Old Saints return to All Saints’ for Beer, Bubbles & Bites 2016 Beer, Bubbles & Bites is the annual event where Old Saints and long-standing staff members are invited back to the College to network, socialise and enjoy good music and a moonlight tour of the campus.
From the Old Saints’ President The Old Saints continue to grow and develop and we are delighted to see many new members join the Old Saints’ Committee in 2017. It is a pleasure to be part of such a committed body of former students who enjoy giving back to the community and volunteering their time to events and developing new ideas. The Committee meets four times a year and all new members are most welcome. The Old Saints’ Dunk Tank returned to this year’s Pasar Malam twilight market and it was a great fundraising success with over $600 raised for the Ethan Davies Fellowship for research in paediatric brain cancer. The Old Saints are proud to support charities that have been established by former students, and are keen to hear from anyone involved in such endeavours. This year we hope even more Old Saints will volunteer a couple of hours

to chat to the Year 10 students at the newly-named Futures Expo (formerly Careers Expo) about the paths their careers have taken. Full details can be found on the inside back cover. Grace Itzstein, Futures’ Facilitator, welcomes Old Saints from every walk of life whether you have a degree, are an entrepreneur, skilled labourer or have succeeded in your chosen career without any formal qualifications, to come along and share your career insights.
On Saturday, 29 October 2016, it was ‘Back to All Saints’ for Old Saints’! Over 150 people attended the free event and enjoyed viewing the new College facilities and the Art, Design & Technologies’ Exhibition over a glass of bubbles and live jazz from Old Saints Liam Hickey (2011) on drums, Vaughan Jameson (2010) on guitar and Matthew McGlynn (2009) on trumpet. The delicious aroma of paella wafted through the night air while guests mingled. There was a battle to determine the largest cohort attending with 14 registering from the Class of 2009 and 15 from the Class of 2015. A headcount was taken at 8.30pm and the Class of 2015 was declared the winner.
Does the College have your current contact details? Your cohort has a reunion every five years and we thank the Alumni & Promotions Officer, Mary Thornton, for her commitment to coordinate these events. Don’t miss out on news of your reunion – update your details today by emailing: mary.thornton@allsaints.wa.edu.au Sian Angel (née Morgan, 2002)

All Saints’ is fortunate to have Adam regularly run Drama workshops as part of The HotHouse Company.
Nic and Old Saint, Emma Haines (2016), caught up while she was on a recent holiday in London.

Thirteen Old Saints from the Class of 2015 came together and raised $1 968.87 from a fundraising dinner and movie night, as well as other donations.
The quality of the music from the 10 musicians was outstanding and all profits went to The Water Project, a charity that builds wells to provide African communities with fresh water. Cam is studying Mathematics and Computer Science at UWA and is an active member of the Old Saints’ Committee.
Adrienne Wright (née Hartley) and Rachel Beck (née Armstrong, 1986) Adrienne and Rachel became friends in Year 8 and when Rachel left in Year 10 they kept their friendship alive for over 35 years, even though Rachel now lives in South Australia.
Ben Anderson, Shannae Carnell, Megan Franey, Nathan Holbrook, Cassie Manifold, Heather Kostiw-McFarlane, Rohan Musgrave, Matt Stidolph, Hannah Thomter, Euan Tyler, Lily Tyler, Asriel Yap and Mike Xu formed the aptly-named team Relay of Thrones and spent 24 hours
ensuring the baton never left the track. Nathan Holbrook won a medal for the most laps completed by a male after finishing a staggering 315 laps/85km. “Relay For Life was a very grounding event. For someone with little experience of the pain that cancer can cause, it was a real eye opener. It was amazing to see so many people taking part and supporting the cause. I look forward to participating next year, and many more to come.” Rohan said. “I’ve been a part of Relay For Life twice before and I thought that organising a team would not only be a great way to support a cause I’m very passionate about, but also a lovely way to spend time with my friends.” Shannae said.
Harmony Cup Champ: Tim Schibli (2007) In April, Tim was honoured to represent Switzerland playing Australian Rules Football in the Harmony Cup in Melbourne.
Harmony and two-time defending champions, Ireland, by one-point! Therefore, we won the Harmony Plate (2nd division) to the surprise of many,” Tim said.
The aim of the Harmony Cup is to celebrate Australia’s ethnic diversity and harmony, and to use the power of sport to break down cultural and ethnic barriers. We may come from many different backgrounds but we are all Australians.
Tim is moving indefinitely to Singapore to continue his work in marketing for a web company, but will be back in Australia for next year’s Harmony Cup!
“The team met each other for the first time on the Saturday and a strong bond quickly formed thanks to our shared Swiss heritage and love of footy. By Sunday night we were undefeated over three games, beating Chile, Team

Australia’s largest brands such as Carlton Draught, Meadow Lea, Greenseas, Edgell and Heinz. Before joining APAL, Craig worked in trade development as Operations Manager at Fairtrade Australia. From riding pushbikes through Cambodia, helicopters in Monaco, helping cocoa farmers in Indonesia, watching Cathy Freeman at the 2000 Olympics and David Bowie in Berlin, Craig is a self-proclaimed ‘slightly above average’ student who has proved there are different pathways to success, as long as you start with a great education. He now resides in Melbourne where he has lived for the past 15 years, but still calls WA (Melville) his spiritual home.
Gareth is one of Western Australia’s leading journalists, broadcasters and commentators.
Congratulations to Albert and Rebecca on graduating after six years of studying medicine.
Gareth left The West Australian newspaper in January (where he worked for the past 13 years) to join 6PR hosting the Morning Show from 8.30am, Monday to Friday. Gareth started as a cadet at The West covering local government, worked for two years heading the paper’s Melbourne bureau, was deputy online editor, and then covered WA politics for six and a half years – the past four as state political editor.
They also graduated alongside Rebecca McCracken (2008) and all three are now working at Fiona Stanley Hospital with a number of other Old Saints. They represent the final year of the MBBS before UWA changed their courses to post-graduate.
He lives in Bayswater with his wife Elizabeth and Labrador puppy, Charlie.

Briana obtained her private pilot’s licence following her 16th birthday in 2012. On leaving ASC, Briana studied three semesters in Mechanical Engineering at Curtin University before being accepted into the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities’ College of Science and Engineering.
Moving into the Aerospace upperdivision program just last year, Briana has already received a department scholarship, and has been accepted into several National Honor Societies for her academic performance. Apart from her classes, she enjoys teaching two university courses as an undergraduate teaching assistant – Environmental Biology, and Introductory Flight Mechanics. Briana says it’s hard to say where she sees herself in five years, but that her dream job lies in aircraft design with a company such as Boeing or Lockheed Martin, or collaborating on an Environmental Science/Aerospace project with NASA.

It is not often that the whole of the front page of The West Australian newspaper is a full sized photo of two Old Saints with their new son! Nina and Adam Tassell made headline news when they welcomed their new son, Judah, into the world on Australia Day – he weighed a massive 5.95kg. Chiropractor, Adam, delivered their baby in the front foyer of their Applecross home after a frantic, one-hour labour. Judah (or Jude for short) is still a big boy, mostly wearing Size 0 (6-12 months) clothes and is adored by his three brothers, Jackson (6), Lucas (4) and Nathan (2).

During his teenage years at All Saints’ College, Matthew developed strong friendships. He will be remembered from his school days as someone who was prepared to take every opportunity available, for his trumpet solos that stole the stage and for being the powerhouse in the rowing boat. In Year 12, he was Forrest House Captain, gained six College Colours and was awarded the ASC Music prize in recognition of his contribution to Music at ASC. Following high school, Matthew leapt into his engineering studies at Curtin University, with a sharp mind and a vehement drive. He graduated with a double degree in Chemical Engineering and Metallurgy. He thoroughly enjoyed being involved in the university’s vibrant Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) community and represented them internationally in the world mining games. He was settled into his job at Newmont Mining Corporation, (experiencing Tanami and Boddington mine sites) and was a valued member of the mine emergency response team. Matthew told his

brother on New Year’s Eve that he was glad to now have more time on his hands to pursue the things he loved to do, including exploring his love of fine food and wine.
Chisela Kanchela (2006) 1987 – 2016
Past students are invited to attend this year’s Futures Expo to share their personal career paths since leaving the College.
On his family’s first visit to London when Matthew was 12, they visited Harrods food hall to buy some items for dinner. Matthew selected pigeon, squab, pheasant and other exotic game and had immense satisfaction sampling them. On return from a College Service Trip to Vietnam in Year 8, Matthew’s first comment was that he had sampled snake and cricket, but was not allowed to try dog.
Chisela had an adventurous spirit and was a leader in the world of swimming.
Come along and enjoy our hospitality while you meet and chat with current ASC students from Years 8 to 13, and their parents. The knowledge Old Saints share is invaluable and we encourage you to participate in this key event.
The next projects following on from his organic vegetable gardening and brewing, were going to be roasting coffee beans and smokng meat. Always having three projects on the go, Matthew was also teaching himself Spanish as he drove to the mine site each week – no doubt to apply when he got the overseas posting he was hoping for. Matthew was passionate about the outdoors and would go skiing and camping as much as he could. He loved being on the family property where he could tend to the grapevines and sheep and “be a farmer”. Matthew was an inspiring individual, with a strong sense of character, breadth of interest, and grand dreams. He will continue to inspire everyone he came into contact with, to be fearless and have the courage and compassion to embrace life.
Born in Ndola, Zambia, Chisela moved to Perth in 2003 with his guardians Jill and Dave Black, after Jill (a swimming coach) noticed his talent in the pool while on a trip to Africa. Chisela was warmly-welcomed into the All Saints’ community as a Year 10 student and began training in the College’s Aquatic Centre with Director of Swimming and former Olympian, Mr Tom Stachewicz. The following year, at the age of 17, Chisela represented his home country of Zambia at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. Chisela also held numerous age group national records in 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke and competed in many notable competitions around the world, including the World Championships in Barcelona (2005), Western Australian State Championships (2006), and the Commonwealth Games (2002 and 2006).
All Old Saints who volunteer their time at the Futures Expo will be offered a light dinner on arrival and free barista-made refreshments over the two-hour event (please be in the new Years 5/6 building by 5.45pm for dinner). Your valuable contribution can be for as long as you wish and there is no obligation to stay for the entire duration of the Expo. If you can volunteer your time, please register here: http://oldsaints.ascollege.wa.edu.au/Expo2017 For further information, please email Futures’ Facilitator, Ms Grace Itzstein: Grace.Itzstein@allsaints.wa.edu.au
OLD SAINTS – WE NEED YOU!
After graduating from ASC, Chisela moved back to Zambia and started coaching for the Olympic Youth Development Centre in Lusaka. Sadly, at the age of 29, Chisela suddenly passed away last year. His funeral took place in his home of Ndola. DoveTAILS Volume 11 | june 2017
