President’s
Message We have been honored to receive recognition for one of our newest properties, The Alpha Suites luxury serviced apartments. Just last month, TripAdvisor ranked The Alpha Suites the #1 hotel in Metro Manila out of 425 hotels, and #1 out of 1,026 Luzon hotels on its travel platform. And also in late June, The Alpha Suites was one of just 20 hotels out of 3,111 in Metro Manila to receive the Guest Review Award from Booking.com. Since The Alpha Suites only opened its doors about a year ago, this is an unprecedented achievement. Why not book a stay to experience the 5-star service, accommodations, and amenities for yourself ? We hope you enjoy reading Atmospheres, and encourage you to share your feedback with us at info@alphaland.com.ph ANNA ONGPIN

MICHAEL A.P.M. ASPERIN COO & BALESIN ISLAND CLUB CEO The City Club We’ve seen a lot of celebrations this summer at The City Club. We have honored our recent graduates with family gatherings here at the Club. Mothers and fathers were also shown appreciation for the hard work they do for their families. We’ve had barbecues for Easter and Father’s Day at the poolside where we took advantage of the great summer weather. Now, as we leave summer behind and enter the second half of 2019, it’s time for the next round of events. We’re starting off with our 5th Annual Wine & Whiskey Festival, the perfect way to celebrate 4th of July. We have the top wine and whiskey suppliers at the Top of the Alpha with The Maya Songbird on stage through the night. Sample the best labels while enjoying great music and pica-pica. Sports & Recreation has been buzzing all summer long with camps and clinics for all ages. The excitement won’t stop here as we have the upcoming City Club Basketball League, President’s Cup Badminton Tournament, and City Club Tennis Tournament for members and guests. We’ve also added the Bert Lozada Swimming School, an institution in swimming training, to our growing list of program providers. The Club will continue to be your sports and fitness hub with programs for all ages. If you haven’t noticed, we have renovated our business center meeting rooms in order to provide members with more space to conduct their corporate business events. Each room is expanded and upgraded with flat screens and projectors. And by popular demand, we added a 20-seat boardroom to address the need for your larger meetings. See you at the Club!

Chef Recommends: A Taste of France By Chef Celica Faeldona and Kat Garcia, Integrated Marketing and Communications Officer
French cuisine is known around the world for its fine technique and exquisite flavors across its different regions. The French themselves consider food and dining part of their culture, and not just for sustenance. According to UNESCO, French cuisine has the power to create togetherness, the pleasure of taste, and the balance between human beings and products of nature. Our chefs have mastered the art of French cuisine and have created signature dishes for members and guests to savor. Indulge in the rich flavors of France at The City Club’s specialty restaurant, A Taste of France. Bon appétit! melts in your mouth. The cinnamonspiced, caramelized apple slices blend well with the crisp pastry underneath and the vanilla ice cream topping. A perfect ending to your French meal.
RVO’S WINE SELECTION Mussels in White Wine Cream Sauce This appetizer is a feast for the senses. As the dish is served, the aroma of the creamy sauce greets you first. A teaspoonful of the sauce drizzled on the mussels allows them to take in the full flavor. Once you’ve finished all of the mussels, mop up the remaining cream with our crusty bread!
Slow-cooked Lamb Shank and Vegetable Tagine with Tabbouleh This plat principal is a culmination of three different elements all in one dish: the tender lamb shank, the slow-cooked vegetable stew, and the satisfying tabbouleh. Our fall-offthe-bone lamb shank is cooked low and slow for up to 6 hours to bring out the meat’s rich flavor. Perfectly complementing the lamb are the flavorful vegetable tagine and fragrant tabbouleh.

Dream Wedding Destinations in Paradise Nicole Rosales, Balesin Island Club Events & Banquets Manager
Balesin Island Club has established itself as a top destination wedding and event venue—with its naturally beautiful landscape and luxury amenities, Balesin has become the perfect home to stage grand and intimate festivities alike. Keeping the Promise: 2018 Tie the Knot Weddings in Paradise Every year, Alphaland Corporation hosts its own wedding fair, Tie the Knot, to feature the event venues of Alphaland properties. We are joined by the biggest names in the wedding industry, all under one roof to help make dream celebrations a reality. This year, we have successfully delivered that promise in paradise.
Mark Yu and Camille Salvador’s Wedding In an intimate celebration joined by their family and friends, Camille and Mark exchanged their vows beneath the shade of our iconic Dangcalan tree at the Balesin Spa. The clear blue skies were complemented by wedding accents of plum and mauve, and the lush evergreens surrounding the Balesin Spa gardens. The ceremony was followed by an indoor reception held at the Balesin Sala, after a sunset photo session by the beach. 8
This tropical wedding was a remarkable first for the then months-old 8-bedroom Private Villa, and despite putting it together in less than the average wedding planning duration, Jerome and Tiffany’s nuptials were definitely one for the books, and one of our most favorite weddings held in Balesin.

All at the Right Time. Whether it’s planned within a few months or for more than a year, it’s all possible with the right venue, at the right time.
Jerome Reyes and Tiffany Mathay’s Wedding On a windy February weekend, with the help of the Balesin team, Jerome went on bended knee to ask for Tiffany’s hand in marriage in a simple, romantic sunset set-up by the beach. The response was a resounding “Yes!” obviously, as just a little over three months later, Jerome and Tiffany had their beach wedding, and with a much bigger crowd to celebrate the day. The bridesmaids wore a lovely mix of canary and ginger-colored dresses, while the groomsmen looked equally dashing in their cloud and winecolored ensemble. Moving to the ceremony at the Balesin Chapel, all eyes were on Tiffany as she emerged in a Maureen Disini Teichert gown, and a teary-eyed Jerome patiently waited for her at the altar. At the 8-bedroom Private Villa, all hands were on deck as the Villa’s beachfront lawn was transformed into a tropical oasis for the cocktails and reception. A giant fabricated dance floor featuring the couple’s monogram was nothing short of perfect for a night of dancing and partying under the stars, which lasted until the wee hours of the morning.

Dreaming Big and Living It: Celebrating with the industry’s brightest for your big day. Hailed as one of the best destination venues for weddings and events, Balesin works with the most-renowned teams in the wedding industry to make the grandest and best weddings happen.
Angelo Polinario and Sophia de la Victoria’s Wedding Rewind to 2016, Sophia first pitched her interest in celebrating her wedding on the island. After a year or two, Sophia, now certain of getting married, knew in her heart that Balesin was the only place she’d want for her wedding. So three years later, Sophia and Angelo’s dream wedding finally came true in Balesin. Dominated by shades of blush and grey, an afternoon Christian ceremony was celebrated together with their family and friends at the wedding ceremony favorite Balesin Spa garden. Sophia walked down the aisle to the tune of “I Can’t Help Falling In Love” in her Maggie Sottero gown, as Angelo waited for her, attired in a Harry Rosen suit. After a refreshing serving of halo-halo for cocktails at the The Balesin Royal Villa’s Jacuzzi deck, a beautiful fireworks display lit up the skies above and kicked off a night to remember forever—exactly how Angelo and Sophie wanted it to be three years ago.

Ernesto Razon and Regine Plan’s Wedding Together for more than a decade now, Ernesto and Regine finally said yes to forever last summer. Though they initially planned for an intimate wedding, they decided to work with the top event suppliers for their big day. Balesin was the obvious choice as they were already smitten with the idea of having their reception at The Balesin Royal Villa. Guests were treated on the first night to a laid-back, all-white Italian dinner at the Toscana Courtyard, complete with sparklers, a DJ, and a good dose of fine wines and spirits. Come wedding day, the Balesin Chapel and The Balesin Royal Villa were successfully transformed by Amante Fleurs into a Havana Tropical Luxe spectacle featuring accents of pampas grass, lush greens, and a bright mix of tropical colors. Regine was dolled up by make-up artist Mariah Santos, and looked utterly divine in her Patricia Santos wedding gown. Looking dapper in his beige suit
and black tie, Ernesto was one teary-eyed groom as his bride walked down the aisle to Manila String Machine’s beautiful rendition of “From this Moment/How Do I Live” mash-up. Cocktails were served to welcome guests at the reception venue while the entourage had their sundown post-nuptial shoot. The evening was officially kicked off by an outstanding display of fireworks by Dragon Fireworks, followed by a sumptuous Spanish dinner from the Costa del Sol culinary team. The same-day edit photo and video previews by Nice Print Exige Photos and Weddings were a great way to cap off the program.
Celebrating at Your Island Home Bryan Prieto and Tinkay Crespo’s Wedding It was a colorful, fun-filled weekend for Bryan and Tinkay as they celebrated their happily ever after with family and friends in June 2018. Together with Bryan’s proud parents Dennis Valdes and Tessa PrietoValdes, Bryan and Tinkay welcomed their guests at the Private Villa of Alphaland Chairman Bobby Ongpin, who hosted the all-white dinner himself. With everyone enjoying the beats dropped by DJ Jen Miller, it was a night of emotional speeches, great food, and of course, good booze.
Photo credit: Nice Print Exige Photos and Weddings
What was originally set for an intimate, 75-guest wedding ended up with more than 150 guests, 30 suppliers, and happy, satisfied newlyweds. Truly, with the right event suppliers and venue, the celebration of your dreams is possible.
The entourage looked delightful in rainbow and summer hues, with Tessa Prieto-Valdes leading the pack in a beautiful bright red gown matched with a headdress. Bryan tearfully watched in a sky-blue Randy Ortiz suit, as Tinkay walked down the aisle in a lovely Patricia Santos gown. The wedding was graced by some influential names in the business sector, including RVO himself who was a principal sponsor, and members of the Romualdez, Prieto, Soler, and Valdes clans. 11
Fast forward to the wedding reception: the dance floor was the perfect place for Bryan and Tessa to start the evening as they led a fun, extraordinary mother-and-son dance to Bruno Mars’ 24K Magic, with Tessa in a spectacular costume, of course. SubProjekt band fired up the crowd’s energy and everyone continued to party until the wee hours of the morning at the Balesin Music Lounge.

Say I Do With an Unparalleled Mountain View By Lei Icmat Tubig
Of all the million things you can do for love, falling in love and getting married are those that yield a blissful sigh; the kind that so easily bring back feelings of wonder that can make your mind wander for hours, or days even. It has been six months since CJ and I got married and I can attest that up to this day, we still casually browse our wedding files—photos, videos, and in my case, even spreadsheets! I think I have fallen in love not only with CJ, but with our wedding day and planning as well! When I randomly remember our wedding at Alphaland Baguio Mountain Lodges, it fills my heart with happiness and contentment.
genuine warmth and enthusiasm, we would be checked on and asked about the tiniest details of our requests, we would be supplemented with suggestions so as to turn the products of our imaginations into reality, and we were even showered with thoughtfulness in the form of a surprise gift. I consider us a lucky and blessed couple to have said our I do’s with an unparalleled mountain view and to have met and received such excellent service from this team of incredible individuals. Always and forever, Alphaland Baguio Mountain Lodges will be a part of our happily ever after.
Our wedding day will always be a reminder of how bountiful the Man up there is. I remember how the skies were as clear as they should be—blue skies to mark the beginning of something wonderful, pink skies to fall in love with, and starry skies to wish upon. The stunning skies were enhanced by the cold breeze, the holiday cheer of December, the memorable scent of the pine trees, and the best views of the mountains that surround Baguio City all the way to Mount Pulag, where CJ proposed to me. I dare say it was the perfect location, and yet perfect would still be an understatement. Throughout all of this, the Alphaland team was nothing short of extraordinary. For all of our visits and stays, we were always treated like royals—we would always be welcomed with

HEALTH & WELLNESS SECTION
Taking Care of Your Colon By Dr. Luis Valencia, Medical Associate, Aegle Wellness Center
The colon, or the large intestine, is more than a repository of undigested material prior to elimination. At around 5 feet long, it houses billions of bacteria known as our normal gut flora. These “healthy bacteria” enable the body to absorb micronutrients such as vitamins (vitamin K and vitamin D, for example), and defend the body against potential toxins and infectious bacteria. The colon also has the ability to reabsorb water and important electrolytes, such as sodium and potassium. It thus functions as an important water source in times of decreased water intake. Colon function is strongly influenced by the types and volume of food we eat, the timing of our food intake, water intake, regular physical activity, stress level, and adequacy of sleep and rest. The colon is very active at night while you rest as the body works to complete the digestive process. Overeating, especially during celebrations, can take a toll on your colon. During these times, we tend to binge eat, indulge in very sweet desserts, drink too many alcoholic beverages, and end up getting inadequate sleep from all the festivities. Deep sleep can then be further delayed as certain uncomfortable symptoms arise when we lie down after overindulging, such as abdominal fullness, feeling of “gassiness,” occasional nausea, or even acid reflux. It’s not unlikely that frequent eating binges can result in disrobed bowel movements which may vary from periods of constipation to periods of diarrhea, and even stools consisting of incompletely digested food. How can you restore the healthy gut flora in your colon? Undergoing colon hydrotherapy, or colonics, is a simple way to assist the colon in returning it to its normal function. People who
have very irregular bowel movements, such as recurrent periods of constipation lasting for days, or intermittent diarrhea, benefit the most from colonics. Prior to the treatment, you consult with an Aegle physician to screen you for any possible contraindications, such as recent abdominal surgery, or a history of gastro-intestinal cancer. The procedure is simple. Distilled water is infused through a rectal speculum and then pumped in gently through a machine. The water and the low pressure then enable the colon to rid itself of its contents. People who’ve tried colonics usually report feeling lighter with less abdominal distress afterwards. At Aegle Wellness Center, we always provide a summary of do’s and don’ts after the treatment, which includes a list of foods that will be beneficial, as well as foods that must be avoided. We also strongly recommend that probiotics be taken on a regular basis, especially if you may be suffering from recurrent bouts of irregular bowel movements. Colonics can provide relief for your gastro-intestinal symptoms. It’s not however, a solution for recurring symptoms. At Aegle, we consider it important to discover the root cause. Aside from testing for the presence or absence of gut inflammation, gut infestation, enzyme deficiencies, and efficiency of the normal gut bacteria, our medical team will also review your diet, lifestyle, and even hormone levels in order to optimize your colon health, and to ascertain the cause of your recurrent gut dysfunction. Your Aegle physician will discuss your results, and our nutritionists will recommend a personalized diet for your specific needs to make not only your gut bacteria, but your entire body, healthy.
