2017-18 Impact Report | Alpha Chi Omega Foundation

Dear Sisters and Friends,

Agnes Theresa Steiner Beta Eta (Florida State University) 2017-18 Foundation Chair

Mary Pat Lambke Beta Epsilon (Michigan State University) 2018-19 Foundation Chair

We cannot begin to count the ways our generous donors have helped us amplify the impact Alpha Chi Omega is having on our sisters. 2017-18 was a tremendous year and we have YOU to thank! As we celebrate 40 years of making a difference through the Alpha Chi Omega Foundation, it’s remarkable to consider the role each of you has played along the way. Your investment in the Real. Strong. Women.® Experience reflects your wisdom and devotion as you empower Alpha Chi Omega to transform the lives of our members. This year’s Impact Report highlights the many ways we have supported Alpha Chi Omega’s educational and leadership programs that will reach more than 20,000 collegiate members in the next year. It also highlights new ways we are engaging with our alumnae to support their lifelong journey to reach the heights. We are ever so grateful for your generosity. Every time you give, you strike a transformational note in the life of one more sister, making a forever difference in her future. Your gifts enabled the Alpha Chi Omega Foundation to grant more than $1.8 million in 2017-18. Thanks to YOU, we are developing real, strong women by funding programs like Let’s Talk Love, one of Alpha Chi Omega’s four signature programs rotated through our collegiate chapters each year. Every chapter and every collegiate member benefits from your generosity. Thank you for faithfully advancing your commitment to our shared mission. Only by working together can we equip each new generation of Alpha Chi Omega sisters with the tools and resources they need for success in the classroom and beyond. Loyally,

40 Years of Impact Since its earliest days, Alpha Chi Omega has embraced service to others as an important expression of our core values and beliefs. In 1978, Alpha Chi Omega built on that tradition by establishing the Alpha Chi Omega Foundation so members and friends could financially support priority educational and philanthropic programs and receive the benefits of charitable giving. Through its first 40 years, the Foundation has been a trailblazer among NPC sorority foundations, being the first to hire a full-time

Fraternity Grant

$735,334 was granted to Alpha Chi Omega Fraternity in

support of educational and philanthropic programs including Leadership Academy, consultant training, domestic violence awareness initiatives, Volunteer Summit, Women & Wisdom, MyJourney, Global Service Initiative, REPRESENT and more. Thanks to your generous gifts to the Real. Strong. Women. Fund each year, and supplemented by the dollars raised during the For Now, Forever campaign, we have been able to significantly increase our grant to the Fraternity each year since 2010 – allowing the Fraternity to develop and expand life-changing programs. Since 2010, your gifts have helped: • Expand rotational chapter educational programs to four, so every chapter now receives one program each year • Double the number of annual Leadership Academy participants

• Triple attendance at Volunteer Summit, our alumnae leadership development program • Expand programming for domestic violence awareness and prevention • Implement MyJourney, a four-year life skills program for collegiate sisters • L aunch Women & Wisdom virtual mentoring program and regional events • Introduce Social Excellence Training to better equip our chapter members with recruitment skills they’ll use in their future careers •G row programs addressing personal responsibility, safety and mental health These transformational programs are helping Alpha Chi Omega sisters reach new heights! For Now, Forever paved the way and elevated our capacity – but to continue to amplify Alpha Chi and sustain these initiatives, the support of every sister, every year, is essential and appreciated.

Leadership Academy impacted my experience as chapter president by giving me resources, advice and information to use during my term. One of the keynote speakers really spoke to me. She talked about knowing your limits, never saying you’re sorry for things out of your control and focusing on the people who are there rather than the ones who aren’t there. - Justice Miller (Delta Chi, Willam Woods University) 5 | ACW Impact Report 2017-18

Housing

$548,370 in tax-deductible donations were raised

through the Foundation’s Chapter Housing Funds by local house corporations and the National Housing Corporation for educational areas and equipment for chapter facilities. The Foundation’s Chapter Housing Funds allow donors to make tax-deductible gifts to support a portion of chapter facility construction, renovation, equipment, furnishings and ongoing maintenance projects. The portion of a project’s funds that can be raised through the Foundation is based on the percentage of the facility that is educational space. Chapter Housing Funds can be established with an initial gift of $5,000 or more and can be used for large housing campaigns as well as smaller projects. Contact the Foundation to learn more about how to establish a Chapter Housing Fund for your chapter.

Philanthropy

$734,546 was raised by 69 collegiate and alumnae

chapters for local domestic violence agencies and other local charities through the Local Philanthropic Initiatives (LPI) program.

“The LPI program allows us to support the Alpha Chi Omega Foundation and our local domestic violence shelter. This supports our local community needs along with the Foundation. It’s a win-win.” - Bev Nichols (Mu Mu, Kansas City), alumnae chapter president “The LPI process was easier than I expected, and the online link was straightforward! The Alpha Chi Omega Foundation is one of our philanthropies and, while our events are held mainly to raise money for local shelters and to raise awareness for domestic violence, this is an easy way to make sure a portion of the proceeds from the events can benefit the Alpha Chi Omega Foundation too. I think it’s awesome that you can use the LPI program no matter how much money you raise.” - Mackenzie Spaulding (Zeta Sigma, Missouri State University), VP philanthropy

Thousands of collegians are just beginning their journey to becoming real, strong women. However, the world they face has different challenges from the one that welcomed us. Their educational costs have soared, and there is more pressure to add professional skills to academic studies. These young women, more than previous generations, must juggle work, school, internships and personal lives, and when they become alumnae, their challenges will change and multiply! Alpha Chi Omega is more important than ever before. To thrive as a sisterhood, we must help our members thrive individually and realize their fullest potential. Your gifts to the Foundation help Alpha Chi Omega change lives!

- Angela Costley Harris (Alpha Beta, Purdue University), National President

Scholarships and Grants 5 new endowed funds created $254,177 in scholarships awarded to 157 members (32% of the 495 applicants received scholarships)

$35,557 in educational assistance grants awarded to 23 members (51% of the 45 applicants received grants) $28,175 in member assistance grants awarded to 39 members (almost $20,000 for disaster recovery assistance)

$66,794 in Love & Loyalty grants made to collegiate and alumnae chapters for educational and philanthropic programming

“Having to pay for college is difficult and there was a moment when my ability to pay for my dues was challenged. Being selected for this scholarship allowed me to continue my membership in Alpha Chi, which has provided me with a support system full of strong women. Through the support and guidance I get from my sisters, I can devote myself to my academic success and involvement on campus. I cannot express how much this scholarship means to me and the positive impact it has had on me.” - Michelle Nguyen (Iota Lambda, Texas Christian University) “Our sisterhood means growing stronger together. Without the help of my sisters and the Alpha Chi Omega Foundation, my growth would be less than it is today. While this sisterhood has helped shape who I am, Alpha Chi has encouraged me to continue seeking academic success. Receiving this scholarship enabled me to reach new heights. I aspire to one day be able to provide the same support that has been given to me these past four years.” - Shelby Young (Beta Eta, Florida State University)
