Dear community,
As I write this column, we are about to celebrate the completion of the Benton Center Testing and Learning Center upgrade, a project made possible by our community voting to pass LBCC’s General Obligation Bond in May 2022. The project, which was delayed due to supply shortages, finally reopened its doors in 2024 and has been helping our students ever since. The updates to expand the center will provide more tutoring support to our students on our Corvallis Campus, many of whom are dual-enrolled students also attending OSU.
A number of additional projects from the bond have been checked off and completed: Upgrades to the Albany Campus Courtyard, renovation of the Periwinkle Child Development Center, and much-needed infrastructure upgrades to roofs and heating systems on our Albany campus.
The remaining bond project is the largest: a state-of-the-art Agricultural Education Center located a mile from our Albany Campus on Looney Lane within the boundaries of Tangent. The center will be the only educational facility of its kind in our region—and the West Coast.
While LBCC has proudly been educating our future farmers in Agricultural Sciences for over 50 years, the new center will allow us to expand our agricultural programming and have our first-ever multi-species livestock wet lab. For those of you who work with agricultural youth programs, the large arena will be able to accommodate events, fundraisers, and fairs while serving our students. Additional 2-year programs will follow, including our proposed Veterinary Technology Program, meeting a workforce shortage in our region. Two-year programming in agriculture also fulfills the needs our close partner, OSU, has been seeking for decades.
The groundbreaking will happen this spring once the rain ceases long enough to move around the field safely. We are incredibly excited to be able to serve our regional Ag community by educating the next generation of farmers. There will be many opportunities to engage and support this project. I encourage those interested in learning more to connect with our Foundation, which is spearheading the capital campaign to complete the project. LBCC’s role in preparing the workforce for the future of the Agriculture industry is another example of our success at providing Education for All.
Thanks,
Lisa Avery Linn-Benton Community College President
• Registration starts Monday, Feb. 24 at 8:00 a.m.
• Spring term is in session March 31 - June 13
• LBCC will be closed and no classes will meet April 4 and May 26.
