Aegle Recommends: Healthy and Tasty Dishes at The City Club and Balesin Island Club By: Mary Beatrix G. Diestro, RND, Aegle Wellness Center and Colleen Buenaventura, Integrated Marketing Communications Officer As we embark on another year, we turn over a new leaf and pursue our resolutions for a healthier lifestyle. Compensating for our holiday indulging entails a holistic view of our well-being, from assuming more active habits to a lean and nutritious diet. But eating healthily doesn’t necessarily equate to compromising on taste! Relish the various flavors from all over the globe under one roof at The City Club, as well as at Balesin Island Club, with some of our Aegle- and chef-recommended dishes at Salathip, A Taste of France, St. Tropez, and Toscana. Som Tum Marakoh 195 calories 70% carbohydrates 20% protein 10% fat Unlike the typical leafy salad, Som Tum Marakoh is shredded and highlights green papaya. One of the most popular dishes in the Land of Smiles, Som meaning “sour” and tum referring to the pounding of the ingredients used. It’s dressed in sweet palm sugar and drizzled with peanuts for a crunchy texture. This salad is rich in antioxidants, fiber, vitamins A & C, folate, and potassium, plus, it has anti-inflammatory properties. Those prone to food allergies should note, however, that it contains peanuts and shrimp. Available at Salathip. Baked Oysters “Rockefeller” with Spinach and Hollandaise 715 calories 5% carbohydrates 30% protein 65% fat This popular dish originated in New Orleans, with its naesake being John D. Rockefeller—America’s richest man at the time. These baked oysters are doused in creamy hollandaise sauce for that subtle tang that enhances the mollusks’ flavor. This dish is a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, vitamin A, and calcium. It’s best shared with a loved one since it’s said to be an aphrodisiac, and due to its high fat content from butter. Available at A Taste of France at The City Club and St. Tropez at Balesin Island Club. Dory alla Sorrentina 630 calories 5% carbohydrates 45% protein 50% fat The dish’s name alludes to Sorrento—a quaint townon a peninsula south of Italy, with Sorrentina translating to “Sorrento-style.” Get your fill of protein with Toscana’s crowd-favorite pan-fried dory; it’s a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, iodine, fiber, and has antioxidants from olives and tomatoes. It’s good for sharing and is best paired with a glass of wine for a classic match made in tasteful heaven! Available at Toscana.

RVO's Wine Selection: Celler de Capรงanes Lasendal Garnatxa Barrica Montsant Catalonia, Spain, 2007 Tasting Notes Deep garnet in color with flavors of ripe plum, cranberry, tart cherry, and cocoa; smooth tannins; medium body; and a crisp, dusty finish reminiscent of the dry vineyards that produced it. Serve this gentle wine with zarzuela, sausages with white beans, Bourbon-grilled lamb, or Tillamook cheddar with sesame crackers. Wine Features Type: Red Grape varieties: 85% Garnatxa (Grenache) 15% Syrah Available at The City Club.

It’s a new year and the start of a new decade! For sure, a lot of you have made your New Year’s resolutions and at least one of the top 5 items on your list will probably have something to do with living a healthy lifestyle. Living a healthier life might seem like a tall order—proper nutrition, exercise, inner happiness! But don’t worry— here are some friendly recommendations for you to make achieving that goal easier and more fun, especially since it involves a unique island getaway.
Get Fit and Active Balesin is also a perfect place to shed those extra pounds you gained from all the holiday indulging. You can sign up for a fun workout session at the Sports Center with the island’s in-house fitness trainer, Coach Smile, to get back in shape. You can also hit the road and jog, walk, or bike around the island, surrounded by the lush tropical vegetation—it’s best to set off in the early morning or late afternoon, when the sun is lower in the sky.
There’s always something soothing about the sound of ocean waves, the caress of the sea breeze, and the feeling of warm sand between your toes. Being near the ocean also tends to have a positive impact on both your mental and physical health. Play and Unwind The first quarter of the year brings cool trade winds, or amihan, to the Pacific Ocean side of the island. This weather is perfect for aquatic sports like kiteboarding and windsurfing, and the Mykonos Beach Villas and Toscana beach are the perfect spots for this. Members and guests alike take advantage of this season to play and unwind on the island.

HEALTH & WELLNESS SECTION
The Age of Predictive Medicine by Benedict Francis D. Valdecañas, MD, MSc, Aegle Wellness Center Medical Director There has been no other era in the evolution of medical science that has gone way back to basics than the one we all are in now. Medical nutrition is taking a look back at specific molecules in food. Sports and exercise medicine is taking a step back to reexamine the different biochemical processes in which our muscle cells produce energy. And preventive medicine has been identifying parts of the human genetic code that can be associated with all the diseases of mankind. In fact, I would even call this era one of predictive medicine, where we can now predict what diseases you can actually develop, to a certain degree of statistical accuracy, in your lifetime. For decades, we have been robotically submitting ourselves to the annual checkups required by our employers or our insurance companies. These executive tests look for abnormalities in blood markers that signify existing disease. But that’s just it; the disease exists already, albeit sans symptoms. What’s interesting is that these diseases that we tend to develop in our lifetimes are brought about by our current, innocent lifestyles, and thus, are preventable—that is, if we know what to do to avoid them. From experience, a number of clients I see in the clinic have diabetes, hypertension, or heart disease because they do not know that what they are eating, how they are working, and how they spend their spare time contribute to the development of these diseases.
14
What would you give to be able to know what diseases you are most apt to develop as a result of how you are living your life? With the completion of the Human Genome Project in 2003, the entire human genetic code was determined. What to make of this information was the focus of the next few years; identifying where in this blueprint particular diseases reside. Over the succeeding 10 years, medical science was able to identify specific mutations or changes in the genetic code that cause diseases particularly activated by specific environmental exposures. And so today, we now have a lock and key combination of which genetic conditions lead to what disease and what it takes to unlock them.
In view of this, a better laboratory examination is a test that would tell your doctor what your genetic makeup is and what diseases are encoded in this genetic map. This is a newly developed branch of medicine called genomics. And the study of what environmental factors trigger these genetic predispositions to manifest in your life is called epigenetics. Coupled with your usual annual blood examinations, these can yield a powerful base of information that your doctors can use to devise a lifestyle modification program that can prevent all these diseases you are prone to developing. Say, for example, your genomics test shows a high predisposition for developing diabetes. And although your fasting blood sugar has been within normal bounds for the past few years, your insulin levels have been steadily increasing. Your doctor can conclude that you are, based on your present lifestyle, headed towards developing diabetes even if your blood sugar is still not over the upper limits of the laboratory ranges. Then, your doctor can start you on a structured diet devoid of simple sugars that can prevent you from developing diabetes. All it takes is a thorough understanding by your doctor of how genomics can be applied in a clinical setting. Therefore, a complete wellness package has to start with a genomic test to determine your genetic predispositions, a hormonal profile to check your present state of health and ageing, and the usual blood chemistry to assess your current organ system functions. These should be done routinely to establish a basis upon which to design a lifestyle modification program geared towards improving your health status via the three pillars of wellness: nutrition management, personalized exercise, and customized supplementation. These are easily achieved with Aegle Wellness Center’s routine comprehensive testing program, designed for predictive medicine’s paradigm shift: having the ability to predict what diseases you are predisposed to develop in your life, how far along you are on that path, and what we can do to turn it around and prevent the disease from developing. All you have to do is start with our blood-based diagnostics. And your test results, through the help and guidance of our physicians, nutritionists, and exercise physiologists, can pave the way towards a healthier, disease-free future.

Play and Stay Active at The City Club By Nic Belasco, The City Club General Manager
Shed the holiday weight with our free circuit training and dance classes for members at the Dance Studio and 5th floor gym. Contact our Sports Desk for the schedule. We have what you need to get back into shape after a month of holiday bingeing!
This year, we will host the President’s Cup Badminton Tournament on Saturday, February 22. This all-day affair at the badminton courts will have up to 80 participants competing for medals, trophies, and most of all, bragging rights. Our tournament officials will level the players a week before the tournament to make sure there’s fair play and good competition. Games will be held from 8AM until 5PM, with dinner served and awards presentations to the winners at 6PM at the Club Lounge. This is the first of two singles and doubles badminton tournaments of the year, with the Smash Badminton Tournament coming in the 3rd quarter.
Although it’s early in the year, our Sports & Recreation Team is already preparing summer programs. We have a full roster to offer and schedules will be released soon. Your kids can develop their athletic abilities in our popular summer programs: gymnastics, basketball, futsal, kendo, kyudo, ballet, chess, and swimming.
We are launching The City Club Tennis League this February as well. This gives our members all of January to prepare their bodies and their tennis strokes for a monthlong league. We will be accepting participants during tennis socials and the league will kick off towards the end of February.
With volleyball getting increasingly popular, we are happy to announce that Gizelle and Bea Tan are launching a volleyball training program at the Club! Children under 12 years old will get the chance to learn basic to advanced techniques from these two UAAP veterans who conduct grassroots training across the country. Volleyball is a great addition to our roster because it gives our members’ children an additional option so they can get involved in sports at an early age.
The City Club’s sports facilities are unmatched in Metro Manila. Our Sports & Recreation team has everything set with sports events and activities throughout the year for you to take advantage of. We look forward to assisting our members in living an active lifestyle on their road to health and wellness.
Leagues and tournaments for members will be held throughout the year at the courts. Currently, The City Club Basketball League is ongoing and will finish mid-February. Club members and their teams have been battling it out since October. Games have been fiercely competitive and we have a tight race to the championship. Drop by the court and catch a glimpse of the action as they prove that ball really is a lifestyle.
