WHAT’S HOT AT UPMARKET

by Jelyn Dades

Summer is finally here!

Whether you’re heading to the beach, festive events, or exciting activities, look and feel your best with these summer staples from UpMarket!

Hand-woven Handbags and Beach Mats by Mabaysay Perfect for the beach, Coachella parties, and also for all-around casual wear, these hand-woven bags are made by local artisans from Basey, Samar with raw materials like ticog and buri. Keep the pesky grit away while sunbathing in style with these colorful beach mats. Not only will you look spectacular, you’ll also be supporting the livelihood and rehabilitation of local communities affected by Typhoon Haiyan with each purchase.

A Traveller’s Mist All that air-conditioning indoors and on long road trips and plane rides keeps you cool and relaxed, but prolonged aircon exposure unfortunately dries your skin. Keep it hydrated with A Traveller’s Mist by Ritual. Each spritz refreshes, thanks to elemi & pandan extracts, lemongrass, and tea tree & peppermint essential oils, while the mild palm alcohol and alkalized water also help counteract oil, dust and sweat.

6

Kitayama Wagyu Beef Level up your barbecue parties and backyard grills with Kitayama’s premium Wagyu beef. Their herds are pampered on lush pastures on Mt. Kitanglad, Bukidnon, and are raised free from hormones and enhancers. Enjoy pure beefy goodness with your loved ones all year round!

All-Natural Beverages Beat the heat the all-natural way. Coconut water hydrates three times better than water, making Just Coco your perfect summer quencher. The convenience of having fresh, pure and chilled buko juice in a bottle is the next best thing to sipping coconut water from a buko shell by the beach. For tea lovers, Lokalitea’s turmeric tea is a break from your usual summer blend. Choose from lemongrass, calamansi and pandan flavors, and get the full benefits of turmeric’s anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Aegle’s Ambrosia: Healthy Food Fit for the Gods

A restaurant review by Chef Alvin Magpantay

Aegle Wellness Center’s signature healthy food restaurant in Balesin Island Club opened its doors to its discriminatingly healthy clientele in mid-2017. Named after the mythologic food (or nectarine drink) of the gods of Olympus said to be their sustenance for immortality, Ambrosia serves gourmet food that aims to prolong life by adhering to healthy standards. The driving principle behind the development of Ambrosia and its carefully researched menu offerings is one the three pillars of Aegle Wellness Center’s foundation for preventive wellness: proper nutrition. Healthy food does not have to be bland or unexciting or unsatisfying. Nicola da Urbino’s The Food of the Gods in Olympus on a majolica dish (c.1530) The latest trends worldwide emphasize the importance of food in wellness and how it can actually serve as one of the most effective medicines you can use to address different diseases. We aim to make healthy eating more interesting without compromising the joy and fulfillment you should experience whenever you consume food. The Ambrosia team’s first-hand exposure to gourmet food preparation—acquired through training and immersion in different countries in Europe, North America and most of Asia—translates into a delightful culinary selection enjoyed by members and guests. We look forward to serving you and hope to see you soon at Ambrosia. My team at Ambrosia makes every effort to provide you with a unique dining experience worthy of gods and immortals. The meals offered in Ambrosia are carefully put together by Aegle’s nutritionists and medical specialists, and transformed into gourmet food through the magic of our chefs’ culinary talent and skill. This is to ensure that we provide members and guests with the best possible gastronomic experience whenever you honor us with a visit in this part of the island; my team at Ambrosia considers it our professional obligation to ensure that each one of you feels special and cared for. Premium imported meats, freshly caught Balesin seafood and hand-picked, island-grown organic vegetables that are transformed into fine culinary works of art represent the true essence of a good life aimed towards longevity. We do this by providing well thought-out meals that suit your body’s needs in parallel with world-class epicurean offerings.

The Authentic Flavors of Thailand in Salathip At Balesin Island Club and The City Club

By Ambassador Babe Romualdez

Every time the subject of most popular cuisines in the world comes up, Thai cuisine never fails to land among the top 10. The rich flavors in every dish are brought about by the combination of herbs and spices that make spicy, sweet, sour and salty work together in harmony. This is hardly surprising considering that Thai cuisine reflects Chinese, Malaysian, Cambodian, Vietnamese and Indonesian influences. But while many restaurants in the country offer Thai cuisine, only a few can really approximate the unique and authentic taste of dishes from this culturally rich country. Fortunately, one does not have to travel all the way to Thailand to enjoy authentic Thai food, thanks to Salathip restaurant at Balesin Island Club and The City Club. Aside from the relaxing ambience created by the tasteful interiors of dark brown teak wood and the Thai decor on the walls, the courteous and cheerful waitstaff are part of the reason why I always enjoy dining at Salathip. The main draw, of course, would undoubtedly be the food. For those who have not tried the flavors of Salathip, here are a few dishes I would recommend, for starters:

GOONG HUM PAH This is a personal favorite, which is a light and tasty appetizer of shrimp spring rolls (also known as “shrimp in a blanket”). While this dish may have similarities to other Asian dishes fried in a dough wrap, it has a distinct flavor because of the prawn marinade with citrus notes that go well with the seafood flavor.

PHAD THAI This is a popular dish with Thai noodles, lightly scrambled egg, peanuts and other ingredients that balance the sweet, sour and salty tastes that make Thai cuisine so different and unique. You may choose chicken or shrimp, depending on your preference. These three dishes, of course, are only a few of the great variety offered by Salathip, from soups to hot and cold appetizers, to the main course down to dessert – all of which will not disappoint. RVO’S WINE SELECTION

TOM YAM GOONG This spicy shrimp soup with herbs and the floral notes of lemongrass is a must-try. As one regular guest at Salathip has told me, you haven’t really tasted Thai unless you have tried this classic soup.

VIGNO VIGNADORES DE CARIGNAN De Martino, Maule Valley, Chile 2012 From vino, the Spanish word for wine, and adding the letter “g” from Carignan, a blackskinned wine grape variety of Spanish origin, Vigno is a single-vineyard Carignan produced from a 70-year old, dry-farmed, head-trained, and non-grafted vineyard in Maule Valley. A beautiful, perfumed nose with elegant yet rustic touches of cured meats, tree bark, smoke, ripe cherries, and subtle sweet baking spices, Vigno is aged for 24 months in large neutral oak barrels, or foudres. The result is a balanced, supple, meaty, and delicious wine. It also cellars beautifully for a decade. Available at all the specialty restaurants of The City Club.

HIDDEN GEMS IN BAGUIO

by Sienna Muncada and Emerald Bañares

As the summer capital of the Philippines, Baguio attracts visitors with its cool climate—a respite from the humid and sweltering city heat. But instead of going to the same tourist spots again this year, our proud Baguio resident Sienna Muncada recommends experiencing these sights that are off the beaten path.

1. Balbacua at Urban Kamote, Ili-Likha Artist Village

Baguio was recently hailed as a creative city by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and one reason for that is because of distinctive places like Ili-Likha Artist Village–a whimsical establishment built around trees and wooden sculptures which hosts a small artist and food community. I consider it a gem because it’s one-of-a-kind. The village is situated on an ordinary street in Baguio with the ubiquitous carinderias and street food everywhere. You don’t immediately notice anything unusual aside from the asymmetrical roof, but once you enter, the artwork and trinkets, mosaic floor tiles and bottles on the wall take you to an unconventional world of art and culture. Balbacua at Urban Kamote is named after its specialty, the Balbacua, a famous southern soup with oxtail or beef skin slow-cooked for hours.

10

2. Tam-awan Village Another artists’ and cultural haven in Baguio, Tam-awan Village has reassembled traditional Ifugao homes and Kalinga huts, art workshops and exhibits, dream-catcher and bead-making lessons, and indigenous music and dance demonstrations to preserve and share the Cordillera people’s art and culture. Those who want to truly experience the Cordilleran way of life can stay overnight in one the huts.

3. Japanese Tunnel

This historic tunnel dates back to World War II. A 150-meter tunnel now open for public viewing, it leads to different places in Baguio—Outlook Drive, the Presidential Mansion, and parts of Barangay Pacdal.

4. Mount Costa

A collection of 24 landscaped gardens inspired by the world’s best estates, Mount Costa offers plenty of open spaces where visitors can take a relaxing stroll around the 5,500-meter walking trails, reflect and meditate in the Zen Garden, and reconnect with nature in the 3-hectare resort. It’s one the newest attractions in town and is becoming more and more popular, with many of its visitors uploading on social media picturesque photos of the award-winning flowers, and selfies in the Mirror Garden. The entrance fee of Php350 is worth it because Mount Costa’s manicured gardens are unlike any others in the country. 11

5. Alphaland Baguio Mountain Lodges Heralded as the “Forbes Park of Baguio,” the Alphaland Baguio Mountain Lodges development is the best way to experience the way Baguio used to be 50 years ago: peaceful and rustic, with fragrant pine-scented, pollution-free mountain air and breathtaking, unspoiled vistas. Master-planned by EcoPlan of Florida, USA, the same master planner for Balesin Island Club, the development of 300 lodge-style log homes is situated on an 82-hectare property that’s a thousand feet higher than Baguio City. “Who would have thought that a place like this exists in the Philippines?” is a comment I always get from visitors, especially foreigners. Words, photos and even videos don’t fully capture it. You must really come and see and experience it for yourself.

Jimmy Alapag on Career & Fatherhood by Emerald Bañares Ask anyone in the basketball industry about Jimmy Alapag and all you’ll hear are words of admiration and praise. The all-time leading three-point king of the PBA, Jimmy’s stellar basketball career keeps getting better, with his new role as the coach of Alab Pilipinas, the Philippines’ ASEAN Basketball League team. Despite being busy with coaching and flying around South East Asia for the league, it’s evident that the proud father of three makes it a point to spend quality time with his family. Here’s what Jimmy has to say about fatherhood and how he balances it with his new role as Alab Pilipinas coach.

at The City Club is definitely a family favorite—the kids love spending time at the pool, and there’s also plenty of activities for them, and lots of food choices for when they get hungry. My wife and I enjoy having lunch or dinner at one of the many restaurants. And of course, even while coaching, I make time to get in the gym to make sure I’m staying fit.

How do you balance the demands of fatherhood and your career? I think that’s always the challenge in life, finding the balance of time between our career and family. As much as I love the game of basketball, and the new challenge of being a head coach, my family always comes first. What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned from your career in basketball that you want to impart to your children? Work ethic was everything to me when I was playing. I wanted to be the best, but to be great at anything, you have to dedicate yourself to your craft and be willing to put in the time and effort. Whatever my kids decide to do when they grow up, I’ll encourage them to work hard and be the best they can be. How has being a father helped you become better at what you do, and as an individual? Becoming a father has been life-changing. My kids inspire me every day to try to be not just the best coach, but more importantly the best father and husband I can be for our family. How do you spend quality time with your family? We see you and your family quite often here at The City Club! Days off from coaching are always dedicated to spending time with family. We love bringing our kids to The City Club. The pool 15

Where do you go to get away? A fun-filled summer escapade at Balesin

by Luisa Banta

There’s something particularly exciting about summer vacations. In a tropical country like the Philippines where the temperature is at its hottest during this time of the year, the ultimate summer getaway is where you get to enjoy a splash in the cool water or stay in the cool indoors for a relaxing afternoon nap. Why choose when you can do both—kick back and relax, as well as enjoy all kinds of activities—on a unique private island? With its perfect beach weather, summer is the best time to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy different outdoor and indoor activities with family and friends at Balesin Island Club.

After a fun-filled day of exploring, there’s no better way to relax and rejuvenate than with a special massage treatment at the Balesin Spa. In addition to our Zen-inspired spa suites, our spa also boasts a 32-meter lap pool, beachside massage cabañas, and steam and sauna rooms. For those who prefer to keep relaxing in the water, thalassotherapy in Aegle Wellness Center is a must-try. The long summer will be extra-special with Balesin’s line-up of events. Check out our Events Calendar on page 24.

What to do? Home to powdery white sand beaches and amazing sunsets, Balesin’s natural beauty is without a doubt the main attraction of the island, especially during the summer when it’s best to frolic around the island and explore its different beaches and coves by foot – from the calm Lamon Bay side to the more adventurous Pacific Ocean side of the island. Long walks along the beach and around the island on the main roads are both relaxing and enjoyable. For beach bums and those who want to get a tan, a leisurely walk along the beach is essential, while for those who seek adventure and physical activity, a 5-km to a 21km adventure trail run in the morning is just the ticket. Speaking of adventure, you can also opt for fun horseback rides along the beach and at our stables, where you can choose from our 15 horses and ponies. And for more fun family quality time, visit the Balesin Animal Farm which houses 33 birds of different species, 7 tortoises, and a dozen bunnies—a perfect haven for animal and nature lovers.

Takeout Workout

Incorporating Exercise in the Workplace

by Benedict Francis Valdecañas, MD, MSc Orthopaedics, Sports, & Regenerative Medicine

Not too long ago, another release from the Jurassic Park franchise, Jurassic World, shattered box office records while amusing audiences with the thrilling consequences of a genetically modified dinosaur. However, one of the scenes that gripped viewers even more than a rampaging Indominus Rex was that of main protagonist Claire Dearing’s ability to run from dinosaurs while wearing high heels, possibly the worst footwear ever for running sprints or long distances without sustaining serious injury. The phenomenon has even crossed over into the science world, coinciding with a new study that examined the effects on ankle strength and balance while wearing high heels. Although that study is beside the point of this article, exercising in your office garb is exactly what this article is about. Talking about working out in the urban jungle may conjure up pictures in your mind of more executive women running in their stilettos on the concrete tracks of our central business districts. Squeezing exercise in one’s hectic weekday schedule does not mean that, nor does it mean just working out in the mezzanine gym during your lunch hour. Most people in my clinic remark, when I recommend exercising regularly as long-term treatment for their musculoskeletal complaints, that they don’t have the time. While it is common knowledge that regular exercise, and the keyword there, my friends, is regular, most people who actually need it do not invest enough time for it. Here are some tips on how you can integrate exercise into your so-called hectic work day, or even better, work week. (Better yet if you get out of bed an hour earlier each day to squeeze in a regular routine in a nearby gym or your home perhaps.) MOBILE MONDAYS. Start your work week with a relaxing boost. To most of you that may sound like an oxymoron. But being a tad more relaxed on the most difficult of days may actually help boost your efficiency at work. Instead of driving yourself to work as you usually would, get a cab, a GrabCar, or even join a carpool. This will relieve you of the stress of driving through Monday rush-hour traffic. Then either way,

have yourself dropped off a block or two away from the office, walking healthily the rest of the way. Of course this new movement will entail getting ready earlier than usual to give time for the walk and getting a ride. TOP-UP TUESDAYS. Tuesdays To Take The Televator. There, you won’t ever forget. Now don’t be a wise guy and say you work on the 78th floor. Walking up eight floors is equivalent to running on the treadmill at 7 kph for 8 minutes. So get off the elevator on the 70th floor and walk the rest of the way up the stairs. Then challenge yourself by getting off at lower floors each Tuesday. WOBBLY WEDNESDAYS. Engage your core while working at your desk. How? Use a Swiss Ball as a stool all day long. Sitting on an exercise ball at your desk engages your core muscles without you even knowing it. In fact, it doesn’t even have to be only on Wednesdays. ‘Nuff said. TALL THURSDAYS. This is actually nothing new; young companies have instituted this for quite some time now: Hold your business meetings around the boardroom table on your feet. Yes, middle-aged males, studies show, are 3% less likely to increase their visceral fat if they are up and about at least 7 hours per day. FOOTLOOSE FRIDAYS. On the day we thank the Almighty for ending the week, end it right yourself by making your trip to you and your officemates’ favorite watering hole on foot. Of course you’d have to pick a place near the office, say within a one-kilometer radius. Studies show that exercising before a binge is the surest way not to gain pounds from all that liquid sugar you are about to chug down, not to mention all that bar chow. So walk your way purposefully to that week-ender drinking rendezvous. There you have it. A simple workout program well-integrated into your hectic work week. No more excuses, right?

SPOTLIGHT ON:

Nic Belasco by Joaquin Henson of Philippine Star

Former PBA player and now City Club general manager Nic Belasco plans to create a program for retired athletes to live a productive life, drawing on his own experience of hitting near rock bottom before finding a secure job that leverages his college degree. Belasco, 43, left a corporate job with Visa in San Francisco to try his luck in the PBA in 1997, a year after graduating with a psychology degree from Notre Dame de Namur in Belmont, California. He played for eight teams in 16 PBA seasons and won eight championships under coaches Jong Uichico, Tim Cone and Luigi Trillo. His PBA career had its ups and downs. After 14 years in the PBA, Belasco moved back to the US with his family. Two years later, he played seven months for coach Ariel Vanguardia with the Westports Malaysia Dragons in the ABL. That led to a return to the PBA for two more seasons. Belasco was picked by Kia in the 2014 dispersal draft but couldn’t land a contract so he looked for other options. Today, Belasco is general manager of The City Club, a Makati business and leisure members-only organization that covers three hectares and includes nine restaurants and extensive sports and business facilities. More than 100 employees report to Belasco. In addition, he is an assistant coach with Phoenix in the PBA and operates BUSA (Belasco Unlimited Skills Academy). A friend introduced him to The City Club, where he set up BUSA camps for basketball, which he supervised, and tennis, which his wife—a former junior circuit player in Australia— ran. Belasco was later appointed City Club sports director, then assistant general manager, and last December, was promoted 22

to general manager. “It’s a dream come true,” said Belasco. “I’m able to use my psychology degree and my background in basketball in my job. I’m putting people in a position to be successful. I’m applying motivational techniques.” “At City Club, I’ve introduced a lot of things that not only cut expenses but also generated revenues. During the day, it’s a place for business meetings and sports activities. At night, it’s a magnet for great entertainment with bands performing during the week – Highway 54, Sayan Band, Sabor Latino, Marmalade, Red Picasso, Young Once. The traffic we’ve created is phenomenal. Our restaurants are full, our membership is rising and the value of a share is appreciating. I’m grateful to our chairman RVO (Alphaland’s Roberto V. Ongpin) for making things happen.” Belasco said from his life’s lessons, he wants to teach retired athletes not to make the same mistakes he did. “I’ve asked (business consultant) Jay Bernardo and his wife Dina to help in creating a foundation where we can channel funds to retired athletes, particularly former PBA players and Olympians,” he said. “We want to establish pension plans, teach retired athletes how to run businesses, how to live their lives productively after retiring from playing. We could also reach out to current athletes, even those at the collegiate level, so they begin to think long-term.” “When my wife and I started BUSA, we were doing things on our own, bringing equipment from one place to another by ourselves. It was a lot of hard work, perseverance and determination. If you set a goal in your life, put your mind, heart and soul into it and you can’t go wrong.”
