All Tech Is Human: Building the Responsible Tech Pipeline

Page 1

Building the Responsible Tech pipeline; making it more diverse, multidisciplinary, and aligned with the public interest. We unite a diverse range of individuals and organizations across civil society, education, government, and industry in order to collectively co-create our future. We are building a better tech future by changing the people involved in it, bringing in new voices.

Founded in 2018, All Tech Is Human has been building community across a broad range of stakeholders. This uniquely positions us as a hub for the larger Responsible Tech movement and capable of building and expanding the Responsible Tech pipeline. We are a 501c3 non-profit through a fiscal sponsorship with Hopewell Fund.

Problem The development and deployment of technology, especially social media, influences everyone yet is made by a select few. If someone is impacted by tech they should have a voice in its process. Right now they don't and that's a problem.

Solution All Tech Is Human creates pathways for new voices from a diverse range of backgrounds to be directly involved in how technology is developed and deployed. If a greater diversity of individuals are involved in the process of tech, we can better create a future that considers technology's impact and is aligned with the public interest. This is the solution we provide.

We draw technologists, org leaders, startups, big tech, advocates, artists, designers, attorneys, college & grad students, academics, psychologists, sociologists, and more. Responsible Tech Job Board People are struggling to know where to find the new jobs that are being created around reducing the harms of technology. We saw a major need for a curated list of positions such as reducing hate speech on social media, roles in Responsible Tech, data privacy, AI Ethics, Trust & Safety, and more. As a connective tissue between civil society, government, and industry we are uniquely positioned as a pathway between those hiring for new roles and those looking to enter the field.

Responsible Tech Guide Released in September, 2020, our Responsible Tech Guide has had over 26k reads and is fast becoming the go-to reference for the Responsible Tech field. The free 163-page resource, created in partnership with NYU's Alliance for Public Interest Technology, provides key information on the nascent Responsible Technology field, including ecosystem maps, resources and interviews. We currently have a 75-person Responsible Tech Working Group working on expanding and revising the guide for a Fall 2021 release, along with pro bono work for more interactive features.

Slack group for the Responsible Tech community Started in December 2020, our new Slack group for the Responsible Tech community has quickly grown to nearly 1300 members! As we learned from our in-person gathering in 2018 and 2019, there was a major need for a hub to bring together a diverse group of individuals working toward a better tech future. We have channels focused on discussing careers in Responsible Tech, a popular reading group, event postings, introductions, and more. The Slack group serves the purpose of building up needed networks for individuals building their career in Responsible Tech, and promoting a culture of collaboration and knowledge-sharing.

Livestreams Our monthly livestream series is intended as a way to provide continued learning to a diverse audience and promote a multidisciplinary approach to Responsible Tech. Our series is done in partnership with TheBridge, which allows us to reach additional technologists and policymakers. Our livestreams have averaged 1k views (YouTube & Persicope) and featured noteworthy experts on topics such as misinformation, AI ethics, algorithmic bias, and getting more people involved in the Responsible Tech movement. Through our partnership with The Radical AI Podcast, our livestream conversations are turned into a podcast and included curated resources and action items in a Continue the Conversation series.

Reports Our reports bring together input from our diverse community to take a holistic, collective approach to a complex societal issue. They feature contributions from over 100 collaborators each, compelling visualizations, and interviews with thought leaders and subject matter experts from across industry, education, government and civil society. The Business Case for AI Ethics had a first draft release in December 2020 and final release in April 2021 and has over 8k reads. Improving Social Media: The People, Organizations, & Ideas for a Better Tech Future was released in February 2021 and has over 9k reads.

By involving a diverse range of thousands of people in the Responsible Tech movement and hearing directly from them about what issues they find important and what is needed, All Tech Is Human has invaluable insight into how we can co-create a better tech future.
