EDUCATION
Heritage School creating a lasting legacy staff reporter The second most important decision you will make as a parent — apart from deciding to have a child in the first place — is deciding which school to enroll them in. Making the right decision will put them on a path toward lifelong learning, a prestigious college or university education and a successful career. In Zimbabwe where private school education has become revered as the most reasonable way to go it is now critical to choose the right private school for your child. On Thursday I took a tour of the Heritage School situated in Borrowdale Brooke, Harare. The first thing that struck me was the park like surroundings of the school, after being guided to the reception I passed many excellent pieces of children’s artwork that adorned the walls. I was introduced to one of the Directors Mr Tom
Austin, we talked a little about the history of the school before I was given a tour, I was informed that they were only in their seventeenth year. The school really has done well in such a short time. The school architecture is unique and each department has been purpose built for the children within its walls from the Infant department who start at 2 years old to the Senior department situated right at the top of the hill overlooking the entire campus. The school classrooms are also very well equipped in every section of the school. What struck me the most as I was given my tour was how from the two year olds right through to the sixth formers each class entered the children stood up and in unison gave a clear “Good Morning Mr. Austin and your visitor!” (it gradually got faster as the children got
older.) It is so good to see that good manners are still an integral part of the education at this school. The school is offering a coeducational education with a syllabus that takes the best from the British National Curriculum and the best from the Zimbabwean Curriculum this is producing well-rounded pupils/student’s who are ready for seamless incorporation into the big wide world. The school is living up without a doubt to the school motto “Alta Pete” – Aim High. The Heritage School has an excellent reputation and continues to top the lists for all examination boards both local and international and has several high achieving students whether it is in the arts or in the Sciences. The school is also very proud of their sporting teams the Heritage Hornets as they also continue to achieve outstanding results.
Taking a closer look at our Heritage The Heritage School is one of Zimbabwe’s
finest independent schools. It’s a happy community with a warm and welcoming personality. With twenty first century facilities, we offer a staggering breadth and first division academic performance to over twelve hundred pupils. At The Heritage School the work of our teachers and the lives of our pupils are shaped by our Mission Statement and the ideals of our motto, “Alta Pete” (Aim High). Our school is made up of four departments, The Infant Department (2yrs-7yrs), The Junior Department (8yrs-11yrs), The Senior Department (12yrs-16yrs) and The Sixth Form Department (17yrs-18yrs). We also are unique in that our Senior School starts at Year Seven (12yr olds), as we believe this to be the correct age to start your high school education. In line with this our Year sixes take the Cambridge Checkpoint examinations a year earlier than any other school in Zimbabwe, we continue to lead the country in the highest results not only at this point but also in our IGCSE’s.
Our unique School offers education from two year olds all the way to eighteen year olds.
Our curriculum provides an extraordinary array of academic, artistic, sporting and leadership opportunities for our pupils. We pride ourselves on our Science programme which starts at Year two and our juniors starting Chemistry, Biology and Physics at Year Six, we also start our ICT curriculum at Year 1. We continually strive to provide the very best for our children.
While over three quarters of our families hail from Zimbabwe, we also draw students from many other countries, giving our school a very international flavour. Families choose The Heritage School because it is a caring and supportive school that seeks to know and fulfil the potential of every young person. Our graduates attend many of the finest colleges and universities whether in Zimbabwe, UK, Australia, America, Canada, Europe, Asia or South Africa. We are very proud of them.
