Rewarding excellence & innovation in advertising

he best in Zimbabwean advertising during 2014 was honoured at the annual DStv Ngoma Awards which recognise excellence and innovation in advertising each year. The luncheon event, held on April 11 at Harare’s Cresta Lodge, was attended by almost 200 people from the advertising industry.
The awards competition was sponsored by MultiChoice Zimbabwe, represented at the luncheon by Norman Raisbeck, Gerald Ngonyamo and Liz Dziva. Jericho Advertising took top honours by winning the Feel Every Moment award for campaign of the year with their radio-based campaign on in-car safety for Toyota Zimbabwe.
This campaign will now automatically go forward into South Africa’s Loerie Awards later in the year, in the regional section of that competition. More than half of the awards presented this year were collected by Shift Engage, a recently-established advertising agency, for various entries for their clients, the first time in many years one single agency
has dominated the Ngomas. Chief judge Xolisa Dyeshana of South African ad agency Joe Public praised Zimbabwean agencies for achieving high standards against a background of many challenges. Fellow judges were Rudo Nyangulu, a specialist in digital media and Saki Mafundikwa, a graphic designer and visual artist.
The awards event was preceded by a workshop for industry professionals, at which Xolisa Dyeshana outlined what constitutes “a whole new world” of advertising with many opportunities for agencies to take their clients to new business levels and add significantly to their bottom lines. Principal sponsor for this year was MultiChoice Zimbabwe, with supporting sponsorship from Toyota Zimbabwe, Solution Centre — which provided an iPad as the prize for the winner of the craft award — Advantage Flooring, Waterworkz, Cresta Lodge and Cresta Sango Conference Centre and Organikks Restaurant.

‘Design uniquely Zimbabwean products‘ S
PEAKING at the DStv Ngoma Awards presentation lunch, international judge Xolisa Dyeshana urged advertising agencies to design unique products. He said while South America was doing well in this regard, South Africa was still struggling with its own unique signature in its advertisements. He, therefore, was looking for work that is uniquely Zimbabwean.
He went on to say agencies should inspire clients with great work. “Don’t give clients what they could have done themselves,” he said. “Advertising agencies are paid to create magic.” Going through the entries, he found that the good products rose to the top, but sadly there was too much that was mediocre. He defined creativity as the
ability to think differently and said the awards were the pinnacle of creativity. Dyeshana said the whole advertising industry must come together in order to do better work. He urged everyone walk away from the presentation inspired. “Don’t walk away with excuses,” he said. “Think differently, create and add real value to your clients’ businesses.”

‘World-class advertising the goal‘ THE search for excellence in advertising communications should never be sacrificed even in times of great economic challenges, the organisers of the DStv Ngoma Awards have said. In a message to participants, the team at Meet The Challenge said it was delighted to once again arrange and host the Ngoma Awards competition and ceremony, and described this year’s event as being greatly enhanced by sponsorship by MultiChoice Zimbabwe, resulting in branding as the DStv Ngoma Awards. The organisers’ message said: “We have also enjoyed support from Toyota Zimbabwe, Solution Centre and other sponsors, all of which has meant we have been able to roll out a competition and ceremony that increase the visibility of the Ngoma Awards and bring about greater awareness of the efforts being made to recognise effort and achievement towards excellence in advertising communications. “Zimbabwe’s economy remains troublesome and this is evident in what we see happening within the advertising communications industry. But this does not mean people involved should sacrifice the search for excellence and it is hoped the DStv Ngoma Awards will remind everyone involved, however and at whatever level, that world-class advertising communications is the goal and consistent, continuous improvement is the means by which this will be achieved. The organisers added: “We commend everyone who has entered the competition for their willingness to reach out for im-

Members of the Jericho team collect their award from Norman Raisbeck of MultiChoice Zimbabwe provement and to be leaders in the search for excellence. While we are disappointed that a number of agencies and clients have chosen not to be in the competition, we believe the loss is theirs, as they remain outside the drive to build and grow. Let’s hope they see the opportunities that flow from participation and that next year they will come on board. “This year’s event can play a meaningful role in many ways and please be assured the Meet The Challenge team remains committed to ensuring that this is so. “Thank you to everyone for making this event possible: sponsors, participants, judges, organisers and suppliers of goods and services.”

RESTA Lodge has partnered with the DStv Ngoma Awards for several years, as the venue for the awards ceremony and host hospitality venue for the visiting international judge of the competition. Cresta Lodge is situated in Harare’s eastern suburbs and at present work on the final phase of the $7,5 million refurbishment of the hotel is under way, scheduled for completion by mid-year. The refurbishment started in 2013 with phases that included substantial renovation of four bedroom blocks and construction of the Cresta Sango conference centre. “The final phase now under way will see completion of the remaining two bedroom blocks and revamping of the reception, public lounge and swimming pool terrace,” said general manager Kudzayi Ratisai. Cresta Lodge was built and opened in 1992 and has become a popular venue for business and leisure travellers as well as with conference, exhibition and social event organisers. Situated between Greendale residential area and the Mukuvisi Woodland nature park in Harare’s eastern suburbs, it is laid out across extensive and well-forested gardens. Within the lodge is the Cresta Sango Conference Centre, a major banqueting and meetings venue that has established itself as a venue of choice for local and international event organisers, especially in the medium-size market. A stand-alone building adjacent to a block containing a series of small meeting rooms, the attractive and modern conference centre contains a large rectangular main room, which can be sub-divided, as well as a service room immediately adjacent — ideal for food service or supplementary display space — and a unique large platform suitable for social activities before, during or after events in the main room. Sango has hosted a range of events since opening, from conferences and musical shows to weddings, dinner dances, exhibitions and launch events, as well as a host of other banqueting and meeting activities. Among its features are a state-of-the-art public address system, LCD projectors and screens, catering support services, good parking, a pleasant garden around the venue and a strong conference support team.
Sango Conference Centre Come and meet at Zimbabwe's most advanced conference centre - Sango Conference Centre at Cresta Lodge - Harare. The name 'Sango' was inspired by the Shona word for a 'grove of trees'. Conveniently located just 10 minutes from the centre of the capital city, Sango Conference Centre is situated in a quiet and tranquil woodland of magnificent indigenous trees. Sango Conference Centre is a contemporary, state of the art facility offering individuals or corporates a range of leading edge services for any function: Conferences for 50 to 300 delegates, offering the latest electronic technology, broadband for all delegates and video conferencing, cinema style seating for 600, dinner dances and weddings for up to 400 guests, product launches, cocktail parties, and exhibitions for up to 800 people.

The Imagineers “I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.”— Michelangelo In a world fed up to the brim with market analyses, product performance comparisons and sundry accompanying PowerPoint presentations, we often forget the simpler and purer workings of the mind. We quantify everything, leaving little to no room for the imagination. Yet everything mankind has created and is creating once only existed in the realm of the human mind. We have touched the moon, we have examined and understood our distant planetary neighbours and we have peered out past the stars into the furthest recesses of the galaxies. All of this was imagined first, then proven through observation. As our imagination has grown, so has our universe. The same is true with our technology — with imagination first, then creation. Imagine yourself back 33 odd years, to 1982. Personal communicators are as far-fetched as the popular TV series Star Trek. The Personal computer is revolutionising the business environment. The music industry is abuzz over the new benchmark in audio playback technology — the CD. The first movie incorporating computer-generated effects, Tron, is released. This was the birth of the age of technology and we were surely at the pinnacle of human achievement. Fast forward to the present day. CDs are as obsolete as the cassette tape. DVDs are giving way to Blu-Ray, then to pure data. The birth of the cellphone is ancient history and even they have been replaced by smart phones; fully functional communicating computers carrying virtual libraries of music, games and movies in our pockets, always just one click away from the vast information highway we call the Internet, connecting us with friends, family and associates, wherever in the world they may be. The technological age is dead, and the age of information has been underway for years. Where will we be in another 30 years?
Only our imagination can tell us that. “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic,” says Arthur C Clarke Indeed, the rate of technology evolution is accelerating so rapidly, we can expect to experience the equivalent of 20 000 years progress over the next century, in comparison to how far we have advanced previously. When we’re experiencing the legalisation of driverless cars, transparent solar cells, femtophotography and even the introduction of SixthSense technology, this rate of acceleration is not hard to imagine; but what we are actually going to create . . . well, that’s the trick isn’t it? This explosion of innovation is not born from of our ability to build; we have built robots to build for us, or our ability to analyse and predict — we have computer simulations for that as well. We can sound off reams of previous business leader acumen that prove the human power of prediction to be shaky at best. It did not come about due to our ability to quantify and collate, or our ability to market and promote. All of that comes after realising the power of our creativity. Our innovation stems from our ability to invent and our inventions are born straight out of our imagination, created with the limitless power of the human mind. We don’t just invent things, we invent systems and ideas. We even invent things that cannot exist outside the realm of fiction they are presented in, for now at least. We imagine the unimaginable, and through our imagination we have created our world, we have observed our universe, and filled our lives with magic. “Imagination will often carry us to worlds that never were. But without it we go nowhere,” says Carl Sagan. Shift Engage — Proud Imagineers to Swift, Transerv, Lobels Biscuits and Sweets and all our valued clients.
