Inspiring Illustrators
Beatriz Mutelet
Beatriz Mutelet is a French artist who I admire for a few different reasons. Firstly, I am inspired by her visual signature overall, as I love her sketchy yet detailed way of drawing and the muted colour palette she teams with it. I am also inspired by her use of mixed media, such as watercolour and pencil. Beatriz promotes her work on her Instagram account, where she has gained a massive following of 28.1K. She also has her own website which features a biography, a gallery and an online shop, where she sells prints and original drawings. Her original drawings sell for around 2-300 Euros, I am not sure how much that is in pounds but it is still quite a lot and makes me feel hopeful that one day I may be able to make a similar amount of money from drawing and painting. I am not sure what exactly inspires Mutelet however she states that she feels that art is a ‘door on the soul’ and she enjoys art in all forms.
Shana Levenson
Shana Levenson is an American artist whose paintings inspire me hugely. Her website states that she is a fine artist but I decided to include her in this as I am usually more inspired by people who call themselves fine artists rather than illustrators. I think Shana’s paintings are truly amazing and definitely make me feel the need to paint a lot more. Her work is interesting and has an eerie feel which is something I admire and would like to make my own work have a similar atmosphere. Again, like Mutelet, Levenson promotes her work on her Instragram account where she has 31.4k followers. She also has a website with a gallery, a biography and a list of her education. She sells her paintings, however does not have an online shop, she simply posts images of available paintings for sale on her Instagram account and asks people to message her should they be
AM DeBrinc at
AM DeBrincat is an artist based in Brooklyn, New York. I am massively inspired by this artist for lots of different reasons. The first reason why I am so inspired is the use of mixed media this artist uses, such as the way they combine painting with pencil drawing, with collage and digital work. The way they manage to make almost classical painting work alongside digital stuff is something that inspires me and I feel like trying painting with collage, despite the fact I know it would never turn out as well. AM DeBrincat also uses an Instagram account to promte their work to a massive audience of 93.3K followers. From what I can see, DeBrincat does not currently sell any of their works via an online shop or anything and I am not sure where or how they do sell their works.
Seth Bogart
Seth Bogart is one of my favourite artists. He is an American musician, illustrator and ceramicist and I particularly admire his ceramics. Seth has over 28K followers on Instagram where he promotes himself and the work he makes. He also has his own shop in LA called Wacky Wacko as well as an online store. He sells his work on a number of different garments as well as making zines and ceramics/ He has just released a book featuring images of some of his ceramic pieces. Seth inspires me as his work is very different and I enjoy the colours and the effortless look it has. I feel like his work is never ‘safe’ and he is always doing something new and original which I find massively inspiring and he makes me want to have a go at ceramics myself.
Natalie Foss
Natalie Foss has been a big inspiration to me for a long time now and I am certain she will always inspire me. I am inspired by the quirky portraits that she makes which combine very realistic detail with simple block colour. I also like the way she uses pattern and she definitely has an eye for colour. Foss again, like the others, promotes her work on her Instagram account to 38.8K followers as well as selling her work on different products via Society 6. It is interesting to look at her Society 6 page to see what sort of products portraits actually work on. I love the way her work looks as prints or on tote bags, but I am unsure about portraits on bedding sets and throw pillows as personally, I don’t feel it works.
