Living in Dubai with a Young Family

Although Dubai has a reputation as a thriving business hub, it’s also a surprisingly child-friendly place. Most of the residential communities dotted around the suburbs have been carefully designed to cater for a family lifestyle, offering access to green open spaces with well-maintained paths, barbecue areas and children’s play zones (complete with rubber crash-mats) and easy access to an excellent education.

Villas, townhouses and apartments in these areas offer spacious, well-designed accommodation, usually with generous outdoor space and a swimming pool in the garden. These communities provide a safe and friendly environment in which to bring up children. Popular but more expensive areas include Arabian Ranches and the Palm Jumeirah as well as Emirates Living communities such as The Lakes, The Springs and The Meadows, while some of the communities around Dubai Sports City, Mirdif and Garhoud are attractive to more budget-conscious families.

Schools in Dubai There are hundreds of private schools in Dubai, many offering an international, English speaking education. Fees – as well as educational standards - can vary, so it pays to do some research first. KHDA is Dubai’s version of Ofsted and school reports are available on the KHDA website (www.khda.gov.ae). These communities provide a safe and friendly environment in which to bring up children. Places to play in Dubai Dubai has some beautiful public parks and beaches, which can be enjoyed in the cooler months. However parents should be aware that the region’s high temperatures mean that for five months of the year their children will need to remain in an air-conditioned environment. During this time it’s not difficult to find things to do, as Dubai has become one of the world’s most popular family holiday destinations. Whatever the time of year, kids can enjoy mall-based activities such as skiing or skating, visiting Dubai’s impressive aquarium or watching a children’s show.

There are also great days out to be enjoyed at KidZania – an indoor play environment built to resemble a miniature town – and at Aquaventure, a waterpark with a dedicated play area for small children. Image Source : KidZania.ae

Places to Eat in Dubai Many restaurants make a special effort to reduce the stress of eating out with young children – even providing distractions such as pens and colouring sheets to assuage boredom. As well as the usual fast-food outlets serving pizzas, burgers and fries, there are restaurants that excel at delivering fantastic food in a timely manner and a childfriendly environment. TripAdvisor reviewers have praised Beachcombers (close to the beach and Burj al Arab) for family brunches, Italian restaurant Bussola (near the seafront) for its ‘Kids Happy Hour’ and Liwan (just off Fish Roundabout) for skilful hosting of family parties and festive gatherings.
