Tucked between a mountain range on the west and the San Francisco Bay on the east, the area provides visitors a diversity of outdoor experiences. The Santa Cruz mountains, which rise more than 3,000 feet, are home to dozens of wineries and more than 220 miles of regional trails that wind through redwood groves and open space preserves and provide panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and Silicon Valley. The Palo Alto Baylands Nature Preserve is the largest tract of undisturbed marshland remaining in the San Francisco Bay. Visitors will find prime birdwatching and wildlife along the area’s marshland trails, as well as the opportunity to try wind surfing, kayaking, sailing or other water sports.

Though downtown Palo Alto developed as a sleepy college town, the emergence of Stanford University in the 1970s as the nation’s leading high-technology research center paved the way for hundreds of startup businesses. While many of the region’s famed tech headquarters are closed to the public, there are plenty of tech destinations in the region that are accessible.

But at a minimum, any visit should also include a walk or drive through the tree-lined residential neighborhoods (among the costliest in the nation) and a stop in downtown, which includes a mix of museums, several shopping districts and a variety of dining choices. The Stanford campus itself is the biggest visitor attraction, and visitors could easily spend a day or longer exploring the beautiful campus. Enjoy your visit to the Midpeninsula! BUILDINGS THAT MOVED - THE HOSTESS HOUSE I t’s not just that the people of the American West are restless, the buildings themselves sometimes pack up and move when - for one reason or another - the neighborhood no longer suits them or the neighbors no longer want them or opportunity waits down the road.

Hostess Hou se Built 1918

27 University Avenue, Palo Alto

The Hostess House was designed by architect Julia Morgan in the Craftsman architectural style. It is the only intact building remaining from the two Army training camps (Camp Fremont and Camp Kearny) established in California during World War I. The Hostess House was originally located in Camp Fremont, a thousand-acre mobilization camp built in Menlo Park after the United States entered WWI in 1917. Hostess Houses were built by the

YWCA in forty continental Army training camps to serve as meeting places for women and children coming to military posts to visit friends, husbands, and relatives enlisted in the service. With the end of WW I, Camp Fremont was dismantled except for two buildings: the Oasis Bar & Grill and the Hostess House. Palo Alto purchased the Hostess House and relocated it to University Avenue in 1919, ZKHUH LW EHFDPH WKH QDWLRQ·V ÀUVW PXQLFLpally funded Community Center.

Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory: 391 San Antonio Road, Mountain View | William Shockley’s laboratory was the first high-tech company to work on silicon-based semiconductor devices, which led to the development of Silicon Valley in 1956. The original building is no longer there, but sculptures of packaged semiconductors, including a transistor and a diode, are on display at the site to commemorate Shockley’s contributions to the tech world. Fairchild Semiconductor: 844 E. Charleston Road, Palo Alto | This commercial building is where the group of defectors from William Shockley’s Semiconductor Laboratory known as the “Traitorous Eight” (led by Intel co-founder Robert Noyce) invented the microchip in 1957. The building is now home to an interior design studio, but the building and the California State Landmark plaque outside the entrance are visible from the sidewalk. Sand Hill Road: Menlo Park | Nearly every major tech company — Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook, Twitter — has been the beneficiary of early funding from venture capital firms on this arterial road that runs between El Camino Real and Interstate 280. For those who want to spend time on Sand Hill, the Michelin-starred Madera restaurant located at Rosewood Hotel (2825 Sand Hill Road) is open to the general public. Stanford Research Park: 3160 Porter Drive, Palo Alto | Founded in 1951 as the first technology-oriented park, Stanford Research Park has housed many electronics pioneers and high-profile companies including Steve Jobs’ NeXT Computer and Xerox PARC. Today it is home to more than 150 companies, including Hewlett-Packard, Tesla Motors, VMware and Ford Motor Company. Visitors are free to wander the 700-acre park.

Shopping Everything visitors need — and want — around town

F

rom high-end department stores and one-of-akind boutiques to Michelin-starred restaurants, the Midpeninsula’s open-air malls and shopping districts provide a variety of options, each with its own distinctive flavor and offerings.

PALO ALTO Stanford Shopping Center: With 140 luxury stores and specialty boutiques, a mix of restaurants and cafes, sculpted gardens, cultural events and a European-style street market, this 1.4-million-square-foot open-air center attracts visitors year round from near and far. The center recently underwent a multi-million dollar renovation that transformed its west end into a “lifestyle center” with gardens, grassy sitting areas, an outdoor fireplace and space for more than 25 new, not-in-everymall shops. Downtown Palo Alto: Centered along University Avenue, this pedestrian-friendly district packs in two movie theaters — including one with a working Wurlitzer organ — multiple galleries, a bookstore, an eclectic mix retail stores, restaurants and bars, along a 10-block area that stretches between Alma and Tasso streets. California Avenue: Just south of the Stanford campus, this five-block district between El Camino Real and Park Boulevard is quieter than downtown and features boutiques and a large number of restaurants popular with local residents.

Stanford Shopping Center. Photo by Veronica Weber. Town & Country Village: Located on El Camino Real across from Stanford Stadium, it’s hard to miss the distinctive red-tiled rooftops and rustic wood storefronts at this outdoor shopping center, which features more than 70 specialty shops, restaurants and services surrounding a network of pedestrian walkways.

MOUNTAIN VIEW San Antonio center: The corner of El Camino Real and San Antonio Road is home to two distinct shopping areas that were once part of a 56-acre outdoor mall built in the 1950s. San Antonio Shopping Center, located on the southernmost portion of the property, is a traditional retail center with big-box stores, including Trader Joe’s market and 24 Hour Fitness. The Village at San Antonio Center, which runs along San Antonio Road, underwent major renovations over the past few years that have transformed the corner into a modern, mixed-use center with luxury apartments, office space, parks, plazas and about 30 new boutiques and restaurants. Castro Street With dozens of dining choices and a mix of music venues, performance spaces, coffee shops, pubs and book stores, the Castro Street area that runs eight blocks from El Camino Real to West Evelyn Avenue through downtown is a popular entertainment destination. Visitors can find everything from Thai-style rolled ice cream and vintage comic books to a museum dedicated to locks.

LOS ALTOS AND MENLO PARK Downtown Los Altos: Don’t expect to find big-box retail stores in Los Altos’ six-block downtown triangle. This tree-lined district, known for its quaint small-town feel, features a mix of locally owned boutiques, restaurants, salons and other services. Downtown Menlo Park With numerous outdoor street cafes that stay open for late-night dining, Santa Cruz Avenue is a lively destination. The district includes a mix of boutiques, galleries and shops for everyday needs.

Hall of Fame for Best Bar/Lounge and Latin American Cuisine — La Bodeguita del Medio With a name that the business translates to “the little bar in the middle of the block,” La Bodeguita del Medio certainly exceeds expectations. Modeled after an establishment of the same name in Havana, Cuba, La Bodeguita del Medio is known for traditional Cuban fare, a lively atmosphere and, certainly not least, its mojito cocktails. While the original bar was a known hangout of visionaries such as Ernest Hemingway and Pablo Neruda, you’re sure to meet someone interesting over great food and drinks at this California Avenue location. 463 S. Best Steak Restaurant — Sundance The Steakhouse Sundance The Steakhouse has been in business for more than four decades and has the steak to show for it. Recreation Trails, golf courses and tennis courts keep visitors busy at 777 Embarcadero Road). Both are lit at night. There are many courts on the Stanford campus, but you are expected to have a university affiliation.

BIKE AROUND TOWN The area prides itself on accommodating and encouraging bike riding. The most popular rides use Alpine, Arastradero, Portola and Sand Hill roads to create loops of different lengths. Skilled riders wanting to cycle several hours or all day ride up to Skyline Boulevard and down to the coast and back. In Mountain View, try biking around Shoreline Lake, located in the Baylands just south of Palo Alto.

WALK, RUN AND EXPLORE The Stanford “Dish” loop offers almost 4 miles of paved path that winds through the Stanford foothills with tremendous views of the university, Palo Alto and entire Peninsula. The Pearson-Arastradero Preserve, in the foothills beyond Stanford near 1530 Arastradero Road, has a network of easy trails ideal for one- to two-hour hikes and a small unstaffed visitor’s center with exhibits. Walkers with an interest in history and architecture will enjoy one of several historical walks around Palo Alto’s neighborhoods. Palo Alto Stanford Heritage (pastheritage.org) offers walking tours and brochures for selfguided ones.

Safety & Transportation Medical services and transportation are available at all hours Palo Alto is an extremely safe community, and other than taking obvious precautions when out at night, visitors should feel comfortable freely exploring the city. Use common sense and extra care when using the pedestrian tunnels at the train stations, and avoid walking alone at night. Medical care is available either at the Urgent Care department at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation (795 El Camino Real; adults, 650-321-4121; pediatric, 650-853-6558; pamf.org) or the emergency room at Stanford Hospital (900 Quarry Road Extension; 650-723-5111; stanfordhealthcare.org). Wine Tasting Exploring the Peninsula’s vineyards and wineries

T

he Santa Cruz Mountains — which rise 3,786 feet above the San Francisco Bay at their highest point and stretch the entire length of the Peninsula — are home to hundreds of intimate artisan wineries and private vineyards. The region’s higher elevations, cooler temperatures and frequent fog, provide the perfect micro-climate for growing Pinot noir and Chardonnay grapes. If you have at least a few hours, it’s worth taking a scenic drive (tinyurl.com/ScenicWineDrive) along the winding mountain roads to visit some of these wineries and take in the panoramic view of Silicon Valley.
