hether it’s producing a Broadway-style play, designing a product or building a go-kart, the Palo Alto area is home to a host of many programs aimed at helping local youth develop and sharpen their team-building skills. Organizers from various local camps that we featured below said that knowing how to work in a team is a valuable life-long skill and one of the most satisfying ways for kids to have fun and build lasting friendships. “They really grow in confidence and teamwork ... and (learning) just how to make friends,” said Ricardo Flores, a camp director at Galileo Camps in Palo Alto. “I think summer camp is a great environment to start exploring their place in the world and how their actions can affect others in a positive way.” Palo Alto camps aren’t alone in focusing on team-building activities. Camps nationwide have also recognized the benefits of such programs. According to a recent survey from the nonprofit American Camp Association, 75% of the 2,400 ACA-accredited camps across the country offer some form of team-building programs. Below is a list of some local camps that emphasize team building and collaboration.

Bald Eagle Sports Camps At Bald Eagle Sports Camps, participants are told to stick to their “R.O.O.T.S.” (respect for the rules, opponents, officials, teammates and self). Founded by Bob McFarlane, a physical education teacher at Los

Altos High School, Bald Eagle Sports provides seven week-long camps that teach kids team-building skills through competitive sports and games, from street hockey, basketball and dodgeball to yoga, dance and tag played with pool noodles. Activities are outfitted to be

accessible for kids of all skill levels and athletic abilities. “Everybody gets to be successful with their team and their age group,” said McFarlane, who is also a certified trainer from the Positive Coaching Alliance, a national nonprofit organization that emphasizes character building through youth sports. The goal for McFarlane is to get kids to look out for themselves and their peers. Each morning, before campers are split into co-ed teams, coaches talk to them about proper conduct and how they can improve as an individual, a teammate and an athlete. “We want to be focused on filling the ‘e-tank’ or emotional tank of the people around us,” McFarlane said. “We want to encourage others, and we don’t bully or put people down.” After the morning round of games, kids are free to enjoy 15 indoor and outdoor activities in the

camp’s “Go Zone.” Each session is one week long, Monday-Friday. Registration for the Summer Multi-Sports Camp is now open. Sessions start June 15. For more information, go to baldeaglecamps.com.

Camp BizSmart To give kids a head start in the entrepreneurial world, Bizsmart connects students as young as 11 years old with business mentors who have experience in areas such as finance, marketing and product innovation. “One of the things that is difficult for young people today is to be connected to people that are right in the trench of doing things,” said Peggy Gibbs, co-founder, CFO and COO of Camp BizSmart. Each year, students team up to tackle a “business case” modeled after real (continued on page 8) Summer Camp Connection 2020 • 5

problems that companies are currently trying to solve. Guided by mentors, students are given the opportunity to work in teams to come up with a solution over the course of 10 days and then present their business plan to an audience. For example, in 2017 David Wells, former CFO of Netflix, challenged students to find out how virtual reality should be used in its streaming service. BizSmart campers then tackled questions like whether Netflix should have its own virtual reality hardware to go along with its content; what percentage of consumers

will actually be interested in virtual or augmented reality; and should this enre tertainment option be priced ter separately or included in the se subscription? s By presenting an issue to the campers and asking them the to collaborate to solve an s a issue, Gibbs said BizSmart BizSma not only helps students wi with their academic and career goals, but also helps g them develop soft skills, such as knowing how to collaborate effectively and collab how to “disagree without being disagreeable.” bei The camp offers five programs for students pr in different age groups, including international in workshops in counw tries like Peru and United Arab Emirates, where participants are tasked with creating hightech product desig designs. “By the time they get out of our camps, they’re gonna walk around the world much differently,” Gibbs said. “They’re gonna see things as problems to solve, things to make better, ways to engage and add value in the world.” Summer programs begin in June. For more information on dates and on how to apply, go to campbizsmart.org.

Hope Musical Theatre Sara Hope, founder and director of Hope Musical Theatre, brings Broadway to the Bay Area each summer through her theater camps, which are designed to give kids from kindergarten to high school the opportunity to

produce Broadway-style musicals with their own creative twist over the course of 10 days. “Every two weeks, different children come with different energy, different excitement and different talents,” said Hope, who is a graduate of New York University TISCH School of the Arts. Campers at Hope Musical Theatre closely work with each other, professional choreographers, a live band and Hope, who directs every play, to reimagine classic American muscials and tales, complete with props, costumes and sets that kids help create. The theater might reproduce existing plays, but Hope emphasizes that no production is ever the same because students are encouraged to bring their own talents and personalities to the performance, whether it’s hula-hooping, tapdancing or speaking another language. “If they have some (specific) talent, we’ll just change the show,” Hope said. “We’ll make it so it fits for them to have their special moment.” For example, Hope recalled a year where kids reimagined “Annie” into “Andy” because there was a boy whose singing abilities could not be ignored. To meet the ambitious 10-day timeline, everyone has to work together and encourage each other to memorize their lines and incorporate each individual’s creative ideas. “That is what true actors do,” Hope said. “They work together and they collaborate for this one goal.” Each session is two weeks long, Monday-Friday. Students can sign up for half or full ll days. Registration is now open and nd the first session begins June 8. For more information go to hopemusical theatre.com.

Galileo Camps: Go-kart building Galileo Camps offers multiple programs throughout the summer for students from pre-kindergarten to grade 10, including go-kart building for middle schoolers at the camp’s Palo Alto site in Walter Hays Elementary School. In the “Go-Kart Builders” session, youth in grades five through eight pair up to design and create their own go-karts. “Anything they can imagine, we have the capacity to create,” said camp director Ricardo Flores. Campers research how they want their vehicles to look, whether it’s a sports car or a spaceship. And using the materials provided by the camp, kids work in pairs to help each other create their own go-karts to race and take home after the week-long session. “At every moment, there’s an opportunity for collaboration and teamwork,” Flores said. “And the campers have such a blast trying their go-karts, racing them and seeing what redesign they can make to make it go faster, or to make sure their wheels don’t wobble.” Beyond go-karts, Galileo will start hosting multiple programs at Walter Hays, opening its Palo Alto site to more students at different grade levels. Each session is one week long and camp starts on June 8 at the Palo Alto site. Registration is now open. For more information, visit galileo-camps.com.

A BROADWAY EXPERIENCE!

OH RATS! KEEP RODENTS OUT OF THE HOME AND KIDS, PETS AND WILDLIFE SAFE.

Poison baits are often flavored or scented like food. This poses life-threatening risks to children if they are accidentally consumed. Pets and wildlife, such as owls, hawks and bobcats, are also sickened and often die when they feed directly on the bait, or when they receive secondary poisoning by eating a poisoned rodent.

From Can I? to i-Can!™ A mindset of

REMOVE RODENT SHELTER, FOOD AND WATER. Keep food in the refrigerator or in puncture-proof containers with tight-fitting lids. Do not leave pet food out overnight. Remove rodent habitat like ivy and debris, and store lumber away from structures at least 18 inches above the ground. Keep vegetation at least three feet away from buildings. Clean up over-ripe fruit off the ground. BLOCK POINTS OF ENTRY. Sprinkle baby powder or flour along suspected areas to detect rodent tracks. Mice can squeeze through openings as small as a pencil diameter. Stuff scouring pads and copper mesh into large gaps and seal holes with cement, spackle or caulk. Use door sweeps and weather stripping for doors and windows. IF ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY, use snap traps properly-sized for the rodent problem you have. Bait with peanut butter and place traps in active rodent areas with the trigger facing the wall and out-of-reach from kids, pets and wildlife. Never use glueboards. They are inhumane, can easily harm other animals, and may result in having to address a still-living but trapped animal. SECURE DEAD RODENTS, nests and droppings in a sealed plastic bag and dispose in the outdoor trash. Wear rubber gloves and wipe all surfaces with hydrogen peroxide or other disinfectant.
