NewsDay MONday april 7, 2014

Monash University profile MONASH University was established in Melbourne, Australia, in 1958. In little more than 50 years. We have become Australia’s largest university, earning an enviable national and international reputation for research and teaching excellence. We are the youngest member of the Group of Eight, the coalition of Australia’s most prestigious researchintensive universities. We are named after Sir John Monash, a famous Australian who contributed to almost every level of national life. Sir John had a simple philosophy: “. . . equip yourself for life, not merely for your own benefit, but for the benefit of the whole community.” This guides everything we do: our approach to education, our research ambitions, our people, our communities and our global intiatives. Global university Indeed, the concept of transformation

lies at the heart of the Monash philosophy. For students, researchers and staff, that philosophy is not only about transforming their own lives, but also making a difference to the lives of others. With more than 280 000 graduates across the world, campuses in Australia, Malaysia and South Africa, an education and research centre in Italy, a jointresearch academy in India, the Southeast University-Monash University Joint Graduate School in Suzhou, China, and a truly unique alliance with the University of Warwick in the UK, Monash is a global university with the ambition and ability to address momentous global challenges. Partnerships - local and global Monash has a strong track record of long-term, successful relationships with industry, government and the community. Its partnerships and engagement programmes range from close links with im-

mediate neighbours to groundbreaking collaborations with organisations across the world. In 2012, Monash established a landmark alliance with Warwick University in the UK, aiming to redefine the very concept of a global university. A priority of the alliance is to deliver a seamless international experience for students and prepare them for life in a globally integrated labour market. The partnership will develop a range of jointly delivered degrees, with students undertaking study at both universities. Also in 2012, Monash became the first Australian university to receive a licence to operate in China, one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing economies. Our international collaboration at Suzhou with the Southeast University (SEU) – one of China’s key national universities – will produce postgraduates and re-

searchers with ideas to change people’s lives in the region and the world for the better. Located in north-eastern Mumbai, the IITB Monash Research Academy is a partnership between the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB) and Monash University. The institution is focused on providing innovative research outcomes for industries in India and Australia. These include petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, automotive, infrastructure, biotechnology, life sciences, IT and financial markets. Significant research breakthroughs Monash researchers have been leaders in areas like IVF and reproduction, road safety, malaria and influenza treatment, and stem cells for many years, and in some cases, decades. In the last 20 years alone, Monash researchers have: l designed and synthesised a drug which would be released as the breakthrough anti-flu pharmaceutical product, Relenza in 1999. l developed a single, oral-dose cure for malaria, effective in laboratory conditions (2004). Today, the new drug is in the second phase of clinical trials on humans and promises to be cheap, easy to manufacture and quick to administer. l worked out how to deactivate the digestive enzyme in our bodies used by the malarial parasite to sustain itself (2009). This discovery is also being used to develop drugs to treat malaria. l discovered a potential new treatment for breast cancer (2010). Over four years, their research team analysed more than 400 human breast cancer tissue samples. They found that more aggressive breast tumours were less likely to be accompanied by the presence of a protein known as INPP4B. They then created an antibody to INPP4B, which easily detects the protein in biopsies. l demonstrated that nerve stem cells could be derived from human embryonic stem cells in the laboratory (2000). They later showed that, outside of the laboratory, human embryonic stem cells could develop into nerve cells, raising the revolutionary prospect of treating a range of diseases from Parkinson's through to Alzheimer's and diabetes. Reputation Monash consistently rates highly in three of the world’s most prestigious university ranking indices: University rankings Monash is ranked: l in the top 1% of world universities – 91st in the world – according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings (2013-2014) l the 69th university in the world according to the 2013/2014 QS World University Rankings l in the top 150 world universities according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities compiled by Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Discipline rankings Monash is ranked: l the best university in Australia for Engineering, Technology and Computer Science (ranked equal first) (Academic Ranking of World Universities, 2013) l 38th in the world for Clinical, Pre-Clinical and Health (Times Higher Education, 2013 – 2014) l 45th in the world for Arts and Humanities (Times Higher Education, 2013 – 2014) l 49th in the world for Engineering and Technology (Times Higher Education, 2013 – 2014). Subject rankings The Academic Ranking of World Universities (2014) rates us: l the best university in Australia for Chemistry l one of the two best universities in Australia for Computer Science (equal first) l in the top 50 for 18 subjects.
