From the Old Saints’ President 2017 was a busy and productive year for the Old Saints and we are looking forward to increasing our community engagement in 2018. This year’s focus is to connect Old Saint members with volunteer opportunities, one of which is the ‘Cooking for the Homeless’ initiated by the Parents & Friends’ Society (P&F). We welcome anyone wishing to volunteer with various service programs to join the new Old Saints’ Volunteers Facebook page. Have you put your details on the Old Saints’ Business Directory? You do not have to be a business owner plus your information will automatically be added to the new online All Saints’ Business Directory, funded by the P&F. The Old Saints would like to say a special thank you to College staff who volunteered their time at Pasar Malam to assist with our fundraising cause, Living Child: Oliver Beath (1998), Greg Clarke, Scott Corbett, Penelope Crane, Katie Dolan, Louise Elscot, Gordon Gatti, Adam Goor (2007), Erin Harvey (née Kerr, 2003), Sara Mano, and College Captains, Lauren Anderson and Chris Ivison. After much due thought and consideration, the Old Saints are delighted to have finalised their first Strategic Plan and look forward to meeting our Mission, Vision and Values. Details can be found on the Old Saints’ website by going to: http://oldsaints.ascollege.wa.edu.au I hope you enjoy reading this edition of Dovetails and remember to save the date for the Futures Expo in June and the annual Beer, Bubbles & Bites event in November! Dunk tank fun at Pasar Malam 2018 Some ASC staff went above and beyond for the Old Saints at Pasar Malam this year when they volunteered to await their fate on the dunk tank seat. MC, Zac Watkinson (2017) and crowd controller, Sam Neill (2017) kept the evening alive with their engaging personalities and witty banter. Old Saint volunteers, Sian Angel (2002), Matt Conroy (2015), Noah Gliosca (2017), Katelyn Hann (2015), Christian Long (2013), Cam Wright (2015) and Jeremy Wright (2017) assisted with taking money and controlling the dunk tank. Thanks to community support, we raised $565.40 to help support Living Child – details on page 6.

Beer, Bubbles & Bites 2017 On Saturday, 28 October the annual Beer, Bubbles & Bites welcomed Old Saints back to All Saints’ College. The inclement weather did not deter many Old Saints from returning to the College for a campus tour, live music from the Two Cent Professionals and the opportunity to reconnect with some current and former staff. It was wonderful to see two parents attend with their second generation Old Saint daughters. Foundation students from the Class of 1985, Sonia Johnson (nÊe Reed) and Simon Stone were proud to escort Kirsty Johnson and Jaz Stone (both 2016) to the event.

The Little Bar Cart provided the bubbles and beer while Miss Lucy tempted taste buds with delicious bao buns. Entertainment was supplied by Old Saint jazz musicians, Ziggy Atwell (2006, vocals), Tim Deacon (2008, bass guitar), Aidan Harris (2008, trumpet), Luke Harris (2006, saxophone) and one of the ASC College Music tutors, Chris Musitano.

Save the date! Beer, Bubbles & Bites 2018 takes on a new feel as a sundowner on Friday, 2 November (5.30pm to 8.30pm). There will be live entertainment and a campus tour, plus a child-minding facility.

Nathan Langworthy (2011) and Ryan Panizza (2015) Two Old Saints who graduated four years apart have been accepted into the prestigious National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in Sydney, whose alumni include Mel Gibson, Cate Blanchett, Russell Crowe and Hugo Weaving, to name but a few. Nathan (left) and Ryan (right), each auditioned for, and each won a place of the ten that were offered nationally. By chance, Nathan and Ryan had both been studying a Diploma of Acting at the WA Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) when they decided to audition for NIDA. The process involved performing both a contemporary and classical monologue. “The fact that NIDA is in Sydney was a huge draw for me. It is the arts hub of Australia,” said Ryan. Nathan added, “The list of alumni who have graduated from NIDA was a major enticement for me. Pretty much every big Australian actor has come out of NIDA.” Ryan and Nathan are among six Perth actors to be accepted into the full-time three-year Bachelor of Fine Arts (Acting) course at NIDA in NSW this year.

Mitch Kirkby (2012) Last year Mitch received the amazing news that he had been selected to travel to New York and perform in the show Burn the Floor. Mitch’s incredible success as a Ballroom Dancer has seen him win numerous dance titles in Australia. His hard work and dedication has allowed him the opportunity to travel on a cruise ship for six months down the East Coast of America and to the Caribbean, performing in four main shows a week, plus two ‘Welcome Aboard’ shows and two side shows, dancing between 35 and 40 hours a week. In his spare time, he also teaches Salsa, Cha Cha and Samba classes. What does he miss about home? “Definitely my bed! The one I sleep on every night is tiny.” 3

Kieran Longbottom (2002) Kieran’s passion for rugby started at ASC when he was 13 years old. After spending time playing in the UK for the Saracens and Sale, he is now looking forward to returning to where his career first began, as part of Western Force. Kieran entered Force history on 3 May 2008, playing against the Chiefs at Subiaco and becoming the first West Australian to go through local rugby ranks and make his Super Rugby debut. Kieran is heading back to play for the Western Force in the World Cup Series which kicks off on Friday, 4 May 2018.

Jason Chan (1988) When Jason graduated from ASC in 1988 with the intention of becoming a doctor, he did not expect to end up a professional actor, playing the Green Power Ranger from Power Rangers Ninja Storm (US TV series). Jason studied medicine at UWA and was a General Practitioner for several years before he entered the National

Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in Sydney, to study acting full time. On graduating he had the wonderful opportunity to play the Green Power Ranger from Power Rangers Ninja Storm, which was filmed in New Zealand. On returning to Australia, Jason saw an absence of good Asian roles on TV and film and relocated to Singapore for work opportunities. He and a colleague went into partnership and launched BananaMana Films which is now an award-winning Singaporean production company that specialises in creating premium Asian-scripted dramas in English for web, TV and film.

The doctor, turned actor, turned filmmaker, said “Our company focuses on creating aspirational Asian content in English for global distribution. This is our way of creating the role models that we never saw in our childhood” To learn more about Jason’s production company BananaMana Films, visit: bananamanafilms.com

Sam Brown (2006) On becoming frustrated with his bank while travelling, Sam became intent on his entrepreneurial idea of developing an app for Australians to easily handle their money here and overseas. Raising some capital from Perth and Melbourne-based investors, allowed Sam and his team to build the app, (including the underlying payment technology), establish a partnership with VISA and plan their market launch. Hence, Pelikin was born. Built for a global lifestyle and smartphones, Pelikin is developing a secure multi-currency online environment allowing instant international payments to be made within the Pelikin community. The app and debit card combo will be compatible with any ATM worldwide that accepts VISA, with no international fees.

Pelikin is due to be launched in the middle of this year and aims to change the way millennials fund their lifestyles. To learn more about Pelikin, visit: pelikin.co

Katrina Brogden (1991) Katrina is a qualified clinical pharmacist who works in Coronary Care at Fiona Stanley Hospital and has taken her long service leave to spend two months volunteering on the Mercy Ship, ‘Africa Mercy’. Katrina is required to fund her own flights, accommodation and food on the ship ($6 000). An added challenge is that all the medications are labelled in French! This is the second time Katrina has generously volunteered to work as a pharmacist on the Mercy Ships. Previously, she spent 15 months on board the ‘Anastasia’ that was based

in Liberia and Gabon, in Africa. Not only did Katrina volunteer her time but she also needed to raise $20 000. A ship is the most efficient platform to deliver a state-of-the-art hospital to regions where clean water, electricity, medical facilities and skilled personnel are almost non-existent. In addition to the surgeries performed onboard, ship-based teams also serve in local areas providing a wide array of services to increase health and wellbeing, including dental clinics, community health education and agricultural projects. On the weekends Katrina visits local pharmacies and spends time in orphanages engaging in activities with the children. To learn more, visit: mercyships.org.au

Pip O’Meara (née Lambert, 2006) Why not exercise and give to charity at the same time? After working in an orphanage in South Sudan, Pip O’Meara (née Lambert, 2006) and her husband Ben returned to Perth last year and wanted to continue to make a sustainable difference. Wanting to develop an original not-for-profit organisation they are delighted to have recently opened Power to Empower, a strength and conditioning gym in Cockburn.

Sara David (née Lindegger, 1987) Living Child was founded by midwife, Sara, in 2013. Living Child is a not-for-profit, non-government charity that aims to reduce the maternal and infant death rate in remote villages of Papua New Guinea (PNG). Sara was asked by male village leaders to provide training to village birth attendants due to the very high death rate of childbearing women. Five women die every day in PNG simply because they’re pregnant and do not have access to health services.

Living Child provides training, visual teaching aids and birthing kits to midwives and village birth

attendants. Sara has also introduced contraceptive implants as a form of modern family planning. Since February 2017, Living Child has supported on the ground community development volunteers, Jim and Robyn Nottingham, who have facilitated the completion of a new maternity building in the small District town of Angoram, the main referral centre for women in the remote villages. Living Child has provided funds to purchase medical equipment for this unit and are working in partnership with the local government to ensure maternal newborn services are operational again under the guidance of a senior local midwife.

As a member of Power to Empower you can show your support just by going to the gym! All profits go to their partner charity, Initiate, which works towards alleviating poverty. There is also an opportunity to be hands-on with clothing drives to fundraising events if you so desire, but

it is certainly not expected. If you are ready to make a life change, Ben and Pip are thrilled to help you along your path to a fit and healthy life and achieve your goals, whether you are an elite athlete, body builder or just wanting to keep in shape. Ben puts in over 90 hours a week at the gym, while Pip earns their keep working as a full-time physiotherapist before heading to the gym to support Ben. Pip has also travelled to Kenya with her charity work and led a party of Years 11 and 12 students on one trip which she found a particularly rewarding experience. Old Saints return to the fold It is always lovely to welcome Old Saints back to the College and recently we have added five staff members to the current 10 Old Saints we already have on board. Welcome back to the community: Shona Browne (née Esslemont, 1987) Shona has taught primary school students in

Kalgoorlie, Newman and more recently Palmyra. When Shona was at ASC as a student the Junior School did not exist, so returning to the College she saw an incredible change.

Alicia Cuttone (2011) Alicia feels as if she never really left, as since that time she has

worked with the ASC Out of School Hours Care and has helped with relief teaching in the Junior School. She finds it quite ‘surreal’ when she sees Senior School staff who taught her!

Duncan Brown (2001) Duncan has worked for the last nine and a half years at Lakeland

Senior High School as a Mathematics and Physical Education teacher. He is delighted to return to the College and assist in offering the same great opportunities that were afforded to him, to the current students.

Michelle Shine (née Dayman, 1989) When Michelle left ASC she worked in engineer

recruitment for many years. After having children, she successfully started a home-based cake decorating business, For Goodness Cake. She has returned to the College to assist in the Home Economics Department and finds some elements ‘eerily’ the same as when she left!

DOVETAILS VOLUME 13 | MAY 2018

Kristen Zaurs (née Prummel, 1990) Life after ASC took many avenues for Kristen, as a mother to three children, a Project Manager in the engineering sector and then relief teaching. She feels so at home at the College and it is as if she never really left!

Current Old Saint staff: Oliver Beath (1998), Sally Fairnie (née Browne, 1995), Rahni Greene (2002), Adam Goor (2007), Katrina Harris (2007), Erin Harvey (née Kerr, 2003), Aaron Musgrave (2013), Karyn Osmetti (2006), Tim Russell (1990), Sue Wilson (née Leslie, 1985)

Casey Hyde (2004)

Bec Giumelli (née Gorman, 2003)

ASC Early Childhood Coordinator, Sara Mano (pictured left) was delighted to catch up with Old Saint, Casey (pictured right), at the Cottesloe Park Run in January.

Bec has worked for BP for the last 10 years and left WA with her husband in 2015 for a job opportunity at BP’s Head Office in London.

Casey is blind and after suffering severe depression in 2013, in a bid to be fiercely independent, Casey eventually came to terms with the fact she needed community support to help ride her tandem bike. This required her to seek a guide to assist her with the challenge of becoming physically active again and eventuated in her competing in triathlons. Five years later, due to her incredibly positive and inspiring attitude Casey now aims to complete in the 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo.

In July last year, Bec moved to the US to work as an Operations Superintendent in BPs Toledo Oil Refinery in Ohio. “We’ve bought a beautiful 93 year-old home and are making the most of living in the US. The weather has been a challenge to get used to, as it gets down to -30 degrees in winter – a bit different to Perth!” she said.

Amanda Tincknell (née Willis, 2004) Amanda and Daniel met in 2007 at the Subiaco Football Club where Amanda worked, and Daniel played footy. After dating for nine years, Daniel proposed on a sunset beach in Bintan Island, Indonesia. On 4 November 2017, close family and friends celebrated their marriage at Black Brewing Co, Margaret River.

Charlotte Brown (née Saltmer, 2006) and Josh Brown (2003) Old Saints Charlotte Brown (née Saltmer, 2006) and Josh Brown (2003) didn’t meet one another until fate brought them together at a music festival on the other side of Australia. Charlotte and Josh both relocated separately to Melbourne in 2013 and 2014, respectively, and were introduced by mutual Old Saint friends at the Groovin the Moo Festival in Bendigo. After two years of dating, Josh proposed to Charlotte while bushwalking in the idyllic Hepburn Springs. The happy couple returned to Perth to exchange their vows at Barrett Lane Function Centre on Saturday, 13 February 2018. Among the 110 guests at the celebration, there were 29 Old Saints, including those in the Brown’s Bridal Party − Sam Brown (2006), Claire Ellis (née Saltmer, 2001), Cord Hansen (2003) and Glyn Quartermaine (2003). A few days later, Charlotte and Josh jetted off on a relaxing honeymoon to Ko Yao Yai, an island off Phuket, Thailand.

Having lived together in New York and London, they are now happily settled back in New York.

Luke Harris (2006) On Saturday, 27 January 2018, Luke and Meagan were married in Mosman Park surrounded by family and friends in an intimate ceremony. All Saints’ College Futures Expo 2018

ALL SAINTS’ COLLEGE BABYSITTING CLUB

Monday, 11 June 2018 | 6.30pm - 8.30pm

The annual Futures Expo will be held on Monday, 11 June 2018 between 6.30pm and 8.30pm and we are looking for Old Saints to chat with the ASC students about their personal career paths since leaving the College. Current students always comment on how rewarding it is to chat to Old Saints who provide honest, down-toearth facts about their various careers – not just the ultimate rewards, but the pitfalls and diversions they may have encountered along their career journey. Come along and enjoy our hospitality while you meet and chat with current ASC students from Years 8 to 12, and their parents. (It is compulsory for all Year 10 students to attend). The knowledge Old Saints share is invaluable, and we encourage you to participate in this key event. All Old Saints who volunteer their time at the Futures Expo will be offered a light dinner on arrival and free baristamade coffee over the two-hour event (please be in Building 8 by 5.30pm for dinner). Your valuable contribution can be for as long as you wish, and there is no obligation to stay for the entire duration of the Expo. If you can volunteer your time please register: http://oldsaints.ascollege.wa.edu.au/FuturesExpo2018 For further information, please email Futures’ Facilitator, Ms Grace Itzstein: Grace.Itzstein@allsaints.wa.edu.au

Would you like to give back to the community? The Old Saints focus to connect members with volunteer opportunities is an area where we can give back to the community. One such venture is the P&F’s initiative ‘Cooking for the Homeless’ which they coordinate four times a year. Recently, Emma Arnold and Will Litchfield (2017) volunteered with other community members to help cook 400 individual, nutritious meals for The Salvation Army to distribute to the homeless. Other opportunities may arise where Old Saints can help with the Disabled Surfers Association of Australia, delivering food to the less fortunate, assisting with the College’s Service Learning programs or ‘flicking a sausage’ during Heritage Week! We welcome anyone wishing to volunteer with various community programs to join the new Old Saints’ Volunteers Facebook page. This will keep you notified of any volunteering opportunities that may arise.

Photo: (left) Will Litchfield (2017) cooks up a storm at the ‘Cooking for the Homeless’, while Bruce Lee (1986) and Kirsty Johnson (2016) assist Rev Bruce Hyde and the Parish cook, and serve breakfast at St Bartholomews’ Lime Cafe (right).

Promote your business! Don’t just ‘Google it’ the next time you need a tap fixed, a make-up artist, a dentist or a lawyer! Have you put your details on the Old Saints’ Business Directory? If you would like to promote your business or employment information to the wider community don’t hesitate to upload your details today. These will also be automatically added to the new online All Saints’ Business Directory, funded by the P&F. It is completely free and opens up your connection to the whole All Saints’ community. oldsaints.ascollege.wa.edu.au

Competition Fun! Congratulations to Steven Kane (2007) and Harrison Morgan (2012) on coming first and second place, respectively, in the Old Saints’ online Oscars Competition! Keep your eyes open and join in the fun with a flutter on the Oscars, English Premier League, Super Rugby, NRL or AFL series. There’s lots of fun to be had and prizes to be won! Steven loved being $150 richer and Harrison is more than happy with his runner’s-up prize of $100. Make sure your contact details are up to date on the Old Saints’ website so you don’t miss out on the next competition! oldsaints.ascollege.wa.edu.au DOVETAILS
