Scam Artists Target Older Adults – Repeatedly

need money. Please don’t tell Mom and Dad; they don’t want to get in any more trouble. What’s a caring grandparent to do? Don’t fall for it. “It’s a scam,” said Frances Wright, director of the Otsego County Office for

Among Many Challenges, Older Adults Must Watch Out For Numerous Scams SCAM/From B1 country, fake charity mailings asking for donations. “It concerns me,” she said. “Some of them are very aggressive.” With the fake charities, one well-meaning donation isn’t enough. “It isn’t just once a year, they want more and more money,” she said. “It becomes hard to turn them down.” One mailing that was brought to her attention had “Your Document Request Form is Enclosed” on the envelope. Inside, it turned out to be a solicitation for a program offering to pay “100 percent of funeral expenses up to $35,000.” It looks legitimate, said Wright, but small print at the bottom warns that it is “not affiliated with any government agency.” “Some of these look very official,” she said. “Others may look threatening, warning that if you don’t act now, you won’t be able to later.” By sending that card back, she said, you get on the company’s mailing list and will continue to get solicitations even if you are on a “Do Not Call” registry. As one nears 65, the mailings really start rolling in. “You start seeing mailings for alternate insurance plans with death benefits or different Medicare coverage,” she said. “But the truth is, you may not need coverage for funeral expenses or an insurance plan with death benefits – it may mess up the insurance plan you already have.” And although there are legitimate enrollment seminars at venues around the

county, Wright says seniors should exercise caution when signing on the dotted line in the ballroom. “I was just working with a man who chose one of these nontraditional Medicare plans,” she said, “only to find out it didn’t cover his diabetic supplies – you need to make

sure it covers your needs.” On receiving a suspicious call, e-mail or mailing, Wright encourages seniors to check in with someone to make sure it’s legitimate. “Ask someone you trust if it’s OK,” she said. “Anyone can fall prey to one of these scams.”

ounty Office on Aging Director Frances Wright identified four other issues older adults are dealing with in 2015: ► BOOST YOUR INCOME: With some retirees living on less than $1,000 a month, you may be eligible for HEAP heating assistance, Food Stamps and additional veterans’ benefits. ► FIND HEALTH AIDE NOW: Designate a “health-care proxy” before you need one. With a shortage of home health aides, often a friend, neighbor or child can be selected and paid for their time. Advice is also available on when to consider an assisted-living facility. ► DRIVE CAREFULLY: With declining eyesight and reflex time, consider taking the bus, or asking a friend or family member to drive. Technology is a growing option: Groceries can be ordered online and delivered. ► STAY ACTIVE: Take a class or volunteer to maintain social connections. The Center for Continued Adult Living is increasingly popular, as are exercise and joining a club. well. “You have to keep a positive outlook,” she said. – By Libby Cudmore

Here’s Some Advice For safety at home

O

lder adults living at home should consider these safety

tips. • Consider a medical alert or a buddy system. • Keep a fire extinguisher and smoke detector on every floor. • Use extreme caution when smoking. Never smoke when alone or in bed. • Always get up slowly after sitting or lying down. Take your time, and make sure you have your balance. • Wear proper fitting shoes with low heels. • Use a correctly measured walking aid. • Remove or tack down all scatter rugs. • Remove electrical or telephone cords from traffic areas. • Avoid using slippery wax on floors. • Wipe up spills promptly. • Avoid standing on ladders or chairs. • Have sturdy rails for all stairs inside and outside the house, or, if necessary, purchase a stairlift. • Use only non-glare 100 watt or greater incandescent bulbs (or the fluorescent equivalents). • Make sure that all stair cases have good lighting with switches at top and bottom. • Staircase steps should have a non-slip surface.

IN MEMORIAM FriendS Say Goodbye to Kellie Place

Ian Austin/HOMETOWN ONEONTA

Friends and family gathered in the Foothills atrium on Sunday, Jan. 25 to say goodbye to Kellie Place, who died unexpectedly on Sunday, Jan. 18. Here, Leonard Singer speaks on how Kellie made him a better person by “not letting him get away with things” and “engaging together to make people’s lives better.”

Margaret E. Cawley, 93; Professor Founded Lifelong Learning Center ONEONTA – Margaret E. Cawley, 93, a SUNY Oneonta music professor who helped establish the Center for Adult Learning, passed away on Jan. 20, 2015, in Concord, N.H. A lifelong scholar, Peg was born in Mount Vernon, Westchester County, the daughter of James S. and Margaret W. Cawley. Peg earned an associate degree from Colby Junior College, a bachelor’s from New York University and a master’s in music from the University of Michigan. For three years, she taught music in Chatham, N.J., public schools, 12 years at Colby Junior College (now Colby-Sawyer College), one year at Vassar College and 23 years at SUNY Oneonta. She was nominated to the SUNY Music Department Hall of Fame in 2009. Peg’s major instrument in early years was flute; later she played recorder, harpsichord and viola da gamba. She also conducted choral and chamber music groups and orchestras. After retirement, she helped establish the Center for Lifelong Learning in Oneonta and taught a new music course in each of 10 years. For more than 50 years, Peg shared a home with special friend Jean D. London. Both were gener-

ous philanthropists. Peg’s hobby of photography led to many exhibits and slide shows. Another hobby, Margaret Cawley letterpress printing, resulted in many hand-printed poems, cards and booklets for family and friends. Peg and Jean enjoyed travel in the U.S. and Europe, and Peg followed a family tradition of quiet water canoeing. Peg was predeceased by a sister, Jeanne Marshall Pritchard of La Jolla, Calif., and her lifelong companion, Jean D. London.Survivors include a sister, Nancy C. Jerome of E. Thetford, Vt., 10 nieces and nephews and their children. At her request, there was a preplanned body donation to the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College and there will be no services. A memorial concert will be held at Concord Community Music School at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Peg’s name to a charity of one’s choice would be appreciated.

Elena attended The Knox School, which at the time operated out of The Otesega, and graduated with honors from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Prior to her marriage, Elena pursued an acting career, which included summer stock and a brief stint on Broadway. Due to a strong resemblance to Judy Garland, Elena was once offered a role as Garland’s stand-in. She also studied at the Arts Student League of New York. In later years, Elena took up

volunteering. Well into her 80s she was handling consumer complaints on behalf of the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs and teaching reading as part of a prisoner reentry program. Elena is survived by her brother, Victor, and two children, her son, Richard, and her daughter, Louise Raymond, who live in Brooklyn Heights and Park Slope, Brooklyn, respectively.
