OLD SAINTS ALL SAINTS’ COLLEGE
From the President Welcome to Issue 20 of Dovetails, our Old Saints’ magazine. The last six months have been a memorable and eventful time for the Old Saints. Heritage Week, which took place in May, was a tremendous success for the students. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, the annual Old Saints v Students Sporting Event was cancelled. You can read more about Heritage Week on page 4. I would like to thank the Old Saints and parents who attended this year’s Futures Expo. Students always appreciate hearing the Old Saints’ and parents’ honest comments and advice on their various career aspirations. The Old Saints are
1
delighted to support this event; it’s our way of helping to prepare our young people for the future of work and supporting them to reach their career goals. During the winter months, we hosted the 15, 25, 30 and 35 Year Reunions, with great turnouts of Old Saints at each event. Photos for the events can be found on pages 15–18 of this edition. On Friday, 5 November the College will celebrate its 40th anniversary. Our traditional Beers, Bubbles & Bites will be combined with this significant event. One way in which former students can give back to the community is by volunteering to serve on the Old Saints’ Committee. We meet four
times a year and strive to evolve and develop the Old Saints. We are always looking for more members to join the committee. If you would like further information, please email oldsaints@allsaints.wa.edu.au This bumper edition of Dovetails brings you news of your fellow Old Saints at reunions, personally and professionally, and how some have given back to the community. I hope you enjoy this edition of Dovetails and catching up on news of our alumni from the past six months.
Andrew Wilson (2010)
Ayla Woodland (2020) Ayla Woodland’s artwork is featured on the front cover of this edition of Dovetails. The artwork was Ayla’s first commission, and she was keen to take on the exciting challenge of painting birds for the first time. With a passion for art since a young age, Ayla knew she wanted to put it to good use and to share her skills with others. She was constantly practising sketching faces, figures and flowers. Ayla completed Visual Art as an ATAR subject, allowing her to turn her hobby into a meaningful way of expression, which could be shared with others. Ayla is motivated and inspired by making people’s loved ones (whether they be pets or people) come to life on a canvas. She mentioned that being able to produce sentimental paintings gives her immense joy as it is a meaningful gift that lasts forever. If you would like to commission a unique piece of artwork, please contact Ayla on aylawoodland@gmail.com or check out her Instagram @aylaspaintings

Mini
FUTURES 2021 EXPO It was wonderful to welcome Old Saints, College parents and representatives from universities, colleges and a diverse range of industries, as well as Rotary representatives and Old Saints, to the College earlier this year for the Year 10 myFuture Mini Futures Expo. The guests shared their knowledge and experience of their chosen careers with our Year 10 students, allowing them to learn more about career and post-school pathways by engaging with people from a variety of industries and institutions. Thanks to the Old Saint volunteers for their enthusiasm and passion when chatting with the students.

Heritage Week Heritage Week took place in the first week of May with a range of engaging activities and fun events to inform our students of the history of the College. During their time at the College, our students will achieve a deep understanding of our origin and our place in the community.
and to Durack for winning the Year 3 challenge, and to all students for their enthusiasm and team spirit.
The week kicked off with the Years 5 and 6 Buzzer Quiz, where students put their knowledge of the All Saints’ College timeline to the test in a fast-paced quiz, earning points for their House. Congratulations to Durack House for taking out the win!
Also on Thursday, Senior School students listened to an engaging presentation from Heritage Coordinator Mr John Beaverstock and former College Captains Scott Ritchie (1985) and Bruce Lee (1986) at Assembly.
The Years 3 and 4 students worked in their Houses to solve jigsaw puzzles as fast as possible in a team challenge. The catch? All puzzles were aerial photographs of the College from various years throughout our history. Well done to Stirling House for winning the Year 4 puzzle challenge
In an All Saints’ College tradition, two Sausage Sizzles took place, cooked and served by our Old Saints volunteers, giving generously of their time. Junior School students enjoyed theirs on Tuesday and Senior School students braved the cool weather to purchase one on Thursday.
Due to restrictions surrounding COVID-19 in WA at the time (in particular, the requirement of wearing masks indoors), the Old Saints v Students Sporting Event had to be cancelled. We thank all involved in making Heritage Week a rousing success, helping inspire current students to learn more about the rich history of the College.

Avanti Dantale (2020)
Natasha Luci (2020)
Old Saints from the Class of 2020, Avanti Dantale and Natasha Luci were welcomed back to the College this year to fill the Nexus and Marketing and Community Relations internships, respectively. The internship program furthers the partnership between the College and Old Saints community by encouraging active involvement of alumni in the day-to-day life of All Saints’. Avanti is studying a Bachelor of Commerce at The University of Western Australia (UWA), while Natasha is studying a Bachelor of Science, also at UWA. They both value the opportunity to gain work experience to complement their studies. We look forward to Avanti and Natasha’s valuable contribution to ASC throughout the year.

Celebrating 40 years of All Saints’ College All Saints’ College is nationally recognised as a pre-eminent provider of coeducation and was founded in 1981. Beginning with approximately 100 students in Years 7 and 8, Junior and Senior years were steadily added, and the College now enjoys a student population of more than 1 350 – from Pre-Kindergarten to Year 12. The College has been under the stewardship of five Principals: Dr Eric Speed (1979-1987); Mr Anthony London (1987-2000); Rev Peter Laurence (2001-2002); Dr Geoffrey Shaw (2003-2011); and Ms Belinda Provis, from May 2013 to the present. (Father Braden Short held the position of Acting Principal in 2012/2013.) All Saints’ is proud of its history and recognises with gratitude the contribution of previous generations of students, families and staff who have shaped the College and helped to position it as one of the nation’s finest. Former Staff Spotlight Kent Williams In each edition, we catch up with one of our former staff members to allow the community to get to know the remarkable teachers they had at the College. In this edition, we conducted a Q&A with Kent Williams. 1
HOW LONG WERE YOU A STAFF MEMBER AT THE COLLEGE? I began at the College in 1990 and taught for over 23 years before retiring.
2
WHAT POSITIONS DID YOU HOLD AT THE COLLEGE? I had multiple positions at the College including Head of Science, Year 12 Retreat Coordinator and Staff President. I also taught classes in the Junior School and worked as part of an interdisciplinary team between Design and Technology and Science.
9
I was one of two staff members who supported students in the Environmental Group who undertook local and country rehabilitation projects. When the Bush Court (now The Common) was removed, over 20 tonnes of mulch was produced, and we were allowed to use 10 tonnes to scatter down at the Bull Creek and spread around what is now the Indoor Sports Centre. We then applied for a grant from Bunnings to build a shade house where we germinated, planted and cared for the local species. I kept five beehives and sold over 80kg of honey a year and used the money to pay for equipment and projects in the Science department. I was also part of a team of Science teachers who ran Saturday programs with guest speakers and challenges that included topics such as aviation and robotics, which weren’t in the curriculum at the time.
3
WHAT IS YOUR FONDEST MEMORY OF THE COLLEGE? Apart from teaching and learning alongside some wonderful staff and students, one of my fondest memories
was sitting with Year 12 students sharing appreciations and regrets at the end of the Year 12 Retreat. I enjoyed talking with Year 12 students in small groups in an activity called ‘the empty chair’. Certain teaching experiences created fond memories. For example, teaching Science to a Year 10 class using the Kagan method that my wife (a Year 1 teacher) introduced me to. One aspect of working at ASC was the great camaraderie I shared with other staff. During my time at ASC, I learnt abseiling, basic robotics, web-page design and expanded my spreadsheet skills – I believe good teachers keep learning from others.
4
WHAT HAVE YOU DONE SINCE RETIRING? After retiring, my wife and I got the travel bug! We travelled through Europe and America before returning to Australia. We have travelled to places such as the Kimberley, Coral Bay, Exmouth, Esperance, Kalgan River and Kangaroo Island in our caravan. I also volunteered to care for native animals and started researching family trees.
Old Saints’ Service & Endeavour Award Jack Connell (2017) is the latest Old Saint to be granted the Old Saints’ Service & Endeavour Award. After graduating from All Saints’, Jack went on to study a Bachelor of Media and Communications at Edith Cowan University, majoring in Film and Video and minoring in Advertising. His upcoming movie Hitting the Road is a 20-minute getaway driver-inspired short film brought to life by a young group of emerging filmmakers with ties to the Old Saints. Jack is passionate about making a positive difference in the film industry by affording young creators opportunities to work on a live set and valuing diverse representation on and off screen.
intern at ABC Studios on The Heights TV show and writing and directing his own films, such as Steamed Dreams and The Queen’s Gambit. His short film Steamed Dreams was selected for the 2020 Portland Comedy Film Festival and he won Best Mockumentary at the Houston Comedy Film Festival. He was also a Finalist at the Australian Independent Film Festival and his ANZ Commercial Franz with Benefits won the IAA ‘BIG IDEA’ Competition for 2020.
A filmmaker who is enthusiastic about all aspects of the process, Jack and his crew will be conducting press tours across WA schools to inspire students to embrace their creativity. During his career, Jack has been involved with a variety of Australian productions, including being an actor in the recent movie GO Karts, a camera

Where
are they now?
Sharon Tee (1990)
After graduating from ASC in 1990 and studying a Bachelor of Arts in Politics and English and Comparative Literature, and a Graduate Diploma in Secondary Education at Murdoch University, Sharon moved to London with her now-husband Jerom. While the plan was to stay for just a year, it quickly became fourand-a-half years, as they made the most of the work and travel opportunities London offered (and caught up with fellow Old Saints during their travels). On leaving London with her husband, Sharon moved to Melbourne where she worked for
11
a production company before returning to Perth and a teaching career. After her first child, Isaac, was born, Sharon’s passion turned to launching her own baby food business, running it successfully for six years. After growing their family with two more sons, Sharon transitioned to work in governance for a charity before moving to her current job as Beneficiary and Functions Manager at another charity organisation. With three young children, Sharon often bumps into other Old Saints at various sporting games and social events, as well as at Reunions and via the power of social media!
Adam Worthington (2000)
Unsure of what path he wanted to take after graduating ASC in 2000, Adam has built a successful career in finance, completing an accounting degree and subsequent Graduate Program with Ernst & Young. His career has taken him all over the world, including living in London and New York City. While Adam and his wife, Saskia, enjoyed living in New York City, they moved back to Perth after Saskia fell pregnant with their first child. Currently working as the Finance Manager – Asia Pacific for a global mining technology company, Adam is appreciative that his work affords him the opportunity to continue to travel the world, having taken him across South America, Asia and New Zealand. Adam’s greatest achievement is his family (his wife and three children, Hudson, Darcy and Edie), closely followed by captaining O’Connor to winning the Interhouse Swimming Carnival in 2000! Still in contact with many of his friends from ASC, Adam regularly plays golf with fellow Old Saints and loves catching up with them.
Matthew Stidolph (2015)
Taylor Gartner (2012)
Since leaving ASC, Taylor’s career path has taken many turns over the past decade. During a gap year she found a passion for health while working as a medical receptionist, and proceeded to study Speech Pathology at Curtin University. She now works as a private paediatric Speech Pathologist as well as a Clinical Educator for the Periods, Pain and Endometriosis Program (PPEP). Taylor’s work in this space arose from her personal experience with endometriosis and sees her travelling around WA, providing an educative talk to high school students. Taylor sees her role in providing important health education and speech pathology intervention to young people (many of whom experience barriers in accessing care) as her greatest achievement. When not working, Taylor loves to travel and explore the natural environment right on WA’s doorstep. Getaways that involve outdoor adventures and activities, such as trips to the Kimberley, are her favourite.
Matt currently works as a Systems Engineer in the Infrastructure Services team at Zetta group, an IT Managed Service Provider supporting Western Australian clients. He previously worked at Kinetic IT, which was contracted to the Department of Education where he assisted all public schools in WA transitioning to NAPLAN online. Through his work,
Matt has been able to travel to places such as Bunbury, Broome, Busselton, Dampier, Esperance and Narrogin. On his days off, Matt can be found exploring the bars and restaurants Western Australia has to offer! He keeps in touch with many Old Saints, including Sean Ayres, and each time they catch up they try a new bar, restaurant or coffee shop.
Sean Ayres (2015)
After graduating from ASC, Sean imagined his career to be a relatively standard one: go to university and study law, then get a job. However, when other opportunities arose at university, Sean grabbed them with both hands! In 2019, Sean ran for the City of Melville Council elections. Although he wasn’t successful in his campaign, he says it was a great learning experience that taught him many skills that he uses today. Studying Law at Murdoch University, Sean was presented with a variety
of opportunities, including being involved in student politics and the student magazine called The Murdoch Review. The magazine included a selection of university news, commentary and comedy on regular A4 pieces of paper that are folded into hand-sized copies and handed out on campus. When not working, Sean can be found hitting the gym or playing social indoor beach volleyball. He enjoys cooking meals from scratch, such as curries and notes he has been in a long campaign (with himself) to cook the perfect steak!

Tessa Redman (2017) Danii Paterson (1993) Performing at a world-renowned Arts festival can now be checked off Tessa Redman’s (2017) bucket list, after she created and performed her solo work I’m Not Going to Lie to You at the New Zealand Fringe Festival in March this year. New Zealand’s largest, annual Arts festival features over 1 000 artists from around New Zealand, and the world, and highlights all forms of contemporary art.
Embracing the harmony and connection that often exists between siblings, Tessa brought her brother Tyler (2019) on board to create the soundtrack for the work. The creative gene runs deep in the Redman family, as Tyler is currently studying Acting at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts and has been experimenting with sound creation over the past two years. Tessa and Tyler hope to work together on future creations.
Tessa’s engaging and original dance work explored the contrast between people’s invisible inner turmoil and the visible physical body. Interested in the nature of people’s desires, vulnerabilities and impulses, Tessa aimed to present an honest and heartfelt investigation into the intricacies of human emotion.
After graduating from ASC, Tessa moved to Wellington to study at the New Zealand School of Dance and since 2019 has worked as a freelance performance artist. Always seeking to challenge herself and create well-rounded work, she has conducted research into socio-cultural issues, such as gender politics, as well as diverse performance genres and technical aspects of performance. Although she has taken part in the New Zealand Fringe Festival for the past three years, I’m Not Going to Lie to You was Tessa’s first self-devised work, striving towards her ultimate aim: to spread the magic of movement!
An emerging freelance performer, Tessa has spent the past several years experimenting with her performance and choreographic style. She embraced the opportunity to create a work that blended the genres of dance, improvisation and theatre with aspects of clowning. Through this, the audience was treated to a unique and vulnerable performance.

After Danii graduated from ASC, she went on to study Commerce for a year before transferring to Nursing, ultimately finding her way into Podiatry. She worked as a Podiatrist in country WA before moving to Newcastle, NSW, where she developed a High Risk Foot Clinic into a large department. Wanting a change, Danii moved back to Perth and was part of the first Medicine cohort at Notre Dame in 2005. As a result, she currently works as an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, and is completing a subspecialty training in Urogynaecology at King Edward Memorial Hospital and St John of God Murdoch. Danii’s passions range from watching her kids play sports to making attempts at completing the Rottnest Swim in a team with her husband! Danii is still in touch with her old classmates, including Claire Stone (1993), Josh Hayes (1993), James Eldridge, Selina Horrocks (née Bellinger) and Merridee Abbott (1992).
Where
are they now?
Jordanna Peterson (2015)
After leaving ASC, Jordanna went on to study a double degree in Law and Business, majoring in Accounting at Murdoch University. She was lucky enough to land her dream job as a graduate at PriceWaterhouse Coopers, working in corporate tax and tax litigation. Jordanna is always up for a challenge and says ‘yes’ to every opportunity that is presented to her. She mentions this as being one of her greatest achievements, along with always working hard with the highest level of integrity. In her spare time, Jordanna enjoys camping and travelling and, most recently, ice skating. Jordanna, Zelma Snyman and Emerson Day (also from the class of 2015) decided to enrol in a year’s worth of ice-skating lessons. The girls mention it has been great to try something out of their comfort zones in a sport that is extremely challenging.
Miranda Templeman (2020)
Congratulations to Miranda who has been selected to play as goalkeeper in the Adelaide United W-League. At the beginning of 2021, Miranda moved to Sydney where she took part in the Future Matildas Program. The program provides exposure to women’s league club coaches, with several exhibition matches held throughout the year, where they can view training footage. Previously, Miranda has been part of the Junior Matildas National Team and had the opportunity to travel to the Pacific where they played matches against Tonga, Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands. Miranda has been playing soccer for over eight years and has specialised in being a goalkeeper
for six of those years. She started playing soccer at school and knew this immediately felt different to any other sport she had played. The following day, Miranda joined the Melville City Football Club. While training full time with Adelaide United, Miranda is also a full time student, studying a bachelor’s degree in Sports and Exercise Science at the University of Technology Sydney. You can watch an interview of Miranda below talking about her love for the sport. Thanks to @goldleafcreative for providing this video.

Hayley Johnson (née Hope 2006)
Casey Graham (née Hogue 2011) Casey and Josh started dating eight years ago when they first met working together at IGA in Leeming. They tied the knot on Sunday, 6 June 2021 at the Brookleigh Estate in the Swan Valley surrounded by 65 guests, including Old Saints Charlotte Willing (Maid of Honour), Rachel Richardson and Monica Crosetta (all from the Class of 2011).
21
It was a beautiful autumn day when Hayley and Ben Hope tied the knot on Saturday, 20 March 2021. Hayley and Ben exchanged vows at Eagle Bay Beach, before celebrating with 140 guests at the reception at Eagle Bay Brewing Co. The Old Saint guests included Kendall Hope (Maid of Honour and sister, 2007), Peter Dolzadelli (MC at the wedding), Sam Backshall, Cody Rummer, Kate Bawden, Ashleigh Dewar, Pip Lambert, Amy Seth, Shannon Hoad, Jasmine Duthie, Anne Heath, Beau Kenton and William Hulmes. Hayley and Ben have been together for over eight years. They first met in Year 1 at Winthrop Primary School. Ben proposed on their sixth anniversary at Cottesloe beach. Due to COVID, they had to cancel their honeymoon in the Maldives, but wandered out yonder and explored Broome instead.
Megan Cotterell (née Smith 2006) On Friday, 22 January 2021 Megan and Andrew were married in the Canadian Rockies in Alberta, Canada. It was a chilly 25 degrees farenheit! Originally planning for their wedding to be in Perth in 2020, COVID decided it had other plans. The couple decided to elope in the mountains of Canmore, Alberta. The theme of the wedding was a reflection of their outdoor lifestyle. After the ceremony, Megan and Andrew had some photos taken on a frozen lake and then got into their ski gear and headed up to an alpine lake, where they enjoyed their delicious wedding cake, as well as cocktails from a local distillery.
OLD SAINTS’ WALK At All Saints’ College, we believe that by honouring those who have come before us, we can better develop a deep appreciation of where we are today, and thus effectively shape our College’s future direction. This process of acknowledgment reminds us that as the current custodians of the College, we owe our today to the yesterday of others. All Saints’ College is proud to be making its heritage more visible by creating the Old Saints’ Walk which provides the opportunity for alumni and families to recognise and celebrate their time at the College. The first batch of bricks for 2021 is open for purchase now, with bricks laid during the Winter holidays.
