General Safety Instructions Hedge trimmers operate at very high speeds and can do serious damage or injury if they are misused or abused.

Never allow a person without training or instruction to operate your 22DH Hedge Trimmer WARNING! Never make unauthorized attachment installations. Never use attachments not approved by Shindaiwa for use on this unit.

Stay Alert You must be physically and mentally fit to operate this unit safely.

WARNING! Never operate power equipment of any kind if you are tired or if you are under the influence of alcohol, drugs, medication or any other substance that could affect your ability or judgement.

WARNING! Minimize the Risk of Fire NEVER smoke or light fires near the hedge trimmer.

ALWAYS stop the engine and allow it to cool before refueling.

Avoid overfilling and wipe off any fuel that may have spilled.

ALWAYS move the unit to a place well away from a fuel storage area or other readily flammable materials before starting the engine.

NEVER place flammable material close to the engine muffler.

NEVER run the engine without the spark arrester screen in place.

SAFETY

Work Safely

WARNING! Use Good Judgment ALWAYS wear eye protection to shield against thrown objects.

NEVER run the engine when transporting the unit.

NEVER run the engine indoors!

Make sure there is always good ventilation. Fumes from engine exhaust can cause serious injury or death.

ALWAYS clear your work area of trash or hidden debris that could be thrown back at you or toward a bystander.

ALWAYS stop the unit immediately if it suddenly begins to vibrate or shake. Inspect for broken, missing or improperly installed parts or cutters.

ALWAYS keep the unit as clean as practical. Keep it free of loose vegetation, mud, etc.

ALWAYS hold the unit firmly with both hands when cutting or trimming, and maintain control at all times.

ALWAYS keep the handles clean.

ALWAYS disconnect the spark plug wire before performing any maintenance work.

NEVER use a cracked or broken cutter or cutter bar; replace it with a new or serviceable one.

NEVER attempt to adjust the cutter with the engine running.

The Properly Equipped Operator SAFETY

Always wear hearing protection such as earmuffs or earplugs.

Wear close-fitting clothing to protect legs and arms.

Gloves offer added protection and are strongly recommended. Do not wear clothing or jewelry that could get caught in machinery or underbrush.

Secure hair so it is above shoulder level. NEVER wear shorts!

Always wear eye protection such as goggles or safety glasses.

Always operate with both hands firmly gripping the unit.

Keep a proper footing and do not overreach. Maintain your balance at all times during operation.

Always make sure the cutters are correctly adjusted and in good condition.

Wear appropriate footwear (non-skid boots or shoes): do not wear open-toed shoes or sandals.

Never operate the unit while barefoot!

Be Aware of the Working Environment

Inspect the cutting site thoroughly prior to operation. Remove objects that could get entangled by the cutter blade. Note the locations of fence posts and other fixed objects and avoid cutting them.

Make sure handgrips are free of foreign substances such as lubricant and pitch.

Never operate this unit if any safety guards are missing or damaged.

Do not allow cutters to contact buildings or other hard objects during operation. If a cutter should bind fast in a cut, stop the engine immediately. Remove the cause of the bind before proceeding.

Never cut metal objects or wire with the blade.

Before moving to another job site, stop the engine and install the blade cover.

Always keep proper footing and do not overreach.

Maintain your balance at all times during operation.

SAFETY

Avoid cutting large or extremely woody branches.

Doing so can shorten cutter life, and damage the gearcase.

Avoid long-term operation in very hot or very cold weather.

Throttle Cable Adjustment 1. This hedge trimmer is supplied fully assembled. To make sure the unit operates correctly, check the throttle lever: —the throttle lever should operate smoothly without binding. —the throttle lever should have about 1/4-inch (5-10mm) free play when the engine is not running.

2. If free play adjustment is required, loosen the two 10mm throttle cable nuts at the throttle cable bracket.

3. Adjust the throttle cable nuts until you achieve correct throttle free play. See Figure 6.

4. When 1/4-inch (5-10mm) free play is achieved, tighten the two 10mm throttle cable nuts. When the throttle cable is correctly adjusted, and the throttle trigger is fully depressed (full throttle position), the throttle should contact the full throttle stop. See Figure 7.

Mixing Fuel

Filling the Fuel Tank

CAUTION!

CAUTION! This engine is designed to operate on a 50:1 mixture consisting of unleaded gasoline and a Premium 2-cycle mixing oil only. Use of Non-approved mixing oils can lead to excessive maintenance costs and/or engine damage.

■ Use only fresh, clean unleaded gasoline with a pump octane rating of 87 or higher.

■ Mix gasoline with 50:1 Shindaiwa Premium 2-cycle mixing oil or with an equivalent high quality 2-cycle mixing oil.

Example of 50:1 mixing quantites: ■ 1 gallon of gasoline to 2.6 oz. mixing oil.

■ 5 litres of gasoline to 100 ml. mixing oil.

WARNING! Minimize the risk of fire!

■ Stop the engine before refueling.

■ Always allow the unit to cool before refueling!

■ Wipe all spilled fuel and move the unit at least 10 feet (3 meters) from the fueling point before restarting!

■ Never smoke or light any fires near the unit or fuels!

■ Never place any flammable material near the engine muffler!

■ Never operate the engine without the muffler and spark arrester in place and properly functioning!

■ Never operate this hedge trimmer if fuel system components are damaged or are leaking!

OPERATION

Some gasolines contain alcohol as an oxygenate! Oxygenated fuels may cause increased operating temperatures. Under certain conditions, alcohol-based fuels may also reduce the lubricating qualities of some mixing oils.

Never use any fuel containing more than 10% alcohol by volume!

Generic oils and some outboard motor oils may not be intended for use in high-performance air cooled 2-cycle engines, and should never be used in your Shindaiwa engine!

1. Place the hedge trimmer on a flat, level surface.

2. Clear any dirt or other debris from around the fuel filler cap.

3. Remove the fuel cap, fill the fuel tank with clean, fresh fuel mixture.

4. Install and firmly tighten the fuel cap.

IMPORTANT! Mix only enough fuel for your immediate needs! If fuel must be stored longer than 30 days and Shindaiwa One oil with fuel stabilizer is not used, it should first be treated with a fuel stabilizer such as StaBil™.

WARNING! KEEP CLEAR OF THE CUTTERS DURING STARTING OPERATIONS! THE CUTTERS MAY MOVE WHEN THE ENGINE IS STARTED! ■ Place the hedge trimmer on the ground during all starting operations.

OPERATION

■ Make sure you have a secure footing, and keep a firm grip on the unit as well.

■ Keep all bystanders and pets well clear of the hedge trimmer during starting operations.

2. Set the throttle lever to the “fast idle” position by performing the following: See Figure 9. a. Depress and hold the throttle lockout lever, then squeeze the throttle lever. b. Depress and hold the throttle lock button.

IMPORTANT! Engine ignition is controlled by a twoposition switch mounted on the throttle body labeled “I” for ON or START and “O” for OFF or STOP.

c. While depressing the throttle lock button, release the throttle lockout lever and throttle lever.

1. Move the ignition switch rearward to the START position.

See Figure 8.

3. Prime the carburetor by depressing the carburetor primer bulb 4 or 5 times until you see clear fuel flowing through the transparent primer bulb. See Figure 10.

IMPORTANT! The primer system only pushes fuel through the carburetor. Repeatedly pressing the primer bulb will not flood the engine with fuel.

4. (Cold Engine Only) Move the choke lever forward to the “closed” position to choke the engine. See Figure 11.

8. Open the choke by moving the choke lever backward toward the fuel tank, if it isn't open already.

9. If the engine does not continue to run, repeat the appropriate starting procedures for a cold or warm engine.

5. Place the machine on the ground.

Grip the engine cover with your left hand and the starter handle with your right hand. See Figure 12.

10.When the engine starts, clear excess fuel from the combustion chamber by accelerating the engine several times with the throttle lever.

6. Pull the starter handle slowly toward you until you feel the starter mechanism engage.

11.Operating the throttle will automatically disengage the fast idle setting.

7. Start the trimmer by pulling the starting handle rapidly outward.

■ Repeat the appropriate starting procedure for a cold or warm engine.

CAUTION! Do not pull the recoil starter to the end of the rope travel. Pulling the recoil starter to the end of the rope travel can damage the starter.

If the engine does not start–

■ If the engine still fails to start, use the procedures for “Starting a Flooded Engine,” (next page).

Starting a Flooded Engine STOP Position

WARNING! Move the ignition switch forward to the STOP position.

1. Disconnect the spark plug lead, then use the spark plug wrench to remove the spark plug (counterclockwise to remove).

OPERATION

3. Set the ignition switch to the STOP position and open the choke. See Figure 15. Fully depress the throttle lever with your left hand and pull the starter handle rapidly with your right hand several times to clear excess fuel from the engine combustion chamber.

2. If the spark plug is fouled or is soaked with fuel, clean or replace the plug as necessary. For spark plug specifications and gapping procedure, see page 18.

Incorrect spark plug installation can result in serious engine damage!

4. Replace the spark plug and tighten it firmly with the spark plug wrench. If a torque wrench is available, torque the spark plug to 148-165 inch-lbs (170-190 kg-cm).

5. Repeat the starting procedures for a warm engine.

6. If the engine still fails to start or fire, refer to the troubleshooting chart at the end of this manual.

Stopping the Engine Ignition OFF Ignition Switch

Adjusting Engine Idle The engine must return to idle speed whenever the throttle lever is released. Idle speed is adjustable, and must be set low enough to permit the engine clutch to disengage the cutters.

1. Cool the engine by allowing it to idle for 2–3 minutes.

2. Move the ignition switch forward to the STOP position. See Figure 16.

The cutters must NEVER oscillate at engine idle speeds! If the idle speed cannot be adjusted by the procedure described here, return the trimmer to your Shindaiwa dealer for inspection.

1. Place the unit on the ground, then start the engine, and then allow it to idle 2–3 minutes until warm.

2. If the cutters oscillate when the engine is at idle, reduce idle speed by turning the idle adjustment screw counterclockwise. See Figure 17.

3. If a tachometer is available, the engine idle speed should be finaladjusted to 3,000 (± 250) rpm (min-1).

NOTE: Carburetor fuel mixture adjustments are preset at the factory and cannot be serviced in the field.

NOTE: Using non-standard replacement parts could invalidate your Shindaiwa warranty.

Daily Maintenance Prior to each work day, perform the following:

Muffler This unit must never be operated with a faulty or missing spark arrester or muffler. Make sure the muffler is well secured and in good condition. A worn or damaged muffler is a fire hazard and may also cause hearing loss.

WARNING! To reduce fire hazard, keep the engine and muffler free of debris, leaves, or excessive grease.

Make sure nuts, bolts, and screws (except carburetor adjusting screws) are tight.

MAINTENANCE

■ Carefully remove any accumulations of dirt or debris from the muffler and fuel tank. Dirt build-up in these areas can lead to engine overheating, fire, or premature wear. See Figure 19.

■ Clean any debris or dirt from the hedge trimmer cutter blades.

Lubricate the blades before use and after refueling. Check the cutters for damage or incorrect adjustment.

■ Check for loose or missing screws or components. Make sure the cutter attachment is securely fastened.

■ Check the entire unit for leaking fuel or grease.

10-15 Hour Maintenance CAUTION!

CAUTION!

Do not operate the unit if the air cleaner or element is damaged, or if the element is wet.

Before removing the spark plug, clean the area around the plug to prevent dirt and debris from getting into the engine’s internal parts.

Every 10 hours of operation, (more frequently in dusty or dirty conditions): Remove the air cleaner element from the air cleaner housing and clean it thoroughly with soap and water. Rinse and dry thoroughly. Add a few drops of oil and work it in, then reassemble.

See Figure 20.

Every 10 to 15 hours of operation: ■ Remove and clean the spark plug.

See Figure 21. Adjust the spark plug electrode gap to 0.024-inch (0.6 mm). If the plug must be replaced, use only: –For EPA version: Champion CJ8

Gearcase Lubrication Schedule CAUTION! Over-lubricating may cause the gearcase to run slower than normal, and may also cause leakage from excess grease.

Gearcase Grease Fitting

Every 20 Hours Connect a grease gun to the grease fitting on the left side of the gearcase.

Top off the gearcase grease level by adding a high quality lithium-based grease. Three pumps of the grease gun handle should be adequate. See Figure 22. DO NOT OVERFILL THE GEARCASE!

Remove the gearcase cover. Use solvent and a soft brush to remove all old grease from the gearcase. See Figure 23. To refill, hand-pack the gearcase with approximately 40–50 grams of high quality lithium-based grease (50–70% of capacity). DO NOT OVERFILL!

WARNING! Never operate this machine with a damaged or missing muffler or spark arrester! Operating with missing or damaged exhaust components is a fire hazard, and may also damage your hearing.

Filter Element

■ Use a hooked wire to extract the fuel filter from inside the fuel tank.

See Figure 24. Inspect the fuel filter element. If it shows signs of contamination from debris, replace it with a genuine Shindaiwa replacement fuel filter element.

Before reinstalling the filter, inspect the fuel line. If you discover damage or deterioration, the unit should be removed from service until it can be inspected by a Shindaiwa-trained service technician.

■ Hard starting or a gradual loss of performance can be caused by carbon deposits lodged in the muffler’s spark arrester screen.

Remove the screen from the muffler with the point of a small pliers. See Figure 25. Thoroughly clean the screen with a stiff bristle brush. A damaged or otherwise unserviceable screen must be replaced. Reinstall by gently tapping the screen in place.

CAUTION! Make sure you do not pierce the fuel line with the end of the hooked wire. The line is delicate and can be damaged easily.

■ If carbon accumulations in the muffler or cylinder are severe or if you do not notice an improvement in performance after servicing, return the trimmer to your Shindaiwa dealer for inspection.

Cutter Adjustment

Long Term Storage (30 days or longer)

WARNING!

CAUTION!

The cutter blades are very sharp!

Always wear gloves when working around the cutter assembly!

CAUTION! Operating the hedge trimmer with worn or improperly adjusted cutters will reduce cutter performance and may also damage this unit.

1. Loosen all blade locknuts at least one full turn.

2. Tighten each blade shoulder bolt firmly, and then loosen the shoulder bolts 1/4 to 1/2 turn.

3. Working from the gearcase end, lock each bolt in place by firmly tightening its locknut while preventing the shoulder bolt from turning.

When shoulder bolt adjustment is correct, there should be a gap of 0.025–0.050 mm between the cutter blades and the flat washers, and the flat washer beneath each bolt head should turn freely.

NOTE: Your Shindaiwa warranty does not include coverage for damage caused by stale or contaminated fuels.

■ Thoroughly clean the exterior of the machine.

■ Remove all clippings and other debris from the cylinder fins and other components (as previously described under Daily Maintenance).

■ Drain all unused fuel from the fuel tank, and then clear the carburetor and fuel lines by running the trimmer until it stops from lack of fuel.

All stored fuel should be stabilized with fuel stabilizer such as STA-BIL™ ■ Remove the spark plug, and pour about 1/4 ounce of 2-cycle mixing oil into the cylinder through the spark plug hole. Before reinstalling the spark plug, slowly pull the recoil starter 2–3 times to distribute the oil over the cylinder wall.

■ Service the air cleaner element as previously described in the daily maintenance section of this manual.

■ Repair or replace any damaged components as required, and then store the unit in a clean, dry, and dust-free area.

MAINTENANCE

Cutter performance of this unit depends in great measure on cutter blade clearance. Properly adjusted blades will oscillate freely yet help prevent binding of cut material between blades. Adjust blades as follows (Figure 26):

Never store this unit with any fuel remaining in the tank, fuel lines or carburetor!

Manufacturer’s Warranty Coverage

The California Air Resources Board, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Shindaiwa Kogyo Co., Ltd. are pleased to explain the emission control system warranty on your new small offroad (non-road) engine.

In California, new small off-road engines must be designed, built, and equipped to meet the State’s stringent anti-smog standards. In other states, new 1997 and later non-road engines must meet the Federal EPA’s stringent anti-smog standards. Shindaiwa Kogyo Co., Ltd. must warrant the emission control system on your small off-road engine for the periods of time listed below, provided there has been no abuse, neglect, or improper maintenance of your small off-road engine.

Your engine emission control system includes parts such as the carburetor, the ignition system and, if equipped, the catalytic converter.

These components are specifically listed below.

Where a warrantable condition exists, Shindaiwa Kogyo Co., Ltd. will repair your small off-road engine at no cost to you including diagnosis, parts, and labor.

When sold within the U.S., this engine’s emission control system is warranted for a period of two (2) years from the date this product is first delivered to the original retail purchaser.

During the warranty period, Shindaiwa Kogyo Co., Ltd. will, at their option, repair or replace any defective emission-related component on this engine. During the original Warranty Period, these Warranty Rights are automatically transferable to subsequent owners of this product.

Owners Warranty Responsibilities As the small off-road engine owner, you are responsible for the performance of the required maintenance listed in this owners manual.

Shindaiwa Kogyo Co., Ltd. recommends that you retain all receipts covering maintenance on your small off-road engine, but Shindaiwa Kogyo Co., Ltd. cannot deny warranty solely for the lack of receipts or for your failure to ensure the performance of all scheduled maintenance.

As the small off-road engine owner, you should be aware, however, that Shindaiwa Kogyo Co., Ltd. may deny you warranty coverage if your small off-road engine or a part has failed due to abuse, neglect, improper maintenance, or unapproved modifications.

You are responsible for presenting your small off-road engine to an authorized Shindaiwa Dealer as soon as a problem exists. The warranty repairs should be completed in a reasonable amount of time, not to exceed 30 days.
