year round visitors. An outdoor performance area provides space for musicians and artists while an art education building provides indoor space for theatre.

21

DESIGN OBJECTIVES Distinguishing Characteristics: To create a sense of place by utilizing landmarks for easily recognized identity by enabling one to distinguish where they are throughout the city of Philadelphia. Transit-Oriented Development: Designed to maximize public transportation this proposal enables city residents to travel into the area spurring economic development. Stormwater Management (Philadelphia Green Streets Program): The Green Streets Program adopted by the city of Philadelphia employs a combination of vegetated and engineered strategies to manage rainwater or melting snow runoff. This permits water to soak into soil, thereby filtering it, thus improving the quantity of stormwater diverted to Philadelphia’s sewer system.

PHS Flower Show Exhibit, ‘WILDE!’ EXHIBIT CONTEXT Spirits, beasts, and outcasts were believed to lurk in old English forests, so residents naturally perceived it as mythically ‘WILDE’. Over time the wilderness become more mythical as creatures were believed to live within it. But ‘wilderness’ is everywhere even today in the most urban places. Our exhibit presented a simple, attractive and affordable way to cultivate wilderness. The idea was germinated from medieval English gardens spanning the 5th to 15th centuries including monastic, royal, and noble gardens as bastions of civilization and wilderness.

CONCEPT DESIGN DESIGN PROCESS A two semester design/build project, “WILDE! Cultivating Wonder in Everyday Places” was designed and installed for the 2013 Philadelphia Flower Show under the theme ‘Brilliant,’ derived from British influence. As project manager, I was responsible for overall coordination, financial oversight, and workflow. I also served on the Orchard team which addressed the design and construction of the landing, exit path, orchard walls, arbor, water feature, and planting design. 23

BOG - Beyond displaying unique plants that thrive in moist areas, the bog demonstrates that embracing seasonal plant changes and natural accidents including fallen trees which can be provocative and inspiring. ROCKERY - Here we demonstrated how concrete can be broken up and recycled into dry-stacked or gabion walls combined with “wild” pioneer and native plant cultivators in a contemporary rockery. ORCHARD - Foreshadows a future when many creatures contribute to and benefit from cultivation. Columnar tree varieties can offer food, shelter, shade and enclosure within urban vacant lots or suburban yards.

Daylesford Abbey Detail

Planting Design, Detail Design

DESIGN PROCESS This detailed planting design of the Love and Forgiveness Garden, in the Daylesford Abbey Master Plan, depicts the five senses that humans can possess; smell, taste, touch, sight and sound. Each sense is paired with a scripture that references or relates to that specific sense on a stone boulder. All the plants selected for the five senses create different interactions and can act as a teaching moment on how plants have benefits that canAmphitheater assist with meditation and the healing process.
