From the Old Saints’ President It has been a delight to see the Old Saints community grow and evolve during 2018, and this is due in large part to the valuable support of the College, both financially and in principle, and the hard work of our dedicated Committee. We now have a large and dynamic young committee, and I hope you will enjoy this edition of Dovetails and reading about what inspires us to give back to the community. All Old Saints are welcome to be part of the team; please feel free to come to one of our meetings (we meet four times a year) or volunteer at any of the events we are involved in. Don’t forget to register for this year’s Futures Expo on Monday, 10 June, 6.30pm– 8.30pm. We are proud of the dedication and commitment our Old Saints have to supporting this annual event. Last year the outstanding number of 32 Old Saints volunteered their time to speak with the Year 10 students about their possible career paths. Students always value the opportunity to engage with Old Saints at this event, and we hope many of you will join us again this year. Heritage Week is on our doorstep, with an array of activities happening across campus. A highlight of the week is the annual Old Saints vs Students Sport Competition, so if you play soccer, basketball or netball, please sign up and enjoy taking the students on! Full details on page XXXX This bumper edition of Dovetails brings you news of your fellow Old Saints at reunions, personally, professionally and how some have given back to the community. Please share what you are up to now by contacting Alumni Officer, Mary Thornton: mary.thornton@allsaints.wa.edu.au.

All Saints’ College Futures Expo 2019

Welcome to the Class of 2018

Monday, 10 June 2019 | 6.30pm - 8.30pm OLD SAINTS – WE NEED YOU! The annual Futures Expo will be held on Monday, 10 June 2019 between 6.30pm and 8.30pm and we are looking for Old Saints to chat with the ASC students about their personal career paths since leaving the College. Current students always comment on how rewarding it is to chat to Old Saints who provide honest, down-to-earth facts about their various careers – not just the ultimate rewards, but the joys, pitfalls and diversions they may have encountered along their career journey. Come along and enjoy our hospitality while you meet and chat with current ASC students from Years 8 to 12, and their parents. (It is compulsory for all Year 10 students to attend). The knowledge Old Saints share is invaluable, and we encourage you to participate in this key event. All Old Saints who volunteer their time at the Futures Expo will be offered a light dinner on arrival and free baristamade coffee over the two-hour event (please be in the Indoor Sports Centre by 5.45pm for dinner). Your valuable contribution can be for as long as you wish, and there is no obligation to stay for the entire duration of the Expo. If you can volunteer your time please register: http://oldsaints.ascollege.wa.edu.au/FuturesExpo2019 For further information, please email Futures’ Facilitator, Ms Grace Itzstein: Grace.Itzstein@allsaints.wa.edu.au

The Former Students' Association officially welcomed the Class of 2018 into the Old Saints' community with a BBQ at the College on one of their final lunchtimes together. The Year 12s received a warm welcome from Mark Balding (1988) who spoke to them about the importance of remaining connected with the College and presented them each with an Old Saints’ business card holder.

These artworks included their handprints and what they wanted to do after leaving ASC. Those who joined the College after Year 7 had an opportunity to add their handprint. Congratulations to our youngest Old Saint, 2018 College Dux, Aron Thian, who achieved a ‘perfect score’ ATAR of 99.95 and is only 16 years of age.

the students also loved seeing the canvases they had created during the Transition 7 event five years ago. DOVETAILS VOLUME 15 | APRIL 2019

Old Saints’

give back

Sara David (née Lindegger, 1987) Imagine trying to save the life of a woman bleeding to death after giving birth to her baby with no lights, no power and malaria-laden mosquitoes buzzing around your head torch?

The solar suitcases are on their way to Papua New Guinea from the USA, and we look forward to giving you an update on the impact this solar power device is going to have on Sr Linda’s capacity to provide quality care to mothers and babies, and save many lives.

This was the reality for midwife Sr Linda Tano earlier this year. She lives and works in a small riverside town on the banks of the Sepik River in remote Papua New Guinea called Angoram. Living Child Inc. has been instrumental in getting her transferred to this place to begin setting up maternity services for women living in very remote villages along many tributaries and waterways. There have been no functioning health services in this area for over 15 years. Women were giving birth in their villages on dirt floors with inadequate clean water and no skilled supervision. Many mothers died during childbirth.

To learn more, visit: livingchildinc.org.au

Sr Linda’s maternity unit sits above the ground so that when the Sepik River floods in season, the ward stays dry. Before she arrived, women, if they got to the Health Centre, were relegated to a disused laundry to give birth on the cold concrete floor. Many women and babies died in this place. Now, with the help and support of Living Child, Sr Linda has opened the labour ward, and it has new medical equipment such as delivery beds, trolleys, cots for newborns and stainless-steel instruments. Women know that there is a kind midwife in Angoram, and they are coming from faraway places to give birth supervised by a skilled midwife. But lighting has been a problem, with power unreliable due to issues with providing fuel for generators. That is until now, because through the Old Saints’ Service & Endeavour Award given to Living Child Founder Sara David, two Solar Care suitcases have been purchased for installation at the Health Centre to provide back-up power for lighting, mobile phone charging and a baby heartbeat monitor – always fully charged and ready for use in an emergency. 9

The Old Saints’ Service & Endeavour Award One of the main Old Saints’ achievements in 2018 was the inauguration of the Old Saints’ Service & Endeavour Award which was awarded to Sara David (née Lindegger – 1987) for Living Child Inc. Old Saints who express an interest to engage in charity work in Australia or overseas are invited to apply for a grant up to $5 000 to assist in their extraordinary endeavours. The annual discretionary amount is up to $5 000 per recipient with a maximum of $15 000 awarded in any year. All recipients of the Old Saints’ Service and Endeavour Award are required to return to the College following their expedition or project to make a presentation to staff and students on their experience and the outcomes achieved. They must also write an article and supply photographs for the Old Saints’ publication, Dovetails. Applicants must adhere to strict criteria and their proposal must align with the College’s service program by giving back to the community. For further details about the Old Saints’ Service & Endeavour Award, please contact Mrs Mary Thornton, Alumni Officer: mary.thornton@allsaints.wa.edu.au

Ryan Garvey Congratulations to Ryan Garvey (2018) on being awarded the 2019 Youth Citizen of the Year by the City of Melville on Australia Day. (Photo: Gary Peters) We are delighted this is the second consecutive year an ASC student has won this award, with Steven Thiele (2018) the deserving recipient last year. At All Saints’ we understand finding work once you have left the school isn’t always easy and are proud to support former students in any way we can. Wanju Café, located in the College’s Centre for Performing Arts foyer, asked for Old Saint volunteers to assist in the café and in return received free barista training. They had a marvellous response and it is lovely to see many stay on in a volunteer capacity after they received their training.

Pip O’Meara (née Lambert, 2006) Pip and her husband Ben spent the last few years managing an orphanage in South Sudan and planned to be there long-term; however, safety concerns cut that short. They returned to Perth with the aim of raising money to help those in need. Having both been involved in high-level sport, training and rehabilitation, they have established a not-for-profit strength and conditioning gym to raise money for charity. Power to Empower caters for professional athletes, power lifters, body builders and is also set up for those wanting to keep in shape and be strong and healthy. As a member of Power to Empower, you can support others just by going to the gym! Profits go to their chosen charity, Initiate. Not only will your membership fee support those in need, but you have the opportunity to be hands-on in charity by helping with clothes drives, fundraising events and mentoring. Ben is at the gym 14 hours a day, seven days a week, and hasn’t taken a wage from the gym. They are supported by Pip’s income as a physiotherapist and, when she is not working, she is at the gym supporting Ben. Hopefully, it won’t be too long till Ben can take a small wage, but the couple are passionate about keeping that minimal to allow most of the money to go back into charity. Their motto is ‘Strength Gains for World Change’ – this is one gym worth joining! For more information, please visit:powertoempower.org.au

Where are they now? James Callaghan (2000)

Tegan Johns

James’s life since he left ASC has been a non-stop action, emotionfilled journey which now sees him working as a successful International Executive Protection and Celebrity Bodyguard to the rich and famous.

From recently moving to the Wheatbelt to live with Ed, a handsome farmer, to attending international World Film premiers, Tegan’s life is never dull!

After servicing as a Paratrooper in the 3rd Battalion Royal Australian Regiment, James saw active service in East Timor in 2006 and left the army due to complications from parachuting injuries. He took his particular skill-set into the civilian environment and focused on protection and security – both government and civil. Life took a downward spiral in 2013 when James lost his identical twin brother Stuart due to a tragic accident. He felt like a singular being, instead of two parts that make a whole, but five years later he has emerged a stronger person. “The minute you stand back and stop expecting to receive, and instead start giving back to the world, you will be forever amazed at the open-hearted nature and enduring spirit of the human race.” James said. Time doesn’t stand still for James though. He loves his jet set career which allows him the opportunity to travel and work for a variety of international stars, on some of the biggest musicals and concerts. If he is not travelling, you will find James skateboarding or taking photos around Bondi Beach, where he and his girlfriend live. If life isn’t busy enough already, James is also currently building a bar in Bondi! It is due to open at the end of April – follow Instagram: Isabel.bondi for more information. One thing is for sure: James will succeed in whatever challenge faces him.

DOVETAILS VOLUME 15 | APRIL 2019

Tegan has worked for 20 years in the film industry and is currently the WA Publicity Manger for Universal Pictures. Her career has afforded her the pleasure of international travel to press junkets, attending film premieres and working with many talented film makers and actors to put their films in the spotlight. “The magic of film will never change; the gamut of emotions it can evoke is so powerful and relatable. The challenge is finding new and creative ways to bring film to people in a noisy environment. Fortunately, we’re showing more diverse content than ever before and delivering it in exciting new mediums,” Tegan said. Having moved to the Wheatbelt to be with Ed, a grain and sheep farmer, Tegan is learning to balance her life between red carpets and red dirt! One minute fine tuning her cooking skills to show the CWA ladies what she has learned; the next marketing a range of world-class films; from Oscar winners through popcorn-pleasing Blockbusters to cult Indie classics in the making. “I’m really lucky in that I’ve always worked from home, so I’ve just taken my job with me. I truly have the best of both worlds and get to work alongside an international movie star one day and in the sheep yards (trying my best to be helpful) the next.” Tegan said.

Blythe (née Carter, ) and Simone Carter ()

Erin Harvey (née Kerr, On completing a Bachelor of Arts in Dance at WAAPA, Erin started EK Dance Academy in 2008 when she bought the Linda Benbow Academy of Dance from the teacher she had had since she was 5 years old. Over the last 11 years Erin’s academy has developed and evolved, with homes in Brentwood Scout Hall, John Paul Centre in Willetton, All Saints’ College and, this year, a wonderful new purpose-built private studio in Willetton. There is something on offer for all ages, with classes including Jazz, Tap, Ballet, Contemporary, Hip Hop, Acrobatics. This year has also seen the introduction of Silver Swans Ballet for Adults, Adult Jazz/Hip Hop,

specific Pointe classes for students in Ballet and Dance To Your Own Tune, which is creative movement for 18 months upwards. Having grown from 119 students to more than 280, EK Dance Academy is now a St John Ambulance First Aid Safe organisation with a defibrillator, and students can buy EK Dance Wear and Accessories. All students participate in full-scale end of year concerts and can also participate in community events, including dancing at nursing homes. Regular workshops are run with well-known artists such as Australian actress, Rachael Beck.

After many years of travelling the world and living overseas, the dynamic duo of Simone, aka 'Mimmy', and Blythe, affectionately known as 'Bub', returned to Perth and launched mbcollective. Committed to reducing plastic and doing their bit for the war on waste, Blythe and Simone have designed a luxe collection of market totes to complement an environmentally conscious lifestyle. Each bag is carefully crafted from the finest jute and luxe leather, materials which have been sourced and handpicked for their

longevity. Each bag is a limited edition and is individually numbered. Drawing on Simone’s interior design skills, which can be recognised in some of the world’s leading luxury hotels, coupled with Blythe’s role as an advocate for healthy and sustainable living and a mother juggling four young children, the pair were delighted to return to ASC for Pasar Malam. Visit www.mbcollective.com.au for more information.

What does Erin do when she isn’t at the academy? One thing is for sure: she doesn’t let the grass grow under her feet! She also teaches Dance at ASC and in her spare time looks after her two stepsons, husband, dog, two rabbits, two Tarantulas and a Huntsman, or can be seen at the beach or on a sports motorbike!

Deep Mind is devoted exclusively to the advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI). She is a program manager and works with Research Engineers and Software Developers at the forefront of Artificial Intelligence research and the applications of AI in the real world. Courtney recently spent two weeks at Google’s Head Office in Silicon Valley, where she caught up with Old Saint members, David Gow, a software engineer at Google, California and Vasilli Hatzis, who words at Goldman Sachs in San Francisco. Mark Stapleton

Mark is in his final year of a 43-year teaching career. He is a much-loved Foundation teacher at ASC for 19 years and comes to many Old Saint reunions. DOVETAILS VOLUME 15 | APRIL 2019

Philipa Seth (2011) Philipa Seth’s dreams came true in October 2018 when she was drafted at pick No 27 for the Fremantle Dockers. Philipa’s passion for Football started when she was 13 years old and then ASC Senior School Sports Coordinator Oliver Beath (later Head of Health and Physical Education and now Year 11–13 Coordinator)encouraged her to ‘give it a go’. There was no AFLW then, so the highest level she could reach was representing the state. In 2017 the AFLW rules changed, and so did her life. Working full time as a Physiotherapist did not deter from her passion to succeed in the Football world, and last year she reaped the rewards when her name was announced in the draft pick. The hard work then really started, training five or six times a week whilst still trying to balance her role in private physiotherapy. From running sprints out on the track to 2km time trials to 1 rep max testing in the gym – she had never been so sore or so physically fit. Nerves set in waiting for team selection for Round 1 and nearly everyone was available for selection. Before she knew it, she was on a plane to Melbourne for her first AFLW game. “I now have six AFLW games under my belt. Stepping up to the AFLW has been even better than I could have imagined, and the professionalism surrounding the girls, staff and club is nothing short of astonishing.” Philipa said.

Philipa Seth (2015) Jordanna couldn’t believe her eyes when she walked into a classroom at Beers, Bubbles & Bites, in November, to see the cardboard cut-out of Malcolm Turnbull she had taken to her Politics and Legal Studies class in 2014. After a Wildcats game, Jordanna felt it would be useful to depart with two promotional cut-outs of Malcolm Turnbull and Tony Abbott to enhance Mr Tim Brown’s room. These stayed up during the General Election and she didn’t expect to ever see them again! Jordanna (standing in photo on the left and kneeling in photo on the right) is studying Law and Accounting at Murdoch University.

We wish Philipa continued success and will watch her progress avidly.

Tori Vidler (2012) Tori’s passion in life is paddling for Hurricane Dragon boating and Outrigger Canoe club in East Fremantle, where she is a Team Manager and the Vice President for WAZA, the WA Zone of the Australian Outrigger Canoe Racing Association (AOCRA) and is the governing body for the sport of outrigger canoe paddling and racing in Western Australia. Regularly representing the Hurricane Dragon’s and other WA clubs, both nationally and internationally, Tori competed in the Singapore Ocean Cup last year and the Sydney Harbour Challenge in February. She is now hoping to train as a coach. Tori now works as a Life Raft Technician and enjoys woodworking when she gets the chance. “If I had spare time, I’d like to get back into making furniture because that’s what I love’, Tori said.
