Quanto agli accessori va sottolineato comunque che sulla maggior parte delle passerelle gli stilisti hanno messo a dura prova l’incolumità delle modelle, costrette a caracollare su tacchi vertiginosi. Poche e meritevoli le eccezioni: Chanel, Comme des Garcons e Valentino che ha incantato con la sua donna femminile e sofisticata. d’estate, meglio scegliere capi colorati… un segnale di ottimismo di cui abbiamo tutti bisogno. Insomma un grande successo per la pelle che si conferma un materiale sempre più apprezzato, non solo dalle grandi firme, ma anche da giovani come Marianna Rosati, direttore creativo di Drome, che ha avuto il doppio merito di presentare una collezione deliziosa e innovativa in una location straordinariamente originale e affascinante. Una casa d’artista nel Marais, dove, fra quadri, installazioni e sculture di sapore retrò, si aggiravano modelle in body e cappottini in pizzo di pelle macramè, t-shirt laminate in tutte le sfumature pastello e giacche smoking. Uno scrupoloso lavoro di ricerca che reinventa la pelle fra inserti metallici, ricami e stampe animalier traforate a laser e digitalizzate. Contemporaneità vuol dire reinterpretare la tradizione e questa giovane stilista fiorentina, approdata a Parigi con il suo armadio delle meraviglie, merita un 10 e lode. ■

I want to wear nothing but leather

T

here’s no doubt whatsoever: it was a triumph for leather, there is not one designer in New York, Milan or Paris, who has not created at least one look using this material. Coats, dresses, jackets, skirts and t-shirts in all styles and colours for every moment of the day.

And, as the seasons now seem to merge into one, with heat no longer being a problem, people still wear leather even in August. Thanks to the most advanced processing techniques, this material can be as light as a feather, perforated, decorated, laser-processed or laminated to create the most extraordinary effects.

And if Miuccia Prada decorates her skirts with cars, Riccardo Tisci, the Creative Director for Givenchy, gives us maxi leather sequins, inlays and details.

A big round of applause also for the two-tone architectures by Phoebe Philo, at the helm of Celine, who charmed Paris with her rigorous volumes. Little sculptures like shoes with a high risk of falling, a medium level of seduction and a high level of creativity. However, when it came to accessories, it has to be said that the designers really put the models’ safety on most of the catwalks to the test, being forced as they were to teeter around on heels that would make your head spin.

Just a few, noteworthy exceptions: namely Chanel, Comme des Garcons and Valentino who charmed us with a feminine and sophisticated woman. Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli focused on seductive red in their use of leather…

Occurrences and recurrences… as is always the case in fashion, studs are once again all the rage, with the legendary leather jacket made famous in the 1950s by James Dean or Marlon Brando…

The colour on the catwalks dedicated to Ralph Lauren was powder pink, whereas for Ennio Capasa, the Creative Director at Costume National, the focus was on turquoise green. At least in the Summer, it’s best to go for colourful garments… a sign of optimism which we all need. In short, a great success for leather which was, once again, confirmed as being a material that is always well-rated, not just by the top designer labels, but also by ‘newcomers’ such as much Marianna Rosati, the Creative Director at Drome, who was praised twice for presenting a delightful and innovative collection in an extraordinary original and fascinating location. An artist’s house in Marais, where, amid paintings, installations and sculptures of a retro nature, models could be seen wandering around dressed in leotards and coats made of macrmé leather lace, laminated t-shirts in the full range of pastel shades and smoking jackets. A scrupulous job of research aimed at reinventing leather among metal inserts, embroidery and animal-like prints, both laser-perforated and digitised. Being contemporary means reinterpreting tradition and this young Florentine designer, who took Paris by storm with her array of wonders, deserves full marks, 10 out of 10! ■

uando sei giovane, motivata e di cognome fai Versace, c’è soltanto un modo per evitare insostenibili confronti o scorciatoie: scegliere un brand che esprima un concetto. Francesca Versace l’ha individuato in Sedici45, che richiama l’anno di pubblicazione di un trattato dell’abate Agostino Lampugnani – il 1645 appunto – nel quale compare per la prima volta il termine “moda” utilizzato nella sua attuale accezione. La rinuncia al nome familiare non significa distacco, il legame con papà Santo è solido al pari del ricordo di zio Gianni, che resta il suo punto di riferimento stilistico. bandonando Milano per formarsi alla Saint Martin di Londra, a cui avrebbe fatto seguito un’importante esperienza in Asia, per poi tornare in Italia dove ha collaborato con Verri (abbigliamento maschile) e approfondito la conoscenza dei materiali, in particolare la pelle. Il sogno, creare una propria linea di pelletteria, è diventato da qualche mese realtà. Le sue borse, presentate all’ultimo Pitti, coniugano qualità e ricerca, stile e praticità.

Perché proprio la pelletteria?

Perché l’accessorio, fin dai tempi della scuola e dell’università, mi ha sempre molto divertito e affascinato. È un ambito in cui credo ci sia molto spazio per esprimere la propria creatività. E poi adoro il profumo della pelle, un materiale dalle straordinarie proprietà: durevolezza, flessibilità, resistenza all’acqua, per non parlare di tutta la gamma di colori, texture e finiture che si adeguano a qualsiasi stile. È uno di quei materiali che, pensati e resi in un modo tutto mio, ho maggiormente usato per realizzare alcuni pezzi della mia collezione. Per la mia borsa da viaggio “Ushuaia” per esempio, ho usato una pelle rinforzata con una rete metallica affinché fosse flessibile, ma allo stesso tempo resistente, visto che quando si è in viaggio, il bagaglio non si cura molto...

Le borse sono prodotte totalmente in Italia e in particolare nel distretto toscano della pelletteria.

Che "plus" garantisce questa scelta?

Il polo toscano della pelle si distingue per le tradizionali competenze artigianali di lavorazione, unite alla qualità dei materiali e alla cura dei dettagli.

con gli artigiani. Alla fine cresci insieme a loro nel migliorare uno degli oggetti più desiderati al mondo.

Quali sono le sue fonti di ispirazione quando disegna una borsa?

Derivano esclusivamente dal mio “bagaglio” personale, dal mio amore per i viaggi, dalla mia curiosità e passione per le cose belle. Ricordi ed esperienze realmente vissuti che diventano progetti e prodotti. Sono ancora una ragazza “a matita” e mi sento realizzata quando vedo pile e pile di miei schizzi sulla scrivania.

Prevede una collezione di calzature in abbinamento alle borse?

Le borse sono il mio punto di partenza e la mia idea è quella di ampliare a 360 gradi il marchio. Sì, adoro anche le scarpe e non vedo l’ora di iniziare!

Perché ha scelto il PittiW per la presentazione della collezione?

Considero PittiW la piattaforma ideale per il lancio del mio nuovo marchio perché è attenta a quei progetti che rappresentano novità assolute nell’universo femminile e che si segnalano per la qualità dei prodotti. E poi mi ricorda un po’ mio zio Gianni.

Il suo cognome l'ha aiutata od ostacolata?

Indubbiamente porto un cognome importante ma la mia scelta, consapevole, è stata quella di intraprendere da sola il mio cammino, cosciente delle difficoltà che incontrerò. Vorrei e voglio che si parli del prodotto Sedici45 non perché disegnato da Francesca Versace ma perché ricco di contenuto e distintivo. E credo che tante persone che hanno visitato il mio stand a PittiW non si siano nemmeno accorte della mia presenza, perché attratte dalle mie borse.

Lei si è formata stilisticamente a Londra e più volte ha affermato che uscire dall'Italia è un passaggio fondamentale. Solo per una questione caratteriale o anche formativa?

È un'opportunità formativa di grande valore, permette di essere più competitivi sul mercato del lavoro, di sperimentare le capacità di adattamento ad una nuova realtà. L'esperienza all'estero rappresenta, nella maggior parte dei casi,

l'opportunità migliore per crescere come individuo, per favorire situazioni di confronto, per apprendere modi diversi, quindi creativi, per fare le cose. Ringrazio tutti i giorni mio padre per avermi dato questa opportunità indimenticabile.

Cos'ha il Saint Martin College che non hanno altre scuole simili in Italia?

È uno dei college più famosi e blasonati nel campo delle arti. Il merito sta sia nel metodo innovativo di insegnamento che nelle iniziative di supporto ai giovani talenti. Al centro del suo sistema educativo c’è la sperimentazione e l'innovazione che incoraggiano la creatività individuale, la conoscenza e la crescita personale. L’indipendenza che ti viene data nello sviluppare i progetti è incredibile. In questo modo lo studente apre le proprie vedute e in qualche modo è costretto ad “arrangiarsi”.

Quando si potrà definire "soddisfatta" di questo progetto?

Mi sento sollevata che Sedici45 sia partita, ma ogni mattina mi sveglio con le farfalle nello stomaco per il lavoro che devo fare. La strada è ancora lunga.

Una frase ricorrente tra gli addetti ai lavori: le scarpe più belle le disegneranno sempre gli uomini, ma se parliamo di borse, solo una donna può capire quali sono le vere esigenze di chi ne acquista una. Concorda?

Concordo. Dentro una borsa c’è sempre l’anima di una donna, che va pensata, analizzata, studiata.

Come sceglie i materiali e gli accessori?

La scelta dei materiali è fondamentale, perché contraddistingue ogni singolo prodotto. Da anni visito fiere e ogni volta imparo tantissimo. Seguo molto il mio istinto e appena mi immagino una forma, la metto subito su carta. Mi piace coniugare la moda con il design, facendo nascere un prodotto emozionale, funzionale e tecnologico, secondo la migliore tradizione artigianale italiana. E prendo ispirazione da tutto quello che mi circonda, da quello che sento mio. ■

A demanding name With her Sedici45 range, Francesca Versace put the focus on leather goods.

She first trained at Saint Martin’s College and then got lots of valuable experience amid trade fairs, craftsmen and tanneries. hen you are young, motivated and have Versace as your surname, there’s only one way you can emerge based on your own merits, avoiding unsustainable comparisons and helpful shortcuts, and that is to choose a brand that expresses a concept. Francesca Versace found it in Sedici45, which refers to the year a treaty by the Abbot Agostino Lampugnani was published – precisely 1645 – which contained the word “fashion” used in the same way it is today. Giving up your family name does not mean becoming detached, her bond with her Dad Santo is solid just like her memories of her Uncle Gianni, who, even today, is still her stylistic point of reference. Francesca, however, tried to create a life for herself away from the Medusa brand, in complete independence, by abandoning Milan and going to train at Saint Martin’s in London, followed by a wonderful time spent in Asia, before moving back to Italy where she worked with Verri (menswear) and stepped up her know-how about materials, leather in particular. A few months ago, her dream, to create her own range of leather goods, finally came true. Her bags, presented at the last edition of PittiW, are a combination of quality, research, style and practicality.

Why leather goods exactly?

Because, since my schooldays and time at university, I have always been amused and fascinated by accessories. It’s a world where I feel there is a lot of room to express ones creativity. And then I simply love the smell of leather, a material that has extraordinary properties: durability, flexibility, water-resistance, not to mention the vast array of colours, textures and finishes that can be adapted to suit any style. It is one of those materials that, conceived and created in my own particular way, I used the most to make some of the pieces in my collection. For my “Ushuaia” travel bag, for example, I used leather reinforced with metal mesh to make it flexible yet, at the same time, resistant, seeing that not much attention is paid to luggage when travelling...

The bags are made 100% in Italy and, in particular, in the Tuscan leather goods district.

What "plus" does this decision guarantee?

The Tuscan leather pole stands out for its traditional craftsmanship skills, together with the quality of the materials and the attention to detail. Skills that make it possible to create a top quality product, that is rigorously ‘Made in Italy’ just like the Sedici45 range. One of the most interesting aspects is that a real working relationship is established with the craftsmen. The result is that you grow together whilst improving one of the world’s most coveted objects.

Where does your inspiration come from when designing a bag?

It comes exclusively from my own personal “bag of tricks”, from my love of travelling, my curiosity and my passion for nice things. Memories and personal experiences that become designs and products. I am still a “pencil” girl at heart and I feel fulfilled when I see piles and piles of my own sketches on my desk.

Are you planning on bringing out a shoe collection to go with your bags?

Bags are my departure point and my idea is to expand the brand 360 degrees. Yes, I also love shoes and I can’t wait to get started!

Why did you choose PittiW to present your collection?

I feel that PittiW was the perfect platform for the launch of my new brand because it is attentive over those projects that represent something completely new in the world of women and it stands out for the quality of its products.

And it also reminds me a bit of my Uncle Gianni.

Has your surname been a help or a hindrance?

I’ve undoubtedly got an important surname but my decision, conscious, was to “go it alone”, well aware of the difficulties that I would have to face. I would like and I want people to talk about the Sedici45 range not because it was designed by Francesca Versace but because it is high in content and distinctive. I believe that many people who came along to my stand at PittiW didn’t even know I was there, because they were so attracted by my bags.

You trained stylistically in London and, more than once, you have said that getting out of Italy is a fundamental step. Just because of a question of character or also experience?

It is a training opportunity that is worth a great deal, it enables you to be more competitive on the work front, to experiment with the ability to adapt to a new reality. An experience abroad, in most cases, is the best chance there is to grow as an individual, to be in a situation where you can make comparisons, to learn different and, therefore, creative ways of doing things.

I thank my Father every day for having given me this unforgettable opportunity.

What has Saint Martin’s College got that similar schools in Italy haven’t?

It is one of the most famous and blazoned when it comes to the arts. The merit lies in both the innovative teaching methods and the initiatives that help to support talented youngsters. At the centre of its educational system is experimentation and innovation which encourage individual creativity, awareness and personal growth. The independence that you are given when developing projects is incredible. In this way students can broaden their outlook and, in some way, they are forced to “get on with it”.

When do you think you will be "satisfied" with this project?

I am relieved that Sedici45 has got off the ground, but every morning I wake up with butterflies in my stomach because of all the work I have to do. There’s still a long way to go.

There’s one phrase that crops up all the time among ‘insider’s: the most beautiful shoes will always be designed by men, but when it comes to bags, only a woman can understand what the real needs are of the people who buy them. Would you agree?

I agree. Inside a bag there is always the soul of a woman, who needs to be thought about, analysed and studied.

How do you choose the materials and the accessories?

The choice of the materials is fundamental, because it characterises every individual product. For years now I have been going along to trade-fairs and every time I have always learnt such a lot. I follow my instincts a great deal and as soon as I imagine a shape, I put pen to paper straightaway. I like combining fashion and design, creating an emotional, functional and technological product, in keeping with the best Italian craftsmanship tradition. And I am inspired by everything that is around me, everything that I feel is part of me. ■

Il 15% della produzione calzaturiera della Riviera del Brenta, circa tre milioni di paia, viene effettuata per conto dei vari Vuitton, Dior, Chanel.

Ecco perché hanno scelto questo distretto, acquistando aziende e creandovi le loro basi stilistiche talians do it better, se parliamo di scarpe. Ne sono convinte le maison francesi, sempre più presenti nel distretto della Riviera del Brenta, a pochi chilometri dal centro storico di Venezia. Proprio qui, potendo scegliere tra quasi seicento piccole e medie aziende iperspecializzate, affidano la produzione della maggior parte delle loro paia griffate. E pazienza se non saranno “made in France”. In ballo non c'è la loro proverbiale grandeur, bensì moneta sonante: perché le conoscenze tecniche raggiunte nei secoli dagli artigiani veneziani costituiscono un patrimonio inarrivabile per i cugini d'oltralpe, che invece lo hanno perduto strada facendo nei loro vecchi poli di produzione. È stato lui, l'industriale “faro” del distretto calzaturiero brentano, il pioniere del patto con i francesi. segmento di alta qualità che possiamo ancora vendere a chiunque.

Grazie ai laboratori di terzisti e ai lavoranti a domicilio, siamo in grado di garantire una flessibilità produttiva funzionale alle griffes in concomitanza con mostre e sfilate importanti. Diversamente i vincoli giuslavoristici prettamente italiani, vedi statuto dei lavoratori, che ci hanno sempre equiparato alla grande industria nei rapporti coi dipendenti ci avrebbero continuamente penalizzati».

I numeri del 2010 descrivono una realtà comunque in trasformazione: un terzo (200 circa) delle aziende della Riviera del Brenta, dicono gli analisti, chiuderà nel breve periodo (400 hanno già cessato l'attività negli ultimi 10 anni) e l’incompletezza della filiera produttiva e la perdita di flessibilità penalizzeranno un po’ tutti. Un territorio che nel 2010 ha totalizzato 591 aziende (di cui 149 i calzaturifici), più di 10.500 occupati, 19,8 milioni di paia di scarpe prodotte – il 15% circa delle quali per conto dei francesi – e 1,65 miliardi di euro il fatturato complessivo. «Ma competenza, creatività, manualità e formazione – ribadisce l'ex presidente di Rossimoda, azienda ceduta una decina di anni fa proprio al gruppo Lvmh – continueranno ad essere le ricette del nostro successo».

Certo, difficilmente qualcuno verserà un giorno nelle décolleté a marchio francese il “venetissimo” prosecco al posto dello champagne, come faceva in maniera stravagante Edward VII nelle scarpe delle ballerine dell’Opera di Parigi (rito recentemente riscoperto e rilanciato da Christian Louboutin e Piper-Heidsieck grazie a una bottiglia in edizione speciale accompagnata da una scarpa di cristallo rossa). limitarsi a lavorare per loro, a fare i terzisti delle griffe, può risultare rischioso nel lungo periodo. «E allora avanti col marketing, col branding, col controllo di gestione – assicura Siro Badon, da poco presidente dell’associazione dei calzaturieri brentani – per dare continuità e competitività alle aziende del settore e soprattutto con le reti d’impresa, soggetto giuridico unico che raggruppa più società, chiamate a sviluppare sinergie tra imprese negli acquisti, nella promozione e nelle vendite». E un marchio “brentano” nel segmento lusso, col quale fare concorrenza alle griffe?

«Perché no, si può valutare, ma promuoverlo è costoso, molto. E allora perché non acquistarne uno già noto ed affermato?».

conquista francese. Bulgari è solo l'ultimo di una lunga serie che per Lvmh comprende Fendi ed Emilio Pucci, ma anche un gruppetto di calzaturifici gioiello, da Monique in Veneto a Manifattura Ferrarese in Emilia che oggi è la sua base produttiva e stilistica per l'uomo. Gucci, che con Domenico De Sole aveva creato l'unico grande polo del lusso italiano plurimarca (acquistando tra gli altri Bottega Veneta e proprio il grande Yves Saint Lauren), oggi appartiene a Ppr di François Pinault. E chissà se ne arriveranno altri.

Invece per i produttori locali iniziare da zero è quasi impossibile. Lo sa bene Rossi, che fu il primo a rinunciare definitivamente ai propri marchi per scegliere le licenze. «E poi un brand – sentenzia – non può limitarsi a fregiare le calzature. Per ergersi a status symbol deve fasciare borse, cinture e tutta l’accessoristica più cool del fashion,

quella che fa tendenza. Molto, molto impegnativo».

Intanto il distretto un po’ si francesizza. Nei brand delle scarpe, ma anche nel management dei calzaturifici.

Un esempio significativo è la Calto di Vigonovo, azienda denominata Trag fino al 2006 con 12 dipendenti e 70 paia di scarpe al giorno prodotte allora a marchio proprio e per conto di Dior, John Galliano e Gianfranco Ferrè. Da cinque anni è controllata al 100% da Christian Dior per il quale produce 300 paia di scarpe al giorno con 48 dipendenti. Thomas Giulio De Marco, trentasettenne parigino dalle chiare origini italiane, ne è direttore di produzione dal 2000.

ben oltre il medio periodo. Si è parte di un mercato globale che viene aggredito con strategie promozionali e di marketing consolidate ed efficaci.

E in questo i francesi sono più bravi degli italiani, che propongono prodotti di altissima qualità ma, di solito, senza adattarli e diversificarli nei mercati secondo gli usi e costumi del singolo Paese.

Al contrario, l’artigianato italiano della scarpa è inarrivabile per tutti, francesi compresi, che non a caso vengono in Riviera del Brenta. Gli italiani lavorano e creano con una qualità e una fantasia incomparabile». Calto delocalizza (non più in Tunisia, dopo lo scoppio delle recenti sommosse nei Paesi Arabi) gran parte dell'orlatura delle tomaie, per lo più all’estero e da ultimo in Bosnia Erzegovina.

«L’importante è che la qualità del “Made in Italy” sia tale e certificata dai

controllori Dior, così come viene avallata la bontà degli ambienti e dei contratti di lavoro. E’ solo una questione economica ed effettuare queste parziali lavorazioni lì costa meno».

Si spinge al punto da definire genetica la capacità dei calzaturieri italiani di produrre eccellenza. «È inspiegabile diversamente. Tuttavia devono fare attenzione a non patire troppo il mantenimento di manodopera specializzata, in un lavoro che gli italiani come tutti i giovani occidentali fanno fatica non solo a fare oggi ma soprattutto a contemplare tra le professioni possibili a cui dedicarsi domani».

E per questo, in Riviera del Brenta, l’Acrib può contare sul Politecnico Calzaturiero, che sforna corsi di tutti i tipi per professionalità diverse, da ultimo anche nel marketing e nella comunicazione. A la santè. ■

Luxury shoes 15% of all footwear production in Riviera del Brenta, around three million pairs, is made on behalf of various companies such as Vuitton, Dior and Chanel. This is why they chose this district, buying up companies and creating their own stylistic foundations there

talians do it better, when it comes to shoes. The French Maisons are convinced of this, which are becoming increasingly more numerous in the Riviera del Brenta district, just a few kilometres from the historic centre of Venice. It is precisely there, being able to choose from among almost six hundred small- and medium-sized super-specialised companies, that they entrust the production of most of their designer shoes. And who cares if they’re not “Made in France”. It’s not a question of their proverbial grandeur, but ready cash: because the level of technical skill reached over the centuries by Venetian craftsmen represents an unobtainable patrimony for Italy’s French cousins on the other side of the Alps, who, instead, have fallen behind by working in their old production poles. And French luxury needs this quality to be able to obtain the most beautiful shoes in the world, which then end up in boutiques that charge prices that would make your head spin, from LVMH, with all its brands, to PPR, from Chanel to emerging labels. «Oh yes, but we’re the ones who make the shoes for them» claimed Luigino Rossi, the man who the genial Andy Warhol – of whom he owns an enviable collection of drawings and sketches dedicated to the “snuggest-fitting” product there is – used to call Mr. Golden Shoes. He was the one, the industrial “guiding light” of the Brenta footwear district, the pioneer of the pact with the French.

I started out almost fifty years ago in partnership with the best there was in the business back then, the late lamented Yves Saint Laurent. Are they the ones who buy or are we the ones who sell quality produce? «I believe the truth lies somewhere in between. There is joint interest and we, however, sell under our terms and conditions». Mr. Rossi, already at the helm of the associations of local, national and European manufacturers, got straight to the crux of the matter. «On the one hand, the footwear industry in France is disappearing and, not by chance, Louis Vuitton and Christian Dior, to mention just two, opened factories years ago in Riviera del Brenta. On the other, there have never been, nor are there now, the financial, credit and system-based conditions (political and macro-economical) that are sufficient enough to set up, to the sound of Euros and marketing strategies, a “district brand” that is powerful and competitive enough on a planetary level. These days, with the economic crisis that has hit all industries, it is better to focus on both the know-how that we have, which we are not short of, and a top quality segment that we can still sell to everyone. Thanks to subcontractor-workshops and people who work from home, we are able to guarantee the brands’ functional productive flexibility in time for exhibitions and major fashion shows. If this was not the case, the mainly Italian employment law constraints, see the worker’s statute, which have always equalled us to great industry in our relationships with our employees, would have continuously penalised us».

Figures for 2010 depict a reality that is, however, in transformation: according to analysts, a third (approx. 200) of companies in Riviera del Brenta will close down before long (400 have already gone out of business over the last 10 years) and the incompleteness of the production chain and the loss of flexibility will penalise more or less everyone. In 2010, this area had a total of 591 companies (149 of which were shoe factories), more than 10,500 workers, 19.8 million pairs of shoes – around 15% of which were made on behalf of the French – and an overall turnover of 1.65 billion Euros. «But skill, creativity, manual dexterity and training – reaffirmed the exChairman of Rossimoda, a company which, about ten years ago, was taken over by the LVMH Group – will continue to be the recipe behind our success».

Obviously, it’s unlikely that one day someone will pour a glass of the “very Venetian” prosecco wine into a court shoe in place of champagne, as Edward 7th extravagantly did in the shoes of the ballet dancers at the Paris Opera House (a ritual that was recently rediscovered and re-launched by Christian Louboutin and Piper-Heidsieck thanks to a special edition bottle accompanied by a red glass slipper).

But limiting yourself to working for them, acting as subcontractors for the designer labels, can prove to be risky in the long run. «So, bring on the marketing strategies, the branding, with management control – assured Siro Badon, the recently elected President of the shoe manufacturers’ association in Brenta – to give continuity and competiveness to industrybased companies and, above all, the business network, the only legal entity that brings together several companies, called upon to create synergies between firms when it comes to purchasing, promoting and selling». And a “Brenta-based” brand in the luxury sector, so as to be able to compete with the designer labels? «Why not, it could be a possibility, but promoting it would be expensive, very expensive. And also why not buy one that is already well-known and successful?».

Exactly, why not? There is, actually, an explanation.

Over the last twenty years, Italian luxury brands have fallen into the hands of the French. Bulgari is only the latest on a long list of names which, for LVMH, includes brands such as Fendi and Emilio Pucci, but also a little group of amazing shoe factories, from Monique in Veneto to Manifattura Ferrarese in Emilia which is now where its productive and stylistic base is for the men’s range. Gucci, which with Domenico De Sole, had created the only large pole of multi-branded Italian luxury (buying out, among others, Bottega Veneta and the great Yves Saint Lauren company itself), now belongs to the PPR holding company owned by François Pinault. And who knows if others will turn up. Instead, for local manufacturers, starting from scratch is almost impossible.

Mr. Rossi knows this only too well, who was the first to definitively give up his own brands and opt for li-

censing agreements. «And, then, a brand – he said – cannot be limited to just turning out footwear. To emerge as a status symbol you have to make bags, belts and all the coolest fashion accessories, those that are considered trendy. Very, very demanding».

In the meantime, the district has started to get a bit ‘French’. Not only in the footwear brands, but also in the way the shoe factories are run. A good example here is Calto in Vigonovo, a company that, until 2006, was called Trag and had 12 employees turning out 70 pairs of shoes a day which, back then, were made under its own brand-name and also on behalf of Dior, John Galliano and Gianfranco Ferrè.

For five years now it has been controlled entirely by Christian Dior which it makes 300 pairs of shoes for per day and has 48 employees. Thomas Giulio De Marco, a thirty-seven-year-old Parisian with clearly Italian origins, has been the production manager since the year 2000. «Working for the Maisons – explained Mr. De Marco – offers guarantees in terms of the manufacturing rules, the timing and the job orders, with work prospects which, despite the crisis, go way beyond the mid-term. You are part of a global market which is bombarded with promotional and marketing strategies that are both consolidated and effective. And the French are much better than the Italians at all of this, who supply products that are extremely high quality but, usually, without adapting them or diversifying them to suit the various markets in line with the habits and customs of the individual countries. On the contrary, the level of craftsmanship in the Italian footwear industry is out of everyone’s reach, the French included, who, not by chance, come to Riviera del Brenta. The Italians work and create with levels of quality and imagination that are without comparison». Calto delocalises (no longer in Tunisia, after the outbreak of the recent uprisings in Arab Countries) much of the hemming of the uppers to countries that are mainly abroad, the most recent being Bosnia-Herzegovina. «The main thing is that the quality of “Made in Italy” produce is high and certified by Dior inspectors, just as the excellence of the working conditions and employment contracts are guaranteed. It’s just a question of money and having these little jobs done there costs less». The point could be raised that the skill of Italian shoe manufacturers, when it comes to turning out excellence, is considered genetic. «How else could you explain it. Nevertheless, they have to be careful not to lose the skilled labour, in a job that the Italians, just like all Western youngsters, not only struggle to do but, above all, do not even consider among their possible career choices for the future».

And this is why, in Riviera del Brenta, the ACRIB (Riviera del Brenta Shoe Manufacturers’ Association) can count on the Politecnico Calzaturiero/Footwear Polytechnic, which offers courses for all types of different careers, the latest being a course on marketing and communication. A la santè. ■

Area51, conceria di Arzignano con consolidata specializzazione in pelletteria e calzatura, ma presente anche nel mondo dell’arredamento di alta gamma, ha lanciato il nuovo marchio lo scorso Ottobre a Linea Pelle.

Il nome Area51 si ispira alla leggendaria base aeronautica nel deserto del Nevada (USA), un luogo segreto che evoca l’idea di ricerca e alta tecnologia, leve ispiratrici dell’azienda.

Per l’occasione Area51 ha scelto un partner della fantasia creativa di Viapiranesi, che con Dreamland, l’installazione presso lo stand della fiera – un interno misterioso in cui sbirciare - ha interpretato lo spirito trasgressivo, provocatorio e originale dell’azienda.

Area51 presenta l’installazione con l’intento di indagare sulle possibilità della pelle di creare nuovi spazi ricercando al contempo una dimensione etica sia nella materia, sia nella costruzione: la matrice è realizzata usando gli scarti di produzione, rifili di wet blue che diventano efflorescenze di pelle, una scoria che si tramuta in energia pura, in possibilità ri-generativa.

L’installazione è stata realizzata con la collaborazione della sartoria della Cooperativa Alice di Milano che opera per il reinserimento lavorativo delle detenute ed ex-detenute di San Vittore.

Area51 ha inteso creare per la fiera percorsi di colore e materia che il visitatore potesse esplorare liberamente, sperimentandone gli effetti emozionali.

Quattro le gamme scelte: il rosso-energia nei toni del mattone, il verde-clorofilla, il viola-magia e il marrone luminoso delle terre di Siena. Leader nella produzione di pelli naturali (aniline, leggere rifinizioni, stampe su aniline…) a LineaPelle ha presentato stampe di sinuosi disegni di animali del deserto; mani morbide, piene, scariche e setose al tatto; superfici che richiamano la natura selvaggia, incontaminata, cortecce, foglie e terra.

Sono materiali che escono dalla bidimensionalità per creare effetti di morbide grinze e di intreccio, tagli regolari o squame.

Sono vernici, come specchi d’acqua, e superfici opache spazzolabili, a suggerire effetti di materiali vissuti.

Area51, tannery in Arzignano specialized in bags and shoes leather but also known in the high-end upholstery world, launched last October the new brand at LineaPelle fair.

The name comes from the legendary base in the Nevada desert (USA): a secret place evocating research and high technology which are the inspiring prizes of the company.

Area51 chose for the launch a partner with a strong creative imagination like Viapiranesi that with Dreamland, the installation Art at the stand – a mysterious inner space where to peep – interpreted the unconventional and provocative spirit of the company.

Area51 presents the Installation Art with the idea of investigating the possibilities of a material like leather to create new spaces looking at the same time for an ethical dimension both in the material and in the manufacturing: the matrix is made using the scraps of production, wet blue trimmings which become efflorescence of leather, a scum transforming into pure energy, into re-generative chance.

The Installation Art is made with the cooperation of Cooperativa Alice that operates for the reintegration into working life of the prisoners and ex-prisoners of the county penitentiary.

Area51 meant to create for the fair colors and material paths that the visitor could explore in freedom, experiencing the emotional effects.

Four ranges of colors: the red-energy, the green- chlorophyll, the purple-magic, the bright brown of Siena earths.

Leader in the production of natural leather (aniline, embossed aniline, light finishing…) the company showed at LineaPelle desert animals sinuous embossed patterns; soft, full hands with light, silky touch; surfaces recalling wild nature, barks, leaves and earth. They are materials getting out the bidimensionality in order to create soft creases and weaving effects, regular cuts or scales. They are patent-leathers, like water mirrors, and mat, brushable surfaces to suggest effects of worn-out materials.

«Q

uando la disegno, immagino una donna superfemminile, con un “pudore sexy”, sensuale, ma mai volgare».

Cesare Paciotti è un'icona per le amanti delle calzature e dei tacchi vertiginosi. Provengono da ogni parte del mondo, ognuna con la sua specifica cultura e forma del piede, ma con un desiderio radicato: indossare quelle scarpe, magari il modello con la boccetta di profumo nel tacco. Basta slacciare un mini cinturino per prelevare un piccolo contenitore pieno della fragranza Essence, si spruzza quel tanto che basta e lo si rimette al proprio posto.

«Nella mia idea di scarpa da donna, il tacco è un particolare che curo con estrema attenzione» puntualizza lo stilista e produttore di Civitanova Marche.

«Infatti è la base naturale della gamba di una donna. Se ne guardo una camminare sui tacchi e a fianco ce n’è una senza, mi viene quasi da pensare che quegli accessori siano una dimenticanza di Dio a cui gli stilisti di calzature hanno rimediato, restituendo alla gamba della donna l'eleganza che le è propria».

Guai a parlargli di misura 70 («Le scarpe sembrano sedute e non slanciate») o 80 («Qualche anno fa era il top, ora sembra un tacco segato»): per lui si comincia a ragionare dai 100120 in su, altezza che avvicina la

donna al cielo, conferendole un'aria di sicurezza e di sensuale aggressività. È il tacco che esalta la donna la quale, a sua volta, valorizza la calzatura. Ed è anche grazie a questo binomio che il brand Paciotti si è fatto strada nel mondo del jet set e delle celebrities.

Chiedere per esempio a Carla Bruni, che nel 1997 fu scelta dallo stilista come modella di riferimento e continuò la collaborazione per più collezioni: un paio di scarpe ispirato alla première dame francese ne porta tuttora il nome. Ma la prima vera donna di Ce-

sare non è una diva del cinema o della televisione. Nessuna di esse sarebbe in grado di reggere il confronto con mamma Cecilia che, rimasta vedova quando era ancora un bambino, lo ha educato ai valori della vita e del lavoro.

«Ciò che mi spinge ad amare e a comprendere, a quanto pare così bene, le donne – risponde – non è certo un amore "bramoso", ma un sentimento nato da quello che mia madre e mia sorella Paola, anche lei sempre al mio fianco, mi hanno trasmesso: la bellezza della forza delle donne è mag-

Quella di Paciotti è la storia di chi ce l'ha fatta: un figlio di semplici artigiani calzaturieri che diventa protagonista del made in Italy nel mondo. Il re dello stiletto è nato a Civitanova Marche nel 1956 da Cecilia e Giuseppe Paciotti, che dal 1948 guidavano un'azienda di produzione artigianale di scarpe, la Paris snc. Appassionato di musica rock, mette da parte Rolling Stones e Jimi Hendrix per iscriversi al Dams di Bologna, poi inizia a viaggiare per il mondo, sviluppando la propria sensibilità artistica. Torna in Italia pieno di idee ed entusiasmo e nel 1980 fonda la Paciotti Spa. La sua prima collezione è dedicata agli uomini. La linea che porta il suo nome esprime creatività ed eleganza, ma anche una qualità legata ad uno stile provocatorio: saranno queste le chiavi del successo del marchio Cesare Paciotti rappresentato da un pugnale: lo stiletto. «E' iniziato come semplice esercizio stilistico. Si parlava di segni zodiacali e altri argomenti banali e da qui è nata questa arma gentile, acuta ma non d'assalto.

cile». Nel 1983 inizia a collaborare con maison d'alta moda come Armani, Versace e Gigli, realizzando modelli per le loro sfilate. Nel 1990 decide di sviluppare delle collezioni femminili, incoraggiato dal successo dei primi prototipi. La volontà di dare alle donne un elemento di distinzione lo spinge a sviluppare dettagli sensuali: tacchi altissimi, curve affascinanti, tagli provocatori e materie carnali, ma anche nuove tecniche per innovare e sublimare la femminilità. È il trampolino di lancio della linea unisex Paciotti 4US, dedicata allo sport e al tempo libero.

Da lì in poi le boutique, gli accessori e il total look richiesto dai consumatori finali. Il core business rimane la calzatura, tutto il resto partecipa alla realizzazione di un fatturato che è per il 60% realizzato in Italia e per il restante 40% dipende perlopiù da Medio ed Estremo Oriente. Oggi l'azienda conta oltre 250 dipendenti diretti e un indotto di 1200 persone, per un fatturato di oltre 140 milioni di euro.

Qual è il bilancio dei primi nove mesi 2011 e quali le prospettive per il 2012?

Naturalmente, in questi tempi di crisi, dire che il bilancio del 2011 sia stato

positivo è relativo. Anche se il prodotto Cesare Paciotti non ha subito flessioni, le difficoltà ci sono: molti nostri clienti si trovano a dover fronteggiare un calo generale dei consumi che lascia stracolmi i loro magazzini, spesso “imbottiti” a forza pur di mantenere certe linee o certi altri nomi.

Quindi al momento ci stiamo dirigendo sul rafforzamento e mantenimento delle posizioni guadagnate nel mercato della calzatura e nell’espansione in diversi settori.

Quali strategie sta attuando la sua azienda per essere sempre più competitiva?

È mirata, come dicevo, al rafforzamento e al mantenimento delle posizioni già acquisite e allo sbocco su “mercati nuovi” sia dal punto di vista geografico che di prodotto.

Oltre la calzatura?

Già da tempo credo che nel mercato attuale non basti più vendere un prodotto valido, ma sia necessario trasmettere qualcosa: diciamo una filosofia, un lifestyle, di cui non solo le calzature debbano esserne interpreti, ma anche le borse, altri accessori o l’abbigliamento, i gioielli, il profumo ecc. Per questo oggi c’è anche una collezione casa Cesare Paciotti, che potrà trasmettere ai miei clienti la stessa atmosfera che amano nelle mie boutique e vivere veramente in un mondo che hanno dimostrato di apprezzare.

Vede meno possibilità per le calzature e più per altri prodotti?

Dalle scarpe sono partiti i miei genitori e non ho la minima intenzione di mettere meno cura in questo settore.

Raggiunti certi livelli, ritengo però che i margini di crescita diventino limitati e

non possano più far sperare nel boom che mi ha portato il successo attuale.

Credo quindi che se, come me, non si è solo imprenditori, ma in qualche modo “creatori”, sia naturale sentire il bisogno ed avere la voglia di esprimersi in settori diversi, come appunto l’abbigliamento, i gioielli, gli occhiali, il profumo, l’arredamento.

Quando pensa al futuro pensa anche ad un collocamento in Borsa?

Sarò pure per certi versi “provinciale”, ma la quotazione mi lascia un po’ perplesso, seppure rappresenti il naturale punto d’arrivo di un’azienda che ha avuto successo e ha ancora voglia di espandersi. Comunque, pur non essendo una delle priorità, da qualche anno faccio in modo, insieme a consulenti che hanno approfondito questa tematica per conto della mia società, che i nostri bilanci e determinati parametri mi permettano di affacciarmi sul mercato azionario.

Ritiene sia ancora possibile fare impresa in Italia?

Innegabilmente è sempre più difficile, anche per un prodotto in qualche modo elitario come il mio. Ma ci stiamo sempre più e un po’ tutti muovendo verso una democratizzazione del lusso, naturalmente senza perdere l’essenza di esclusività insita in esso.

Entriamo nella politica fieristica dell’azienda: partecipate, con diversi obiettivi e collezioni, sia a Micam che a Pitti. Qual è il suo giudizio sulla partecipazione e quali sono le differenze in termini di risultato?

Ritengo sia fondamentale tenere bene a mente gli obiettivi e, per ciascuna tipologia di prodotto, individuare quale sia la miglior forma di presentazione. Infatti, se da un lato qualsiasi fiera sarebbe inadatta al prodotto ed al negoziante Cesare Paciotti, che ha bisogno della calma e dell’intimità di uno show room in cui la collezione può essere valutata ed apprezzata al suo meglio, dall'altro Paciotti 4US ha il suo naturale palcoscenico al Pitti di Firenze e alla stessa stregua la collezione casa non può non essere presentata al Salone del Mobile.

Quindi credo che, una volta individuato il canale giusto, i risultati, se di un buon lavoro, arrivino conseguentemente.

Quali sono le scelte aziendali per quanto riguarda gli acquisti, in particolare le pelli?

Oltre a determinati pellami che sono ormai dei nostri must sia per la loro qualità e sia per i risultati che ci hanno sempre offerto, un’azienda di moda non può ancorarsi semplicemente su prodotti conosciuti e di sicuro successo, così avverto l'esigenza in ogni stagione di provare qualche soluzione innovativa per delle nuove tipologie di scarpe. A volte sono proprio nuove tipologie di pellame che mi danno l’ispirazione per una nuova creazione.

Qual è il suo attuale posizionamento sul mercato cinese e come intende svilupparlo?

Finora ho sempre voluto trattare la Cina al pari di altri mercati: entrandoci in punta di piedi, in modo tale che, proprio nella patria dei prodotti contraffatti, il mio non fosse subito considerato di

massa e quindi perdesse il suo appeal.

Ho preferito servire solo alcuni clienti particolarmente interessanti e aprire solo qualche “boutique test”. Ora però che i consumatori cinesi hanno cominciato a richiederli in maniera più massiccia, ho preferito creare diverse reti distributive in modo tale da non far perdere l’identità al manufatto e al tempo stesso “coprire” al meglio le singole zone, di per sé già molto vaste. Tutto ciò per non correre il rischio di buttarsi in un grande calderone che avrebbe potuto portare maggiori e più facili guadagni all’inizio, depauperando però allo stesso tempo il marchio.

Qual è il maggiore problema che sta affrontando adesso?

Forse è banale ciò che mi appresto a dire, ma il problema più immediato è quello delle riscossioni. Possiamo quasi affermare che siamo diventati le banche

dei nostri clienti, magari quelli storici, che hanno effettuato importanti investimenti per rimanere al passo con i tempi e con la moda, ma che escono strozzati da questa crisi. Ad alcuni, quelli che hanno fatto la nostra fortuna, vogliamo e dobbiamo dare fiducia; altri però sembrano volerci “marciare un po’ troppo”, su questa crisi.

Qual è la sua posizione sul made in Italy e il suo pensiero sulle varie frodi al consumatore in tale ambito (etichette applicate a scarpe d'importazione ecc.)?

Mi pregio di marcare “made in Italy” solo i prodotti interamente realizzati in Italia, senza ricorrere a quei sotterfugi, come inserire una soletta made in Italy in una scarpa realizzata interamente in Cina o in Romania, che la legge consente ad alcuni dei miei competitor, che poi escono sul mercato con falsi made in Italy. ■

The King Stiletto Heels? Overlooked by God, put right by designers. Women?

The beauty of their power is greater than the power of their beauty.

These are the thoughts of one of the main players of shoe-manufacturing style, who also managed to create a leading company

hen I design her, I imagine a super-feminine woman, with “sexy modesty”, sensual but never vulgar». Cesare Paciotti is an icon for lovers of shoes and head-spinning heels. They come from all over the world, each with their own specific culture and shape of foot, but they all have a wellrooted desire: to wear those shoes, perhaps the model which comes with a little bottle of perfume in the heel. Just undo a mini strap to remove a little container full of the fragrance Essence, spray just what you need and then put it back in its place.

«In my idea of a woman’s shoe, the heel is a detail that I take a great deal of care over» stressed the designer and manufacturer from Civitanova Marche.

«In fact, it is the natural base for a woman’s leg. If you watch one woman walking in heels and one next to her who isn’t, it almost makes me think that those accessories had been overlooked by God which shoe designers have put right, giving women’s legs back that elegance that they deserve».

Woe betide if you talk about a size 70 («The shoes just seem to sit there and don’t look slender») or 80 («A few years ago it was the top, now it looks like a sawn-off heel»): he only starts to see reason when talking of 100-120 upwards, a height which raises the woman up to the skies, giving her an air of confidence and sensual aggressiveness. It is the heel that enhances the woman who, in turn, enhances the shoe. And it is also thanks to this combination that the Paciotti brand has come a long way in the world of jetsetters and celebrities. Ask Carla Bruni for example, who, in 1997 was picked by the designer as the reference model and continued the collaboration for a number of collections: a pair of shoes inspired by France’s First Lady still bears her name. But Cesare’s first real woman is not a cinema or television diva. None of them would be able to withstand the comparison with his mother Cecilia who, widowed when he was just a child, taught him the values of life and work. «The thing that encourages me to love and understand women, and do it very well it would seem – he replied – is certainly not a "desirous" love, but a feeling borne out of what my Mother and my sister Paola, who is always by my side, passed onto me: the beauty of the power of women is greater than the power of their beauty».

The story of Mr. Paciotti is that of someone who has made it: the son of simple shoemakers who went on to become a leading light of ‘Made in Italy’ throughout the world. The King of the stiletto was born in Civitanova Marche in 1956 to Cecilia and Giuseppe Paciotti, who, since 1948, ran a shoe-manufacturing company, namely the Paris snc company. Despite being a keen fan of rock music, he put the Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix to one side to sign up for a DAMS course in Bologna, then he started to travel the world, developing his own artistic sensitivity. When he got back to Italy he was full of ideas and enthusiasm and, in 1980, he founded the Paciotti Spa company. His first collection was dedicated to men. The range that bears his name expresses creativity and elegance, but also a level of quality that is linked to a provocative style: could this be the key to success for the Cesare Paciotti brand which is represented by a fist. «It all began as a simple stylistic exercise. There was talk of signs of the zodiac and other banal topics and from here came this gentle weapon, forceful but not offensive». In 1983 he began collaborating with haute couture Maisons such as Armani, Versace and Gigli, making models for their fashion shows. In 1990 he decided to develop women’s collections, spurred on by the success of the first prototypes. The desire to give

women an element of distinction led him to develop sensual details: extremely high heels, fascinating curves, provocative cuts and carnal materials, but also new techniques used to innovate and sublime femininity. It was the launch pad for the Paciotti 4US unisex range, dedicated to both sport and free time.

From thereon in came the boutiques, the accessories and the ‘total look’ as requested by the end customers. The core business is still footwear, with the others ranges making up the turnover, 60% of which comes from Italy with the remaining 40% coming mainly from the Mid and Far East. These days, the company can count on more than 250 direct employees and a total workforce of 1,200 people, with a turnover of more than 140 million Euros.

How is the balance-sheet looking for the first nine months of 2011 and what are the forecasts for 2012?

Obviously, in these times of crisis, to say that the balance-sheet for 2011 has been positive is relative.

Even though Cesare Paciotti products have not decreased in any way, there a number of difficulties: many of our customers find themselves having to face a general drop in consumption levels which leaves their warehouses full to bursting, often “packed out” just so as to maintain certain ranges or certain other brands. Therefore, at the moment we are focusing on reinforcing and maintaining the positions we have reached on the footwear market as well as expanding within various other sectors.

What strategies is your company implementing to make sure that it always remains competitive?

Everything is geared, as I said, towards reinforcing and maintaining the positions that we have already reached and branching out onto “new markets” from both a geographical and product type point of view.

Besides footwear?

For quite some time now I have felt that it’s not enough just to see a sound product on today’s market, you need to convey something else: a philosophy, let’s say, or a lifestyle, where not just shoes should act as interpreters, but also bags, other accessories or clothing, jewellery, perfume, etc. This is why, there is now also a Cesare Paciotti homeware collection which helps my customers to feel the same atmosphere that they love so much in my boutiques at home and actually live in a world that they have shown to appreciate.

Do you see fewer possibilities for shoes and more for other products?

My parents started me off on making shoes and I have no intention whatsoever of paying less attention to this industry. Upon reaching certain levels, however, I feel that the growth margins become limited and people can no longer hope for a boom that made me the success that I am today. Therefore, I believe that, if you’re like me, not just an entrepreneur, but in some way a “creator”, it’s only natural to feel the need to have the desire to express yourself in various sectors, like clothing, jewellery, eyewear, perfume and interior design.

When you think to the future do you also think about a stock-exchange placing?

I may, in certain ways, be “provincial”, but quotation leaves me somewhat perplexed, even though it represents the natural point of arrival for a company that has been successful and still wants to continue

to expand. However, despite it not being a priority, I have been working for a few years now, together with my advisers who have investigated this situation on behalf of my company, so that our balancesheets and certain parameters enable me to look to the stock market.

Do you think it’s still possible to do business in Italy?

Undeniably, it’s getting more and more difficult, also for a somewhat elitist product like mine. But there are more and more of us and we are all heading someway towards a democratisation of luxury, obviously without losing the essence of exclusivity that comes with it.

Let’s talk about the company’s trade-fair policy: do you take part, with different goals and collections, in both Micam and Pitti?

What’s your opinion on taking part and what are the differences in terms of results?

I feel that it is fundamental to keep sight of all the goals and, for each product type, find the best form of presentation. In fact, there is no trade-fair that is suitable for the product and the retailer Cesare Paciotti, who needs the calm and intimacy of a showroom where the collection can be evaluated and fully appreciated, but, having said that, Paciotti 4US has its natural stage at Pitti in Florence just like the homeware collection has to be presented at the Furniture Show. So, I believe that, once the right channel has been found, the results, if you’ve done your homework properly, are a natural progression.

What are the corporate decisions when it comes to purchasing, leather in particular?

Besides certain hides that are our ‘musts’ due to their quality and the results that can be achieved, a fashion house cannot be anchored simply to known products that are a safe bet, so every season I feel the need to try a number of innovative solutions for new types of shoes. At times it is precisely the new hides that are the inspiration for a new creation.

What is your current position on the Chinese market and how are you planning to develop it?

Until now, I have always treated China in the same way as the other markets: that is by taking things slowly so that, right there in the land of counterfeited products, my work was not considered straightaway as something for the masses as that would have made it lose its appeal. I preferred to sell to only a few particularly interesting customers and open just a few “test boutiques”. Now, though, that Chinese customers have started to ask for them in a more widespread way, I preferred to set up a number of different distribution networks so that the product does not lose its identity and, at the same time, “cover” the individual areas better, which, in themselves, are already extremely vast. All this so as not to run the risk of diving into a melting pot that would have meant much more and much easier income at the start, but which would have also impoverished the brand.

What is the biggest problem that you are up against at the moment?

I might seem banal, but the most immediate problem is that of getting paid. We could say that we are almost like a bank for our customers, perhaps those historical ones, that made major investments to keep up with the times and fashions but which have ended up being strangled by this crisis. For some of them, those that helped us to make our fortune, we want to and we have to trust them; others, however, seem to want to blame everything on this crisis.

What is your position when it comes to ‘Made in Italy’ and your thoughts about the various acts of customer fraud in these circles (labels on imported shoes, etc.)?

I’m honoured to say that I only label as ‘Made in Italy’ my products that are made entirely in Italy, without resorting to those little tricks, like putting a ‘Made in Italy’ insole into a shoe that was made entirely in China or Romania, that the law allows some of my competitors to do and which then end up on the fake ‘Made in Italy’ market. ■

La crescita è in Far East, ne sono tutti certi.

Di conseguenza le aziende della moda pianificano le politiche commerciali dei prossimi anni, dal lusso alla fascia media, per recuperare il tempo perduto l mercato mondiale dell’abbigliamento, rimodellato dall’esodo della manifattura verso Paesi a basso costo di manodopera, sta ripensando se stesso e trovando linfa – guarda un po’ – grazie a quegli stessi partner.

Prima della recessione del 2008 non sarebbe stato pensabile, in casa Nike, incamerare un incremento di ordini del 24% perdendo contemporaneamente quota in Giappone (-13%) e stentando in casa. Né era immaginabile che Coach aprisse negozi a Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia, Sao Paolo, Ho Chi Minh e Hanoi. Ma la ricerca di mercati emergenti non nasce soltanto dall’esigenza di compensare le mancate vendite in quelli tradizionali. I motivi per cui il business statunitense di calzatura e accessori sta sbarcando nei Paesi in via di sviluppo sono più saldamente ancorati a due fattori: la nuova demografia e l’estensione del benessere.

Frank Zambrelli, assistente di Accessory Design al Fashion Institute of Technology di New York nonché stilista (ha lavorato per Chanel, Varvatos, Cole Haan e lanciato la calzatura di Coach), spiega il fascino di India e Cina: «Certo,

soltanto il 5% della popolazione si sta avvicinando agli standard economici della classe media. Parliamo però di 155 milioni di persone. Poiché queste due economie viaggiano a una velocità superiore al 5%, le opportunità dei prossimi dieci anni si possono soltanto immaginare».

Cina, India, Russia e Brasile, seguite da Tailandia e Turchia in seconda battuta, registrano elevatissimi tassi di natalità. La popolazione della Cina (un miliardo e 330 milioni di abitanti) ha il 19,8 per cento di giovani, l’8,1 di anziani. In India siamo rispettivamente a 30,5 e 5,2 per cento, in Brasile i giovani costituiscono il 26,7 per cento della popolazione, gli anziani il 6,4.

Nelle nazioni dell’N11 (Bangladesh, Corea del Sud, Egitto, Indonesia, Iran, Messico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Filippine, Turchia, Vietnam) l’età media è inferiore ai trent’anni. In sintesi, giovani consumatori crescono.

Il secondo fattore affonda le radici nel popolamento delle aree urbane: «Negli ultimi cinque anni, sei delle dieci maggiori città al mondo hanno aggiunto sei milioni a testa di abitanti. E si trovano tutte in Far East». L’osservazione è di Gina Drosos, presidente di P&G Beauty, un settore – quello della cosmetica – che sta invadendo i mercati emergenti con la stessa avidità di calzature e accessori.

celebrità, fattore sempre meno incisivo in quelle occidentali (vedi la scomparsa di Britney Spears), dove la stagnazione degli acquisti consolida tradizione e qualità. Ecco perché Paris Hilton, la trentenne “cantante-attrice-ereditierapersonaggio Tv”, ha appena lanciato la sua linea di borse a Mumbai e non a New York. Nel mercato indiano infatti gli accessori viaggiano a tassi di crescita del 35%, diventando «l’aspirazione principale dei consumatori che scalano i livelli sociali», sottolinea Abhinav Kumar, capo di Brand Concept.

«In un Paese con una potenziale classe media formata da 400 milioni di persone che si stanno rapidamente educando alla moda, questi sono numeri da prendere in seria considerazione». In cinque anni la bella Paris aprirà oltre 50 negozi con format diversi. Il primo, a New Delhi, assocerà i prodotti da viaggio di Tommy Hilfiger alle sue borse (prezzi: 7 mila rupie, ovvero 150 dollari). Il target è la donna di età inferiore ai 30 anni. Gli analisti non nascondono le ragioni per cui l’India continua a essere guardata con scetticismo: una politica governativa che limita gli investimenti esteri; la scarsità di centri commerciali; tasse elevatissime sulle importazioni e mediocri infrastrutture. Intanto però il numero di

cittadini che si possono permettere prodotti ad alto costo cresce annualmente del 15% e sono per la maggior parte uomini. Il Paese è monopolizzato da due città, Mumbai e Delhi, ragion per cui il distributore di Jimmy Choo ha deciso di abbandonare dopo appena due anni: «Affitti stratosferici e propensione agli acquisti del lusso al di fuori dai confini» lo hanno scoraggiato da Morjani Group. Il trend per la calzatura sportiva è diverso. Kate McShane, direttrice di Citi Investment Research, ritiene: «Anche per i colossi della sneaker in Brasile e India ci sono buoni margini di crescita».

Per alcune aziende del medio-alto, il termine ‘emerging markets’ varia. Steven Madden vanta aumenti del 50% tra India, Emirati Arabi e Benelux; al di fuori degli Usa però raccoglie solo il 5% del fatturato. Deckers dovrebbe aprire 15 negozi entro la fine dell’anno, la maggior parte dei quali in Asia.

Jones Group adocchia Europa e America Latina. Jones New York è sbarcata in Spagna e Messico, mentre Nine West «ha ancora spazi in Brasile, Cina, India, Russia e altre nazioni emergenti» conclude l’amministratore delegato, Wesley Card. «C’è un’eccitazione, in questi luoghi, che i mercati tradizionali sembrano aver smarrito – dice lo stilista Michael Kors – perché dieci anni fa i loro abitanti indossavano abiti scadenti, ora comprendono il glamour. In Russia quindici anni fa si vendeva solo ultralusso, oggi ci si veste casual».

Siva Yam da dieci anni presiede la camera di commercio sino-americana e spiega come nel frattempo sono cambiate le cose: «All’inizio del mio mandato le aziende statunitensi chiedevano di essere assistite nell’autosourcing. Adesso pensano solo ad andare in Cina per vendere. Se parliamo del mercato del lusso, sebbene la media del reddito sia di mille dollari annui, di gente che ha il potere di acquisto necessario ce n’è tanta. In dieci anni il 40% del consumo del lusso mondiale sarà effettuato dai cinesi. Per quelli di fascia media occorre invece attendere più a lungo». Yam si addentra nelle dinamiche sociali: «Da noi si è molto sensibili a cosa indossano le star dello spettacolo e i personaggi in vista: vige la regola di status e simboli. Se un leader politico fuma una sigaretta o indossa un abito di marca, ecco che

quel prodotto diventa un ‘must’. Una persona che non veste in modo appropriato, o che non indossa abiti alla moda, può essere esclusa dagli affari.

Per questo esiste una corsa ai prodotti di lusso italiani, francesi e in parte inglesi. Le uniche aziende americane in auge sono Coach e Polo. Non si vedono auto americane, mentre le americane Marlboro, che dominarono il mercato, oggi sono state rimpiazzate dalle costosissime sigarette cinesi Panda, fumate dell’estabilishment politico. Di americano c’è Nike, ma anche lei deve misurarsi con una forte concorrenza».

Esportare in un mercato così avido di consumismo occidentale non è esente da rischi: «I prodotti americani sono sconosciuti e occorre un significativo sforzo di marketing – conclude – E poi si incorre facilmente nella violazione dei diritti commerciali».

Zambrelli esplora le differenze più significative tra mercato di fascia media e alta: «Un’azienda di borse deve adattare il prodotto ai gusti locali, come manici più o meno lunghi, dimensioni usate localmente, caratteristiche e colori che abbiano significato in quel contesto territoriale. Di riverso, una marca francese o italiana di lusso è chiamata a modifiche minori (larghezza del portafoglio rispetto alle dimensioni delle banconote o delle carte d’identità), poiché deve difendere il suo prestigio. L’argomento più convincente della ricerca di nuovi mercati resta comunque quello legato alle loro potenzialità economiche. Mentre Stati Uniti, Giappone ed Europa vivono momenti difficili per crescita e fiducia dei consumatori, la Cina ha visto una crescita del Pil pari al 10% nel 2010 e ne proietta una dell’8,7 a fine anno. The American route Growth lies in the Far East, everyone agrees on that.

As a result, fashion houses are planning their business policies for the next few years, from the luxury to mid-range,so as to be able to catch up on lost time he world’s clothing market, remodelled by the exodus of manufacturing towards countries where labour costs a lot less, is having a re-think and has found a lifeline – strangely enough – in those self-same partners.

Before the recession in 2008 it would have been unimaginable, for Nike, to witness an increase in orders of 24%, whilst, at the same time, losing market shares in Japan (-13%) and struggling at home.

It was unimaginable that Coach would open stores in Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia, Sao Paolo, Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi. But the search for emerging markets has not come about just because of the need to compensate for the loss of sales in traditional circles. The reasons why the American footwear and accessory business is edging its way into developing countries are firmly linked to two factors: the new demography and the increase in wellbeing.

Frank Zambrelli, the Accessory Design Assistant at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and designer (he has worked for Chanel, Varvatos, Cole Haan and launched the Coach shoe),explained the charm of India and China: «Obviously, only 5% of the population is anywhere near the economic standards of the middle-class. But, even so, we are talking about 155 million people. As these two economies are travelling at a rate in excess of 5%, you can only imagine the opportunities that will crop up over the next ten years».

China, India, Russia and Brazil, with Thailand and Turkey at the rear, are witnessing an extremely high increase in the birth rate. The population in China (one billion, 300 million inhabitants) has 19.8 percent of young people and 8.1 of old people. In India the figures are, respectively, 30.5 and 5.2 percent, whereas in Brazil young people make up 26.7 percent of the population, and the elderly 6.4.

In N11 countries (Bangladesh, South Korea, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, Turkey and Vietnam) the average age is under thirty. In short, the number of young consumers is on the increase.

The second factor has its roots in the population in urban areas: «Over the last five years, six of the world’s top ten cities all saw an increase of six million inhabitants. And they are all to be found in the Far East». This observation comes from Gina Drosos, the President of P&G Beauty, an industry – that of cosmetics – which is invading emerging markets with the same avidness as shoes and accessories.

These new marketplaces are sensitive to celebrities, a factor that is becoming less and less incisive on Western markets (take the disappearance of Britney Spears), where the stagnation in purchases consolidates tradition and quality. This is why Paris Hilton, the 30-year-old “singer-actress-heiress-TV personality”, recently launched her range of bags in Mumbai and not in New York. In fact, on the Indian market, accessories have a 35% growth rate becoming «the main aspiration for consumers who are scaling the social levels», pointed out Abhinav Kumar, the boss of Brand Concept. «In a country with a potential middle-class of 400 million people who are rapidly learning all there is to know about

fashion, these figures need taking into serious consideration». Over the next five years the beautiful Paris will be opening more than 50 stores in different formats. The first, in New Delhi, will combine the travel range from Tommy Hilfiger with her own bags (prices: 7,000 rupees, or rather 150 dollars). The target group is women under 30. Analysts do not hide the reasons why India is still looked upon with a certain scepticism: a governmental policy that limits foreign investments; the shortage of shopping centres; extremely high taxes on imports and mediocre infrastructures. In the meantime, though, the number of inhabitants who can afford expensive products is increasing annually by 15% and most of them are men. The country is monopolised by two cities, Mumbai and Delhi, which is why the retailer for Jimmy Choo decided to abandon it after just two years: «Astronomical rents and a leaning towards buying luxuries that goes beyond all boundaries» put the Morjani Group off. The trend for sports shoes is different. Kate McShane, the Director of Citi Investment Research, believes that: «There are good growth margins for the trainer giants also in Brazil and India».

For some medium-/high-range companies, the phrase ‘emerging markets’ varies. Steven Madden can boast increases of 50% in India, Arab Emirates and Benelux; sales outside the USA, however, account for just 5% of the turnover. Deckers should be opening 15 stores by the end of the year, most of which will be in Asia. The Jones Group has got its eye on Europe and Latin America. Jones New York has opened up in Spain and Mexico, whereas Nine West «still has outlets in Brazil, China, India, Russia and other emerging countries» concluded the Managing Director, Wesley Card. Saks Fifth Avenue, however, after the sales outlets in the City of Mexico, Riyadh, Jeddah, Dubai and Manama, decided against China in favour of Almaty, in Kazakhstan.

«There is a lot of excitement, in these places, which the traditional markets seem to have lost – said the designer Michael Kors – because ten years ago their inhabitants wore shoddy clothes, now they go for glamour. In Russia fifteen years ago all they sold was super-luxury products, now people go for the casual look».

Siva Yam, President of the Sino-American Chamber of Commerce for ten years now, explained how, in the meantime, things have changed: «At the start of my mandate American companies asked for help with outsourcing. Now all they think about is going to China to sell. If we talk about the luxury market, even though the average income is one thousand dollars a year, there are lots of people who have the necessary purchasing power. In ten years time, 40% of the world’s luxury products will be consumed by the Chinese. Products in the mid-range still have a long time to wait». Mr. Yam raised the subject of social dynamics: «Here, people are very sensitive to what VIPs and stars of showbusiness are wearing: the rule of status and symbols applies. If a political leader smokes a cigarette or wears a designer suit, then that product will become a ‘must’. Anyone who doesn’t dress

appropriately, or who doesn’t wear fashionable clothes, could be excluded from business deals.

This is why the hunt is on for luxury products from Italy, France and, to some extent, England. The only American companies that are considered ‘in’ are Coach and Polo. You don’t see any American cars on the roads and American Marlboros, which used to dominate the market, have now been replaced by the extremely expensive Chinese Panda cigarettes, smoked by the political establishment.

There is the American company Nike, but it is also up against some very strong competition».

Mike May, the Communications Manager for the Sporting Goods Manufacturers’ Association: explained: «China and India have the potential to overtake the United States and Europe as outlet markets for our products, but the main differences in social terms could bring the growth rate to a halt in the long-term». America, and its basketball stars, have an impact on young markets, even though Mr. May sustains that sports shoes are not sold because of geographical assimilation: «Often, consumers are not aware that Adidas and Puma are German brands». Exporting to a market that is so eager for western consumerism has its risks: «American products are unknown and a big marketing effort is needed. – he concluded – And then it’s easy to find yourself in breach of the commercial laws».

Zambrelli explored the most significant differences between the mid-range and top-end markets: «A company that makes bags has to adapt the product to suit local tastes, such as longer or shorter handles, in sizes used locally, characteristics and colours which have a meaning in that territorial context. A French or Italian luxury brand, however, is called upon to make minor changes (the length of the wallet in keeping with the size of the banknotes or identity cards), as it has to defend its prestige. In fact, the customer wants to buy a product that is recognisable internationally».

However, the most winning argument in the search for new markets is the one linked to their levels of economical potential. Whereas the United States, Japan and Europe are going through a difficult period in terms of growth and consumer trust, China witnessed a 10% increase in the GDP in 2010 and is predicting another 8.7% end-of-year increase.

India is not far behind, and is revolving around the other “new tigers”, or rather the other six countries which are trying to drag the world’s economy out of the clutches of the recession. They are Thailand, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Vietnam and Indonesia. These countries guarantee companies full-price sales, in those consolidated places where the discount policy is inevitable. One step down we have South America, led by Brazil (5% increase in the GDP, with the World Cup and the Olympics on the way with 50 billion dollars of investments) and Chile (with the arrival of Gap and Ugg). We mustn’t forget the two main middle-eastern outlets: Kuwait (an extremely young population with lots of money to spend, where a 42% increase in fashion is expected) and Saudi Arabia, where luxury has a major role to play. ■

Nacque così il mito impersonificato da Tom Cruise in Top Gun. Ne parla Alfredo Cionti (Avirex) er raccontare questa storia di abbigliamento, aeroplani e assi dell’aviazione dobbiamo partire dal cavallino rampante della Ferrari. Vi siete mai chiesti perché la scuderia più famosa del mondo abbia scelto quell’animale nero su sfondo giallo (con banda tricolore) come logo? Lo concesse nel 1923 a Enzo Ferrari una donna. Si chiamava Paolina Biancoli, la madre del “mito” dei cieli Francesco Baracca, medaglia d’oro nella prima guerra mondiale. “Era lo stemma di mio figlio, le porterà fortuna” disse la contessa Biancoli al Drake, e mai previsione fu più azzeccata. Normale del resto che un aviatore scegliesse come stemma un cavallo: quasi tutti i pionieri del volo provenivano dal corpo della cavalleria, privi di esperienza tecnica e senza la minima idea di come ci si dovesse equipaggiare a bordo di quei velivoli. giubbotto di pelle fu una scelta quasi automatica, perché si resero conto che in cielo, estate e inverno, faceva veramente freddo. Gli americani non ebbero dubbi: per affrontare certe temperature ci voleva una pelle col pelo e quindi utilizzarono i montoni che allevavano al confine con il Canada e conciavano nella regione dei Grandi Laghi: nacque così un modello antesignano del B3, che verrà poi standardizzato con tutti i crismi del caso. All’approvvigionamento provvedeva ciascuno in piena libertà fino alla fine degli anni ‘30, quando comparvero le prime divise militari. La standarizzazione dei modelli anticipò comunque la definizione delle procedure di acquisto, perché i militari sono schematici per loro stessa impostazione mentale: stratificano le esperienze positive e le trasformano in prassi, per non commettere quegli errori che potrebbero costar loro la vita. Al primo giubbotto standardizzato Usa venne dato un nome di scarsa fantasia, A1. È il cosidetto valstarino, quello che indossa nelle foto ufficiali, sopra una camicia e una cravatta sottile, Charles Augustus Lindbergh, autore della prima trasvolata atlantica. Con il passare degli anni migliorano le condizioni a bordo degli aeroplani e compaiono i primi cockpit chiusi e riscaldati. I fornitori ufficiali dell’esercito americano possono quindi introdurre dei capi più leggeri: come l’A2, realizzato in pelle di cavallo e successivamente, quando scoppia la seconda guerra mondiale e scarseggia il materiale, anche ricorrendo alle capre. cola manifattura di Long Island con tanto di conceria, che segue lo Us Army già a cavallo delle due guerre fornendo un numero esiguo di giacche in pelle per la marina, le forze aeree e navali. E così continuò fino al 1975, l’anno della svolta: con l’avvento dei jet infatti le forniture scarseggiavano perché gli stessi piloti erano orientati su materiali ignifughi. La fabbrica rischiava di chiudere. Fu allora che un avvocato dell’Arizona, affascinato dalla bellezza dei giubbotti, pensò che si potessero vendere bene anche tra la popolazione civile. Ebbe ragione, e il successo fu superiore alle attese: se ne innamorò pure Hollywood.

Avirex divenne un caso planetario nel 1986, grazie al film Top Gun. Il giubbotto del tenente Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, interpretato da Tom Cruise, era un G1 in pelle di capra personalizzato con l’applicazione di diverse toppe (patches). Qui è il caso di aprire una parentesi. «Le patches – racconta Alfredo Cionti, amministratore delegato di Avirex Europa – sono un’eredità della cosiddetta nose art, così veniva chiamata l‘arte di dipingere gli aerei durante la seconda guerra mondiale. I piloti infatti personalizzavano i propri bolidi a partire dalla fusoliera con motivi che poi riprendevano nei loro stessi giubbotti. Un giorno però accadde che i nazisti ne abbatterono uno il cui equipaggio aveva denominato murder inc, la compagnia degli assassini, con tanto di scritta». Era una trovata goliardica, che i tedeschi strumentalizzarono per mostrare al mondo che gli stessi americani si definivano “assassini”. «Da allora l’esercito statunitense bandì qualsiasi motivo impresso sulle fusoliere, consentendo però l’applicazione di patch sulla divisa, che potevano identificare scuole frequentate dai piloti, basi dove avevano prestato servizio, varie missioni compiute. Divenne, in definitiva, una sorta di curriculum vitae cucito sulla pelle». E sono gli stessi stemmi che resero celebre il giubbotto di Tom Cruise,

oggi custodito nel museo privato del gruppo, a Bernardsville (New Jersey). Fu un decennio d’oro, quello degli eighties, per esposizione mediatica. Oltre a Top Gun arrivarono le serie di Rocky, con Stallone che indossava l’A3, e “The right stuff” (tradotto in italiano come “Uomini veri”). Il traino del consumo di massa finì per riconquistare quello militare: nel 1996 infatti l’esercito chiese e ottenne a furor di popolo la reintroduzione del giubbotto in pelle, ormai non più funzionale ma iconico, imponendo ai fornitori i parametri Avirex. L’identificazione era totale: basti pensare che in Repubblica Ceca, per citarne uno, il giubbotto in pelle da aviatore prende il nome di Avirezka.

Il rapporto tra Avirex e l’esercito è dormiente dal 2007, senza particolari motivi.

perché su una cosa non ci sono santi: il giubbotto non si cambia mai, invecchia assieme al pilota. Le stesse consunzioni della pelle valgono come testimonianza di gloria e ore di volo. E a proposito di materiali: le ovine arrivano prevalentemente dagli Stati Uniti, le capre invece dalla zona di Carcassonne, sud della Francia, dove esiste una tradizione consolidata di lavorazione e lavaggio delle pelli. La manifattura invece è suddivisa sempre tra gli Usa, specializzati sulle ovine, e l’Italia. «I giubbotti in pelle di capra li affidiamo ad aziende marchigiane» specifica Cionti. Niente Asia dunque per Avirex. «Non abbiamo i quantitativi per produrre in Cina e francamente preferiamo non esporci a rischi o lamentele da parte dei nostri clienti.

Parliamo di giacche in vendita a 12001300 euro, che un consumatore si tiene anche per vent’anni: c’è chi ci chiama per sostituire il collo o altre piccole riparazioni, dobbiamo essere in grado di dargli ciò che si aspetta da noi. Questa tradizione di qualità ci ha salvati».

La novità dell’anno sono le calzature, sviluppate assieme alla 3A Antonini e presentate in pre-collezione all’ultimo Micam. Il lancio vero e proprio è stato rinviato all’autunno/inverno 2012-13. «Lo abbiamo fatto – sottolinea Cionti – per assecondare un’esigenza del cliente, avvertita nei nostri 24 negozi in Giappone e nei 13 monomarca europei. Con la pelletteria, una scommessa lanciata oltre vent’anni fa e prodotta in Lombardia, è andata molto bene. Ora vedremo se piaceranno le nostre scarpe. L’intenzione è di affiancare alcuni modelli commerciali, in linea con le tendenze del mercato, ad altri ispirati alla tradizione militare americana, pianta larga e tanta comodità». La produzione in questo caso sarà 90% Far East. «Intanto cominciamo con l’uomo – conclude l’a.d. Avirex – poi però proporremo anche la scarpa femminile». ■

Leather Aces The epic deeds of flying and the need for protection against the cold.

This is how the legend, personified by Tom Cruise in Top Gun, came about. Speaking is Alfredo Cionti (Avirex) o be able to tell this tale of clothing, aeroplanes and aviation Aces we have to start with Ferrari’s prancing horse. Have you ever asked yourself why the world’s most famous car manufacturer picked that black animal on a yellow background (with a tricolored flag) as its logo? It was given to Enzo Ferrari in 1923 by a woman. Her name was Paolina Biancoli, the mother of the “legend” of the skies Francesco Baracca, a national hero of World War I. “It was my son’s badge, it brought him good luck” Countess Biancoli told Drake, and never before had such a prediction been so true. It was only normal that an aviator would choose a horse as his badge: almost all the flying pioneers came from the cavalry corps, so lacking in technical experience and without even the minimum idea of how to equip themselves onboard those planes. The leather jacket was an almost automatic decision, because they realised that there, up in the sky, Summer and Winter, it was really cold. The Americans had no doubts whatsoever: to be able to withstand certain temperatures leather and fur were needed so they used the skins from the sheep that they reared on the border with Canada which were tanned in the region of the Great Lakes: this is how the forerunner model of the B3 came about, which was then standardised and praised to the hilt. Everyone was free to make their own choice up until the end of the 1930s, when the first military uniforms appeared on the scene.

However, the standardisation of the models anticipated the definition of the purchasing procedures, given the fact that soldiers are schematic as a result of their mental training: they stratify positive experiences and turn them into normal procedure, so as not to make any mistakes that could cost them their lives. The first standardised American jacket was given a name that was not what you would call imaginative, the A1.

It is the so-called “Valstarino”, the one worn in the official photos, over a shirt and a thin tie, by Charles Augustus Lindbergh, the man behind the first flight across the Atlantic. It has a row of buttons in the middle, two big pockets on the front and an open collar. It was the first great leather “classic” in aviation circles, followed by the B3, an extremely warm jacket made out of sheepskin shearling.

With the passing of time, conditions onboard the planes improved and the first heated, closed-in cockpits appeared. This meant that the official suppliers of the US army could introduce more lightweight garments: like the A2, made out of pony skin and, later on, when World War II broke out and material was scarce, they also started to use goatskin. Among these suppliers was one name that went on to become the symbol of flying attire: Avirex, a small company based in Long Island with a big tannery, which followed the US army between the two World Wars, supplying them with a huge number of leather jackets for both the marines and the air force. This relationship continued until 1975, the year everything changed: in fact, with the arrival of the jet, supplies started to wane because the pilots themselves preferred flameproof materials. The factory risked closing down. It was then that a lawyer in Arizona, fascinated by the look of the jackets, thought that they could sell well even among the civil population. He was right, and the success was even greater than imagined: even Hollywood fell in love with them.

Avirex became a planetary case in 1986, thanks to the film Top Gun. The jacket worn by Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, played by Tom Cruise, was a G1 made out of goatskin and personalised with a number of numerous patches. Here we need to need to explain something. «Patches – said Alfredo Cionti, the Managing Director of Avirex Europe – were inherited from the socalled nose art, as the art of painting the ‘noses’ of the

planes during World War II was called. In fact, the pilots used to personalise their own planes, starting from the fuselage, with patterns that were then copied onto their jackets. However, one day, it happened that the Nazis shot down one which the crew had nicknamed murder inc». It was a goliardic discovery, one that the Germans exploited to show the world that the Americans saw themselves as “murderers”. «From then on, the US army banned any designs on the fuselages, whilst allowing the pilots, though, to put patches on their uniforms, which could identify the schools they attended, the bases where they were stationed and the various missions they had carried out. In the end, it became a sort of Curriculum Vitae sewn onto the leather». And it is those selfsame badges that made the jacket worn by Tom Cruise famous, which is today kept in the Group’s private museum, in Bernardsville (New Jersey). The 1980s proved to be the golden years in terms of media exposure. Besides Top Gun, there were also the Rocky films, starring Sylvester Stallone seen wearing an A3, and “The right stuff”. The driving force of mass consumption came to an end when the army went back to using them again: in fact, in 1996 the army asked for, and obtained, so causing a public outcry, the reintroduction of the leather jacket, which was considered more iconic than functional, imposing the same parameters as used by Avirex on suppliers. The identification was total: just think that in the Czech Republic, to give just one example, the leather flying jacket was given the name of Avirezka.

The relationship between Avirex and the army has been on hold since 2007, without any particular reason. It is thought that the army stores have simply got too many to get rid of, because there’s no two ways about it, the jacket never changes, it just grows older together with the pilot. The same can be said for the testimonies of glory and hours of flying.

With regard to the materials, the shearling came mainly from America, whereas the goatskins came from the Carcassonne region, in the south of France, where there is consolidated tradition based on processing and washing hides. The workmanship, however, is split between America, which specialises in shearling, and Italy. «We entrust the leather jackets made out of goatskin to companies in the Marche region» pointed out Mr. Cionti. So no Asia input then for Avirex. «We do not have the numbers to have them made in China and, frankly speaking, we prefer not to expose ourselves to the risks or complaints from our customers. We are talking about jackets that sell for between 1,200-1,300 Euros, which will last for anything up to twenty years: there are those people who ask us to replace the collar or do other small repair jobs, we must be able to given them what they expect from us. This tradition of quality is what saved us».

The new products this year are shoes, developed in collaboration with 3A Antonini and presented as a pre-collection at the last edition of Micam. The real launch was postponed until Autumn/Winter 2012-13. «We went for shoes – explained Mr. Cionti – in response to requests from customers in our 24 stores in Japan and 13 European mono-brand stores. With leather goods, a challenge that was set more than twenty years ago and produced in the Lombardy region, things went really well. Now we have to wait and see if people like our shoes too. Our aim is to flank a number of commercial brands, in line with trends on the market, whereas others are inspired by the American army tradition, with a broad sole and extremely comfortable». In this case, 90% of production will be done in the Far East. «We’re starting off with men’s shoes – concluded the Managing Director of Avirex – and then we’re also going to bring out a women’s range». ■

Chi sono ora i nuovi mecenati? Moltissime tra le imprese che operano nel mondo della moda, il cui collegamento con le arti è talmente diretto che si parla della moda stessa come forma d’arte, la più originale ed efficace tra quelle emerse nella seconda metà del secolo scorso. E il neo mecenatismo ha individuato la propria capitale nella Serenissima. Canal Grande (già proprietà del Gruppo Fiat), per esporvi la sua collezione privata d’arte contemporanea, tra le prime cinque del mondo per importanza e valore stimato. Da lì nacque un legame profondo tra la famiglia francese e la città lagunare, culminato nella creazione di un centro d’arte contemporanea a Punta della Dogana, recuperando gli antichi edifici della Dogana da Mar abbandonati da oltre trent’anni. All’inaugurazione di questi ultimi, nel giugno 2009, Pinault dichiarò: «Venezia è una sfida alle certezze e alle evidenze. La sua storia, che spesso si confonde con la storia dell’arte, è il racconto di una continua lotta contro il tempo e gli elementi. L’immenso privilegio che mi ha concesso, affidandomi la realizzazione di un centro d’arte contemporanea in un luogo simbolico quale è Punta della Dogana, comporta una responsabilità formidabile: quella di raccogliere l’eredità di coloro che non hanno mai esitato a scardinare le tradizioni, e trasgredire le mode per garantire la libertà di parola all’arte del loro tempo». Venice cité fatale anche per il figlio di Pinault e attuale amministratore di Ppr, François-Henri Pinault, che l’ha scelta per celebrare le proprie nozze nel 2009 con l’attrice Salma Hayek.

Miuccia Prada e Patrizio Bertelli dal 1993 hanno invece rivolto il loro interesse verso Milano, città della stilista, iniziando con uno spazio espositivo dedicato alla scultura contemporanea intitolato “Prada Milano Arte”, nel quale attraverso gli anni si sono susseguite mostre prestigiose; poi, con la Fondazione Prada, è stato dato spazio anche a progetti di ambiente urbano con installazioni permanenti, all’architettura, alla filosofia, alla scienza, al design ed al cinema. game con Venezia e in particolare con la Biennale, per la riscoperta ed il restauro di film dimenticati, e con il Festival del Cinema. Lo scorso aprile la Fondazione Prada ha inoltre inaugurato un nuovo spazio espositivo a Ca’ Corner della Regina, prestigioso palazzo settecentesco che si affaccia sul Canal Grande, che dopo un magnifico restauro attualmente ospita una mostra, curata da Germano Celant, che illustra le attività presenti e future del brand, compresa la raccolta di opere d’arte, di architettura, i lavori di restauro e i progetti speciali realizzati in collaborazione con organizzazioni museali internazionali come l‘Hermitage di San Pietroburgo e la Qatar Museums di Doha. Senza dimenticare il sostegno della griffe ai restauri di statue e arcate a Bologna (Accademia delle Belle Arti e Palazzo dell’Archiginnasio).

Non poteva mancare Lvmh, il più grande gruppo mondiale del lusso, il cui impegno a sostegno della cultura è stato affidato dal 2006 alla Fondation Louis Vuitton pour la Création, dedicata all’arte contemporanea in tutti i suoi aspetti. Da allora sono stati molti gli investimenti per la conoscenza dell’arte dal Novecento in poi, senza dimenticare i grandi maestri del passato, attraverso mostre, dibattiti, conferenze, incontri tra artisti, scienziati e musicisti. Inoltre, nell’atelier calzaturiero che si trova a pochi chilometri dalla città lagunare, a Fiesso d’Artico, sono state esposte per volontà di Yves Carcelle, amministratore delegato uscente di Vuitton (destinato proprio alla Fondazione), numerose opere di artisti contemporanei ispirate al tema della calzatura.

una gigantesca scarpa lunga 4,70 metri realizzata con più di 600 tra pentole e coperchi, opera di Joana Vasconcelos. La galleria misura complessivamente 263 metri quadrati. La maison è impegnata anche in una serie di iniziative volte a tutelare e preservare il patrimonio artistico in Italia e Francia. Nel 2010 ha partecipato al progetto di restauro della Pala gotica d’argento dorato della Chiesa di San Salvador a Venezia, uno dei più preziosi manufatti di oreficeria veneziana della metà del 1300. Ora, in accordo con il comune di Verona, collaborerà al ripristino dell’aspetto monumentale originario del trecentesco recinto delle Arche Scaligere e delle tombe monumentali della famiglia della Scala, che dominò la città tra il 1277 e il 1387.

E Roma? La tutela del patrimonio artistico della città eterna non è stata trascurata dalle grandi firme. Ha fatto il giro del mondo la notizia dell’imminente avvio dei lavori di restauro del Colosseo, finanziati in buona parte dal Gruppo Tod’s. «Questa iniziativa – ha dichiarato il presidente e amministratore delegato, Diego Della Valle – concretizza la volontà di proteggere e promuovere la cultura italiana, nella certezza che investire nel made in Italy, nelle capacità, nelle tradizioni, nella cultura del Paese sia il modo migliore per renderlo più competitivo, e quindi dare opportunità migliori a tutte le persone che in questo paese vivono e lavorano, e che amano la sua storia e le sue tradizioni. È un’iniziativa importante che ci auguriamo possa essere seguita da altre aziende e persone orgogliose delle nostra cultura». A Firenze va segnalata la presenza di Salvatore Ferragamo che nel palazzo storico eletto a propria sede, lo Spini Ferroni, ha allestito un museo con oltre 10 mila modelli di scarpe e che in questo

The new benefactors Furthering culture and protecting artistic heritage: this is the task that many leading lights in the fashion world have taken on board.

With Venice being at the centre of the investments

n Ancient Rome, during Augustus’ empire, his adviser Gaius Cilnius Mecenate put all his efforts into founding a circle of intellectuals and poets so as to be able to support (especially financially) artistic production, so helping to raise the level of cultural life back then. This protection made him immortal: in fact, in Italy, even today, the word “mecenatismo” meaning patronage is used to indicate programmes and actions of cultural encouragement.

Who are the new benefactors today? There are numerous companies that work within the world of fashion, whose link with the arts is so direct that they say that fashion itself is an art form, the most original and efficacy among those that emerged in the second half of the last century.

And neo-patronage has found its capital in Venice, that jewel of a city suspended between earth and water, the main destination for the resources offered by the top names in luxury circles, who have opened branches of their foundations and museums there and set up temporary initiatives. A decision based on image, because its uniqueness is not up for discussion, but also on responsibility, because the state of health of the Lagoon is looking precarious and very worrying. In fact, today, furthering also means protecting, protecting the monuments from the ravages of time.

At the beginning of 2008, with “Venetians for Venice“, a project set up by the Fondaco s.r.l. company “aimed at stimulating the pride of living in a unique city by means of a direct commitment which enhances the artistic-historical heritage“, a group was formed involving prestigious international brands: including Prada, Diesel, Bulgari, PPR and LVMH. For many of these brands this was certainly not the first investment. Take François Pinault, the President of the PPR holding company which owns the Gucci Group: it was he who, in 2005, bought the historical Palazzo Grassi, one of the most beautiful residences on the Grand Canal (previously owned by the FIAT Group), as a place to exhibit his private collection of contemporary art, among the top five in the world in terms of importance and estimated value. This is where the close bond between the French family and the lagoon city was borne, which culminated with the creation of the Punta della Dogana contemporary art centre, by retrieving the old buildings of the Dogana da Mar that had been abandoned for more than thirty years. At the inauguration, in June 2009, Mr. Pinault said: «Venice is a challenge for certainties and facts.

story of art, is the story of a continuous struggle against time and the elements. The immense privilege that it has given me, by entrusting me with the creation of a contemporary art centre in such a symbol place as the Punta della Dogana, brings with it a formidable level of responsibility: that of taking over from those who have never hesitated to break with tradition, or go against all the latest fashions to ensure the art of their time the freedom of speech». Venice cité fatale also for Mr. Pinault’s son, FrançoisHenri Pinault, who is currently the Director of PPR and who chose to celebrate his wedding here in 2009 to the actress Salma Hayek.

In 1993, however, Miuccia Prada and Patrizio Bertelli turned their interests towards Milan, the city of designers, starting with an exhibition centre dedicated to contemporary sculpture entitled “Prada Milano Arte”, which, over the years, has seen a procession of prestigious exhibitions; then came the Fondazione Prada, which also gave space to urban environment projects with permanent installations, plus architecture, philosophy, science, design and cinema. The Group, which was recently floated on the Stock Market in Hong Kong, also has a close link with Venice, the Biennial in particular, aimed at rediscovering and restoring forgotten films, and the Film Festival. Back in April, Fondazione Prada also inaugurated a new exhibition centre in Ca’ Corner della Regina, a prestigious eighteenthcentury Palace that looks out onto the Grand Canal, which, after being magnificently restored, is now home to an exhibition, organised by Germano Celant, which illustrates the current and future activities of the brand, including a collection of works of art, architecture, the restoration work and the special projects set up in collaboration with international museum organisations such as the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg and the Qatar Museums in Doha. Without forgetting the brand’s support in restoring statues and arches in Bologna (the Academy of Fine Arts and Palazzo dell’Archiginnasio).

LMVH just had to be involved, being the biggest luxury group in the world, whose commitment towards supporting culture was entrusted, back in 2006, to the Fondation Louis Vuitton pour la Création, dedicated to contemporary art in all its aspects. Since then lots of investments have been made to raise awareness about art from the twentieth-century onwards, without forgetting the great masters of the past, through exhibitions, debates, conferences and meetings with artists, scientists and musicians. What’s more, at the shoe-manufacturing atelier which

is just a few kilometres away from the lagoon city, in Fiesso d’Artico, numerous works by contemporary artists inspired by the shoe theme have been displayed on the wishes of Yves Carcelle, Vuitton’s outgoing Managing Director. The cloister of the atelier is home to both the ‘L’Objet du désir’, a sculpture by Nathalie Decoster that is 2.7 metres long and which was created specifically for the company, and ‘Priscilla’, a gigantic 4.7 metre-long shoe with more than 600 pans and lids, the work of Joana Vasconcelos.

The gallery measures 262 square metres in all.

The Maison is also committed towards a number of initiatives aimed at protecting and preserving the artistic heritage in both Italy and France.

In 2010 it took part in the restoration project for the Gothic gold Pala d’Oro at the Church of Saint Salvador in Venice, one of the most precious objects of Venetian goldsmith’s art dating back to the mid 1300’s. Now, in agreement with Verona Council, it will be collaborating on the restoration of the original monumental aspect of the fourteenth-century fence around the Scaliger Tombs and the monumental tombs of the Scala family, who dominated the city between 1277 and 1387.

And Roma? The protection of the artistic heritage of the Eternal City has not been overlooked by the top brands. News of the imminent start-up of restoration work on the coliseum, financed mainly by the Tod’s Group, spread around the world like wildfire. «This initiative – said the company’s President and Managing Director, Diego Della Valle – puts into practice the desire to protect and promote Italian culture, convinced of the fact that investing in ‘Made in Italy’, in the skills, the traditions and the culture of the country is the best way to make it more competitive, and, therefore, able to offer better opportunities to all those people who live and work in this country, and who love its history and its traditions. It is a major initiative which we hope will be backed by other companies and people who are proud of our culture». In Florence, mention is made of the presence of the Salvatore Ferragamo company which, in the historical palace elected as the company’s headquarters, namely the Spini Ferroni, set up a museum with more than 10,000 models of shoes and which, is currently hosting the “Salvatore Ferragamo Inspirations and Visions“ exhibition, which is on until March 2012. Furla set up a foundation in Bologna that is responsible for organising the Furla Prize, which is now in its eighth edition and aimed at encouraging young contemporary designers.

Unic, the Association of Italian Tanneries has not been backwards in coming forwards when it comes to protecting Italy’s artistic and cultural heritage. It is focusing on restoring the old Roman tannery at the archaeological site in Pompeii, without, however, overlooking Venice, where it contributed to the restoration work of Palazzo Ducale. ■

iamo un marchio del made in Italy orientato alla sobrietà». Lo dice Diego Rossetti, che insieme ai fratelli Diego e Renzo, guida l’omonimo calzaturificio di Parabiago e ha avviato una piccola rivoluzione strategica: meno apparenza, più contenuto al prodotto. Tradotto: meno insistenza mediatica e minori investimenti sulla griffe, più attenzione all’organizzazione della produzione e alla qualità del manufatto. Una scelta “da specialisti” che dovrebbe garantire ai Rossetti il raddoppio del fatturato in tre anni. Una strategia manageriale che ha come punto fermo lo sviluppo di tutta la produzione al proprio interno, grazie all’organizzazione di un know how verticale di cui i Rossetti vanno fierissimi.

Alle più moderne tecniche organizzative affianchiamo le lavorazioni più tradizionali e questa gestione ci rende competitivi anche se conosciamo tutti le difficoltà del produrre in Italia a cominciare dal reperimento della mano d'opera.

La formazione è un problema assillante?

Sì, al quale ovviamo collaborando con l'Istituto Bernocchi di Legnano che ha avviato un corso per tecnici calzaturieri per promuovere nei giovani la passione per questo lavoro che può dare grandi soddisfazioni sia professionali che economiche.

Dite che oggi occorre porre meno attenzione al marchio riconoscibile e più su ricerca della qualità. Perché?

È il pubblico che si sta orientando più verso prodotti, e quindi aziende, di qualità garantita attraverso la tradizione e la specializzazione, caratteristiche che le griffe di "total look" ovviamente non hanno.

Quali obiettivi vi ponete?

Di continuare a rimarcare queste nostre peculiarità anche attraverso forme di comunicazione orientate in questo senso. Gli obiettivi sono di farci strada in mercati esteri dove questo approccio ha grandi potenzialità, cercando noi i clienti che ci interessano. ■

«O

urs is a ‘Made in Italy’ brand that is geared towards simplicity». Talking is Diego Rossetti, who, together with his brothers Dario and Luca, runs the homonymous shoe factory in Parabiago and who started a small yet strategic revolution: less showiness, more product content.

Translated: less media insistence and fewer investments in the label, more attention paid to the organisation of the production and product quality. A decision made by “specialists” which should ensure the Rossetti family a 100% increase in turnover over the next three years. A managerial strategy aimed at seeing all the production being done in-house, thanks to the organisation of the company’s vertical knowhow which is something the Rossetti brothers are extremely proud of. All their shoes are the result of the synergy between craftsmanship and technology which is described here through a collection of photographs and Diego Rossetti’s own words.

What does manufacturing in Italy actually mean these days?

For us it is the essence itself of our mission. Ours is a fully integrated company with in-depth know-how throughout the entire production process, design, shapes, industrialisation, production and sales to the public through our 27 direct shops. The latest organisational techniques are flanked by the most traditional processes and this way of doing things makes us competitive even though we are well aware of all the difficulties connected to manufacturing in Italy, especially when it comes to finding suitable staff.

Is training an insistent problem?

Yes, but something that we get round by collaborating with the Bernocchi Institute in Legnano which set up a course for shoe-manufacturing engineers to instil the passion for this kind of work in young people which can bring with it a great deal of satisfaction, both professionally and financially.

Making shoes in Parabiago, becoming a managerial company, doubling turnover in the space of 3 years, giving more value to the product and less emphasis on the label.

This, told in both words and pictures, is the “revolution” of Fratelli Rossetti

You say that these days you need to pay less attention to the recognisable brand and concentrate more on the search for quality. Why? It is the public who is veering more towards products, and, therefore, companies where the focus is on quality, something that can only be guaranteed by tradition and specialisation, characteristics that "total look" labels obviously do not have.

What goals have you set?

To continue to stand out also through targeted forms of communication. We hope to make headway on foreign markets where this approach has a great deal of potential, with us being the ones who seek out the customers that are of interest to us. I

Per i leader della cosiddetta “fast fashion” è il momento di rinnovare per tenere il passo del mercato.

Dalla Galizia lanciano e-store ed outlet, dalla Catalogna separano l’accessorio con l’insegna Mango Touch uando nel 1990, un anno dopo la fondazione, il calzaturificio Tempe di Elche raggiunse con la sua prima collezione di calzature per bambini i punti vendita Zara, pochi addetti ai lavori avrebbero potuto immaginare quale opportunità si sarebbe aperta per quella piccola realtà.

Oggi il gruppo Inditex è un colosso mondiale della distribuzione, tanto da aver scalzato Credit Agricole nella graduatoria Eurostoxx 50: ormai vale più della banca francese. E Tempe non si è lasciata sfuggire l’opportunità di crescere di pari passo. Oggi progetta tutte le collezioni, controlla la produzione e porta a termine la distribuzione di calzature e accessori delle catene commerciali Inditex (Zara, Pull&Bear, Massimo Dutti, Bershka, Stradivarius, Oysho, Zara Home y Uterqüe), registrando nel corso di questi anni un'evoluzione spettacolare dei risultati economici. Ecco le cifre: nel 2001 fatturava circa 162 milioni di euro, nel 2009 sarebbe arrivata a oltre 671 milioni; la produzione è passata dai cinque milioni di paia del 2001 ai quasi 48 milioni del 2010; l’occupazione dai 355 addetti del 2001 agli oltre mille attuali.

diato. Per prima cosa, investire nella distribuzione alternativa ai negozi tradizionali, con internet in pole-position. Infatti il 6 settembre 2011 il gruppo con base operativa in Galizia ha ufficialmente lanciato il suo canale di e-commerce per tutti gli otto brand, strizzando l’occhio soprattutto a Giappone e Stati Uniti, i Paesi che più acquistano online. Si tratta di una naturale evoluzione della piattaforma di commercio elettronico del brand Zara, lanciata nel 2010, che l'anno scorso è diventata rapidamente il

primo negozio mondiale per volume di vendite, con un netto vantaggio rispetto agli store tradizionali e soprattutto, ammortizzato l’investimento, con spese di gestione e affitto molto più contenute.

Un'altra importante novità strategica riguarda l'apertura nel 2010 dei due primi outlet Tempe di scarpe e accessori, insegne alternative che rompono con la tradizione e la politica di vendita del gruppo. Come punti di partenza sono state scelte le città di Allariz (Galizia) ed Elche, ma tutto lascia supporre che presto arriveranno presso altri grossi village spagnoli.

Per quanto riguarda l'offerta di scarpe e accessori – la cui produzione viene gestita tra Spagna, Portogallo, America Latina e Far East – vi sono poche novità, a parte qualche aggiustamento nella politica dei prezzi. La rivista online Hoy Mujer segnala che «malgrado negli ultimi anni i listini delle calzature di Zara siano aumentati notevolmente, si possono sempre trovare offerte molto interessanti. Ad esempio, nella scorsa stagione esistevano ben 14 modelli in vendita a meno di 30 euro». Il punto di forza è la presenza di linee trendy e aggiornatissime rispetto alle idee delle grandi firme. Insomma, lo stesso spirito che muove le collezioni di abbigliamento: un plotone di designer (più di 300 complessivamente e 200 solo per Zara) si ispirano alla moda imperante e alle richieste dei clienti che arrivano dai punti vendita. Sì, perché gli store sono usati come centri di sviluppo e avanposto per le ricerche di mercato attraverso il contatto diretto con i clienti di tutto il mondo. Si tratta di una dinamica di lavoro che richiede collaborazione costante tra responsabili dei punti vendita e di area design: le informazioni devono passare ed essere recepite dai creativi, che le inoltrano a loro volta in produzione. Se il meccanismo si inceppa, da lì a un mese sono vendite mancate.

schemi del fast fashion. Mango, l'altro colosso della distribuzione iberica, ha fatto delle collezioni di calzature e pelletteria un punto di forza della propria offerta. Nel settembre 2011 ha presentato al grande pubblico Mango Touch, concept store dedicato esclusivamente a scarpe, borse e altri accessori che presenta collezioni che si caratterizzano «per la cura dei dettagli e per la qualità dei materiali, pelle, canvas, seta, cotone, cachemire», informa una portavoce dell'azienda. Questo ambito oggi incide per il 10% sul totale delle vendite della catena. La novità risiede anche nella scelta della tipologia di prodotto che, come nel caso di Inditex, era strettamente legata alle collezioni di abbigliamento. Con l'apertura di Mango Touch, scarpe e accessori hanno acquisito vita (e tendenze) propria e le collezioni si scostano leggermente da un modello di business che finora contemplava uniformità di tendenze ai fini della creazione del total look della casa: moda urbana, moderna e trendy. «Tutti gli accessori che si trovano da Mango Touch sono stati creati in esclusiva per questo

nuovo concetto», racconta un portavoce «e nei suoi negozi si possono anche trovare gli accessori più venduti nei Mango tradizionali, ma non avviene mai il contrario». I prezzi sono quelli di una fascia di mercato medio/alta. Una borsa da Mango Touch può costare attorno ai 145 euro mentre un paio di scarpe va dai 60 a 75 euro. Il flagship è situato nella zona più esclusiva di Barcellona, al numero 66 di Rambla de Catalunya, mentre altri 15 punti vendita sono stati aperti in Spagna, Emirati Arabi, Italia, Francia, Qatar e Russia.

Prima della fine dell'anno sono inoltre previste altre 19 aperture in centri come Roma, Lisbona, Marbella, Palma di Maiorca, Santiago, Bangkok e Singapore.

La catena catalana, che ha concluso l’esercizio 2010 con 1.270 milioni di euro, +11% sul 2009, si trova oggi in pieno riposizionamento: ha recentemente presentato una nuova immagine e logo. In genere questi cambiamenti avvengono quando la tendenza è già scivolata verso il “rosso”, non quando gli aumenti stanno ancora viaggiando a doppia cifra. Zara & Mango in the fast lane For the leaders of the so-called “fast fashion” the time has come to renew their product ranges so as to be able to keep up with the market. In Galicia they are launching e-stores and outlets, whereas in Catalonia the accessories have been separated under the banner of Mango Touch

hen, back in 1990, a year after it was founded, the Tempe shoe factory in Elche came up with its first collection of kids’ shoes for Zara shops, few insiders could have imagined the opportunities that this would have opened up for that small concern.

These days, the Inditex Group is a worldwide giant in distribution circles, so much so that it ousted the Credit Agricole Bank in the Eurostoxx 50 classification: it is now actually worth more than the French bank. And Tempe did not let the opportunity to expand at the same rate slip through its fingers. Today the company designs all the collections, it has control over the production and sees to the distribution of shoes and accessories for the Inditex commercial chains (Zara, Pull&Bear, Massimo Dutti, Bershka, Stradivarius, Oysho, Zara Home y Uterqüe), registering spectacular developments over the years in terms of financial results. Here are the figures: in 2001 turnover was around the 162 million Euro mark, whereas in 2009 it was more than 671 million; production went from five million pairs in 2001 to almost 48 million in 2010; the number of employees in 2001 was 355 which has now gone up to more than a thousand. 40 million pairs of shoes a year are sent to the Inditex sales outlets from the main branch in Elche alone. The remaining eight million and the accessories are handled by the branches in Mexico, Brazil, India, China and Vietnam. Thanks to the presence of these platforms in five nerve centres around the world, the Valencia–based shoe manufacturer also receives direct information which it uses to adapt the collections to the characteristics of the various markets, in keeping with the concept of regionalisation that is so dear to the Group.

How did the management team handle such an acceleration? In short, Tempe strategically used the Inditex management model based on innovation, flexibility, design and, above all, a rapid response to both market requirements and demand. One of the main features of the model also lies in the close bond that exists between the production/design of shoes and accessories and the actual operations that are carried out on the clothing collections. Everything is devised and designed in line with the ‘total look’ concept at the service of the company’s brands, which have now become the world’s

point of reference for what the media calls “fast fashion”.

What is next on the cards? Despite there not being any official anticipations – the Spanish Group’s communication policy, notoriously restrictive, does not include the possibility of providing the press with any anticipations regarding the business and future strategies – from the latest initiatives that have been concluded it is possible to deduce what the main points will be for the immediate future. First off, investing in forms of distribution that are different to traditional shops, with the Internet in pole-position. In fact, on September 6th 2011 the Group, which has its operational base in Galicia, officially launched its e-commerce channel for all eight brands, so tipping the wink, above all, at Japan and America, the countries that buy the most on-line. This is a natural evolution of the Zara brand’s e-commerce platform, launched in 2010, which, last year, quickly became the world’s number one shop in terms of sales figures, with a clear advantage over traditional stores and, above all, it managed to offset the investment, as the running costs and rent are much lower. Another major strategic plan was the opening in 2010 of the first two Tempe shoe and accessory outlets, alternative brands that break with the Group’s sales policy and tradition. The cities of Allariz (Galicia) and Elche were chosen as the departure points, but everything would lead us to suppose that there will soon be others in other big Spanish towns.

As far as the shoes and accessories are concerned – which are made in Spain, Portugal, Latin America and the Far East – there’s nothing new really, apart from a few adjustments in the price policy. The Hoy Mujer on-line magazine pointed out that «despite prices for Zara shoes having gone up a lot over the last few years, there are always lots of interesting things to choose from. For example, last season there were at least 14 models on sale costing less than 30 Euros». The strong point is the presence of lines that are trendy are extremely upto-date compared to the ideas from the top brands. In short, there is the same spirit that can be found in the clothing collections: a platoon of designers (more than 300 as a whole and 200 just for Zara) get their inspiration from

prevailing fashion and requests from customers who walk into the sales outlets. Yes, because the stores are used as development centres and outposts for market research based on direct contact with customers all over the world.

This is a work dynamic that requires constant collaboration between the managers of the sales outlets and the design area: the information has to be passed onto and deciphered by the creative team, who, in turn, put the ideas into production. If the mechanism gets jammed, sales are lost for up to a month.

If Inditex moves, the competition cannot just stand there, anchored to the old schemes of fast fashion. Mango, the other giant in Spanish distribution circles, has made its collections of shoes and leather goods one of the strong points of what it has to offer. In September 2011 it publicly introduced Mango Touch, a concept store dedicated entirely to shoes, bags and other accessories whose collections are characterised «by the attention to detail and the quality of the materials, namely leather, canvas, silk, cotton and cashmere», said a spokesperson for the company. This area now accounts for 10% of the total of everything that the chain sells. The innovation also lies in the choice of the product type which, as with Inditex, was closely linked to the clothing collections. With the opening of Mango Touch, shoes and accessories have been given their own lease of life (and tendencies) and the collections have shifted slightly from a business model which, until now, called for uniformity in the trends for the purpose of creating a total look for the company: urban, modern and trendy fashion. «All the accessories that you can find in the Mango Touch store were created exclusively for this new concept», explained a spokesperson «and you can also find the best-selling accessories in the traditional Mango shops in the concept store, but not the other way round». The prices are within the mid/high range. A bag from Mango Touch costs around 145 Euros, whereas a pair of shoes costs between 60 and 75 Euros. The flagship is located in the most exclusive area of Barcelona, at number 66 Rambla de Catalunya, whereas a further 15 sales outlets have been opened in Spain, the Arab Emirates, Italy, France, Qatar and Russia. Before the end of the year another 19 are expected to open in places such as Rome, Lisbon, Marbella, Palma de Majorca, Santiago, Bangkok and Singapore. The Catalan chain, which brought the 2010 financial year to a close with a turnover of 1,270 million Euros, 11% up on 2009, has now been fully repositioned: it recently revealed a new look and logo. Generally speaking, such changes occur when the trend has already slipped into the “red”, not when increases are still up in double figures. But if this wasn’t the case, why would they have called it “fast fashion”? ■

Lo constatò coi suoi occhi, sbalordito, l’inviato di Vanity Fair che lo incontrò nella sua casa a New York, dove il creatore dei due mitici modelli ed erede dell’impero Clarks è morto lo scorso luglio. Particolare sì, ma anche rigoroso e tradizionalista. Un vero British, insomma.

Come le sue scarpe, entrate nella storia. Fabbricate nella società a conduzione familiare (i Clark controllano tuttora l’81% delle azioni) più grande e importante del Regno Unito, oggi rappresentano il marchio casual di calzature più famoso al mondo. Da luglio, da quando il governo di Pechino ha concesso a gruppi di cinque o più turisti di visitare la Gran Bretagna - finora proibita a meno che non si fosse uomini d’affari o studenti autorizzati - migliaia di cinesi sono sbarcati a Londra. Cercano il Big Ben e il British Museum, ma sulla lista c’è anche una meta più frivola: gli scaffali dei negozi Clarks, per portare a casa un prodotto – c’è chi sostiene anche venti, in modo da ripagarsi il prezzo del biglietto – che sia la

quintessenza della britannicità. Clarks, paradossalmente, lo è. Per stare al passo con la concorrenza e con i costi di produzione, ha infatti cominciato col chiudere la prima fabbrica inglese nel 1992 e ha finito mettendo i sigilli all’ultima nel 2006. La produzione è stata interamente trasferita all’estero. Asia, of course. Così, bizzarrie del mercato, i cinesi arrivano in Inghilterra per comprare un prodotto fabbricato a casa loro oppure tra Vietnam e India, ma anche Europa dell’Est e Brasile. Ma non se ne preoccupano più di tanto: l’importante è il piacere di aver acquistato a Londra e dintorni un paio di scarpe che ancora conserva, idealmente, le caratteristiche del made in Britain. È la forza del brand, dello status symbol, del mito.

della vita semplice, cominciarono a conciare pelli di pecora a Street, un paesino nel Somerset. In principio furono solo ciabatte, poi arrivò la “linea igienica”, una collezione studiata per seguire la forma naturale del piede, che fece guadagnare a Clarks la reputazione di fuoriclasse del settore, non solo per la linea ma anche e soprattutto per la comodità. Una combinazione vincente. Da allora è stato un successo dopo l’altro. Fino a oggi, con l’azienda che ha sviluppato per le sfide dei prossimi anni un piano super-aggressivo, per imporsi in ogni angolo del mondo.

«Abbiamo lanciato il nostro programma di franchising internazionale nel 2008 – spiega Melissa Potter, amministratore delegato di Clarks – e da allora siamo andati sempre più forti. Oggi Clarks è presente in 160 Paesi con 240 punti vendita, che entro la fine dell’anno raggiungeranno quota 300». In Italia sono già 29. «Abbiamo impresso un’impronta profonda in Spagna, Olanda, Italia, Polonia, Arabia Saudita, Emirati Arabi, Venezuela e Far East. Il franchi-

La politica del retail ha permesso a Clarks di totalizzare nel 2010 l’utile record di 125 milioni di sterline su un giro d’affari complessivo di oltre un miliardo di pound, con un aumento del 19% rispetto all’anno precedente soltanto negli Usa e del 20% in Cina. Questi numeri sono basati su un design rigorosamente British e su una caratteristica rimasta immutata dagli anni venti dell’Ottocento a oggi: la comodità. Per questo le Clarks si sono affermate anche nelle calzature per l’infanzia. Comode e solide, hanno riempito le scuole inglesi e sono diventate un pezzo di tradizione, come ha ricordato la nota giornalista Deborah Arthurs sul Daily Mail: «Mia madre diceva che ogni bimba che si rispetti deve avere un buon paio di scarpe chiuse d’inverno e un bel paio di sandali d’estate. Entrambe erano Clarks. E anche se passavi il tempo a tentare di romperle per poter cambiare, non c’era nulla da fare.

Eppure quando il compianto Nathan Clark tornò in Inghilterra dal fronte birmano, in cui era impegnato con l’esercito britannico, e portò gli schizzi di uno stivaletto in camoscio ispirato a quello indossato dai suoi colleghi dell’Ottava Armata (con suola di gomma fabbricata nei bazaar del Cairo) in azienda gli dissero: “Questo modello non venderà mai”. Mai previsione fu più sbagliata. Il desert boot, la “scarpa del deserto” creata nel 1949, è entrata nella storia della moda e anche della musica. Per il Design Museum è fra i 50 modelli che

hanno cambiato il mondo, uno dei più calzati dagli studenti parigini che infiammavano il maggio francese nel Sessantotto. Sinonimo di Clarks a livello planetario, indossato da Bob Dylan e Steve McQueen, Liam Gallagher degli Oasis e Sarah Jessica Parker di Sex and the City fino all’ex premier inglese Tony Blair, il desert boot ha venduto complessivamente 12 milioni di paia.

Un successo immutato da oltre sessant’anni. E fatto di due ingredienti, come ricordava due anni fa l’allora portavoce di Clarks, Geoff Pedder: linee semplici e comfort insuperabile. «Così

la gente ha riscoperto il suo stile, anno dopo anno, e lo ha adattato al proprio stile di vita». Pure Manolo Blahnik, altro illustre fan dello stivaletto Clarks, dice: «C’è ancora una certa fierezza in quella scarpa». E c’è chi si ricorda ancora lo slogan “Act your shoe size, not your age” (Vivi in base alla misura delle tue scarpe, non della tua età), il contrario di quello che predica un vecchio proverbio inglese.

abbiamo deciso di produrre poche paia da uomo, in edizione limitata, in Inghilterra» dicono in azienda. Un progetto che andrà di pari passo col potenziamento delle vendite on line.

D’altra parte il 2012 è un anno importante per il Regno Unito: Londra ospiterà i Giochi Olimpici. E dopo David Beckham, la star più influente e chic del mondo dello sport, c’è da giurare che saranno molti di più gli sportivi con una scarpa del deserto ai piedi. L’amministratore delegato del brand non ha dubbi: «Il nostro business è fortemente adattabile ai mercati globali. Per questo vogliamo imprimere sulle squadre che lavorano per noi nei singoli mercati

le nostre capacità di vendita al dettaglio, usando le forze, l’esperienza e le conoscenze che abbiamo acquisito nel Regno Unito per implementare il modo di lavorare con i partner nel franchise.

Il nostro obiettivo è di avere grandi negozi in grandi location».

E a proposito di location, l’antica fabbrica dismessa nel Somerset è meta di pellegrinaggio da parte degli shopper di mezzo mondo. Qui nacque nel 1993 il Clarks Village, centro commerciale che comprende 95 negozi e vende altre grandi marche, da Nike a Monsoon, a prezzi ribassati. Una sorta di outlet ante litteram rivelatosi vincente, con più di quattro milioni di visitatori l’anno e con il nome, la storia e la memoria produttiva del più grande brand di scarpe casual al mondo a farla da padrone. ■

British, a tradition The company has had nothing made in the United Kingdom for five years now, but which shoe more than a Clarks epitomises the casual British spirit?

The correspondent of Vanity Fair saw it with his own eyes, astonished, when he met him at his New York home, the place where the creator of the two legendary models and heir to the Clarks empire died back in July. Particular, yes, but also quite stern and a traditionalist. In short, a true Brit. Who, just like his shoes, has gone down in history. Manufactured by the family-run business (the Clarks still hold 81% of the shares), the biggest and most important there is in the United Kingdom, Clarks shoes are the most famous casual shoe brand in the world today. Since July, when the Beijing Government allowed groups of five or more tourists to visit Great Britain – banned previously until then unless they were businessmen or authorised students – thousands of Chinese have been flocking to London. They look for Big Ben and the British Museum, but the list of things to do also includes a more frivolous destination: the shelves in the Clarks shoe shops, in the hopes of taking home a product – some say even twenty, so as to get the price of their airfare back – which is the quintessence of everything British. Clarks, paradoxically, is just so. To be able to keep up with the competition and the rise in production costs, the company began by closing down the first English factory in 1992 before putting the seal on the last one in 2006. Production was transferred entirely abroad. To Asia, naturally. So, as a quirk of the market, the Chinese go to England to buy a product that is made back home or somewhere between Vietnam and India, but also in eastern Europe and Brazil. But they don’t really care about that: the important thing is to have bought a pair of shoes in London or the surrounding areas that still has, ideally, the characteristics of ‘Made in Britain’. It is the power of the brand, the status symbol, the legend.

186 years have gone by – it all started back in 1825 – since the Clark brothers, James and Cyrus, two strict Quakers and lovers of the quiet life, began tanning sheepskins in Street, a little town in Somerset. At first they just made slippers, then came the “hygienic ranges”, a collection that was designed to follow the natural shape of the foot and which earned Clarks the reputation of being outstanding within the industry, not just for the range but also and, above all, for the level of comfort. These figures are based on a strictly British design and a characteristic that has remained unchanged since the 1820s until today: comfort.

This is why Clarks shoes are also a huge success when it comes to children’s shoes. Comfortable and sturdy, English schools are full of them and they have become a part of tradition, as the wellknown journalist Deborah Arthurs recalled in the Daily Mail: «My Mother said that every self-respecting child has to have a good pair of Winter shoes and a nice pair of sandals for the Summer.

All characteristics that have helped the brand to survive the difficult economic situation in Great Britain, where the crisis hit hard and consumption levels came to a halt, but where Clarks, despite everything, is still the leader, with a 10% share of the entire shoe market.

Yet, when the late lamented Nathan Clark got back to England from the Burma front, where he was stationed with the British Army, taking with him a few sketches of a little suede boot inspired by the ones worn by his comrades in the Eighth Army (with a rubber sole made in the bazaars around Cairo) the company told him: “This model

will never sell”. They couldn’t have been more wrong. The desert boot, created in 1949, went down in history for both fashion and music. For the Design Museum it is one of the top 50 models that have changed the world, the one that was worn the most by students involved in the Paris revolt in May 1968. Synonymous with Clarks on a planetary level, worn by Bob Dylan and Steve McQueen, Liam Gallagher from Oasis and Sarah Jessica Parker from Sex and the City, as well as the ex British Prime Minister Tony Blair, the desert boot has sold a total of 12 million pairs. A success that has remained unchanged for more than sixty years. It is based on two ingredients, as the then spokesman for Clarks, Geoff Peddler, explained: simple lines and unsurpassable comfort.

«People have rediscovered its style, year after year, and they have adapted it to their own lifestyle». Even Manolo Blahnik, another illustrious fan of the boot from Clarks, said: «There is still a certain pride in that shoe». And there are those who still remember the slogan “Act your shoe size, not your age”, the exact opposite of an old English proverb.

«Our shoes are all British designed but for the 2012 collection we also decided to make a few pairs of men’s shoes, as a limited edition, actually in England» the company explained. A project that is in keeping with the potential on offer from on-line sales. What’s more, 2012 is an important year for the United Kingdom: London is hosting the Olympic Games. And, after David Beckham, the chicest and most influential star of the world of sport, you can bet there will be many more athletes wearing desert boots on their feet. The Managing Director is sure of this: «Our business is highly adaptable to global markets. This is why we want to impress on the teams who work for us on the individual markets our ability to retail, using the strengths, experience and know-how that we have acquired in the United Kingdom to implement the way of working for our franchising partners. Our aim is to have great shops in great locations».

Talking about locations, the old disused factory in Somerset is the pilgrimage destination for shoppers from halfway around the world. It is here where, in 1993, the Clarks Village was set up, a shopping centre which has 95 shops and sells other leading brands, from Nike to Monsoon, at knock-down prices. A sort of outlet ante litteram which has proved to be a great idea, with more than four million visitors every year and with the name, the history and the production memory of the world’s biggest brand of casual shoes at the helm. ■

Il tariff quota continua a penalizzare le scarpe d’importazione onostante Eurolandia stia vivendo uno dei momenti più difficili della sua storia, l’amore dei giapponesi verso i nostri prodotti di moda e i grandi marchi italiani e francesi non accenna a diminuire. C'è chi, complice il post terremoto – da segnalare comunque la rapidità del recupero di fiducia nel Sol Levante, anche considerando che le previsioni subito dopo lo tsunami procrastinavano il ritorno alla crescita non prima di fine anno, invece già a luglio la produzione industriale ha fatto segnare il quarto segno più consecutivo – sta sacrificando l'acquisto della tanto agognata borsetta in pelle per la più economica handbag in tessuto.

A far da contraltare ai manufatti d'importazione c’è la vasta offerta di brand autoctoni. I giapponesi infatti amano il made in Japan: la tendenza, in atto già prima dello tsunami, sta trovando ulteriori conferme nell'ultimo periodo.

Piacciono perché riescono a unire tecnica, funzionalità e affidabilità; tra i punti deboli troviamo invece la mancanza di colori e di scelta nei tipi di pellame. Molti marchi cercano di contenere i prezzi usando un numero limitato di materiali che però bilanciano con una grande attenzione nei riguardi dei dettagli. L’idea è che i brand locali riescano ad affermarsi meglio quando si presentano sul mercato con prodotti dallo stile minimal, zen oriented. che i marchi asiatici stiano crescendo particolarmente. Certo, alcuni di loro hanno le potenzialità per incrementare le vendite, ma i clienti continuano a preferire i prodotti europei o americani.

Un discorso diverso va fatto per le scarpe, perché quelle d'importazione sono molto care (in Giappone è tuttora in vigore un tariff quota che penalizza l'export di calzature europee, ndr). Un numero crescente di giovani stilisti giapponesi è sempre più apprezzato dalla clientela, anche se la fetta di mercato resta piccola».

Il fattore prezzo continua a rappresentare la discriminante per la scelta dei consumatori nipponici che però, almeno in questo momento, sono incentivati all'acquisto dall'euro debole.

All’inizio di stagione le riviste pubblicano speciali su scarpe e borse dal grande seguito, spiega Kumiko Shimizu, stylist per conto di famose testate femminili: «Appena si finisce di indossare i sandali, tutte già desiderano gli stivali che acquistano anche se fuori ci sono 40 gradi all'ombra».

Le donne li prediligono basici a inizio stagione e più modaioli a metà, ma senza dubbio lo stivale è il must che ogni ragazza giapponese deve possedere. «Per questo autunno – prosegue – la tendenza è verso la suola piatta, borse comode, design confortevole. Nonostante la Cina sia la grande fabbrica mondiale, sulla quale tutti (compresi i giapponesi) fanno affidamento, molti department stores preferiscono non inserirne i prodotti nelle loro selezioni e ci vorrà ancora del tempo prima che acquistino un potere d’immagine tale da poter competere con i grandi della moda internazionale.

«Il manufatto con design asiatico sta sicuramente crescendo – conclude Misha Janette, stylist, blogger, giornalista ed esperta di moda, una delle personalità più influenti ed interessanti del panorama fashion di Tokyo – Mi sembra però che sia stato finora relegato a una estetica “etnica”, tipo lo "stile del sud-est asiatico" o lo "stile cinese". A Japanese price Tokyo is rediscovering its ‘home-grown’ brands. Consumers are matching them with their European “favourites” because they meet their practical needs.

The tariff quota continues to penalise imported shoes

espite the fact that Euroland is going through one of the most difficult periods in its history, the love that the Japanese have for our fashion products and top Italian and French brands is showing no signs of waning. However, aided and abetted by the post-earthquake period – after noticing a rapid upturn in the level of trust in the Land of the Rising Sun, also considering the fact that predictions right after the tsunami procrastinated that there would not be a return to growth levels before the end of the year, whereas, in July, industrial production gained its fourth consecutive sign – there are those who are sacrificing the purchase of the much coveted leather handbag for a much cheaper fabric version. In any case, the top brands in luxury circles, thanks also to the strengthening of the Yen over the Euro that has made our products more competitive for Japanese consumers, have got it easy. Prada, Miu Miu, Valentino, Yves Saint Laurent, Tory Burch, Marc by Marc Jacobs and Ugg represent the hottest brands of the moment when it comes to leather bags and shoes, based on the preferences of the people we interviewed.

In contrast to imported goods is the vast range of home-grown brands. In fact, the Japanese are rediscovering the charm of “Made in Japan”: the trend, which began before the tsunami struck, has been confirmed more and more just recently. They like them because the are able to combine technique, functionality and reliability; among the weak points, however, we find a shortage of colours and choice when it comes to the type of leather. Many brands are trying to keep their prices down by using a limited number of materials which is balanced out, though, with great care taken over the details. The idea is that local brands are able to make a name for themselves more easily when they introduce products onto the market that have a minimal style, Zen-oriented. Yuko Shibuya, the senior buyer for the women’s department for the famous Takashimaya chain of department stores, recommends “Genten” (http:// fromgenten.kuipo.co.jp/), a word which, in Japanese means “origin” or “basic”. «As far as bags are concerned – she explained – I wouldn’t say that Asian brands are expanding particularly. Obviously, some of them have the potential to increase their sales, but the customers still prefer European or American products. It’s a different matter when it comes to shoes, because those that are imported are really expensive (a tariff quota is still

in force in Japan which penalises exports of European footwear). A growing number of young Japanese designers are becoming more popular with the clientele, even though the market share is still only small».

The price is still proving to be a discriminating factor when Japanese consumers have to choose but, at least for now, they are still keen on buying thanks to the weak Euro. It would seem that people still want to buy... On the one hand, as everyone knows, it is accessories that make all the difference and, for a nation that appreciates detail like the Japanese do, bags, shoes, purses, belts and bracelets are the distinctive elements that every young girl uses to express her own personality. At the start of every season fashion magazines publish special issues dedicated to popular bags and shoes, explained Kumiko Shimizu, a stylist who works for a number of leading women’s magazines: «As soon as they’ve finished with wearing sandals, they all want boots, straightaway, which they buy even when its 40 degrees in the shade». Women prefer the basic styles at the start of the season which get trendier towards the middle, but without a doubt the boot is a ‘must-have’ for every Japanese girl. «For this Winter – she went on – the tendency is towards flat soles, roomy bags and a comfortable design. Women here have a delicate physique and so, to tell the truth, excessive heels or it bags are too heavy for them. In fact, I think that products that not only look nice and are elegant, but also practical will become more popular». A good example of a brand which, according to Ms. Shimizu, manages to interpret the desires of the Japanese well and match them with the latest trends is Salon (http://www.salonbtq.com/salon).

So, gaining the favour of both the clientele and ‘insiders’ are the products that are found in local select shops such as Beams, United Arrows, Estnation, Strasburgo and Tomorrowland, to mention just a few. The idea is that these products, designed by Japanese for the Japanese, manage to meet customer-requirements. «This depends on a question of both style and the sizes that are available» sustained Hiroyuki Kai, a stylist for Japanese men’s magazines who, among the brands, suggested reading “Moto” (http://www.motostyle.jp/): «This is a brand based in Aoyama, the chic district of Tokyo, set up by two brothers whose strong point is being able to mix leather with other materials like silver» he explained. The list continues with Yoshida (http://www.yoshidakaban. com/top.html), a company that makes bags that have become very popular in Japan over the last few years and which are well-rated for their design and finish; Goro’s (http://www. 5pr.net/goro/), famous, above all, for its ethnic style, for bags, belts

and wallets; Akm (http://akm163.jp), based in the vast shopping centre in Omotesando Hills, which seems to be planning on launching a new range using the same leather as Hermés; Visvim (http://visv- im.tv/) a company that makes sports shoes which, besides being a big success at home, has also set up a good sales network abroad. Rounding off the list is Mihara Yasuhiro http://www. miharayasuhiro.jp/) and Factotum (http://www.factotum.jp/) two names that are already well-known and appreciated internationally.

Confirmation that local brands are doing well comes from Jun Yoshida, the person responsible for women’s bags and shoes at Matsuya, one of the capital’s most famous department stores. «As far as leather goods are concerned consumers put a lot of trust in them: they are accurate in the details, and this is really important for the Japanese». Hirofu (http://www.hirofu. co.jp/) and Pelle Borsa (http://www. pelle-borsa.com /index.swf) are among the most popular, thanks to their products that are comfy and easy to use, a good selection and an excellent after-sales service. And shoes? According to Yoshida, the Japanese market is looking for a product that is similar to those presented by the Italian brand “L’Autre Chose”, from the Boccaccini shoe factory in Porto Sant'Elpidio, which manages to maintain the right balance between classicism and innovation, so being able to offer shoes that can be worn for both going out and going to work.

Tokyo’s ‘followers of fashion’ can also find an alternative to European labels and the rediscovery of ‘Made in Japan’ in American fashion. It is precisely the brands in the Big Apple – Alexander Wang, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Marc Jacobs and so on – that are the ones which have the most potential if the market continues to grow. It would seem, however, that the ones that are at a standstill, when it comes to styles and trends, are the Asian brands and those in China in particular. Despite the fact that China is the world’s biggest factory, which all the rest (Japan included) depend on, many department stores prefer not to include their products in their product ranges and it will still take some time before they gain power in terms of image that will enable them to compete with the ‘biggies’ in international fashion circles. «Products with an Asian design are undoubtedly growing – concluded Misha Janette, a stylist, blogger, journalist and fashion expert, one of the moist influential and interesting personalities of the fashion panorama in Tokyo – It would seem, though, that, until now, they have been relegated to an “ethic” look, a sort of "South-East Asian style" or "Chinese style". As far as products made out of leather are concerned, there are lots of talented craftsmen who know their stuff. It’s just that they need to work on the prestige or luxury image». ■

Zalando, portale di e-commerce specializzato nelle scarpe, sfrutta la crisi del retail che vende ovunque gli stessi prodotti. «Chi cerca i piccoli marchi di qualità oggi li compra in internet» sostiene la responsabile degli acquisti bbigliamento per uomo, donna, bambino, elegante e sportivo, calzature e accessori, per un totale di 600 marche e 40 mila prodotti. Metri quadri calpestabili? Zero.

Sta tutto dentro il monitor di un pc o nel display di uno smart phone. È davvero vasta l'offerta dell'e-commerce tedesco Zalando, fondato a Berlino tre anni fa come retailer specializzato nella vendita di scarpe online e presente oggi nei principali mercati europei con un'offerta più che quintuplicata. Dalla Germania ha fatto breccia in Francia, Olanda, Gran Bretagna e ora anche in Italia. Una crescita spettacolare, che tuttavia nasconde un segreto: Zalando è stata “incubata” da

Per cavalcare questo trend, Zalando incrementerà nell'immediato futuro l’acquisto di prodotti in pelle dalla lavorazione artigianale e made in Italy.

«L'azienda ha deciso di venire sempre più incontro al gusto italiano. Nel concreto questo si rifletterà in un'apertura ancor maggiore verso i brand nostrani, soprattutto quelli di piccole realtà toscane e marchigiane, che hanno alle spalle un'importante tradizione nella la-

vorazione del materiale, con prodotti la cui qualità viene riconosciuta non solo sul mercato tedesco, bensì su tutti quelli in cui il portale è attivo». Riguardo la capacità di assorbimento dei prodotti?

«Ormai siamo un'azienda di grandi dimensioni, in grado di gestire volumi importanti. Di alcuni brand, come ad esempio quello delle scarpe marchigiane “Mai più senza”, siamo addirittura il rivenditore esclusivo. Mi preme sottolineare che ogni contratto viene concordato singolarmente con il produttore, con cui stabiliamo anche il prezzo di retail in modo da non entrare in contrasto con quello che è il loro canale distributivo tradizionale».

Approfittiamo dunque dell’osservatorio di questo big retailer – attivo su cinque mercati europei molto diversi tra loro per gusti – per capire come vanno le vendite nel vecchio continente. «I marchi italiani già presenti nel nostro assortimento hanno fatto registrare ottimi riscontri. Fratelli Rossetti e Studio Pol-

lini, per citare due tra i più famosi, vendono bene ovunque. Lo stesso si può dire per emergenti quali Lilimill. Più di recente anche diversi brand nordeuropei, come Mimic Copenhagen e Dico Copenhagen, stanno dando vita a un filone interessante».

Gli articoli che vanno forte sono le vernici dalle tonalità accese: arancione, blu, giallo per la scarpa da donna. Molto bene l’intrecciato per borse ed accessori. «Un trend in evidenza negli ultimi due anni per l’abbigliamento sono le applicazioni in pelle come elemento che impreziosisce maniche, tasche e bordi.

In particolare, la macrocategoria degli accessori in pelle registra vendite folli sul nostro sito, dimostrandosi così un segmento che beneficia dei periodi di crisi».

Ma è la borsa da donna, in rete come nel retail tradizionale, a fare la parte del leone. «Non posso rivelare i numeri precisi, ma vi assicuro che si tratta di cifre impressionanti. Anche in questo caso stiamo parlando di un articolo al riparo

dalla crisi: in periodi di congiuntura sfavorevole si risparmia sugli abiti, si acquista magari un vestito da 25 euro da H&M o Zara, ma non si rinuncia alla borsa, che diventa elemento distintivo di un outfit più castigato. Dev’essere bella e realizzata in materiali di altissima qualità. Un’importante novità è infine il ritorno della borsa da uomo, dal classico borsello anni ’70 a vere e proprie handbag in pelle intrecciata».

La Germania, anche nel settore e-commerce, si rivela profondamente diversa dai Paesi mediterranei. «Le vendite dipendono soprattutto da un parametro: la resistenza del prodotto alle intemperie e alle temperature invernali. Se imbottite, le giacche vendono benissimo tutto l’anno. Idem per gli stivali: se caldi, realizzati in pelle di alta qualità e dotati di suola carroarmato, i tedeschi sono disposti a spendere fino a 300-400 euro».

Guai però a non capire che vige un’idea di femminilità profondamente diversa da quella latina: si esce dal mercato. «La

donna tedesca è indubbiamente più sobria: evita eccessi, tacchi alti, troppi fronzoli. I marchi che hanno dimostrato di capirla, proponendole un articolo dal gusto italiano ma al contempo sobrio e molto comodo, vendono benissimo sul nostro sito. Gli altri arrancano». Comfort e calzata, ecco ciò che spinge la cliente teutonica all’acquisto. «Non stupisce quindi che il mercato della borsa di lusso stenti a decollare: manca l’attaccamento maniacale per il brand che caratterizza italiane e francesi. Qui a Berlino, per intendersi, non ho mai visto formarsi file chilometriche davanti alla boutique di Vuitton per Natale».

Il discorso si complica ulteriormente se si prendono in esame le preferenze dell’uomo tedesco, che dall’analisi delle vendite di Zalando.de risulta pressoché insensibile al fascino del prodotto in pelle di qualità. «Non solo ignora il trend della borsa per uomo: snobba addirittura la scarpa in pelle, a cui inspiegabilmente preferisce il sandalo da trekking che acquista anche d’inverno, presumibilmente per uso domestico. Mi spingerei a dire che è indifferente allo shopping online: se in Italia, in misura leggermente inferiore rispetto a Francia e Gran Bretagna, la quota di clienti maschile è abbastanza simile a quella femminile, in Germania tale rapporto è completamente sbilanciato a favore delle donne. Riuscire a sedurre l’uomo tedesco è sicuramente una sfida complessa». ■

The web is for small brands Zalando, the e-commerce portal that specialises in shoes, is making the most of the retail crisis by selling the same products everywhere.

«Anyone looking for small quality brands these days buys them on the Internet» sustained the company’s Purchasing Manager

lothes for men, women and children, smart and casual, footwear and accessories, for a total of 600 brands and 40,000 products. Spread out over how many square metres? None. It’s all inside a computer screen or on the display of a Smartphone.

It really is extremely vast what is on offer from the German e-commerce site Zalando, founded in Berlin three years ago as a retailer specialising in selling shoes on-line and nowadays present on all the main European markets with supplies that have gone up five-fold. From Germany it made its way into France, Holland, Great Britain and has now also arrived in Italy. A spectacular growth, which, nevertheless, hides a secret: Zalando was “incubated” by Rocket Internet, one of the most prolific web investors on a European level, capable of involving corporate giants, such as the Swedish Investment Bank AB Kinnevik and both Tengelmann and Holtzbrinck Ventures in Germany, in the development of this young start-up company.

Unlike its competitors, who just deal with the remnants, Zalando focuses its supplies exclusively on apparel and footwear that is “in season”, therefore, acting as a conventional retailer in terms of the purchasing profile and sending its buyers along to all the main industry-based trade-fairs to pick the samples and sign the orders. The results came in sooner than expected: just one year after being launched on the web, Zalando was the main shoe retailer in Germany. Now the prospects of further expansion are looking particularly promising for the ‘Made in Italy’ production chain, which it is planning to focus much more on in the future. Claudia Caldara, a buyer for Italy, talked about e-commerce as a compulsory outlet for small leather brands that invest in quality. «It’s not me saying this, it’s what analysts within the industry are telling us: since the high streets in city centres almost all over Europe seem to have come out of the same mould, with the usual few top brands of international chains that have taken the place of what was once reserved for family-run stores, anyone who is on the look-out for quality is now turning more and more towards e-commerce».

To overcome this trend, in the very near future Zalando will be increasing its purchase of leather goods that are crafted and ‘Made in Italy’.

«The company has decided to veer more and

more towards Italian tastes. In actual fact, this will be reflected in a more extensive opening towards home-grown brands, especially the small Tuscan- and Marche-based concerns that have a great tradition behind them when it comes to working with this material, with products whose quality is recognised not only on the German market, but also on all those where the portal is up and running». And the ability to absorb the products? «We are now a really big company, capable of handling large volumes. For some brands, such as the “Mai più senza” shoes from the Marche region, we have actually become the sole retailer. I must point out, though, that, today, every contract is agreed upon individually with the manufacturer, who has the freedom to choose the retail price of the product».

So, we make full use of the observatory of these big retailers – operative on five European markets that are very different from each other in terms of taste – to understand how sales are doing on the Old Continent. «The Italian brands that are already part of our selection have proved to be a great success. Fratelli Rossetti and Studio Pollini, to mention just two of the most famous, sell well anywhere. The same can be said for emerging brands like Lilimill. More recently, a number of north-European brands, such as Mimic Copenhagen and Dico Copenhagen, have also started to rouse a lot of interest».

The best-selling product is patent leather that comes in bright colours: orange, blue and yellow for women’s shoes. And the braided look is very popular for bags and accessories. «One trend that has emerged over the last two years for apparel are leather applications used as an element that embellishes sleeves, pockets and trims. Sales, especially within the macro-category of leather accessories, are just crazy on our website, proving to be one segment that benefits from periods of crisis». But it is women’s bags, both on-line and in traditional retail, that take the lion’s share. «I can’t tell you the exact figures, but I can assure you that they are really impressive: more than half of our income in leather circles comes from bag sales. Also in this case we are taking about an object that has managed to weather the crisis: when times are hard people spend less on clothing, buying a dress perhaps for 25 Euros from H&M or Zara, but they never scrimp when it comes to bags,

which are a distinctive element of a much plainer outfit. It has to be eye-catching and made out of top quality materials. Finally, something else that is new is the return of the man-bag, from the classic 1970s bag to actual handbags made out of braided leather». Germany, also in the e-commerce sector, is proving to be extremely different from Mediterranean countries.

«Sales depend mainly on just one parameter: the product’s ability to withstand inclement weather and Winter temperatures. If padded, jackets sell really well all year round. The same can be said for boots: if they are warm, made out of top quality leather and fitted with a treaded sole, the Germans are prepared to pay up to 300-400 Euros for them». One thing you have to understand, though, and that is that the idea of femininity in Germany is very different from that in Latin countries. «German women are undoubtedly plainer: they avoid excess, high heels and too many frills. The brands that have shown that they understand them, by coming up with a product based on Italian taste but which, at the same time, is plain and very comfortable, do very well on our site. The others just struggle along». Comfort and fit, this is what encourages the Teutonic clientele to buy. «It comes as no surprise then to hear that the market of luxury bags is finding it hard to get off the ground there: there’s not that maniacal affection for the brand that characterises both the Italians and the French. For example, here in Berlin, I have never seen queues a mile long outside the Vuitton store at Christmas».

The situation becomes more complicated if you take into consideration the preferences of German men, who, from sales analysis carried out

by Zalando.de, are basically indifferent to the charm of products made out of quality leather.

«They don’t just ignore the trend for men’s bags, they turn their noses up at leather shoes too, preferring, unexplainably, trekking sandals which they also buy in the Winter, presumably to wear indoors. I’m forced to say that they are also indifferent to shopping on-line: if, in Italy, be it to a slightly lesser extent than in France and Great Britain, the number of male customers is quite similar to the number of women, in Germany this ratio is completely unbalanced in favour of the women. Managing to get a German man to sit down is a complex challenge, no mistake!». ■
