OZ/From B1 “I had a younger brother, a younger sister and an older sister, and they dressed up like the characters too.” His research also turned up colorful, and occasionally off-color, stories about the Baums generally . “In the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the Baums were known for taking their horses and lanterns out to the shore – ships would think it was safe to come into port, but would run aground. The Baums would then go aboard, kill everyone and steal their cargo.” There’s still a Baum Road in the Outer Banks, and a bit of that wicked Baum blood still runs through his veins. “If I’d had some tools on me, I would have stolen it,” he cackled. A career Navy man who worked maintenance on aircraft carriers and served a tour as a drug and alcohol counselor, Baum was on his first command in Japan when he got the nickname
that would stick with him for the rest of his service. “Pilots get nicknames based on their name or something they’ve done,” he explained. “One of the pilots said the author of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ was a Baum, and I told him we were related – my nickname was Ozian.” But more than a nickname or Halloween photos, Baum says the story has deeper, personal meaning for him. “They went to the Wizard to get what they didn’t have – a brain, a heart, courage – but all they needed was some affirmation. I grew up not trusting who I was, and I needed someone to hold the mirror up to me.” A member of the First Night committee, he’s considering asking to show “The Wizard of Oz” as part of the classic film series; he’ll do the introduction. “It’s nice having a family history you can grasp onto: It doesn’t make us famous, but it’s nice to pass on.”

Nice Touches Keep ‘Home’ At Nursing Home’s Center MANOR/From B1 Otsego Manor’s five wings are “neighborhoods.” Each is divided into three “households,” with its own set of residents’ rooms, kitchens and living rooms, spread out over 144,000 square feet, more than doubled from the 73,000 square feet of the Meadows, with the same number of beds. “Some of the rooms at the Meadows had four residents per room, with just privacy curtains,” said Marchi. “Can you imagine living in your home for 80 years and then having three roommates?” Gone are the generic green or plain yellow walls. Display cabinets are filled with seasonal knick-knacks. Local photos or landscapes are framed on the walls. And each household has its own color scheme – Mountain Ridge, for example, has purple wainscoting. “Some are more formal, some are more “cuddly,” said Marchi. “The design is small and intimate – they’re little group homes.” This day, residents choose between hand-carved roast beef with gravy, chicken and biscuits or a breaded pork chop. Dabs of whipped cream are placed as a finishing touch on strawberry shortcakes. The manor’s “social model” is designed to allow residents to follow their own routines. “It helps avoid behavior problems, especially in patients with dementia,” explained Marchi. “Routines are the things that hold us together when everything else might be failing – when you disrupt their routine, they act out, they become combative, they won’t eat.” “The way we do care, we avoid those problems,” he continued. “When we reduce behavior problems,
we reduce the need for psychotropic medications, and which makes for a higher quality of life.” The day starts, of course, with breakfast. “If you go to most traditional nursing homes, they bring carts and pull the residents out of bed,” he said. “For someone whose been getting up at 9 in the morning their whole lives, that can be jarring. If someone gets up at 5:30, a nurse will scramble them an egg.” The fridge is always stocked with Chobani yogurt and ice cream cups, and bowls piled high with apples and bananas sit on the kitchen table. One household even has packets of Fig Newtons and Lorna Doones available for residents seeking some sweets to nibble. “We make it so that nobody ever has to go without,” said Laurie Butts, resident dietician. In the livingroom, residents can watch TV, put together puzzles or, like in Mountain Ridge, play the piano, which is stocked with sheet music for classics like “Stormy Weather” and “Honeysuckle Rose.” Kids visiting grandma and grandpa can even play video games together. “The residents like Wii Bowling,” said Marchi. “A little kid can sit here and play video games, and the other residents can enjoy the kid being there. It’s more of a home visit – residents get engaged at a higher level.” The home atmosphere also keeps away the aroma characteristic to many nursing homes that often upsets children. “There’s no odor like in a typical nursing home,” said resident Jean Pysnik. “I don’t want my children to come in here and smell Nana.” But aside from TV,

there’s plenty to keep the residents busy. The downstairs neighborhoods have courtyard access, and in the summer, gardening classes help cultivate the flower and vegetable plots. Or they can gossip with the hairdresser, Linda Coe. “I tell them about my love life and they fall asleep,” she joked. “They tell me about theirs and I blush!” “We’ve had a few resident romances,” Marchi added. RN Marcy Hoffman spent the mid-morning training her “High Kickers” for the Manor Olympics. “These wonderful girls are going to take the gold medal for dodgeball,” she boasted, tossing a beach ball to a resident, who kicked it back into the circle.
On the whiteboard, art class and a prayer meeting were also listed for the afternoon. “All neighborhoods have daily programs,” Marchi said. “And there are also community events.” The community events
include shopping trips and visits to local museums, painting and computer classes, happy hours and local musical acts. “But they don’t push you into doing activities,” said Jean. “They let me do anything
I want,” added Bernice Knight, with a grin. “If I want to wash my hair, they bring me five towels.” The biggest worry for the residents is that all of that will go away when Otsego Manor is privatized.

Each year Cooperstown is transformed into an enchanting “Christmas Village” for the holidays. Local families converge on Main Street to decorate a favorite lamppost, the whole community turns out to greet Santa as he arrives in his festive sleigh, and throughout the season, Santa is in residence in his cottage to greet hundreds of children. With the generous support of local businesses, a group of volunteers from the community, the Chamber of Commerce and the Lake and Valley Garden Club spend countless hours setting into motion the numerous tasks required to bring this magical holiday transformation to our village. Since the entire project is funded through private donations and coordinated by volunteers, we rely on your individual contributions for our budget. Your generous donation of $25 or more will help light our community with the spirit of Christmas. Any donation you can make will be greatly appreciated. OBITUARIES
THURSDAY-FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 15-16, 2012
Wendy, Willis Brown, 58; Active In Community Wendy and Willis Brown died Wednesday, Nov. 7, at their home in Franklin. Both were 58. Meeting while 26-yearold students at SUNY Oneonta, they discovered their mothers had shared a room at Sidney Hospital when they were born. Willis was the third son of Laverne and Ruth Brown and Wendy was third daughter of William and Caroline McReynolds. They married June 20, 1981. They had three sons, one of whom, William, died in infancy. Garrett is IT director at Rising Tide Charter school in Plymouth, Mass., and Daniel is a freshman at RPI. Willis visited his mother weekly at Otsego Manor. Wendy worked closely with her sister Erna at The Morgan McReynolds Group at Morgan Stanley in Oneonta. Erna has called Wendy her “second skin.” Wendy was known as the family angel – she looked after and cared for everyone who came near. She was a passionate perennial gardener and spent happy hours improving her flower beds. Willis loved the outdoors, especially canoeing and solo camping. He helped set up a blog on camping and canoeing. Willis was a SUNY Delhi professor of applied sciences and building technologies, and was 2012 Faculty Tutor of The Year. Wendy was Oneonta Rotary president-elect. She organized the group study exchange for the club; her family hosted two youth exchange students. She also served on the boards of the Catskill Symphony Orchestra and the Franklin Stage Company, and was active in Franklin’s Save our School campaign. She worked with her sister, Erna, and her brother-in-law,

The Browns are survived by their sons and their partners, Holly Stanford and Angie Willert, and Willis’ mother. Willis is also survived by brothers David and Marty, and their spouses Mary and Betty. In addition to Erna and her husband, Wendy is survived by sisters Maxine and Betty and their husbands, Keith Allen and Jerry Robinson, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews. A service of remembrances was Sunday, Nov. 11, in the Atrium at the Foothills Performing Arts Center. There will be a special version of “A Hometown Christmas” in honor of Wendy and Willis in the evening of Friday, Dec. 21, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Franklin. Memorial contributions may be made to the Oneonta Rotary Club. Arrangements were entrusted to the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home.

Wendy was the valedictorian of her class at Gilbertsville Central School. She went on to Upstate Medical to become an RN, and later she received her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from SUNY Oneonta. Willis completed a bachelor’s in physics from SUNY Oneonta, then went to Syracuse University for a bachelors in electrical engineering, and pursued a career in engineering in Wisconsin, California and Texas. He also served in the Navy for six years. In 2001, Wendy and Willis moved back to New York State, to Franklin, to be closer to family.
