Part of the shipyard is used in the design

The Musical Cultural Centre is located in “La Punta – Callao” in a former shipyard near Peru’s main port. The lack of public space and infrastructure to host all kinds of artistic events in the area are the main reasons for this proposal. The project seeks to give an adequate infrastructure for leisure, recreational and cultural activities as well as to allow pedestrian traffic along the shoreline. To give program to the main square, the building has a solid first floor, and a third witch hangs on top of the second one with the help of big metal frames. This idea comes from a process that happens meters away, in Lima’s main port: El Callao. Big red metal cranes move containers from and into boats. The same structural idea is used in the cultural centre to get rid of all columns that can affect the space in the second floor. The project intends to harbour the hundreds of artistic events, such as concerts and festivals, which now a days are carried out in schools backyards or sport stadiums. EXTERIOR PERSPECTIVE

Taking into account the reality of Callao now a day, a project of this magnitude is essential. Present day leaders know of this necessities but not how to beat them. The Musical Cultural Centre would be part of Callao’s actual urban plan, which unifies the main public spaces of all districts using pedestrian roads. It will function as a catalyser in the area and give the promenade going along the seafront the program it has always longed. The area would have the public space that is needed, and concerts or festivals have now got an adequate space to perform. During summer the main square turns into a spectacle of water fountains that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. They can also be part of the project sea pools that help maintain a connection between the sea and de building. EXTERIOR PERSPECTIVE - third level

EXTERIOR ISOMETRY

The structure is the same as the one used in the nearby port. Metal beams go from frame to frame. Metallic tensioners are used to carry equal beams at a lower level. The space in between them is then closed using wood planks through the outside and inside to ensure the look of a closed container.

PROJECT SECTION

The project consists of four main multiple use rooms that hang from the metal frames. Beneath them are two outdoor plazas and service areas. In the first floor we encounter the administration area and the axis of the cultural area of the building, the library, which connects to the level of the sea pools underneath. As important as the previous areas, is the auditorium, which has its own entry.

SECUNDARY BUILDING GIVES PROPORTION TO THE PROJECT

The majority of buildings in the historic centre of the city are inaccessible due to the deterioration of them or because they are own by a private party. The only place were people are in contact with them is the street. After dozens of mappings it is decided to locate the project in between one main avenue and a smaller street. The first one has a metropolitan scale and the second one a bigger relation with the neighbourhood.

EXTERIOR PERSPECTIVE - from avenue

The project generates a plaza between to buildings, one more important than the other. The first one responds to a metropolitan scale by looking at the avenue. From the central plaza you enter the different levels through an electric staircase passing through different scenarios, visuals and dynamics. The project makes the travel, a learning experience. INTERIOR PERSPECTIVE

The main building private areas are established looking at the avenue because it is the noisiest zone and the side with the largest transit of people. Public areas surround the interior plaza and it is there where the life of the project takes place. The secondary buildings functions as an anchor and gives the whole proposal the correct proportions. The Centre of Heritage Preservation is a building needed in the city centre. It is architecture used to protect other architecture. A building whose main task is to safeguard the life of the city’s heritage. By using architecture the right way, it gives an otherwise highly dense area, the public space it seeks.

FIRST FLOOR

The project is located next to an old market that because of lack of regulation has become insecure and without any free space. The design of the project tries to help this market, giving some space for merchants to cell their goods across the street as well as giving a public space for the people that visit the place as well as the ones that already live in Surquillo. An “L shaped building is design, that hides in its interior a public square. The program in its 2 first levels would function as part of the market.

SECOND FLOOR

The design tries to avoid the user entering the market to buy and then go home straight away. The public space is available 24/7 and cafeterias and restaurants around it serve as attractions that make the space successful. From the third floor onwards the apartment section starts. They are divided in two, three, or four bedrooms. With this project, a whole area of the city will be reformed.

San Pedro de Lloc is a town north of Lima in Peru. “El Algarrobal” is a portion of desert that has started to be eaten by the nearby town growth. The only things worth keeping in the area are the trees that already exist and use them as protection from an equatorial sun. Using the level difference and existing trees, an urban plan is carried out, putting emphasis in the design of the main public spaces and roads to and from it. Each house will have its own yard at a different level from the road and protected from the sun. The difference in level continues and differentiates the public playground as well. Artificial lighting and public furniture is also taken into account.
