Welcome HURRICANE PARTY By the time this issue hits stands, it will have been almost ten months since Hurricane Matthew roared through the Lowcountry, bringing with him heavy winds and rain. The early October storm caused evacuations up and down the barrier islands and put a halt on many weddings along the coast. A handful of brave couples were able to work with their vendors to make some last minute modifications and move forward without canceling (see Julia & Mike's story on page 25), and others chose to reschedule their big days. While some couples’ wedding weekends weren’t directly impacted, the damage that occurred to local venues, roads, and hotels left its mark on everyone. But throughout it all, it didn’t stop couples, the wedding community, and their guests from powering on. Couples turned to their vendors to navigate their new options… and, as you’ll see in this issue, their vendors delivered. Kate & Nick (page 78), who pushed their Fripp Island wedding back three weeks due to considerable damage on the island, served “Hurricanes” as their specialty drink as an ode to the powerful storm. And to that we say – “Touche!” If there are any lessons to be learned from October 2016, it’s that selecting an experienced vendor team will always be key to a successful wedding, and insuring your assets should be one of your first priorities.

Real Advice

Get the scoop from these recently minted Mrs. who are divulging what they loved, what they didn’t, and how you can make your wedding memorable. “Try to stay calm. If you are a detail-oriented person like me, enjoy every minute, even if there are little hiccups. The day/night goes by so fast, even if you have a 9 hour celebration like ours, it’s never long enough. You will never again have all the people you love, celebrating with you, in one room.” -Ashley Pennington Shinta

“Consider hiring a wedding planner. Our wedding planner (Posh Petals & Pearls) was amazing and such an incredible help throughout the whole process. I cannot imagine having done it without her. She took care of everything from the beginning to the very last detail.” -Brooke Tucker Sumner

“Keep things in perspective. You want everything to be perfect on that day and inevitably something will go wrong, or won’t be exactly the way you imagined it. Just roll with it. What matters in the end are the memories that you make and the commitment that you and your husband are making to one another.” -Megan Hayes Shah “First, I’d tell anyone getting married to make sure they have a good photographer AND videographer. It really is worth the money to have both if you can manage it within your budget. Look at samples of their work to make sure their style matches yours. I’ve had a few friends hire just because of a big name or a low price and end up unhappy with the result.” -Ashton Merrell King

IT‘S ALL IN THE

Details From flower girls to live event paintings and floral chandeliers, we’ve rounded up our favorite Lowcountry details.

Ceremony Style - Large umbrellas shaded the crowd from the sun at Nicole & Ben’s Lowndes Grove ceremony while adding a romantic touch to the stylish decor. Image via Gideon Photography.

11

Bridesmaids Reveal - It’s one thing to surprise your groom but why not your best gals? We love how Kate suited up privately before a big reveal to her bridesmaids. Their reaction was priceless! Image via JB Marie Photography. Swings - We go crazy for a good lounge set up but why not step it up with a pair of swings? A Charleston Bride flanked the dance floor with two handmade swings for Nicole & Ben’s big day. Image via Gideon Photography.

Floral Chandelier - A trend we sure can get behind! Floral chandeliers make the ultimate focal point for your reception decor and this stunner by Branch Design Studio at Maggie & Kevin’s Thomas Bennett House wedding is no different. Image via Magnolia Photography. Local Brews - To add some local flavor to their Boone Hall wedding, Bailey & Matt arranged for the Palmetto Brewing Co. beer truck to serve their guests. Floral Install - A Charleston Bride teamed up with Stephanie Gibbs Events to design a show-stopping, “Love Never Fails” floral install over the head table for Andrew & Elaina’s Cedar Room wedding. The extravagant centerpiece set the stage for the joyous occasion. Image by Shannon Michele Photography. A Private Moment - Amy & Jonathan stole a few minutes alone during their Boone Hall reception with a private dinner table in the courtyard. It gave the newlyweds a chance to take it all in as they had a bite to eat before re-joining their guests. Image by Jarrad Lister.

First Look - If you’re questioning whether or not to do a first look, this shot might just tip the scale. Kate & Alex, who tied the knot at The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Savannah, GA, met for an intimate moment in the square and we adore how JB Marie Photography captured the anticipation. A Signature Piece - Maggie & Kevin commemorated their Thomas Bennett House wedding in true style by commissioning a live event painting from Wed on Canvas. The finished products, which tend to capture a couple’s ceremony or first dance, will be a lovely addition to any home and will entertain guests throughout the evening as they keep tabs on the progress.. 13

Flower Grannys - It’s important to remember that you can customize the details of your wedding to include the most important people in your life. Stephanie & Robert did just that for their Lafayette Square ceremony when they bucked tradition and tapped their grandmothers with the task of flower girl-ing down the aisle. We couldn’t love it anymore. Image via Chris Kruger Photography. Greenery - If flowers aren’t your thing, don’t fret. Skipping blooms for straight greenery makes a serious statement like these bridesmaids’ bouquets from Charleston Blooms for Bailey & Matthew’s Boone Hall wedding. Image via JoPhoto.

Flower Girls - The precious flower girls for Andrew & Elaina’s wedding skipped the typical basket for adorable heart wands. They paired their greenery with blush colored, fairy-like dresses for the cutest (flower) girl squad we’ve seen! Image by Shannon Michele Photography. Daddy’s Girl - It’s no secret we love the idea of a big reveal but the notion of a father-daughter first look is just the sweetest. Chat with your photographer and planner to make sure you set aside time for a special moment with your dad. Image via Magnolia Photography

14

Custom Invitations - Bride Bailey created her own invitations by hand to evoke the rustic, yet elegant vibe she were hoping to achieve. The custom design also included floral details to set the stage for the bloom-filled affair at The Legare Waring House. Image via Aaron and Jillian Photography.

“There is something so nostalgic about the carefree days of summer as a child. I have never even been to summer camp, but there is something I always love about watching movies in that genre. Perhaps it's the camaraderie or the freedom of the great outdoors that help evoke the feeling of escape that we all long for. I thought a summer camp setting, à la Troop Beverly Hills or The Parent Trap, would be the perfect tie-in for a weekend of sisterhood that comes along with a bachelorette party. A camper's uniform adds to the sense of togetherness that is similar to what you experience with your bridal party. I also love the classic colors that summer camp makes me envision—those bold primary colors are always in style.”

LIZ‘S PARTY PLANNING TIPS

l

When you're corralling a group of gals for a weekend, or even just an afternoon, it's always great to have a few staples on hand. l Refreshments & Activities are all it takes to make guests feel special. Serving a specialty coffee cocktail or DIY mimosa station adds a sense of celebration to your weekend. l Offering games is a wonderful way for girls in a bridal party who don't know each other to bond. Simple things like a donut eating contest, playing croquet, or an old school game of capture the flag can help your gals connect. l Gifting your bridesmaids is one place in the budget where you’ll want to make extra room. By the end of the wedding, it’s easy for your wedding party to rack up a hefty bill to attend your big day, from travel and lodging to taking time off work. Go all out for them because you know your day wouldn’t be nearly as great without your girl gang by your side.

22

To celebrate the outdoors, Liz called on the team from Frampton’s Flowers to add their signature floral touch to the tablescape. Woodsy arrangements of wildflowers and local foliage lined the all-white table in white birch vases. To tie in the scenery, Melissa Bowman of The Blue Root, suggested using lily pads from the pond as chargers to spruce up the white plates—it was the perfect accent to the rustic design. Blue napkins sat at each place setting where teepee place cards by The Town Serif (to echo the fabulous teepee from Indah Events) greeted each member of the troop. “I wanted to keep everything pretty neutral and have the pops of color come in the colorful Le Creuset dishes and the adorable hand lettered teepees,” said Liz. As a way to say thanks, The Blue Root whipped up locally-inspired gifts for the girls. An aloe plant (just in case the ladies needed some post-sun relief), specialty coffee, a ‘happy campers’ mug and eye mask were all included in the wooden boxes. “It’s all in the presentation,” notes Liz, “Offering gift items in such a nice vessel, like these wooden boxes, is a great way to make your girls feel extra special.” The finishing touch, each gal received a gingham neck scarf, Liz’s version of a “modern day friendship bracelet” to sport for the weekend of fun.

TIPS FROM THE

PROFESSIONALS We asked a few Lowcountry photographers to share their tips on how you can help your photographer expertly capture your big day. Here’s what they had to say…

“Work with your planner, florist, and cake designer to set up the reception space as early as possible prior to your ceremony. Having the space ready to photograph one hour prior to the ceremony is ideal so that your photographer has plenty of time to photograph those beautifully designed details before guests enter the space and while the light is still bright outside.” -Ava Moore Photography

“A couple should lookup the time the sun will set before finalizing their ceremony time, and then consult with their photographer, because sunset light varies depending on what part of town the venue is located.” -Priscilla Thomas Photography

“During the bride and groom portraits, let yourself feel free to be exactly who you are with your significant other. In that moment, your photographer is your biggest fan and wants to capture those genuine, unique-to-you moments.” -Alex Thorton Photography

“Be sure to send a wedding invitation to your photographer! Often times the invitation is a forgotten detail but an important one that needs to be documented, too. To make sure it is protected, package it in another thick mailer so it doesn’t get ruined in the mail.”” -Philip Casey Photography

“If you're thinking about renting a vintage car on your wedding day, consider reserving it early in the day and using it for photos before your ceremony or anytime before sunset! Because let's be honest...photos like THIS are so much prettier than anything captured at the end of the night in the dark, after hours of drinking & dancing” -Dana Cubbage Weddings

Hurricane Matthew

JULIA & MICHAEL OCTOBER 6, 2016

Charleston, South Carolina Julia & Mike originally planned to host 75 guests on Gold Bug Island for their October 8, 2016 wedding. They loved the Island’s laid-back atmosphere, views of the Intracoastal Waterway and, in case it rained, they could always move the party inside to the clubhouse. But as their wedding week neared, it became clear that Hurricane Matthew would be making his mark on the South Carolina shoreline. With the help of family, friends, and their event planner, Danielle Snider of MI Event Services, they quickly brainstormed ideas for a Plan B, C, D, and on down the line. Julia’s mom suggested her quilt store in Downtown Summerville, others thought a re-scheduled Spring wedding might be the answer, but Julia & Mike were eager to be married and hopeful they could find a way to proceed as scheduled. When it was evident that a Saturday wedding was just not possible–on Tuesday, October 4th, South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley declared a state of emergency and ordered evacuations along the coastline–a close friend, whose home overlooked the marsh in West Ashley, offered up his picturesque backyard to move up their celebration to Thursday the 6th. Ironically, the couple had originally tossed around the idea of having a reception at his house. “We thought better of it because there wasn’t a good rain plan. Ha!” remembers Julia. With a newly schedule date and some mere hours to plan, Danielle Snider went into full

Hurricane Plan-mode working to relieve the stress while also delivering the Lowcountry wedding Julia & Mike had envisioned. To the pair’s surprise, most of their vendors were on board for the change of plans and it was full steam ahead for an October 6th wedding. With the new date, each vendor did their best to deliver a special day for the couple, but it wasn’t without some creative problem-solving. Eager to assist but finding it difficult to order the food from their original menu, B Gourmet Catering’s solution was to re-purpose food that had been ordered for another wedding—one that had been canceled due to the storm—and design an entirely different menu for the couple. The new menu would change their original plans of stations into an intimate seated dinner. The alternate menu also meant their original floor plan would needed to be modified to accommodate the additional seating. Snyder Events, ever the helpful vendor, adjusted their order to fit the re-worked needs and prepared it for a Wednesday night delivery. The early drop-off date meant the items were set and ready, so that when Julia & Mike arrived on-site Thursday to get ready, they were in awe of the serene backdrop and how seamlessly everything came together. After grabbing a few beers, the couple set-off to get dressed separately before their guests arrived. Julia dazzled in the Kensington skirt from a Project Runway (and College of Charleston) alum.

26

“After searching all over the internet for non-traditional wedding dresses,” says Julia, “I fell in love with this two-piece number.” The much sought-after gown was a Carol Hannah design from Southern Protocol in Charleston that boasted a silk tank with a blush draped linen skirt with layers of champagne. It offered Julia the dream gown she never knew she was looking for. Originally, she had booked a hair and makeup stylist to finish off her bridal look, but the stylist’s evacuation forced her sister-in-law to step in and handle the duties. In keeping with her whimsical vibe, she added soft waves, natural makeup, and strappy mint sandals to round out her look. As effortlessly as their rain plan came together, so did the celebration. Guests began to file in as the couple, who had just wrapped up their first look, mingled with the crowd before kicking off the ceremony. “This remarkable backyard, had this perfectly secluded little area that was surrounded by greenery and had an altar area designed by sabal palms,” remembers Danielle. “We added the Marie Whitewashed Dining Chairs from Snyder Events, and it created such a vintage ceremony look. No other decor was really needed as the space was beautiful to stand alone.” As an added personal touch, the home’s owner, Barclay McCurdy, presided over their vows and after they said, ‘I do,’ it was time to celebrate! To create a cozy space, the yard was framed by pallet couches to form relaxing lounge areas where guests could enjoy views of the marsh. Driftwood farm tables were topped with rustic arrangements in birch wood containers and while they weren’t the blooms they had originally discussed—the flowers hadn’t been delivered, so Heidi Inabinet of On a Limb Floral Studio used what she had on hand—the slightly darker color scheme of orange roses, ranunculus, veronica, succulents and peach garden roses created the perfect complement to the décor. www.alowcountrywed.com

JULIA WILSON MESECK “I was in complete denial about the hurricane. It wasn’t until the Governor called for the lane reversals that I came to terms with it. I thought we were going to have to cancel the whole thing. But it really just came together perfectly. I couldn’t have asked for a better wedding.”

“She sent me a picture of what she ‘made do’ with and I started crying,” Julia said of the centerpieces. “They were exactly what I wanted.” To enhance the intimate setting, string lights were hung throughout the trees to add a soft glow. “By the time it was finished, it really looked like a fairytale, and I could not have been happier with the end result,” said Danielle. The last-minute changes meant guests spent the evening dining on a duo of filet mignon and Lowcountry crab cakes accompanied by mashed potatoes and asparagus while sipping on their choice of beer, wine and Lowcountry Lemonade. The bartending staff had evacuated, so the wedding planner’s husband stepped up to the plate and filled in as bartender for the evening. Their original baker was unable to provide their cupcakes, but morning of the wedding the florist found an unused wedding cake for 40 guests and, as their original guest list of 75 had dwindled down in size, they ended up having exactly 40 guests in attendance and the perfect cake from Delicious Dessert to feed their friends and family. As the evening came to a close—the reception ended at 9 o’clock so guests could get home safely—guests released Chinese Wish Lanterns with well wishes for a happy marriage and a peaceful hurricane! PROTECTING YOURSELF FROM THE “WHAT IFS” While most couples will never use their insurance, disasters do happen, so make sure to properly secure your investment. It’s common practice to buy insurance for the big purchases in life—car, house, boat, engagement ring. But have you ever thought about wedding insurance? The average wedding costs upwards of $30,000, and when you begin factoring in the “what ifs” like natural disasters, illness, vendor issues, and the unknown, isn’t it downright imperative to protect your wedding day, too? The relatively small expense ranges in price depending on the coverage you secure and will offer you and your family the peace of mind you’re looking for.

WHAT IS WEDDING INSURANCE? As the saying goes, accidents happen when you least expect them, With wedding insurance you and your family’s investment will be protected from situations beyond your control. Liability insurance (which most venues require) will protect you from any financial liability if an accident occurs during your ceremony or reception. This will safeguard you in the event the venue is damaged, a guest is injured, or if there are any alcohol-related incidents throughout the celebration. The second option is cancellation and postponement protection. In the wake of Hurricane Matthew and the 1,000year flood, cancellation and postponement protection continues to gain popularity in the Lowcountry. If factors beyond your control force you to cancel or postpone your wedding, this coverage will reimburse you for the total cost of your wedding expenses. This does not, however, foot the bill if you have a change of heart. It doesn’t stop with just liability, cancellation and postponement protection plans. You can tailor your policy to include other coverages, such as loss of deposit, special attire, gifts, and photography & video to secure all aspects of your wedding day. Additionally, you can extend your coverage to include any events associated with your wedding day within 48 hours of the main event, like your welcome party, rehearsal dinner, and morning-after brunch.

WHY PURCHASE INSURANCE? The Lowcountry is a hotspot for destination weddings, and while plenty of couples are local to the barrier islands, it doesn’t mean their guest list is. In the past two years, we’ve experienced countless tropical storms, historic flooding, and Hurricane Matthew, all of which have quickly impacted travel to the area. In the face of a natural disaster, insurance gives you the flexibility to consider postponing your celebration to a new date when guests can easily make the trek. These extreme weather conditions also caused severe damage to local venues. Some of the Lowcountry’s most-sought after locales were forced to close their doors due to flooding, power outages, and down trees which made it unsafe to host events. With insurance, you can recoup the full cost of your wedding expenses (minus the deductible). This includes non-refundable deposits, catering, musicians, invites and more. While these plans will cover you in a doomsday situation, they also have your back for smaller incidents. Consider this: you slip into your custom gown for bridal portraits a few months before your big day. While you’re on-site at a beautiful plantation, you rip the train of your dress ruining the expensive lace and intricate beading. Fortunately, the right insurance will cover a replacement dress in time for your wedding day.

ADDITIONAL OPTIONS GIFTS - Whether they’ve been delivered directly to your home, or placed at the gift table the night of your reception, you should consider insuring these valuable items and keepsakes on the off-chance an un-welcomed party-goer runs off with your presents. PHOTOS - Considered the most valuable memento from your big day, we always suggest brides insure their photographs. Policies can cover lost, damaged, not properly developed or stolen negatives. Some will even pay to retake the images with a new photographer, cake and flowers. VIDEO - Much like your photos, insuring your wedding day video could result in re-filming the event if the original footage was lost or damaged.

ATTIRE - Wedding gowns come with a sizable price tag. In the event of a pre-wedding mishap (think lost in baggage claim or your bridal boutique closed up shop), your insurance will cover the cost of a brand new gown. RENTALS - As you begin working with your event planner to design your wedding day decor, you’ll soon find that a growing list of equipment will be needed to execute the day you envisioned. So, if a tent, tables, chairs, linens, vintage furniture, and a generator (just to name a few!) find their way to your rental order, coverage is key in case any items need to be repaired or replaced.

DANIELLE SNIDER MI Event Services @mieventscharleston “My best piece of advice is to purchase wedding insurance. During Hurricane season it can, at the very least, relieve a bride of the financial worry associated with a natural disaster. No wedding insurance can relieve the emotional stress, but hopefully that is where your wedding planner can step in to help.”

WHEN TO PURCHASE INSURANCE? The sooner the better! The minute you start swiping cards and writing checks is the minute you put yourself at risk. Let’s say you sign a contract and put a deposit down on a venue. A few weeks later you find out your venue is unexpectedly going out of business and, not only are you forced to find a new venue, but you’re also out a hefty deposit. With wedding insurance, you’ll get your deposit back.

WHAT'S THE COST? Wedding insurance is relatively inexpensive when you consider the big purchases you’ll be making throughout the planning process. Before you pull the trigger, reach out to your venue and vendors to determine the scale of their coverage as to avoid any overlap. Once this is determined, select a plan based on your total wedding budget so you’ll be fully covered if faced with disaster. Liability plans start as low as $75, and cancellation and postponement plans average $200-$400 for most celebrations. SAMANTHA ANDERSON Samantha Anderson Events www.samanthaandersonevents.com “Traditionally dotted with linen suits and seashell décor, I wanted to challenge myself to re-imagine the accustomed look of a beach wedding. Wanting a design that was equal parts fresh, romantic, and coastal, I chose Niagara Blue and Azalea Pink as the main shades of our color palette. From there, we gathered an A-team of creative vendors to make this dreamy, seaside soirée come to life.”

34

The relaxing coastline of Hilton Head Island called us to The Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa for an effortless, seaside afternoon with a soft, neutral color palette. A whitewashed farm table topped with a striped runner set the mood for the airy design from Samantha Anderson Events where coastal-inspired place settings sat atop woven hyacinth place mats. In the center, a concrete pedestal was filled to the brim with a textured arrangement of James Story orchids, delphinium, light blue muscari, garden roses, ranunculus, scabiosa, huckleberry, parrot tulips and white lilac.

White linen napkins, watercolor place cards and driftwood accents completed the tablescape. The ladies, dressed in their resort-style best, donned strapless Plum Pretty Sugar dresses in varying patterns that were paired with hammered gold earrings and dainty pearl necklaces from Dee Ruel. Each bridesmaid carried garden-style bouquets of the same soft blooms, tied together with a deep blue ribbon. To finish off the oceanfront soirĂŠe, the lovely bride wore a flowing Lea-Ann Belter gown with layers of silk organza that tied in the back with a flowing blush bow.

“Coastal elegance was the goal,” said Samantha. “I wanted to incorporate nods to the seaside, but wanted an overall look that was sophisticated and timeless. The plush, neutral dining chairs and handmade-style china from EventWorks, coupled with the subtly striped Turkish towel runner and Niagara Blue candles helped us achieve this look for the tablescape. Day-of, we we’re lucky enough to stumble upon the perfectly sized pieces of driftwood to enhance the beauty of the

brilliant centerpiece designed by Branch Design Studio. Inspired by the ocean water, SAS-E Ink designed a watercolor invitation suite featuring floral in stunning Azalea Pink. As a warm welcome, the gift bags from The Blue Root featured local, Lowcountry treats. To tie the whole design together, we selected a variety of soft, floral patterned bridesmaids dresses by Pretty Plum Sugar. The finished product was exactly what I had envisioned: a fresh take on the standard seaside nuptials.”

Alanna & Thomas April 23, 2016

DUNES GOLF & BEACH CLUB MYRTLE BEACH, SOUTH CAROLINA

Alanna & Thomas’ 11-year love story began at a fraternity event in Nashville, TN. The two, who were both studying engineering at Vanderbilt University, were active members of the Greek life community when sparks flew that fateful evening. Over the years, as their love continued to grow, the wanderlust duo took countless vacations around the world, but a trip to St. Lucia, where Thomas proposed, was their most memorable. First on their list was securing a wedding destination and Thomas’ hometown of Myrtle Beach, SC fit the bill perfectly. The coastal Carolina town offered beautiful Spring weather and would serve as spot they could continue to visit throughout their lives. With the city confirmed, the venue was next, and what an easy decision it was. The Dunes Golf & Beach Club, with its sweeping ocean views, was the ideal spot for their late April affair. After trying on upwards of 60 gowns, Alanna finally found her dream dress at Ever After in Miami, FL.. The off-the-shoulder, Carolina Herrera gown featured exquisite lace detailing and a soft, scalloped neckline that she accessorized on her wedding day with a low side up-do by Stox & Co.

46

As for her six bridesmaids, they continued the chic trend by wearing strapless dresses with a white bodice and black skirt with an asymmetrical hem. Hoping to maximize their reception time with their guests, Alanna met Thomas, dressed in a classic black tuxedo, for an intimate first look and pictures in the courtyard prior to the ceremony. As guests arrived, they were ushered to the lawn where an all-white arbor adorned with soft draping, orchids, roses, and hydrangeas stood against the Atlantic Ocean backdrop. As the processional began, Strand Strings serenaded the crowd as Alanna strolled down the aisle, arm-in-arm with her father. The couple were married by Thomas’ long-time family minister, Bobby Wilkes, in a personalized ceremony as a flock of seagulls passed by overhead. With the help of Della Ramsey Weddings, the couple designed an elegant reception space with a traditional black and white color palette and soft pink details. The tables were set with luxurious, textured linens and topped with centerpieces of varying heights overflowing with lush white and blush blooms from Little Shop of Flowers, all highlighted by the glow of candlelight. Guests sipped on the couples’ personalized specialty drinks—a Negroni for Thomas and Champagne with a splash of St. Germain for Alanna—before partaking in a tasty menu of Mediterranean and Lowcountry specialties, including: short ribs, crab cakes, and lamb sliders. In lieu of the standard wedding cake, the couple enlisted Croissant Bistro & Bakery to wow their guests with a full dessert spread complete with miniature sweets. The crowd took to the dance floor where the celebration continued as Alanna’s father showed off his moves with some traditional Greek dancing.

Jessica & John NOVEMBER 5, 2016

DEBORDIEU CLUB GEORGETOWN, SOUTH CAROLINA

Jessica & John met on a blind date and to say there was an instant connection is an understatement. The conversation flowed so easily that night that after a few hours they finally ordered an appetizer! “I didn’t want the night to end,” remembers Jessica. “Because we were having such an incredible time, we closed the place down.” By the end of the first week, they had already gone out four times and Jessica was thinking she may have found “Mr. Right.” After a magical courtship, John surprised Jessica with a “spectacular” weekend in Blowing Rock, North Carolina that he kicked off with a pre-dinner proposal. Neither wanted a long engagement, and both loved the idea of a Fall wedding. So, with less than six months to spare, the couple booked The DeBordieu Club for an early November date and quickly started planning. Located in Georgetown, South Carolina, the club provided Jessica & John with the coastal backdrop they fancied and allowed the couple to utilize the entire grounds for the long weekend’s festivities. Jessica drew inspiration from a picture of a single bouquet that embodied all of her favorite colors—cream, gold, pale yellow, orange, peach, green, and copper—and knew the vibrant palette would enhance the deep plum color that would be the focal point of the evening. Event Planner Della Ramsey worked closely with the couple to turn their colorful inspiration and their theme of “happy love” into the memorable Lowcountry wedding they imagined. Jessica spent the morning in a villa with her bridesmaids where Stox & Co. was on hand for hair and makeup. Her six bridesmaids suited up in long chiffon Bill Levkoff dresses in a wonderful shade of eggplant plum that were paired with charming bouquets of roses, ranunculus, garden roses, and berries. With her grandmother on hand to

52

help with accessories, Jessica dazzled as she stepped into her glamorous Winnie Couture gown. Her hair, fashioned in a loose up-do, completed her look. The beautiful bride spent a few special moments sharing hugs with her dad and brother before meeting John, dressed in a charcoal grey suit, for a private first look and pictures before the ceremony. Two colorful Fall-inspired arrangements welcomed guests to the lawn where they were seated in white chairs under the oak tree. A harpist strummed “Canon in D” as Jessica and her father made their way down the rose petal-covered aisle where John awaited them. Her bouquet was wrapped in her grandmother’s heirloom handkerchief which was edged with a slim teal ribbon and an ovarian cancer pendant, as a nod to her late mother. After the couple exchanged their vows, guests were served champagne with a pomegranate garnish while the newlyweds took time for the last few pictures before the sun set. Under the sailcloth tent guests focused their attention on the large, leafy tree which was surrounded by a four-sided bar designed by Blossoms Events with mirrored fronts and a trim of locally harvested oyster shells. Wooden toppers in fumed grey satin dressed the tables which were set with elegant grey dining chairs and lush garden-style centerpieces. Fairy lights and lanterns were hung in the trees and a series of frosted, patina, and copper votives added to the overall glow. Custom lounge sections were set with hand-stained couches, coffee tables, saddle-stitched rugs, and decorative pillows to create a cozy atmosphere for guests to mingle. As the reception began, Mr. & Mrs. Phelps took to the dance floor for their first dances which they followed by showing their school spirit. In true tradition, Jessica invited her teammates and coach of the Wake Forest Cheer/Dance team to the floor as the Demon Deacons fight song played. Not to be out done, John and his Tar Heel faithful followed by belting out the UNC fight song. “I wanted the dance floor to be packed all night and this definitely helped set the tone,” said Jessica. Guests dined on multiple food stations including the crowd favorite—the raw bar—in addition to the shrimp & grits bar and other Southern specialties. Jessica & John had a hand in designing their 4-tiered cake from Incredible Edibles where cream rose petals trimmed in copper spilled down the front of the cake. At the end of the evening, a well-stocked vintage Packard awaited the couple as they hugged their nearest and dearest before heading off to an oceanfront villa to enjoy a nightcap as husband & wife.

They kept with tradition and skipped a first look and instead opted to see each other for the first time at The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. Ashley tapped her younger brother with the task of walking her down the aisle. “This was very important to me and something I wanted us to share together,” recalls Ashley. “He is seven and a half years younger than me but we have always had a special bond.” The anticipation was worth the wait and Ashley met Justin at the end of long aisle where MAY 14, 2016 the Bishop of Charleston, The Most Reverend Robert E. Guglielmone, officiated over the ceremony. Once they were pronounced husband & wife, guests made the short walk down Broad Street to Hibernian Hall where they were welcomed by delicious passed hors d’oeuvres from Cru Catering, including braised short rib tostada, fried green tomatoes with pimento cheese, and apple smoked bacon-wrapped quail. All the Ashley was a senior at the University of South Carolina and Justin had just returned while, guests sipped the couple’s specialty drink—Tipsy Tea—a sweet tea vodka and home from a tour in Afghanistan when mutual friends introduced them in the Summer of lemonade beverage adorned with gold and white striped straws. After spending 2011. A few short weeks later, on July 7th, they went on their first official date and have time with their bridal party for post-ceremony pictures, the couple made their grand been together ever since. To make it forever, Justin took Ashley to Halls Chophouse— entrance to Hibernian Hall as two bagpipers bellowed their Highlands tune. But masked as an anniversary dinner—where she was surprised to find a diamond ring on before guests were invited upstairs, event designer Lindsey Shanks snuck Ashley and the dessert menu! her mom upstairs to see how their years of designing and planning had come together. The future bride & groom knew exactly what they wanted for their May 14, 2016 “I will never forget what it looked like at that very moment,” remembers Ashley. “Time wedding—a traditional Catholic ceremony followed by a classic Charleston reception stood still and I couldn’t wait for Justin to see how it turned out.” with timeless décor. So the pair, who have a deep appreciation for the history and Guests moved upstairs for the formal dinner reception where they first laid eyes on the charm of Charleston, invited 225 guests to join them for a weekend of love at the white-inspired design. “A Charleston Bride blew our reception out of the water,” two of the Holy City’s most notable venues—The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and said Ashley. Rectangular and round tables were dressed in crisp white linens while Hibernian Hall. With the help of Lindsey Shanks of A Charleston Bride, their elegant farm tables were draped with linen runners, and all were surrounded by gold chivari wedding tied together Ashley’s white color palette with modern metallic touches for a chairs with white cushions. The tasty feast finished on a high note with the cake, a creation in its was made of Mikado silk and boasted a three-foot cathedral train and detailed buttons own right from Jim Smeal, which echoed the lace on Ashley’s veil and incorporated down the back. Megan & Aarjave NOVEMBER 12, 2016

THE gadsden house charleston, south carolina

Megan & Aarjave met while working at the same financial services firm in New York City and after a successful first date, they kept the momentum going with a second, third and fourth date all in the same week! They quickly realized that even though they came from different backgrounds on opposite corners of the globe (Aarjave from India and Megan from South Carolina), they both shared a deep love and appreciation of family. Fast forward three years later and Aarjave surprised Megan with a New York-style engagement along the banks of the Hudson River on a chilly October night. Megan, a Nichols, South Carolina native, knew her home state would offer the ideal backdrop for their destination weekend and the charming city of Charleston would serve as the hospitable host. After touring multiple plantations and venues, The Gadsden House finally won them over thanks to its elegant indoor & outdoor spaces and intimate feel. They worked with Lizz Luckhart Designs to construct an evening that paired a relaxed environment with the couple’s vision of a timeless design. They used a color palette of gold, marsala, deep green, pink, and peach to highlight The Gadsden House’s open-air courtyard and to provide an added pop of personality to the historic home.

62

As a way to connect their two families becoming one, Megan & Aarjave took pride in customizing their ceremony, starting with the officiant. “We wanted a personal connection to the person marrying us,” said Megan. So, much like the evening before— where Aarjave’s parents performed their Hindu ceremony—they tasked Megan’s cousin’s husband, Chris Poston, to preside over their Christian celebration. A blanket of lush petals coated the aisle as Megan made her entrance in a romantic Modern Trousseau design. She carried a lavish bouquet of bold blooms and greenery that was wrapped with a special memento—her late grandfather’s handkerchief. She joined Aarjave at the altar under a spectacular chandelier where Aarjave’s cousin and Megan’s aunt performed hand-selected readings before the pair exchanged beautifully written and honest vows. Once the ceremony concluded, the newlyweds (who had met for a first look earlier in the day in order to enjoy every moment of their reception) joined their guests for cocktail hour on the second-floor piazza where collard green wontons and buttermilk fried oysters from Cru Catering were passed. Tables were draped with cream linens and topped with wonderful jewel-toned centerpieces of dahlias, garden roses, ranunculus, rich greenery and hints of millet and pheasant feathers from Wimberly Fair. Instead of a seated dinner, they opted for a mix of Indian and Southern food stations to treat their guests to some of their favorite dishes. The menu included whole hog pulled pork with cornbread, palak paneer, roasted eggplant curry, basmati rice, naan, and handmade gnocchi with sage brown butter & tomatoes. Seersucker Sweets whipped up an extensive dessert spread starting with an impressive three-tiered, hand-piped cake, joined by Indian staples like coconut ladoos and rasgulla, as well as Southern sweets, such as salted dark chocolate pecan clusters and mini clementine pound cake donuts. Not wanting the night to end, the couple closed out the reception on the dance floor, (literally, they were the last two!) before grabbing an Uber and heading to a local King Street bar for the after-party.

Anna Beth & Adam september 24, 2016

pavilion at patriots point mount pleasant, South Carolina

Anna Beth & Adam met through a tried and true dating site but neither knew that their first date at a wine bar would be the start of a lifelong romance. Both had recently relocated to North Carolina—Anna Beth as an endocrinology fellow at Duke University and Adam after spending two years working abroad in Germany—when their instant connection led to a second date, and eventually a surprise proposal where Adam asked for Anna Beth’s hand in marriage while on a jog through The Duke Gardens. Anna Beth had always dreamed of a Charleston wedding, so she quickly turned to the internet to find a venue that checked all their boxes—something on the water for Adam, and a “big white tent” for Anna Beth. The Pavilion at Patriots Point seamlessly blended the two and laid the groundwork for their late September affair on the Charleston Harbor. With the venue secured and the date set, they called upon Chelsye Harp of Intrigue Design & Events to bring their floral-filled evening to life. Anna Beth decided to put her mother’s extensive succulent collection on display as the theme of the day’s décor, which also effortlessly doubled as her something borrowed. Branch Design Studio was tasked with mixing the décor staple with a sumptuous variety of pastel colors and textures, including greenery, berries, and gold painted thistles to enhance the light green hue of the succulents.

64

The bridal party looked modern and chic thanks to J. Crew, with the bridesmaids in varying styles of long chiffon dresses in a shade of dusty shale and the groomsmen in slim grey suits with striped ties from the Tie Bar. Adam stood out in a bright navy Hugo Boss suit with cognac leather accessories; but of course, Anna Beth stole the show in an elegant silk chiffon and lace gown by Lea-Ann Belter. Her updated look was completed with a half-up hairstyle with long waves and natural make up with a smoky eye, thanks to Paper Dolls Wedding Hair & Makeup. As the finishing touch for their bridal party, their bouquets and boutonnières featured succulents and lush blooms including antique garden roses, parrot tulips, ranunculus, and amaryllis. Even Gabby, the couple’s golden retriever, looked her best in a custom floral wreath. Anna Beth walked down the aisle with her father to a classic rendition of “Canon in D”—a traditional wedding song she adores—and met Adam between the trees where they exchanged vows. With the water in the background, the soft, airy mood continued as guests were escorted to the reception tent where tables outfitted with white and peach linens were topped with elegant gold chargers and flatware. Peach napkins presented the evening’s menu offerings from Cru Catering which boasted a cedar plank smoked salmon, jumbo shrimp, and garlic roasted Angus strip filet. Completing the romantic tablescapes were an assortment of gold lanterns, glass pedestal bowls and low floral arrangements with signature succulent accents. The white, three-tiered cake from DeClare Cakes, which was adorned with peach and pink flowers and seeded eucalyptus, gave guests the option of three tasty flavors—carrot, strawberry shortcake, and chocolate mousse. After the extravagant dinner and heartfelt speeches, DJ Rehab got the guests up and to the dance floor where they spent the rest of the evening dancing under the big white tent. After treating their crowd to Ben & Jerry’s ice cream for a late-night snack, the couple made their getaway in the refurbished BMW convertible, gifted to them by the groom’s uncle.

Kenly & Steve september 3, 2016

LOWNDES GROVE PLANTATION charleston, South Carolina

Steve is a diehard sports fan and when one of his teams—the Reds, Bengals or Fighting Irish—are playing, good luck getting his attention. “Luckily for me,” remembers Kenly, “none of his beloved teams were involved in the 2012 Super Bowl, and when we both attended a friend’s viewing party, I was able to successfully steal his attention from the game.” By the end of the evening, after hours of talking and laughing, they had made plans for their first official date. After a three-year courtship, Steve whisked Kenly off to the shores of Punta Mita, Mexico where he surprised her with a sunset proposal, to which she gleefully accepted. Shortly thereafter, they turned their attention to planning. The two had always enjoyed their annual trips to Charleston to visit Kenly’s aunt & uncle, and over the years, the Holy City had carved out a special place in their hearts. When it came time to decide on a locale, the nostalgic coastal town was at the top of their list. After a handful of venue tours, they settled on one of the East Coast’s most sought-after venues. “Lowndes Grove is like walking into a real-life fairy-tale,” said Kenly. “Between the draping live oak trees, historic 1786-era home and breathtaking 700-foot private dock extending in to the Ashley River, it was love at first sight.” With a light and ethereal aesthetic in mind, the couple brought on the team at Pure Luxe Bride to design a late Summer affair befitting of the glittering Southern plantation. With the color white as the foundation, they incorporated touches of blush, dusty green, and pops of gold to create Kenly’s glamorous vision.

66

After trying on multiple gowns, Kenly ultimately found her Anna Maier gown at Marina Morrison’s in San Francisco. It was made of white Duchess satin and the slim-fitting bodice was finished with an extravagant fluted trumpet skirt. She paired the Old Hollywood-inspired dress with loose, voluminous curls and a cathedral length veil for the ceremony. To match the romantic vibe, her bridesmaids wore airy, silk chiffon Amsale dresses in shades of blush or bellini. Steve and his groomsmen looked sharp in navy suits, cognac dress shoes and blush ties to match the bridesmaids. The ceremony took place on the lawn overlooking the Ashley River where live oak trees hung overhead. To help guests stay cool from the warm September temperatures, large patio umbrellas covered the crowd as Kenly & Steve exchanged their vows. To keep the focus on the picturesque setting, they kept décor minimal by adding small mercury glass vases with soft blooms along the aisle and a petal runner of white roses. During cocktail hour, guests chose between the couple’s two signature drinks— her French 75 and his Manhattan—as they enjoyed the relaxing river views. They snacked on fig & pancetta wrapped scallops and breaded artichoke hearts stuffed with Parmesan, while also indulging in a raw bar of oysters, shrimp, and crab salad cones. The reception tent was nothing short of a dream. As guests entered, they were wowed by a large crystal chandelier covered with white hydrangeas, fragrant roses and soft greenery that hung above the black & white checkered dance floor. The Bride & Groom’s chair backs were draped in a soft white fabric and tied with eucalyptus vines and pale pink blooms. In keeping with their soft vision, tables were set with crisp white linens and white chivari chairs. Pale pink napkins with sprigs of eucalyptus were wrapped around elegant gold-printed menu cards. Dinner included a light, summer salad followed by a lobster tail & filet duo served alongside Lowcountry risotto and an arugula and shaved asparagus salad. After everyone finished eating, The Emerald Empire Band called guests to the dance floor where the crowd remained until the very last dance. Guests were then invited to light sparklers and escort the newlyweds to a white Rolls Royce, ready to carry them to a life full of love, laughter and great dancing—just like their wedding day.

Y’all, I just love a trip to the Hilton Head Marriott Resort & Spa. It’s got that upbeat, easy-going beach vibe that’s perfect for families and guests of all ages. You have an immediate view of the ocean dotted with roofs of little tiki huts and cabanas by the pool as soon as you enter. Whether you’re into finding a quiet, sunny nook to get lost in your latest summer read or enjoying the fun poolside entertainment, the Marriott is an easy winner for a quick get-away or extended family fun. www.marriott.com/hhhgr

DINE

3.) Located on Skull Creek on the north end of the island, Hudson’s Seafood on the Docks is a favorite among locals and visitors alike. It’s one of the few truly waterfront places on the island and a magical place to catch the sunset. I also cannot speak highly enough of their service— they truly treat everyone of their patrons with a friendly Lowcountry welcome and act like they’re excited to see you as an old friend every time! www.hudsonsonthedocks.com 4.) People often wonder why I suggest Santa Fe Cafe, a Southwestern-inspired restaurant, when coming to the Lowcountry, but all it takes is one of their Cadillac margaritas on the upstairs porch while being serenaded by a Spanish guitar to figure out why. www.santafehhi.com

PLAY 1) When looking for a way to entertain visitors who need a break from the beach, I take them to Coligny Plaza. From the fun beach shops to the stylish boutiques (I just have to stop by Traveling Chic Boutique when I’m there), and the lively bars to the casual cafes, it’s an easy place to wander and catch lunch or happy hour, shop for gifts or a nice outfit for a date night, and enjoy local entertainment often found playing music or shows at the plaza stage. www.facebook.com/ColignyPlaza 2) I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the amazing opportunities to explore the outdoors here! Hilton Head truly has one of the most diverse and unique coastal environments, and Outside Hilton Head is one of its biggest advocates and stewards. They offer a range of excursions, from private boating experiences around the island to kayak tours, to get up close and personal with nature and wildlife. When the weekend weather is nice, it’s easy to pop by and rent a kayak or paddleboard if you just want some quiet time on the water. www.outsidehiltonhead.com

I am no stranger to the delight of retail therapy, but never have I experienced the real joy of shopping as I have at Louette Boutique! When I’m stumped for a cute, quirky gift or a fun card to send to friends (they have THE best stationery on the island), I know I can find it at Louette. Everything in the boutique is carefully curated for best quality and having a little “soul” – each piece of clothing, product, or piece has a story behind it. www.louetteboutique.com

Jessica & Michael november 12, 2016

LONG COVE club

hilton head island, south carolina Jessica said it best when she described her relationship with Michael as a “modern-day love story.” Both were recently out of long-term relationships when they tried their hand at online dating to slowly get back into the dating scene. Little did they know that marriage was in their future. In true New York City-fashion, their first date started with a trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and ended with a snowy stroll through Central Park. The couple later returned to Central Park where Michael popped the question on a beautiful Spring evening. They chose Long Cove Marina on Hilton Head Island, a place Jessica’s family has been visiting since she was young, to host their November 12th wedding. They worked with Leah McCarthy of Weddings with Leah to design an intimate evening rich in color for 80 of their nearest and dearest. “We let the fall season dictate our palette: we opted for rich autumnal hues and colors reflected in the Lowcountry landscape,” describes Jessica.

74

Her Sarah Janks dress, from Lovely Bride, featured a delicate overlay of intricate beading reminiscent of the night sky’s constellations. She paired the simple silhouette with an elbow-length, tulle veil and abundant bouquet of burgundy dahlias, cream and pale butter roses, and rich greenery. Both the bridesmaids and groomsmen wore navy, the ladies in long Amsale dresses of their preference, and Michael and the guys in sharp suits. Forgoing a first look, Jessica caught her first glimpse of Michael as she walked down the aisle to a string duet’s rendition of “Time After Time”—an ode to Michael’s love of 80’s music. They exchanged vows in front of a gnarly oak tree that overlooked Broad Creek. To accentuate the natural setting, they created an altar with an over-dyed area rug which was flanked by rustic lanterns and large sandstone urns chock-full of local foliage. Guests gathered for cocktail hour where Lowcountry cuisine was on full display with passed hors d’oeuvres of fried green tomato & pimento canapés and buttermilk ham biscuits. Three specialty cocktails were available at the bar—Michael’s pick, an IPA, Jessica’s Boulevardier and a cheeky original they dubbed the “Screw You, Matthew,” their version of a hurricane in honor of Hurricane Matthew who blew through the area just a few weeks prior. For dinner, guests sat at a mix of round and farm tables with rustic X-back chairs. August Floral Design spruced up the natural tabletops with garlands of greenery highlighted with bold blooms and fruit (pomegranates, figs, blackberries and pears) expertly tucked throughout. The round tables featured low, loose arrangements so guests could easily converse throughout dinner where a beef filet and shrimp Florentine stole the show. The evening ended on the dance floor where Michael put his signature stamp on the entertainment. He enlisted the Breakfast Club, an 80’s cover band, to handle the dance party—and they did not disappoint!

Elizabeth & Kurt December 29, 2016

OLDFIELD RIVER CLUB okatie, South Carolina

Elizabeth & Kurt’s story began in a microbiology lab when the two were working for the same company. Even though both quickly moved on to work for other firms, it was clear their relationship was meant to be. In October of 2015, the co-workers-turned-couple were enjoying a quiet evening of pumpkin carving at home when Kurt surprised Liz with his autumnal-handiwork. He carved, “Will you marry me?” into his pumpkin, and Liz happily accepted his proposal. For their wedding, the Philadelphia-based pair headed to their favorite vacation spot for an end-of-the-year celebration with an intimate guest list of 85. They’ve always had a soft spot in their hearts for the South Carolina coast, and wanted to share the natural beauty and laid-back charm with their guests. The couple instantly fell in love with Oldfield River Club. “We both knew immediately that this was the perfect venue for us,” remembers Liz. From the live oak trees draped in Spanish moss to the breathtaking river views, the club embodied the authentic Lowcountry vibe they had in mind. Liz was eager to find a gown that fit her late December vision. “I was looking for something with a higher neckline and a glamorous silhouette,” recalls Liz. Her

76

dramatic BHLDN gown delivered just that. The sleek dress featured beaded cap sleeves and a deep keyhole back to which she added a delicate up-do by Bride’s Side Beauty and a bold red lip to finish off the look. Kurt and his groomsmen wore classic black tuxedos. To give their traditional attire a little personality, they added fun socks. Liz chose black Alfred Sung dresses with halter straps from Bella Bridesmaids that complemented both the groomsmen’s tuxedos and incorporated their Winter color palette. She loved how the color and length flattered all of her bridesmaids, and their bouquets of white roses and lisianthus with eucalyptus cuffs were the perfect accessory. Urban Poppy draped the water fountain with eucalyptus and white roses for the couple’s outdoor ceremony in the courtyard. As guests arrived they were greeted with specialty espresso drinks, like salted caramel lattes and red eye Americanos—the perfect Winter beverages—from The Corner Perk. The aisle markers flowed with the organic design of the day featuring heavy greenery and soft white blooms. During the ceremony, the couple paused to say ‘thank you’ to their parents and gifted them each with a white rose as a sign of their deep appreciation. After they exchanged their vows, guests were ushered inside the River Club for cocktail hour where shrimp wontons, smoked barbecue on sweet potato biscuits, and black mission figs with Gorgonzola mousse on crostinis made the rounds. On the back lawn, a three-course dinner was served under the white reception tent featuring a choice of prosciutto-wrapped chicken breast, smoked grilled salmon or eggplant rollatini. The final course was a three-tiered cake from Savannah Hall of Cakes with layers of blueberry-lemon, Italian cream, and Bananas Foster. When the reception ended, guests received individual packs of coffee, aptly titled “Grounds for Celebration,” before loading up in the trolley with the newlyweds to head back to their Hilton Head hotels.

Kate & Nick november 12, 2016

PRIVATE RESIDENCE FRIPP ISLAND, SOUTH CAROLINA

High school sweethearts Kate & Nick parted ways after graduation, only to be reunited some four short years later, picking up right where they left off. Nick surprised Kate with a proposal during a humid hike at Lake Rabun, followed by a family celebration later that evening. The Georgia-based couple decided on their favorite beach town of Fripp Island to host their 300 guests for their October 22nd wedding. After much discussion, they decided Kate’s family beach house would serve as the venue with Ashley Rhodes Event Design signed on to execute the details. They set the stage with a custom invitation suite from Emily McCarthy featuring an original watercolor of the family’s home on the envelope liner, a beautiful hand-lettered invitation, and event cards detailing the weekend’s festivities. But as the weekend neared, it was evident Hurricane Matthew’s path was heading for the coastline. After countless family meetings, the couple, whose hearts were set on saying their vows in the Lowcountry, postponed their wedding until November 12, 2016. With the support of their vendor team and their family and friends, the short postponement was soon forgotten and November 12th became the most magical day of their lives.

78

After trying on hundreds of dresses, Kate finally found a dress at Joan Pillow Bridal in Atlanta that sealed the deal. “I definitely had a vision and it turned out more beautiful than I could have ever imagined,“ said Kate of her custom Ines Di Santo gown. Her bridesmaids wore a mix of colors (sand, mauve and dove) from two different designers to flawlessly create the color palette she envisioned. To complement the ladies, the groomsmen wore charcoal suits with ties mimicking the same color wheel. The pair nixed the idea of a first look in exchange for a sentimental ceremony moment, and Kate wouldn’t have it any other way. “Nick’s reaction was worth everything,” she remembers of her walk down the aisle. After they exchanged vows in a traditional ceremony at St. Peter’s Church in Beaufort, the crowd made their way to Fripp for an unforgettable night. As guests arrived, they were greeted by the distinct sounds of a bagpiper as their signature cocktail—“The Hurricane”—was passed. They snacked on vegetarian empanadas and she-crab soup shooters from Proof of the Pudding (where Kate works as the Human Resource Manager) and a giant charcuterie table as a nod to the bride’s Italian heritage. The backyard was completely tented with a clear top so guests could enjoy the night’s sky. Lightweight, grey linen drapes and Edison bulb lights were hung throughout the space to create the elegant, industrial vibe Kate intended. A large, flower-filled box hung from the clear-topped tent over an enviable entrée station of mahi-mahi sliders, fried oysters, and creole-inspired gator tacos to boot. Guests grabbed their seats at an assortment of rustic farm tables, rounds, and café bistro four-tops which were outfitted with rough-cut cypress boxes filled with quicksand roses, succulents, hydrangeas, and potted herbs. To end the evening on the right note, their 300 guests hit the dance floor to the sounds of Surround Sound Band before sending Kate & Nick off with a sparkler exit as they made their way to the after-party!

Melissa&Andrew August 7, 2016

SOHO SOUTH CAFE SAVANNAH, GEORGIA

Thank goodness for post-concert pizza and the mysterious mix up with leftovers that lead to Melissa & Andrew’s first official date. Little did they know that their late-night encounter would lead to a lifetime of happiness. The music-loving couple planned a trip down South to attend the Shaky Knees Festival in Atlanta, GA and made a stopover in Savannah along the way. During their stay, the pair planned a picnic in Forsyth Park where Andrew surprised Melissa with a proposal just as the fountain lights came on. The excited couple headed back to their hotel room to share the news with family and friends before heading out to a ghost tour later that evening. On August 7, 2016, with 40 of their favorites in tow, the couple returned to Savannah to celebrate their love. Hoping to give their Canadian-based guests the full Savannah experience, they created custom welcome bags which were handed out at their welcome party at Cha Bella. Each included a hand-drawn map of their favorite Savannah spots, saltwater taffy, Byrd’s Cookies, and pralines from River Street Sweets. “We really wanted our wedding to feel like us as a couple,” explains Melissa. “We love hosting, dancing, design, and our friends and family mean the world to us. We wanted all of those elements of our relationship and personalities to shine through.” Soho South Cafe, an old mechanical garage turned event space, was the perfect venue for the eclectic reception they were envisioning. “We fell completely in love with the lounge area—rich blue bar stools, black and white checkered floor, huge antique mirrors, and exposed brick had my heart,” Melissa remembers. Melissa wore a gown from her favorite designer’s line, Blush by Hayley Paige, with a V-neck and feminine details that she paired with an elbow-length veil and drop earrings. For her hair and makeup, Melissa left the task to Beyond Beautiful by Heather who created a low, loose up-do to withstand the late Summer’s heat and humidity. The outdoor ceremony took place in the historic Lafayette Square, and even though the sun was scorching that afternoon, it was the couple’s favorite part of the day. As guests arrived, they were seated in vintage white church pews facing the fountain, which was flanked by two oversized white balloons with pastel tassels. Adding to the intimate vibe, the couple invited their close friends to perform a personalized rendition of Ed Sheeran’s “Kiss Me” as the processional began. Reverend Bill Gillespie, who officiated the ceremony, created a custom marriage certificate for the couple to sign during the ceremony as a nod to the wedding day tradition in their native Canada. As the vows concluded, guests were excited to see an ice cream cart from Leopold’s waiting to serve a handful of cool treats. After the ceremony, the couple and their wedding party loaded in a trolley for a champagne toast and photos in the historic district, while the rest of the guests made their way to Soho South. They arrived for cocktail hour to find stuffed mushrooms, bacon-wrapped dates, and, for a little added Southern flair, miniature chicken & waffles being passed amongst the crowd. The team at Ivory & Beau put Soho South’s whimsical vibe on full display by enhancing the eclectic details Melissa & Andrew fell in love with. Mismatched tables and chairs set the tone for the laid-back, fun-filled evening while Edison bulbs draped on the garage door created a charming glow. The tablescapes, created with the couple’s love of design in mind, featured dip-dyed table runners in a variety of colors and sizes, topped with vintage china. In place of table numbers, Andrew designed custom symbols based on the couple’s favorite things (ice cream, dinosaurs, Mickey Mouse, etc.) to add a personalized touch to each tabletop. To tie everything together, the tables were finished off with small bud vases of brightly-colored blooms to accent the china and decor. Dinner gave guests the option of bourbon chicken, shrimp & grits or a classic cheeseburger which was followed by a mini dessert platter of key lime pie and warm Brie with honey. To make sure their crowd was certain of where the celebrating would take place, the same oversized balloons which first appeared at the ceremony site marked the corners of the black and white dance floor. They must have done the trick, because the dance floor is exactly where everyone ended the wonderful weekend.

Sarah & Frank February 25, 2017

the cloister sea island, GEORGIA

Frank & Sarah met in Athens, Georgia while out to dinner with a group of friends at The Last Resort. During that serendipitous meal, the two shared an immediate connection and were inseparable the rest of the weekend. They had been dating long distance for a little over a year when Frank popped the question with a laidback proposal at Sarah’s place in Atlanta. Sarah grew up visiting her grandparents’ Sea Island home and was eager to share the beauty of the Golden Isles with the couple’s friends and family. The festivities started with a rehearsal dinner at her grandparents’ house (which also served as the after-party venue) followed by a ceremony at The Cloister Chapel and a grand reception on The Black Banks Terrace. To complement the luxurious backdrop, Sarah & Frank decided on a black-tie affair for their February event with a romantic color scheme to match. “I wanted the evening to have a lot of beautiful creams and soft pinks with some pops of gold.,” said Sarah. With the help of Caroline Carter Events, they designed a lavish evening at The Cloister for 180 guests that perfectly combined their timeless visions with the stunning oceanside setting.

90

Sarah took her mother, aunt, and three friends to Joan Pillow in Atlanta where she quickly laid eyes on a Monique Lhuillier design. “Once I tried it on, I knew it was the one,” remembers Sarah. The winning gown had a lace bodice and tulle skirt which she paired with a custom bolero for their tradtional ceremony. She borrowed family keepsakes to accompany her down the aisle, including her grandmother’s diamond bracelet and her father’s family bible—an item her grandparents and parents all carried during their ceremonies. Since the chapel only allowed for a modest group of attendants, Sarah & Frank kept the guest list short and invited family and close friends to join them for their six o’clock ceremony. They kept their bridal party small, each tapping one person to stand beside them and six sweet flower girls. Frank and his father, both outfitted in sleek black tuxedos from his father’s clothing store—Frank Romeo’s Clothing—looked on as Sarah made her way down the aisle to the sounds of “Canon in D.” After their first kiss, guests exited the chapel where a bagpiper led the way to the reception just as the sun began to set. The reception took place on The Black Banks Terrace where all three levels overlooked the Atlantic Ocean. A clear tent draped with twinkle lights set the tone for the formal affair where five large chandeliers hung over the black and white dance floor. The seating tables were a mix of high and low tables which were topped with textured arrangements in tones of blush, champagne and white. During cocktail hour, guests sipped on a lemonade specialty cocktail while diving into an extensive raw bar of oysters, lobster, and crab claws. The couple shared their first dance to “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” by Frankie Valli and then, with the help of Evolution Party Band, invited their guests to join in the celebration. When they weren’t partaking in the dance party, you could find guests perched on the white velvet lounge furniture or enjoying late night miniature corn dogs, fries and croque monsieurs. Their epic Sea Island reception ended as Mr. & Mrs. Romeo hopped in a vintage white Bentley and made a beeline for the after-party!

Sarah & Joe April 30, 2016

FORD PLANTATION RICHMOND HILL, GEORGIA

When mutual friends introduced Sarah & Joe in New York City in 2010 (shortly after Sarah had relocated from Atlanta), the pair hit it off immediately. Five short years later, Joe surprised Sarah with the ultimate NYC proposal at Gramercy Park Hotel on a chilly January day. After a celebratory dinner with their parents and a surprise party with friends at The Rose Bar, the couple began dreaming up their perfect Georgia wedding. The Ford Plantation’s coastal views and stately grounds instantly attracted Sarah & Joe, but it was the personal tour from the chef, complete with lemonade and warm chocolate chip cookies, that ultimately won them over. While the bride & groom prepared to send out their simple, custom wedding invitations by Savannah’s Chrissy Skutnik, Caroline Carter Events began bringing their vision to life. A string quartet set the mood for the elegant ceremony on the front lawn of the estate. Guests were seated in wooden church pews while whiskey barrels topped with cascading hydrangeas, white and peach roses, and soft greenery created the aisle. Sarah stunned in a white satin Oscar de la Renta

gown, her natural makeup and a soft, half-up hairstyle completing the classic look. As her something borrowed, she wore the bracelet her best friend was married in, as well as her grandmother’s wedding ring. Carrying lush bouquets of white and peach blooms, each lovingly wrapped with handkerchiefs belonging to Sarah’s late grandmother, the bridesmaids each wore a different dress of her own choosing in a dove grey palette, while the gentlemen donned timeless black tuxedos. The guests were surprised and delighted by a gospel choir singing “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” while being escorted to the cocktail hour, held around the waterfront pool on the back lawn. Sarah & Joe had opted for a first look photo shoot, so they were able to spend every available minute with their guests. After cocktail hour, the party moved into a clear-topped tent adorned with hanging wooden chandeliers draped with lush greenery and glass votives. Each table was graced with a different lace runner the bride selected herself and place settings were made up of mixed pieces of antique china. Rounding out the rustic, old-world charm were low peach and white floral arrangements, mercury glass, and garlands of greenery. “The flowers were truly unbelievable,” recalls Sarah. “Hydrangeas, peach and pink roses, and so much greenery!” Executive Chef Juan Carlos of the Ford Plantation outdid himself with farm-to-table fare from the grounds’ own vegetable garden expertly paired with each guest’s choice of sea bass or filet. The dessert table featured bite-sized cheesecakes, bread pudding, and lemon bars that surrounded the adorable wedding cake in the shape of the bride & groom’s beloved dog, Finley. The Perfect 10 Band kept the party going and guests were even treated to the groom performing a few songs! As the evening wound down, Sarah & Joe drove off in a vintage Rolls Royce toward their happily ever after.

CAYLEIGH HOPKINS The Petal Report www.thepetalreport.com “This is the perfect time to introduce your two families and friends to each other so making it an opportunity for your guests to unwind and enjoy themselves is what this event is all about.”

For every oh-so fabulous wedding that takes place in the Lowcountry, there is an equally amazing rehearsal dinner—and they never seem to get the credit they deserve. But, we are firm believers that an awesome wedding weekend starts with a killer rehearsal dinner and it’s time to give them their due. As the anticipation for your big day nears and the excitement reaches an all-time high, a wellplanned rehearsal dinner will set the tone for the fun times ahead, so, as they say, “Let the games begin!” To create the relaxed vibe we had in mind, we wanted to find a laid-back, inviting space and Leon’s Oyster Shed in Charleston, SC perfectly matched our vision. The shed provides exposed original brick, reclaimed wood, and custom lighting fixtures. It opens on to a quaint brick patio where picnic-style tables and cafe lights are the perfect finishing touch. To up the ante, we handed over the design reigns to Cayleigh Hopkins of The Petal Report to create a gathering that played off the eclectic space…and she did not disappoint. Using slate as the base for the design, Cayleigh pulled in other textures, like denim and leather, to create a masculine foundation. The long, communal table was set with slate place mats which were topped with white linen napkins tied together with leather ribbon. To offset the texture, Charleston Flower Market wove a runner of greenery down the center of the table. Vibrant pomegranates, loquats, and bold blooms were added in for a refreshing pop of color. Long, brown taper candles were placed amongst the decor to add a soft glow as the sun set. The family-style menu went hand-in-hand with the easygoing design, starting with Leon’s famous fried chicken. “Designing a menu that fits the venue and your personalities is crucial for the creation of a memorable event,” said Cayleigh. “The rehearsal dinner is a time to get creative and to do something a bit unusual.” The chicken was served with Southern favorites—a black-eyed pea salad and Brussels sprouts—the perfect accompaniments for a Lowcountry feast.

Because you should always add a little taste of the coast, char-grilled oysters (a Leon’s staple) found a spot on the menu. The bar served up local brews, including a Westbrook pale ale and frosé—a frozen rose slushie. “Creating a specialty cocktail (or two) that speaks to you and your partner as a couple, or as individuals, can be a great conversation starter and is sure to loosen up your guests,” suggests Cayleigh. No meal is complete without a little something sweet, so a pie bar from ABCD Cakes accompanied the comfort food-inspired menu. The finishing details were custom welcome boxes from The Blue Root which included local products like Callie’s cheese crisps, Grey Ghost Bakery cookies and Chucktown Follicle Brown from Holy City Brewing. Now, that’s a rehearsal dinner!

REHEARSAL DINNER DECEMBER 16, 2016

Fox Grape House Katherine (who goes by Katie for short), met Jackson her freshman year at Wake Forest University. By the time sophomore year rolled around, the good friends began dating and have been together ever since. Nine years later, Jackson made plans to propose days before Christmas while on a trip to Katie’s hometown. He surprised Katie with a beautiful family heirloom—his great grandmother’s ring—the same sparkler his father had proposed to his mother with, and because the ring was so old, for her Christmas gift, Katie was able to reset the ring with the band of her choosing. The beloved treasure on Katie’s left hand set the tone for the heartfelt wedding weekend to come. The couple invited 200 guests to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina to enjoy a weekend getaway at their favorite resort town. With multiple events to plan, Amanda Spencer of Spencer Special Events was brought on board to execute the details and design a memorable weekend for all involved. A week before their October 15th wedding, Hurricane Matthew hit the Hilton Head coast forcing the couple to reschedule. The couple was disappointed to cancel their much-anticipated bash, so their friends threw them a last-minute party in Washington, DC to lift their spirits. Back on track, with the help of Amanda Spencer who “took care of everything,” recalls Katie, they picked up the pieces and, just like their engagement days before Christmas, set their sights on a December 17th wedding.

With guests making the trek from up and down the East Coast, Katie & Jackson scheduled multiple events for their guests to enjoy. For those who arrived early, Thursday night kicked off the weekend with an intimate party at Katie’s family’s house, The Fox Grape House, in honor of her father and stepmother’s fifteenth anniversary. On Friday afternoon, Katie and her bridal party enjoyed a relaxing luncheon and wine tasting at the family home, while Jackson and his groomsmen spent the day golfing at Harbour Town Golf Links at The Sea Pines Resort. Friday evening commenced with a rehearsal party at The Ocean Lounge in Sea Pines Resort where guests enjoyed light appetizers as their nearest and dearest swapped stories and toasted the couple. Later that evening, the entire guest list was invited to a lively welcome party at the Fox Grape House where Celebrations Catering & Events served up a tasty spread of lobster rolls, chicken biscuits, and mac & cheese. At the poolside soirée, seating tables were kept simple with soft sea blue linens and driftwood X-back chairs while patterned linens topped the cocktail tables. To enhance the tranquil outdoor space, string lights were hung throughout the backyard to create a soft glow. In keeping with the Holiday spirit, an adults-only coffee bar from The Corner Perk offered guests the spiked versions of their favorite coffee drink while they snacked on freshly popped kettle corn. A caricature artist, the Lowcountry Boil Bluegrass Band, and even Santa Claus kept guests entertained throughout the night!

THE WEDDING DECEMBER 17, 2016

Sea Pines Resort As crazy as the weather can be in the Lowcountry, there was no telling what an outdoor ceremony in December would bring, but as luck would have it, Katie & Jackson’s rescheduled nuptials brought them the perfect 70-degree afternoon. Katie wore a fit & flare Peter Langner gown that featured a form-fitting silhouette with a draped skirt she found at Rizik’s in Washington, DC. She paired the sophisticated silhouette with an elegant up-do, red lip and cascading bouquet. Her bridesmaids wore long Jenny Yoo dresses in a deep shade of peacock blue, while her cousin, who served as her maid of honor, wore a custom suit from The Tailory in New York City. She met Jackson, dressed in a classic tuxedo, for a touching first look under the trees where the couple took time to exchange the vows they had written for each other (they saved the traditional vows for the ceremony). Katie said, “I am so glad we did that—it was my favorite moment of the evening.” The ceremony took place on the 18th lawn of The Harbour Town Golf Links where they said ‘I do’ under a beautiful wooden arbor draped in greenery and floral detailing. After the picture-perfect ceremony, guests were ready to get the celebration started in the Champions Ballroom at The Harbour Town Clubhouse. The charming, antique finish of the wooden Chloe chairs offset the shining, textured blue table linens.

KATIE WOLFE STUBBS “Be grateful – your engagement year and wedding is when you have the opportunity to see the true colors of a lot of friends and family (and they, your true colors)…if you have chosen to surround yourself with good people you will continually be surprised by the generosity of your loved ones. Having a wedding canceled and rescheduled only add to that. The way people stepped up to help us was tremendous.”

Each table boasted simple place settings comprised of sparkling glass and gold-rimmed chargers surrounding the lush green and white floral arrangements, which were made all the more inviting by warm candlelight. After being greeted with a specialty cocktail of champagne & Chambord (a raspberry liqueur) on the Champions Veranda, the crowd moved to the ballroom where they found their seating cards under a canopy of fresh flowers. The newlyweds entered as “At Last” played in the background—a fitting tune due to their long courtship and rescheduled date. Friends and family enjoyed a sumptuous dinner highlighted by a seared potato & chive crusted chicken breast paired with a bacon risotto. The final course was the wedding cake which offered three tasty flavors—vanilla, chocolate, and almond. Katie & Jackson took to the dance floor for their first dance to “Into the Mystic” by Van Morrison which set the stage for the rest of the evening. The Michel Jons Band kept everyone on their feet until it was time for the couple to be whisked away to the Inn at Harbour Town for an equally unforgettable after-party. At the Inn, guests were treated to a late-night snack of Chik-Fil-A and music by Sara Bruns where singing and dancing lasted into the wee hours of the morning. The couple, and their loved ones, were successfully filled to the brim with enough love to last a lifetime.

CENTERPIECES - The trend of all-white blooms continued in the table decor. Hydrangeas, roses and lisianthus encircled by aromatic eucalyptus leaves provided the floral base for the arrangements. Countless glass and gold mercury votives created a warm glow to add to the glam vibe.

THE BOUQUET - A cascading bouquet was the perfect addition to Katie’s bridal day attire. The fragrant bouquet from A Floral Affair included lush white peonies and roses surrounded by greenery.

THE CEREMONY - There isn’t a better spot for an outdoor ceremony at Sea Pines than on the 18th lawn of Harbour Town Golf Links. The immaculate course offers one of the best views along the coast with views of the Calibogue Sound, Daufuskie Island and Harbour Town’s signature red and white striped lighthouse.

SEATING CARD DISPLAY - “This is where we have a lot of fun with our clients to do something different,” said Amanda Spencer. “We used a beautiful ruffle wall to display the gorgeous hand-lettered escort cards for guests table assignments. It was so elegant, guests posed for pictures in front of the decor all evening long.”

THE DECOR - When the couple rescheduled their wedding close to the holidays, they adjusted their aesthetic to complement the late December decor at the resort. They used a color palette of green, white and steel blue with hints of gold to create a glitzy, Winter reception.

ADVICE

“A friend offered this advice to me: ‘Once you make your way down the aisle, pause for a moment to look out at all the people who came to support your union and celebrate your love.’ The day is a whirlwind; taking a moment to ingrain that image in my memory is something I think back on with appreciation.”

WELCOME FESTIVITIES MARCH 18, 2016

Kiawah Island, SC Ali & Ian are proof, yet again, that online dating apps are here to stay. The two, who were both living in New York City at the time, met on Match.com and their instant attraction led to a magical first date in the Big Apple. The evening, which started at Grand Central Station, was followed by ice skating at Bryant Park and ended with a sushi dinner. A year later, the pair, who had just moved in to an apartment in Connecticut, received news that Ian was being transferred to Omaha, Nebraska. Without hesitation, Ali jumped on board with the move and was excited to share in this new chapter with Ian. After spotting Omaha on a map, they packed their bags and made the 1,200-mile trek cross-country. After settling into their new home in Nebraska, Ian surprised Ali with an intimate pre-Thanksgiving proposal followed by a celebration with friends later that evening. With family scattered at both ends of the East Coast, his in Florida and her family in New York, South Carolina was the ideal meeting spot for the destination wedding they envisioned. On a trip to Charleston to find their perfect venue, they met seasoned event planner, Cindy Zingerella of Engaging Events, while visiting a local plantation. After hearing the couple’s plans for a seated reception and Ian’s love of golf, Cindy suggested they check out Kiawah Island Club’s River Course and kindly set them up with a property tour for later that day. Cindy’s intuition was on point because after their visit Ali was sold. “I walked out of the venue set on having the wedding there,” she said. With the venue secured, they scheduled their wedding for March 19, 2016 and teamed up with

Cindy and her team at Engaging Events to assist with the logistics and aesthetics of the entire weekend. Studio R, a Charleston stationer, set the stage for the weekend’s events by designing custom paper goods to properly communicate the weekend’s multiple events and transportation details in the months leading up to the wedding. After sending out the initial save-the-dates, each guest received a 6-month reminder card which featured the leaf design from Ali’s dress, followed by a full invitation suite printed on a luxurious paper resembling a rustic bark. The extensive invitation, and the couple’s detailed website, made sure each guest was excited and prepared to celebrate! As guests began trickling into the Lowcountry, they found personalized welcome baskets (customized based on the pre-wedding events they were attending) in their rooms preparing them for the fun to come. On Friday, March 18th, guests had the option to join the bride or groom for a Lowcountry-themed afternoon. Being a golf enthusiast, Ian hit the links at The Ocean Course for a relaxing afternoon where participants received commemorative golf balls with the couple’s name and date. After they finished the course, guests capped off the Spring day with a luncheon at the clubhouse overlooking the Atlantic. The rest of the crowd hopped aboard a bus from Lancaster Tours to accompany Ali at one of Charleston’s historic plantations, Middleton Place. They toured the grounds, including a stop at the stables, before enjoying a fantastic Southern-inspired lunch at Middleton Inn. Later that evening, before the rehearsal dinner, Ali & Ian asked close family members to join them in a private room at The Sanctuary where the couple had their official Jewish ceremony and signed the ketubah.

REHEARSAL DINNER MARCH 18, 2016

Mingo Point On Friday evening, the couple invited their guests to the first official event of the weekend—a laid-back rehearsal dinner. The outdoor venue, Mingo Point, was the perfect setting to share the casual, Lowcountry vibe that Ali & Ian love. The Engaging Events team decorated the tables with black gingham linens and, to add a fun pop of color, galvanized buckets of wildflowers in shades of red, yellow, blue, and pale green, were placed in the center. To create a glow as the sun went down, string lights were hung throughout the trees. The bonfire was lit as guests began to arrive and guitarist Rotie Salley set the mood for the celebratory evening along the Kiawah River. Guests sipped on Lowcountry Lemonade, served in mason jars with festive straws, as they socialized and enjoyed a life-sized Jenga game and cornhole. For dinner, the crowd rolled up their sleeves for a good ol’ fashioned oyster roast before roasting marshmallows around the fire. Jim Smeal designed three groom’s cakes as an ode to Ian’s many passions. The first represented Ian’s love of golf with the couple’s two pups on the 18th green, the second was in honor of the New Jersey Devils hockey team and the final cake shared his love for the University of Michigan football team.

THE WEDDING MARCH 19, 2016

The River Course Ali had a clear idea of the ”rustic elegance” design she hoped to achieve for Saturday’s reception and worked with Engaging Events to mold earthy tones (green, grey, and beige) with a pop of lavender to create the refined evening she fancied. Hoping to fully embrace the beauty of the Lowcountry, they relied heavily on Cindy and her team to blend their sophisticated color palette with the stunning coastal backdrop to create a wedding uniquely theirs. Guests arrived, dressed in their black-tie best, for the couple’s six o’clock ceremony. They were ushered to the 18th hole at The River Course where deep mahogany chairs with ivory cushions faced the waterfront view. Two, over-the-top arrangements filled with lush hydrangeas, roses and hanging amaranthus marked the aisle and paved the way for the floral display that was to come. Instead of a full wedding party, the couple opted to have only their sisters serve as bridesmaids, each of whom wore a floor-length grey dress of their own choosing to keep with the formal theme. Ali dazzled in a bespoke Mira Zwillinger gown which featured a delicate leaf detailing and tulle skirt. Live musicians played an instrumental rendition of “Just The Way You Are,” by Bruno Mars as the bride made her way down the aisle side-by-side with her parents. The couple turned to Engaging Events to custom design a one-of-a-kind chuppah. Made from white birch and branches, and dressed in natural greenery, the entire structure was accented with

lush flowers in the couple’s color scheme of lavender, ivory, and green. The pair joined hands under the chuppah where a close family friend presided over their vows. Officiant Mark Perlson’s family ties run deep—he served as Ali’s father’s best man and officiated her sister’s ceremony—and his presence over their nuptials was the personal touch they were looking for. Following in Ian’s cousins’ footsteps, the couple were married beneath his grandfather’s tallit—a Jewish prayer shawl. The family heirloom was particularly important to the couple as Ian’s grandfather was a Holocaust survivor. As the ceremony ended, the couple gathered the entire crowd for a commemorative group photo. The rustic aesthetic ultimately carried over to the reception where Engaging Events brought the outdoors in with luxurious details. Patio tables were covered with a textured linen that mimicked an earthy burlap, and were then layered with a sheer green topper that featured a leaf-like pattern. In the ballroom, rich grey linens draped the reception tables which were surrounded by black chivari chairs with grey cushions. Adding to the chic atmosphere of the ballroom, silver-rimmed chargers cradled custom menu cards boasting of the culinary treats to come. To strike a balance between their outdoor ceremony and indoor reception, an abundance of tall flowering branches, mixed with tulips and orchids, stood in the center of each table to finish off the fabulous design. Guests filled the dance floor throughout the evening, only taking breaks to indulge in smörgåsbord of late night snacks—soft pretzels, grilled cheese with tomato soup shooters, quesadillas, beef sliders, pizza and French fries—before heading to The Sanctuary for the after-party!

THE WOW FACTOR - “Ali had shared with us photos of a few arbors and chuppahs,” remembers Cindy Zingerella. “We took that inspiration and created a custom piece just for them. Their marriage was the reason everyone was there and being under that chuppah with the white birch and branches that was very Ali, and the beautiful florals that helped create the formality that I know Ian wanted as well…I felt like it was the perfect place for them to say their ‘I do’s.’” THE GOWN - Ali wore an A-line, Mira Zwillinger gown with a tulle skirt and appliqué details from Mark Ingram Atelier. To add a little shine, the seamstress spent six months hand-stitching beading and sequins in all the right places.

THE CAKE - Designed by Jim Smeal, the threetiered, chocolate Kahlua and crème caramel cake echoed the soft, leaf accents from Ali’s dress. It was even tinted a light shade of green to reflect the evening’s color scheme. THE BOUQUET - Ali’s bouquet featured a slight cascade using sterling roses, stephanotis, phalaenopsis orchids, white hydrangea, and green amaranthus.

THE DECOR - Hoping to jive rustic details into a refined reception, they used a muted color palette of creams, tan, and grey, along with touches of green and lavender to make it pop.

“With the planning, don’t get too caught up with tradition or trend, think about you and your fiancé and have fun creating a day that is truly representative of who you are! Once the day finally arrives, just let go and have the most fun! Remember, the best is yet to come…the wedding day is only day 1.”

Chamberlain & Stephen April 8, 2017

savannah yacht club savannah, GEORGIA

HOW THEY MET - The couple met on July 10, 2010 at a local bar in Statesboro, GA. Chamberlain, who had added Stephen as a Facebook friend a week earlier, struck up a conversation with her new “friend” over a round of drinks. Fast forward twelve days later and the newly-minted Facebook pals were officially a couple. DRESS - Chamberlain invited her mother, Stephen’s mom and a few local bridesmaids to join her for a day of dress shopping at Kelly’s Closet in Atlanta, GA. They arrived to find the boutique was hosting a trunk show for Australian designer, Anna Campbell, and Chamberlain was immediately intrigued by her intricate designs. The Ashlyn gown, which boasted hand-embellished lace, delicate hand-beaded shoulder loops and a low back, was the first gown to capture Chamberlain’s attention, and the minute she slipped it on she knew it was the one. VENUE - As a native of Savannah, Chamberlain grew up spending her summers at The Savannah Yacht Club, and was eager to book the space for their April wedding. Luckily, Stephen, who is from the mountains of North Georgia, had also developed a love for the coast, making the yacht club an easy choice for both of them.

COLOR PALETTE - As an interior designer, Chamberlain knew exactly what she wanted for her big day. Her white, silver, grey, and navy color palette laid the framework for the chic, minimalist vibe she had envisioned. MENU - Guests enjoyed the seafood towers, imported cheese displays, risotto bar, crab cakes, carving station, and even a live action churros station—the bride’s favorite! CAKES - The three-tiered main cake from Vintage Soul Cakes was custom designed by the bride and each layer was separated by a thin ribbon of navy blue. The bottom layer resembled white marble, the middle was a metallic silver and the funfetti-flavored top layer was white fondant. The finishing touch—a custom, laser cut topper which read “FOR LIKE EVER”. The groom’s cake, made by high school friend, Tina Arnsdorff, was a replica of Georgia Southern University’s football field with a coordinating helmet. SURPRISE - Chamberlain & Stephen managed to keep one detail of their wedding secret from the bridal party. As the couple and their attendants posed for pictures in front of the yacht club, their planner surprised the group with twenty rescue pups and the couple’s chihuahuas. Completely shocked by the furry additions, no one could stop talking about the welcomed revelation. Instead of late-night snacks, guests were encouraged to pick up a dog treat for their fur babies as they departed, where they could also find information on donating to One Love Animal Rescue. Caroline & Matthew OCTOBER 29, 2016

CASSINA POINT PLANTATION EDISTO ISLAND, SOUTH CAROLINA

VENUE - Caroline & Matt had a feeling that Edisto Island would host their weekend of wedding festivities. “Edisto had always been special to me as I have gone there with family and friends forever. It was somewhere I loved sharing with Matt as our relationship grew,” said Caroline. As they began searching for the perfect venue, they were immediately impressed with Cassina Point Plantation. “It was a beautiful location and the owners, Bruce and Tecla Earnshaw, were amazing to work with. We were able to really use the space the way we wanted.” BRIDESMAIDS’ ATTIRE - Caroline worked with the team at Sash in Columbia, SC to select LulaKate dresses for her bridesmaids. She chose a shantung fabric in soft shade of sky blue. Each girl selected the neckline of their choosing which was paired with the floor-length dahlia skirt, complete with practical pockets. It was important to Caroline that each of her bridesmaids felt comfortable throughout the day and had a dress that suited their different body types. COLOR PALETTE - For the aesthetic, they were keen to create an atmosphere that exuded the Lowcountry hospitality they both adore and wanted the natural beauty of Cassina Point to drive the color palette and decor. They selected hues of blue, green, and silver to highlight the serene setting of Edisto Island.

CEREMONY - For the ceremony, the couple wanted to create the feeling of an outdoor chapel. They decided on a spot overlooking the marsh under an old oak tree that was once struck by lightning. They exchanged vows in front of a wooden cross that was enhanced with magnolia leaves and white blooms. DECOR - The reception tent far exceeded Caroline & Matt’s expectations and truly drove home the Lowcountry vibe their hearts were set on. Tables were decorated with a mix of lanterns, driftwood and candlelight. Centerpieces consisted of ranunculus, Spanish moss, magnolias, fresh wheat, garden roses, and a variety of hydrangeas. MENU - Cocktail hour served up Cajun deviled eggs topped with drunken shrimp, mushroom pâté with bread rounds, and sautéed sausage links with a honey Dijon dipping sauce, paired with the couple’s drink of choice—an Old Fashioned. For the main event, guests enjoyed three stations which included a beef carving station with macaroni & cheese and roasted asparagus, crab cakes and a garden salad, and Matt’s pick, the “ultimate grilled cheese” bar served with tomato bisque. CAROLINE’S ADVICE - “Stay focused on the big picture of celebrating you and your fiancé starting your life together. At least one or two stressful things are bound to happen while planning, maybe even a hurricane will hit! But if you stay focused on that big picture, planning can be much more fun than stressful.” FEATURED VENDORS - Venue: Cassina Point Plantation ll Photographer: Olivia Griffin Photography ll Coordinator: Au Contraire Event & Design ll Floral Design: On a Limb Floral Design

Kate & Alex SEPTEMBER 24, 2016

SAVANNAH GOLF CLUB SAVANNAH, GEORGIA

HOW THEY MET - Kate & Alex were both born and raised in Savannah, Georgia and had always known of each other, but it wasn’t until orientation at The University of Georgia that they really hit it off. “We caught eyes, talked for a little, and dated soon after. The rest was history,” remembers Kate. VENUES - The couple selected The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist as the ceremony site, not only because of its stunning interior, but because of their personal connection to the church. “Alex and I both graduated in the church and we knew The Cathedral would be the church we would raise our future family in,” said Kate. For their reception, they decided on The Savannah Golf Club, a place they both grew up visiting. “It had everything we wanted and more for a reception space,” recalls Kate. “A classic ballroom, outdoor courtyard space and close proximity to the church.” THE DRESS - Finding her dress was one of Kate’s favorite pre-wedding events. She brought her mom, sister, and grandmother along on the trip to BleuBelle Bridal where she only tried on six dresses. The first dress she tried on, a Martina Liana, caught her eye, and when the stylist added a crystal belt and sheer veil, she knew it was the one. It had lace straps, a V-back and long dramatic train, perfect for her ceremony at The Cathedral. “When I was all dressed, my entourage and myself cried! We celebrated with champagne with the BleuBelle team.”

COLOR PALETTE - Navy, gold, black, and ivory. Kate had always loved the richness of navy and gold and knew it would complement her plans for a black-tie affair. THE CEREMONY - The ceremony was the couple’s favorite part of the day. A violinist, trumpeter and organist were on hand to play the music. Her bridesmaids, dressed in navy Amsale dresses, walked down the aisle to “Pachelbel’s Canon.” Kate and her father followed in grand fashion as the trumpeter played “The Prince of Denmark’s March.” OUTDOOR DECOR - Cafe lights were strung throughout the courtyard to create a soft glow. Tables were topped with crisp white linens and surrounded by gold chivari chairs. Centerpieces in birch wood boxes were overflowing with white hydrangeas, roses, and greenery. Mercury glass votives hung from the large gold branches which popped out of the arrangement. MENU - Alex & Kate wanted to create an atmosphere which allowed guests to mingle throughout. To achieve this, they decided on food stations which included a New York strip carving station, a raw bar, spring rolls, fried chicken and, our favorite, a grilled cheese station which featured a variety of breads, cheese, veggies and meats. CAKE - Four-tiered cake from Flirt with Dessert with white fondant petals and layers of vanilla, chocolate ganache, lemon with raspberry filling, and red velvet. Bailey & Matthew NOVEMBER 5, 2016

BOONE HALL PLANTATION MOUNT PLEASANT, SOUTH CAROLINA

VENUE - “When I walked into Boone Hall and the sunlight streamed through the moss on the giant Live Oaks with horses strolling in the background…that was it,” remembers Bailey of her trip to Boone Hall Plantation. “To this day, that place still gives me goosebumps!” BAILEY ON HER GOWN - “We walked into Fabulous Frocks and I quickly started to pull what I thought I wanted. Then, out of the corner of my eye, my mom lifted up a gown with wide eyes and said, ‘you MUST try this one on!’ I thought she had gone crazy. The cut was not what I was looking for, it was tulle, and it was pink. After about 5 ‘no’s’, I gave in just to appease her and threw it in the mix. It was the 4th one I tried on. When I walked out the sales associate gasped, my mother got teary eyed, and I knew, without even seeing it in the mirror, that this was the one. That whisper pink, Watters Soledad gown was made for me and I am still obsessed with it…not to mention my mother still gloats that she was the one who found my dream dress.”

COLOR PALETTE - The couple’s color palette of shades of blush and pops of metallic gold was built around Bailey’s gown. To turn up the romance for their November affair, they added burgundy accents. “My vision was to mix the rustic, natural setting with lush fabrics, florals and rich details,” said Bailey.

CEREMONY DETAILS - The ceremony took place under the Avenue of Oaks. The couple’s neighbor handcrafted a cross for their altar and wooden doors that opened to the aisle. As guests arrived they were greeted by the Plantation Singers who sang in tandem with a violin. They received a welcome cocktail of rose champagne that included quotes from The Notebook. Down the aisle, each chair was draped with burgundy and pink ribbons with a spray of greenery as aisle markers. CAKE - At The Cotton Dock, two cakes from Connie Watters of Sugar Magnolia Cake Boutique were on display. “Connie and I swam together in our childhood and she had done another friend’s wedding cake. We reached out to her for a tasting and WOW am I glad we did,” remembers Bailey. Their wedding cake had three tiers with two flavors—dark chocolate with mint frosting and hummingbird with cream cheese frosting. “I wanted the design to be a pink watercolor wash with flecks of gold, accented by real flowers…she NAILED it.” FLOWERS - At the reception, lush garlands of eucalyptus and rosemary ran down the guest tables, dotted with vintage gold candlesticks and bud vases which held blooms in shades of pink and red with pomegranate accents. Their favorite detail? The floral chandelier that hung over the dance floor. FAVORS - In place of favors, they created a “Doggie Bar” that had a variety of dog biscuits and treat bags for guests to take home to their fur babies. Additionally, the couple made a monetary donation to the rescue shelter where they adopted their two pups. VINTAGE LOVE

Our deep appreciation for the Lowcountry stems, not only from the coastal scenery, but also the storied tales of its historic past that are buried deep inside the walls of some of today’s favorite venues. These celebrated buildings have welcomed notable figures in American history and still stand today to welcome visitors and couples alike. Their open doors and grand halls allow couples to celebrate their love where others have stood before them, and many others will follow. The South Carolina Society Hall stands tall on Charleston’s Meeting Street, tucked in a residential area just past bustling Broad Street. The South Carolina Society was originally organized in 1737, as a way to assist members in need. The charitable organization was nicknamed “The Two Bit Society”—as members agreed to weekly dues of two bits, or 16 pence—and began focusing their attention on providing education to underprivileged children in the Holy City. Between 1799-1804, the Society began constructing its current location as a school for children and a meeting place. Covered in stucco, the two-story brick building houses a large ballroom on the second floor with a stunning Neoclassical canopy. As a result of the damage sustained from the Civil War and the earthquake of 1886, the interior of the building was renovated in the late 1800’s and has since been used as the backdrop for private functions and timeless Lowcountry weddings ever since. Long before the days of online dating apps, guys and gals relied on a little help from their inner circle to find their special someone. Take it from Eileen Calder & Bernard Ferri, who have their co-workers to thank for their successful blind date. A few short years later, Eileen & Bernie were planning a classic Charleston wedding July 3, 1971 for 100 of their closest friends and family South Carolina Society Hall members in the Summer of 1971. The Charleston, South Carolina historic Society Hall was the perfect fit for their July 3, 1971 wedding. Not only did they enjoy the elegance and charm of the Greek revival-style building, but it was perfectly suited to comfortably fit their large guest list. Eileen wore a long-sleeved lace gown with a high neckline that she purchased from Condon’s Bridal which she paired with a soft bouquet of ivory roses, daisies, and baby’s breath. A soft up-do, shoulder-length veil and gold pendant necklace rounded out her wedding day attire. Her bridesmaids, which included her sisters and friends from childhood and nursing school, wore sunny yellow dresses down the aisle—with the exception for her maid of honor who wore sage green—and white hats while carrying baskets of daisies. They were wed in a traditional Catholic ceremony at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church where daisy aisle markers softened the space. Following the nuptials, guests caravaned to The Society Hall where the celebration began. Guests were served a popular Lowcountry-inspired menu of roast beef tenderloin, finger sandwiches and Meeting Street crab. After touching speeches, the couple toasted their new marriage in silver champagne goblets, a wedding staple they’ve used each anniversary since. With beautiful Lowcountry weddings like Eileen & Bernie’s, full of touching Southern accents and personalized details, it’s no surprise that today’s couples yearn to carry on the tradition by tying the knot in our beloved Lowcountry. There is an innate, and unmistakable attraction in historic venues like the South Carolina Society Hall that have the ability to seamlessly blend tales of the Old South while highlighting each couple’s personality, both past and present. We thank Eileen & Bernard for carrying forward the traditions and timeless details that we continue to see and draw upon in weddings of today.
