Spring 2019 - Spring 2023 Allison Janik

My name is Allison Janik and I am a 5th year Landscape Architecture student, with a minor in Historic Preservation, at Ball State University. The combination of LA and Historic Preservation allows me to not only design, but interpret how the past can influence the future.

In my free time outside of school, I enjoy getting outside when the weather is nice, expanding my knowledge in forestry and drone technologies, learning new recipes to bake and cook, and spending time with family and friends.

HABITAT CREATION WETLAND

ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN

This Nature Reserve project was a group project that combined the habitats of two endangered species in Delaware and Randolph counties in Indiana. The two species that were catered to are the Eastern Red Bat (Lasiurus borealis) and the Spotted Turtle (Clemmys guttata).

The intent was to use GIS to find suitable sites per habitat necessities. The site was then designed for the habitats and visitors.

Overall, this design aimed to create a fully immersive experience for the visitors of the site into the habitats of the Eastern Red Bat and the Spotted Yellow Turtle. Outside of habitat restoration and visitor experience, the goal was to establish water resource management across the site.

Drafting techniques: Hand drawn (plan), Photoshop rendered (all graphics), Lumion (perspectives), and CAD linework (details and sections).

All the World’s a Garden | Charbagh: Paradise in the Garden

All the World’s a Garden was a project that intended to highlight on different types of garden design based on a culture that we, as students, had not designed for before. The main focus that I chose was a Charbagh, which brings Southern Asian culture into an already established botanic garden in Glencoe, Illinois.

Overall, this design aimed to interpret the main ideals of the Charbagh into a potential modern design example for the Chicago Botanic Garden.

Drafting techniques: Lumion (plan and perspectives), Photoshop (plan and sections), and CAD linework (sections).

that attract birds, and shade trees, which were used to create a cool and relaxing space.

Located on an empty island within the Chicago Botanic Gardens, “Paradise in the Windy City” is a modern, midwestern rendition of a traditional Charbagh.

Planting Purpose/Intent

- Differing bloom types/colors

- Colors similar to Persian art

- Lush, beautiful appearance

- Bountiful with fruit

The final plan of this garden shows the standard symmetrical shape of the Charbagh, with the planting beds being divided into quadrants. Eight layers are shown through both the retaining walls, holding the planting beds, and the waterways step down, eight steps, towards the centralized fountain. Seating was added in many areas, not only for viewing pleasures, but for leisure as well. Planting choices include fruit trees, fruit-bearing shrubs, shade trees, and pollinator friendly perennials.

-Multiple times of interest (seasonal)

The refugee camp project took refugees from a given country (Burundi) and relocating them in another country (Tanzania) that maintains a similar geometry to their origin. In order to relocate, we needed to establish units and other necessities, i.e. health care, emergency services, education, etc., for the refugees to allow them to continue their culture

Overall, this project intends to establish the culture of the people in the camp, and create a cohesive living environment for all of the refugees and workers that come to site.

Drafting techniques: Hand-drawn (plan, close-ups, and sections), Photoshop (plan), and Illustrator coloring (plan, closeups, and sections).

SOLAR DECATHLON - UNDER CONSTRUCTION - INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA

Initial house design for the Solar Decathlon competition. This house is a duplex with accessibility required to at least one unit. The design utilizes a boardwalk pathway approach for accessibility and limited need for grade change to manipulate the site.

Second house design after teams consolidated. This design takes a similar boardwalk approach, but maintains a ramp and stairs at the main entrance to allow for accessibility.

Final house design that is under construction as of 2022. This design utilizes pavers, permeable pavements, planting beds to mitigate the need for a mower, raised accessible planters, and rain

VERDANT VISTA - MUNCIE, INDIANA

Verdant Vista was a project that took an area of Muncie where improvements needed to be made. I chose a location that acts as a threshold into the Whitely neighborhood and accesses downtown. This area is intended to become a community outreach resource, and a space for visitors to learn about the vibrant history of Whitely.

Wright-O is a project that envelops us as designers with our ideal for a future home, that being one from Frank Lloyd Wright (Heurtley House in Oak Park, Illinois). We were told to design a yard using planting design knowledge in order to craft a home for ourselves at the age of 30.

Overall, the intent of this design was to cater to the wants and needs of myself and my future family, while establishing seasonal interest throughout all planting beds. Per the client:

IMMACULATE CONCEPTION - PARK DESIGN

Immaculate Conception is a park in Whiting, Indiana, which is under construction as of 2022. This park used to be the site of Immaculate Conception the church. Working on this project, I helped with the masonry and fencing details, as well as updating sheets for bid. This project was special to me, as I grew up in Whiting at my grandparent’s house, which was within walking distance of this church.

In this project, I learned:

- working with a Mason

- Drafting details

- How to work with brick

20

MONON COURT - RESIDENTIAL COURTYARD DESIGN

Monon Court is a project that is on and off in Mccordsville, Indiana. This project is the courtyard design for an apartment complex. I aided in the drafting of details, creating a Sketchup model, and updating sheets.

Shown are unique details that I worked on for small intimate objects on the site, including the grill station, pergola swings, and fire pit.

Throughout this project, I helped with drafting details and updating sheets while also learning the ins and outs of LandFX.

In this project, I learned:

- how to use LandFX - how to draft ornate details - courtyard amenity design

21

LANTERN ROAD - PLAYGROUND CONCEPTS

Lantern Road is an elementary school in Fishers, Indiana. The school wanted to redesign their playgrounds and consolidate them away from the main road. These designs tried to reuse the existing asphalt for budget requirements.

The redesign utilizes budget friendly options of reuse and cheaper alternatives for play equipment.

In this project, I learned: - working within a budget - how to research for play equip. - playground design

22

LEBANON FIELDHOUSE - DISTRICT MASTERPLAN DESIGN

Lebanon Fieldhouse is a large-scale development of a destination in Lebanon, Indiana. The design has a sports facility with hotels, fast food, entertainment, and shopping. This masterplan is currently under development as of 2022. I helped draft parking and a preliminary planting plan per the municipal code, as well as masterplan rendering (seen below)

In this project, I learned: - how to read a PUD - campus masterplanning - plan rendering
