OLD SAINTS ALL SAINTS’ COLLEGE

From the President It has been a busy year for the Old Saints despite COVID-19. With some restrictions easing in Western Australia, we were able to reschedule Reunions, Beers, Bubbles & Bites and our Committee meetings. Throughout the year it has been great to see the passion and commitment of committee members, regardless of the uncertain year we faced. The Old Saints have managed to significantly increase, develop and strengthen our relationships with the College and former students. This year we awarded an Old Saints Service and Endeavour Award to Charles Street (1998) for Inkwazi, which partners with not-for-profit Elephant, Rhinos and People (ERP), promoting their #BIKES4ERP campaign which builds and delivers bicycles directly to children in rural South Africa. Many children have to walk over 20km to and from school each day across rugged terrain in

1

extreme weather. The bicycles help students to attend school on time, concentrate on tasks and have more time to study, ultimately empowering them to complete their education. Charles is speaking to All Saints’ students at a forthcoming assembly about the project. Beers, Bubbles & Bites (BBB) took on a new format this year, including a return to the Centre for Performing Arts. It was well attended, with a significant increase in the number of current and former staff attending. Old Saint numbers were the largest we have seen to date. We provided Old Saint Chris Fell (1988) the opportunity to cater the event. Chris and his wife Chelsea run a catering company called Smile Events. The catering exceeded exptectaion and consisted of a grazing table, slider bar and dessert cart. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 our long-standing Futures Expo and Heritage Week were cancelled. We look forward to re-establishing these events in 2021.

Mary Thornton worked on the Pixevity project throughout 2020, completing a high level of scanning and data matching. Funding has been approved for another year by the Old Saints and we look forward to the project continuing. Connections via social media continued to grow, demonstrated by an increase in our Facebook year groups as well as the launch of the Old Saints LinkedIn page. Katelyn Hann, our Alumni Coordinator, continues to monitor and grow these platforms. This bumper edition of Dovetails features stories on BBB 2020, Reunions, Old Saints Business promotions, the Old Saints’ Service & Endeavour Award, and an introduction to the 2021 Old Saint interns working at ASC, and much more. We hope you enjoy this edition!

Beers,

Bubbles & Bites Old Saints and former and current staff gathered on Friday, 6 November 2020 for a special tour of the College to see how much it’s changed! The annual Beers, Bubbles & Bites event (held in the Centre for Performing Arts) was attended by more than 155 enthusiastic guests who enjoyed beer, wine, food, magic tricks and entertainment from College bands. It was a wonderful evening, as many old friendships and memories were rekindled with much laughter and enjoyment had by all. Nostalgia was rife as old and new buildings were visited.

Former Staff Reunion

Louise Latino (2019)

On Thursday, 4 March 2021 we hosted our inaugural Former Staff Reunion at the College. We were delighted to welcome back several former staff to catch up with one another over some refreshments, before going on a tour of the campus to witness the many changes that have taken place at the College.

3

Louise Latino’s artwork is featured on the front cover of our newly-designed Dovetails. Louise was inspired by Starla Michelle’s work and put her unique twist on the piece. With a passion for art since a young age, Louise knew she wanted to put it to good use and share her skills with others. In Year 9, Louise started working for a local business called Adventures in Art; she is now the instructor of multiple art classes.

It was wonderful to see so many former staff reconnecting and reminiscing on their days at ASC. Thank you to everyone who joined us at our first reunion for 2021. Thank you to the following who attended: John Beaverstock, Keith Brewin, Tim Brown, Janet Brown, Sue Channer, Bob Glasheen, Bruce Groves, Elizabeth Harrison, Gail Horne, Marilyn Knox, Anne Miller, Ann Strautins, David Thomson, Patricia Tyrrell, Robin van Dongen, Ann White, Norma Williams and Kent Williams.

Adventures in Art runs art classes designed to assist artists who want to experiment with new mediums. The classes are held four days a week and the business also runs holiday workshops, birthday parties and a special adult class combining bubbles and painting. If you would like to commission a unique piece of Louise’s artwork, you can contact her on louiselatino24@gmail.com

In October last year, the Former Students’ Association officially welcomed the Class of 2020 into the Old Saints’ community with a BBQ hosted by alumni members.

The Year 12s enjoyed a sausage sizzle prepared by some of the Old Saints’ Committee, while catching up during one of their final lunches together as a cohort. Mark Balding (1988) spoke to the students to encourage them to stay connected to the College and the Old Saints. Each Year 12 student was given an Old Saints business card holder and a deck of Old Saints playing cards. Thank you to the Old Saints who volunteered to cook at the BBQ, and to Mark for sharing his words of wisdom. We look forward to keeping in touch with the members of our Class of 2020.

Congratulations to our 2020 ATAR Dux, Rémi Hart, who achieved a score of 99.7 and our 2020 ATAR Proxime Accessit winner, Travis Gauntlett, who achieved 99.6.

OLD SAINTS’ WALK At All Saints’ College, we believe that by honouring those who have come before us, we can better develop a deep appreciation of where we are today, and thus effectively shape our College’s future direction. This process of acknowledgment reminds us that as the current custodians of the College, we owe our today to the yesterday of others. All Saints’ College is proud to be making its heritage more visible by creating the Old Saints’ Walk which provides the opportunity for alumni and families to recognise and celebrate their time at the College. Former Staff Spotlight Valedictory Speaker On 22 October 2020, our Class of 2020 was recognised for their outstanding achievements in various areas and formally farewelled at the College’s Valedictory Dinner. Held at HBF Stadium, Year 12 students were joined by their families and members of staff at the celebratory evening, and reflected on their time at the College and their successes during the year. During the evening, Old Saint Rebecca McCrackan (1995), who currently works as Intellectual Property Legal counsel for an S&P global 100 company, delivered an engaging speech to the Year 12s. Rebecca shared her own experiences from Year 12, and beyond, and how she discovered her purpose. We would love to hear from any Old Saints wishing to speak at Valedictory Dinners or other College events in the future. For more information please contact Katelyn Hann at katelyn.hann@allsaints. wa.edu.au 11

Each edition of Dovetails, we will be catching up with one of our former staff members to allow the community to better become acquainted with the remarkable staff who have worked at the College. This edition, we caught up with Robin van Dongen, who joined the College community in 1984. Robin began her time at the College as a part-time Mathematics teacher. She was the inaugural Year 8 Coordinator – a position she mentioned as being a thoroughly enjoyable experience as it enabled her to meet all students entering Year 8 (the first year of Senior School at that time). When the position of Relief Coordinator arose, Robin leapt at the opportunity.

In this role, she covered for absentee teachers as well as becoming the Induction Officer and worked with new staff members. After retiring in 2012, Robin and her husband were enticed by the travel bug! Firstly, they travelled to Europe to go on a cruise along the Danube and Rhine Rivers and then hired a car to travel around the UK. Returning to Australia, the pair decided to buy a caravan to spend 18 months exploring this beautiful country. Robin has fond memories of Camp Week which was mainly spent in the Margaret River region. She loved abseiling and rock-climbing in the great outdoors. Now living in a Retirement Village for over 55s, Robin still enjoys sporting activities such as swimming, table tennis and Tai Chi, thanks to the village community group.

Old Saints’ Working Together Lara Kirkwood (2003) and Hayley Parker (2003) are currently working together to assist the City of Cockburn with communicating the City’s Vision. Lara mentions, “It was great knowing that we had been to high school together and fantastic to see how far we have both come since leaving school.”

Well done to Old Saint Dayne Metzner (2019) who was awarded Community Support Worker of the Year at Identitywa. Identitywa is one of Western Australia’s leading agencies supporting people with disabilities and their families. Identitywa works in partnership with individuals and families to build a community where people with disability enjoy a fulfilled life.

Ellen Smith (2020)

Congratulations to Ellen Smith from the Class of 2020 who is one of only 10 graduates from across the state to receive a prestigious 2021 UWA Fogarty Scholarship.

Dayne Metzner (2019)

Late last year, Ellen wrote: “Ultimately, I have decided to pursue Medicine at university. However, my experience with entrepreneurship and innovation at the College has encouraged me to expand my goals beyond simply this one pathway. Through incredible opportunities such as the Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship Education Camp in China, as well as my leadership role as Enterprise Captain, I have developed a passion for business and enterprise which I hope to carry into the future. Exactly what that will look like for me, I am yet to discover!”

Dayne was first introduced to disability work at the College when he volunteered with the Disabled Surfers’ Association. This provided him valuable industry experience for his current job at Identitywa. Dayne currently works with six individuals on a one-to-one basis, and also works in a group home which houses eight individuals. Dayne says, “It’s a challenging but incredibly rewarding career. I would encourage anyone who is interested in making a difference to the lives of others to look into disability support work.” If you are interested in volunteering, please feel free to be in touch with Dayne via LinkedIn.

Alessandra Ho (2017) Congratulations to Alessandra Ho (2017) who has been selected to represent Australia at the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games for Artistic Swimming.

Jack Connell (2017)

Congratulations to Jack Connell (2017) and Christian Rudd (2018) whose short film Steamed Dreams won the Audience Choice Award at the WA Made Film Festival on Saturday, 13 March 2021. The WA Made Film Festival is Western Australia’s biggest celebration of locally-made screen content and this year’s festival featured over 50 WA-made feature films, short films, documentaries and television episodes. Jack’s film, Steamed Dreams, follows the story of Harold Highclimber who is forced to re-enter the competitive world of extreme ironing after a social media rivalry takes hold. Jack looks forward to bringing his next film to life.

When Alessandra was 11, she attended a ‘come and try’ day for Artistic Swimming at her local pool. After her first session, she was

hooked and knew that this was the sport for her. Alessandra has been a part of the senior national squad since 2018, and was part of the team that qualified Australia for the Olympics at the 2019 World Championships in South Korea.

Jordan Korol (2012)

After graduating from the College, Jordan went on to study a seven-year medical degree at UWA. Currently working at Fiona Stanley Hospital, Jordan says it has been an interesting start to his medical career, with COVID-19 making it a year he will never forget. His goal is to become a paediatrician. When Jordan is not working, he can be found playing sports or volunteering for Fair Game Australia, a charity which delivers unique health and fitness programs

and recycled sports equipment to remote and under-serviced communities. Each year, he flies out to remote Aboriginal communities in WA for a week to donate sports equipment and escape the city. Jordan’s biggest recommendation to students finishing school is to get out and explore rural WA. Spending a year in Port Hedland enabled Jordan to experience unique challenges and adventures that allowed him to step out of his comfort zone and equip himself with a variety of skills that are invaluable for life.

16

Alex Gillies (2012) After leaving the College, Alex went on to study at an innovative program in Vancouver at Eaton Arrowsmith School, which supports young people with learning difficulties through different ways of learning. Having finished the program and benefited greatly from it, Alex

17

Dylan has been fortunate enough to be a part of two successful projects working for BHP and FMG on iron ore construction jobs. He mentions that it has been very satisfying to see these projects being completed (despite many challenges on the way) to deliver a product for the future of Australia’s economy. Away from work, Dylan likes to keep fit by playing football with the Curtin University Wesley Tigers as well as catching up with friends, many of whom he met in Year 8 at ASC.

James went straight from school to the University of Western Australia and studied a general double major of Anatomy / Human Biology and Geography before completing a Master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning. During his time at university, he completed a series of work experience placements, including at Element WA (formerly TPG), where he now works as a Senior Planning Consultant in their Statutory Planning (Approvals) team. Currently a senior project engineer at Clough, Adrian has had a varied and stimulating career path. He has been fortunate enough to travel the world in his career, visiting places such as Finland, the Philippines, Indonesia, China and Malaysia. One of his greatest career highlights was working in an offshore Wheatstone platform where he encountered an abundance of marine life such as whale sharks and humpback whales. Married for over 12 years to Mandy and with two young children (Charlotte and Dominic), Adrian always finds himself busy. When he manages to find a few spare minutes, he focuses on honing his new hobby of woodwork. Adrian still keeps in touch with various classmates and treasures the friendships he made at the College. He regularly sees Josh Soutar, Andrew Gray, Cameron Jones, Damon Wood, Peter Lane and Matthew Lyon. The group is excitedly anticipating Andrew Tyrrell’s return to WA after living in Colorado.
