Bird remembers vividly that they were awakened each morning by the sound of “ding ding ding” that came from the quarry nearby. Being greeted by that familiar tune brought great warmth and comfort as it brightens Birds morning and empowers them for the long day ahead. Humans would come and dig stones every day and Bird looked forward to the human children who accompanied their parents to work at the quarry as they would feed and play with Bird. As the days go by, more humans flood the quarry extracting stones and building houses. The undisrupted harmony between species was what Bird loved most about this place. Unfortunately, it is the time of the year when they have to migrate to another location to reunite with Bird’s relatives and friends. Bird was longing to return to their bustling home and be greeted by their vibrant energy.

Bird is intrigued by the latest construction taking place down at the creek. Days and months of men working by the creek and finally the outcome is an area of water where bird sees children coming to play. Splashing around with the trickling sounds of the water from the natural flowing creek that sprung over the rocks in its way coupled with the giggling sounds of children. Bird enjoys the view from afar as bird flies by and only occasionally stops by when no one is around for a quick bath and a stop for water. Although, bird realizes that the creek is now always empty with no children or adults playing in it. (Since at a point in time, there were restrictions on swimming in the creek and it was abandoned) Nevertheless, bird goes along with its daily routine, flying above the creek that serves as the flow of the park and stops by the creek to sip water and soak on a hot day without interference from humans.

It was loud, so, so loud. It felt like bird was going to erupt. Bird knew this feeling, these sensations and scents and sounds. Bird knew how death followed these machines like a ghost. These beings were foul and huge, with no regard for life. They appeared to kill for pleasure, not food. As bird soared the skies, bird remembered the carcasses left behind. Animals, plants, trees. Anything that got in the machine’s way was discarded like a husk. They left their tracks carelessly, knowing that they were the ultimate predator. And little things like Bird? Bird was the ultimate prey. They roamed the skies, circling, and knew that they must wait until these machines, and the two-legged creatures within left. Otherwise, who knew what would happen to bird? They did not care to find out.

The scarce leaves look like wildfire under the early morning sun as Bird looks across the trees from their nest, in stark contrast to the chill that lingers in the air. The seasons are changing, the days are getting shorter, which only means it’s time to go. There’s a sense of sadness, at leaving the place they called home for the past season. But on the other wing, Bird can feel the excitement building, for the adventure that lies ahead. Every year, it’s when they feel the happiest, Bird does not always remember why, but they know it when they see it. Bird’s emotions battle within them as Bird takes in the air. With each flap of their wings, Bird rises higher into the chilly wind, until the trees shrink below them, becoming a distant world. They soar for miles until they sense the change in the air, the warmth and feel of the sun recomposing fragments of a memory Bird thought lost. Bird sees it then. Remembers the shape of the hills, the sound of the flowing river and a thrill travel through them. Peaking above the mountain and through the trees, the sun sinks low toward the horizon. The instinct guiding them now quiet, as Bird sees first place, they ever called home.

12 M O N S T E R S Bird flies over to their nest, nestled in a hollowed-out crack of a fallen eucalyptus tree truck. Almost completed, Bird still has to find a couple more twigs to place to complete their nest before they can call it a home for the eggs. With only a couple more pieces to go Bird pauses and stays with the nest for a while. Shaken by an experience they had in the past. At the same stage of construction of their nest they go out looking for a few more pieces to complete the nest. When Bird comes back, they see humans, the humans are moving the fallen tree Bird has been building their nest in, close to the safest place by the creek. They fly around, keeping their distance as to not get caught by the humans moving Bird’s new home, waiting for these monsters to leave. Aleef

Bird flies down to the earth below searching for the safest place to land by the creek bed feeling their throat becoming dry. A sense of familiarity washes over bird, so they wait. Frog is birds’ friend, well at least that is what bird thinks. Every day, by the safest part of the creek bed bird sees frog. So, bird sits there waiting for frog to show. Bird doesn't know how long he has been sitting there wondering where frog has gone. Bird goes again the next day to the safest spot by the creek bed, they wait again for frog since they saw them just yesterday. Frog never showed. Bird waits again and again and again. But Frog will never show.
