Potter around Staffordshire and enjoy a wide range of activities The pretty canal town of Stone is an old market town in the heart of Staffordshire situated in the valley of the river Trent which runs through the town and has provided Stone with its status as an important transport hub. Pottering on the river During the 18th century, the town was a popular stopping off point for stagecoaches and travellers en route through the Midlands and many coaching inns were established to service this activity. The river Trent had also been used for transporting cargo for centuries but this was further developed from 1770 when the Mersey and Trent rivers were connected thanks to the 48-mile stretch of the Grand Trunk Canal – partly backed by the famous potter, Josiah Wedgwood, who wanted an improved way of bringing raw materials to the potteries. Stoke-on-Trent is officially recognised as the world capital of ceramics and you can find many leading brands here in local shops as well as go on a factory tour, meet the skilled craftsmen and even have a go at creating your own masterpiece. The quality of the water in Stone was partly responsible for several brewers being located here, including Montgomery & Co and John Joules – the latter ceased brewing in 1974 but the old beer stores and bottling plant remains an imposing building on the canal.
The commercial traffic on the waterways in this area has now been replaced by the leisure craft that pass through the town and a new marina just south of the town at Aston Lock demonstrates the changing nature of the river. As well as 200 berths for moorings, this hidden gem at Aston Marina offers an idyllic haven for food lovers with an award-winning farm shop and waterside bistro. Gourmet reputation The region has a strong food and drink tradition, now represented by the Stone Food & Drink Festival which has grown from humble beginnings in the town’s Georgian High Street into one of the Midlands’ biggest and busiest food festivals. Taking place on the first weekend in October every year, Staffordshire’s biggest gastronomic gathering offers something for foodies of all ages: from talks, tastings and a beer tent through to live cookery demonstrations and a festival farmers’ market. The pedestrianised town centre in Stone offers a good mix of well-known high street retailers together with independent shops, boutiques and specialist stores but there are further options in Stafford and Stoke. You can also enjoy a unique shopping experience at Trentham Shopping Village – just 5 miles north – with an eclectic mix of smaller independent stores alongside some big brand names all housed in a timber lodge village.
Commuters and families Elm Gardens is in Oulton Road, just a few minutes from Stone town centre and is well positioned for families. There are excellent schools locally - the closest include Christ Church First School (Primary) with around 100 pupils, Christ Church Academy (Middle School) and Alleyne’s Academy (13-18yrs) as well as the highly rated St. Dominics’s Priory (Independent). When not at school, the kids will also enjoy a visit to Alton Towers - Stone is ideally located just 15 miles from one of the UK’s biggest and best theme parks with state-of-the-art rides and rollercoasters. Commuters are also well catered for with excellent links to the M6, Liverpool, Manchester and Birmingham. The local railway station at Stone is less than a mile away from the development while Birmingham Airport (46 miles) and John Lennon Airport, Liverpool (60 miles) are also within easy reach for travelling further afield.
