GOLF TIPS

Accurate pitching reduces your golf handicap. Turning three strokes into two by pitching close to the pin cuts strokes from your scores. Cut enough strokes and you’ll lower your handicap significantly. Learning to pitch accurately from the fairway is crucial to improving your game. Pitching accurately from the fairway requires good distance control. That’s not easy to achieve. The tendency is for your swing to be either too long, in which case the club head decelerates through impact, or too short, in which case the club head is jerked through impact. Either way will cost you strokes which will inflate your golf scores and your golf handicap. Learning to pitch accurately from the fairway is a two-stage process. One stage involves building better technique. You can work on technique in golf lessons and on the practice range whenever you go. The second stage involves learning how to judge distances. While you can’t learn to judge distances simply from taking golf lessons or reading golf tips, they can facilitate the learning process. Here are 6 keys to building better technique: 1. Make changes at address 2.Open the stance 3.Aim clubface at target 4.Make a shorter backswing 5.Clear the left side 6.Release the club head Two subtle changes at address help with technique. Since you need to strike the ball with a crisp, descending blow, (1) position the ball at your stance’s midpoint and (2) make sure that the club’s shaft and your left arm (for right-handers) are in a straight line, ensuring ball-then-turf contact. Also, open your stance a little at address. It enables you to clear the left side through impact. Despite the open stance, aim the clubface directly at the target, just as if your feet were parallel.

Opening your stance shortens your backswing, since it curbs movement of the lower body. Gripping down on the club also shortens your backswing, while providing increased club control. The closer your hands are to the ball, the better control you have. Nevertheless, you still need to transfer your weight correctly, despite the shorter swing, With the open stance and the left side clear, your hands have room to strike the ball squarely. Release the club head freely through impact and then move smoothly into your follow-through. Use these suggestions to help build better technique. Don’t forget to vary the speed of your body turn. If you have a 20-yard shot, think in terms of turning your body 20 miles per hour. If you have a 30-yard shot, think in terms of turning your body 30 miles per hour. The longer the shot, the faster you turn your body. Try this method to help improve your distance control. Use these six keys to help with pitching from the fairway next time and you’ll be sure to start dropping shots fast. AM By Scott Durnell

AN APPLE A DAY

ples, in particular, act as a liver and gall bladder cleanser and may aid in softening gallstones. As your child begins the new school year, add a delicious and nutritious apple to their daily intake. It’s true what they say about an apple a day. Here are a few other helpful hints to prepare your child for healthy eating habits for school:

5 Tips to Better Student Nutrition: 1. Don’t make the mistake of offering a wide variety of packaged snack items; rather offer a few healthy snacks like fresh fruits, trail mix, or cheese. 2. Make sure the school offers healthy options for lunch and snack; otherwise pack your child’s lunch. 3. Bring your kids to the grocery store to help choose their favorite foods and show them why some of their choices are healthier than others. folic acid. Apples are great for snacking, but they are also versatile in the kitchen. We may be most familiar with apple-rich baked goods and desserts, but it would be a shame to stop there—apples are also great in savory dishes. Roasting gives them a more intense sweetness that marries well with roast pork. Sautéed slices become a meltingly tender accompaniment for turkey cutlets and, when grated, apples offer a sweet-tart note to our favorite salad.

4. Limit their intake of high-sugar drinks including fruit-flavored drinks such as punch, soda and even 100% fruit juice.

Apples have been cited for reducing the risk of heart disease. They also have proved in lab tests to be beneficial in stopping the growth of cancer cells. Most of the apples healing power resides in the apples skin, a compound called quercetin, a powerful antioxidant that can prevent oxygen molecules from damaging individual cells. Over time this antioxidant helps to prevent changes in cells that can lead to cancer.

Not Fiona, not New York, and not an ipod. Just a delicious snack that can help you and your children stay healthy…it’s just an apple. Getting a child to eat healthy food can be a monumental challenge for any parent. However, studies show that all of the haggling, arguing, and hassle is actually worth the effort as a healthy diet leads to enhanced academic performance in school. In fact, malnourished children often struggle in school because they are more likely to miss school, score lower on standardized tests, and repeat grades. Worse, bad eating habits can lead to serious health problems, such as diabetes, that not only affect academic performance but a student’s ability to participate in extracurricular activities. Sweet, tangy, juicy and flavorful, the apple is nature’s perfect treat, especially when you’re lucky enough to pick them straight off the tree in the fall. You can feel good about eating them too. Apples are low in calories and are a good source of soluble fiber, potassium and ALPHARETTA MAGAZINE

According to Marie Ellen Camire, Ph.D. an associate professor and Chair of the Department of food science and human nutrition at the University of Maine in Orono, “Some varieties of apples, like Granny Smith are bred to be low in certain protective compounds that make apples brown when you peel them.” The most health benefits are gained by eating these varieties. In the U.S. alone there are about 2500 kinds of apples. Whether for cooking or baking or just a grab and go snack, they are great protection against disease. Today, the medical profession promotes the apple’s rich quantity of pectin as an aid in reducing high cholesterol and blood sugar, as well as benefiting people with coronary artery disease and diabetes. 5. Let your kids help prepare a healthy meal; they’ll have a great time learning to eat nutritiously. While the saying goes that doctors prescribe apples for good health, dentists also promote eating apples as a method of preventing tooth decay. For one thing, apples have nutrients known as tannins that can protect against plaque and gum disease. Also, the act of eating a water-rich, solid fruit can help clean away bacteria from teeth. This is because chewing an apple helps stimulate the production of saliva. Saliva kills bacteria and helps prevent tooth decay. Ultimately, apples are one of the best foods a person can eat. They are sweet, crunchy, delicious, and, of course, extremely healthy. Their nutrition facts are quite impressive, and apples should be a part of any healthy diet. AM by Dr. Diana Metes

Will Your Child’s Backpack Make the Grade?

Dental Do’s & Don’ts

As our children begin a new school year, it’s important for us to prepare them for everything that they may need. This includes making sure that they have all of the health related issues taken care of before they become too preoccupied with schoolwork. Alpharetta Magazine sat down with a few representatives of the Alpharetta Children’s Dentistry to further our education on proper dental care. From infants to toddlers, to young students, here are a few do’s and don’ts when it comes to young teeth. With a new school year underway, Backpack Safety America/ International™ is reminding parents and school administrators that wearing backpacks improperly, or too heavy, can put children at risk for painful back and neck problems and structural damage that can lead to long term health problems.

“Before entering a public school in Georgia, children are required to have a dental exam (3300 form) prior to registration. We are unique in that our office provides this exam free of charge,” explains Edie Warren of Alpharetta Children’s Dentistry.

There is growing evidence that backpacks may be a threat to spinal development. Some 7,500 emergency room visits in 2007 were related to backpack injuries, according to U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. These numbers do not include students who went to doctors of chiropractic or other healthcare providers. Another recent study of backpack carrying Pre-K through 9th graders showed that unhealthy changes in posture are magnified if the backpack weighs more than 10-15 percent of the student’s body weight.

If you’re thinking it may be too early for your child to see a pediatric dentist...you may want to think again. “If your child goes to bed with a bottle, we would like to see your child,” says Michelle Gardner of ACD. “Otherwise, 2 years old is a good time to see him or her.”

Thousands of healthcare professionals and educators throughout North America and around the world are helping school-age children use their backpacks safely and properly. The following safety tips from Backpack Safety AmericaTM are recommended: * Choose a backpack designed for safety and comfort, with padding in the back and shoulders. Look for pockets and compartments inside the backpack to more evenly distribute the weight across the back. * Pack right: The maximum weight of the loaded backpack should not exceed 15 percent of your body weight. If the backpack forces the wearer to lean forward to carry, it’s overloaded. * Wear it right: Use both shoulder straps at all times to avoid unnecessary pressure to one side of your body. For more information on backpack safety and to further your understanding of good spinal hygiene for your child, contact Hovey Chiropractic Clinic, 770-587-2663 at 2500 Old Alabama Road, Suite 19, Roswell, GA 30076. www.hoveychiropractic.com

Make sure your child is not going to bed with the wrong liquid. Whether you have a toddler, preschooler, or a young child, make sure they are not going to bed with a drink that can do damage to their teeth. “When children go to bed after enjoying a glass of milk, juice, or soda, the sugar remains on their teeth for the duration of the night. That’s 8-12 hours of sugar slowly but surely decaying their teeth,” explains founder of Alpharetta’s Children Dentistry George MacMaster DMD. Try water instead as a bedtime drink. Drinking fluoridated water from birth until age 10 will reduce decay on average by 50-60% for life. As adults, going to the dentist is usually not high on our to do list, so think of how apprehensive a child may be. At Alpharetta’s Children Dentistry, they’ve kept that in mind. Dr. MacMaster and his colleagues share in the belief that creating a positive experience and making a child feel comfortable is the ultimate goal of their practice. “Teeth are not more important than self-esteem. Our care and support for the patient are why we’ve been around for over 20 years.” AM By Scott Durnell, Judith Epstein, & Dio C. THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT

indulge their love of standing water. Your butterfly garden will give you much deserved peace and tranquility while you observe the colorful species interact and fly around you. By planting the appropriate plants and having a welcoming atmosphere, you’ll have a picturesque tropical butterfly garden in no time. We relate butterflies to the Chaos theory. A theory in applied mathematics that asserts that even a butterfly flapping its wings in Texas can cause a chain of events leading to a typhoon in Japan a month later. An example of how cause and effect is so delicately balanced and interdependent that if you change one thing, you change everything. We relate butterflies buttercups or milkweed is sure to be visited by dozens of butterflies.

Butterfly gardens need to provide both sun and shade

Like all insects, butterflies are cold-blooded creatures. They thrive on warm sun, and will bask on flat rocks or perch for long minutes on the branches of a high bush in the sunlight. At the same time, they need shade and shelter when the sun is too hot, or on cool, cloudy days. An area that gets bright sun for at least 4-6 hours per day is the best spot for a butterfly garden, but don’t forget to include landscaping details that offer shade. I grew up in the city surrounded by asphalt and concrete sidewalks, brick buildings and vacant lots – but there was no lack of nature or butterflies in my life. Amid the sprawl of a decaying urban landscape, the overgrown vacant lots choked with ‘weeds’ attracted so many butterflies that they would perch on my shoulders and hands if I was still enough. These ‘accidental’ butterfly gardens provided all the ingredients that butterflies require to congregate en masse. These same ingredients can turn your garden into a fairy wonderland of fluttering wings and color. Over the past thirty years, butterfly gardening has become popular, both to attract the beautiful travelers and to help preserve species of butterflies that were dwindling due to human encroachment into their natural habitats. If you’re planning a butterfly garden, it’s important to keep in mind that there is no one recipe for a successful garden. Butterfly species that are indigenous to different areas are attracted to different types of plants. In order to foster butterflies, you’ll need to know the butterfly species that are found in your area, and provide them with plants that are favored food sources for adult butterflies as well as those plants that they prefer for laying their eggs and nourishing larva.

Here in the south, the typical butterflies that you will find are the: Swallowtails (black, spicebush, tiger and pipevine), Buckeye, Pearl Crescent, Monarch, Cloudless Sulphur, Gulf Fritillary, Red-spotted purple. The plants needed for these species are: Fennel, carrot, spicebush, dill, parsley, pipevine (swallowtails), wild cherry, poplar, sassafras, passiflora, wild senna, asters, and milkweed.

Butterflies love puddles

Add a sunken birdbath to your garden, or provide a cluster of rocks that traps rain water to give butterflies a cool spot where they can

The best way to create your butterfly garden is to follow these simple rules:

Plant flowers in clumps and drift. Butterflies will flock to large expanses of flowers in similar colors that bloom at the same time rather than to single plants with just a few blooms. A carpet of violets, a sea of

Be glad of life because it gives you the chance to love and to work and to play and to look up at the stars. - Henry Van Dyke A few weeks ago, I went to Maine for the very first time. It was the first time in three years that I actually decided to close the restaurant doors for a few days. I was so excited because everyone said Maine is a wonderful place to visit. My boyfriend and I were invited to his sister’s house near the ocean in Northport. Everything is so beautiful in Maine. Every morning we woke up breathing the fresh air, looking into the big calm ocean and watching the seagulls catch fish. We enjoyed freshly brewed morning coffee and delicious homemade pancakes or baked blueberry Kuchen, which is a German blueberry pie.

Here are a few rules to living that I’ve recently rediscovered: 1. Life is about balancing everything; when it is time to work, you work, when it is time to play, you play. 2. Your job will not take care of you when you are sick. Your family will. 3. The most important thing in life is your relationship with people and loved ones. 4. Enjoy the moment. Let it happen and have fun. 5. Always laugh and then laugh some more. 6. Always choose life, and make the most of it. For several years, I’ve been so focused on my work that I haven’t enjoyed enough of where I am. I’ve been so focused on the future that I haven’t had a chance to enjoy the present. I FORGOT TO LIVE! I think we need to return to living our life. It is the reason why we are here. Find some time to smell the flowers, see stars in the sky, hug your kids or loved one, or have a good meal with friends and family. During these difficult economic times, you never know who could really use some fellowship. The bottom line is, it makes no difference how many goals you have reached if there was no pleasure in life during the journey. I am going to spend more time enjoying my life and enjoying those around me. Nahm Thongyoung

At night, we cooked dinner together and had glasses of good wine with nice conversation and told fun stories during our meal. I felt so happy and relaxed there that it reminded me of what life is really about. Coming back from vacation, I decided to rearrange my priorities.

There are now so many more ways to track down an old high school friend or a previous co-worker with the permeation of Facebook. Many social network sites allow users to search by name, high school or company, facilitating countless unexpected reunions. Once a social platform for college students, the 40 million active membership site Facebook is the latest buzzword in social media marketing. Facebook has allowed many of us to form a bridge between ourselves and friends or relatives that we have not been in contact with for years. Since the emergence of MySpace & Facebook, people have become determined to share themselves, their lives, their hopes, and their interests to a wider, broader audience. Perhaps this desire stems from the distancing of families across states, countries and continents. Perhaps it is caused by the curiosity to see how those you went to school with are doing today. Whatever the cause, the result has been the widespread popularity of online social networks. Facebook. Many users sign-up on Facebook to sync-up with old friends and create new ALPHARETTA MAGAZINE

You can upload personal videos using your browser or mobile phone and directly record videos to Facebook. Social interaction is a part of creating a healthy and happy existence. Though thought to be not quite as personal, social networks still play a role in this important interaction. They make staying in touch and updating those important to us in our lives easier and faster to do. it as the land of opportunity. I knew that if I worked hard, this country provided at least an opportunity for people that were focused on making it.” Joseph’s book titled “Thanks To America” can be found at Amazon.com or via www.josephandfriends.com. This book is an honest look of the trials that people have when trying to make it in a foreign land, but also the joys of seeing how far perseverance can take you.

Today Joseph & Friends is considered one of the top ten salons in Atlanta, and has grown into 4 North Atlanta locations: Holcomb Woods Village 1570 Holcomb Bridge #205 in Roswell John’s Creek Village 11720 Medlock Bridge Road #570 in Duluth Joseph Golshani, CEO of Joseph & Friends Salon & Day Spa, traveled to the U.S. in 1977 to pursue an education in mechanical engineering. With the monetary demands of higher education, Joseph resorted to cutting his own hair as a means to save money. Shortly thereafter, his friends realized his cutting ability and began making requests that he cut their own. This was the beginning of his highly successful and well known career in the hair industry. After attending cosmetology school, Joseph’s gift as a stylist was confirmed when he won a student hair-cutting competition. As a result, he was invited to work for one of the judge’s salons. It was there that Joseph earned a loyal clientele.

Vickery Village 5735 Clarion Street in Cumming

Another appeal was Aveda’s dedication to ongoing education for its service-providers, guaranteeing the best quality of service for its clients. Joseph applied these values to his own business when he reopened Joseph & Friends as an Aveda Lifestyle Salon & Day Spa. Their spa is full service. Skin care, nail care, massage, and complete spa packages including the Odyssey which begins its pampering with a stress relieving massage, followed by a deep cleansing facial, spa manicure and pedicure, make-up application, shampoo and blow dry. A light lunch is also included in this treatment.

In an effort to create a high-quality salon in the Atlanta area, Joseph ventured into opening his own salon. With the help of his wife Behnaz, and his family, the first Joseph & Friends salon was established in 1989. “I was committed to treating customers and staff the right way and making sure that everyone had a good experience when they entered my salon,” Joseph explains. Joseph’s commitment to the Aveda standard took seed when he met Horst Rechelbacher, Aveda’s founder. SHOE CHAT What can a fashion shoe do for you?

We wear them, enjoy them and look forward to the latest fashion. Shoes are one of a girl’s best friends… or are they? While fashion may dictate the shoe to wear with that hot new dress or pant suit you just got, it can also be the cause of major foot problems in the future. Here are just a few fashion culprits that may lead to painful conditions and permanent deformities of the feet. Shoes with a pointing toe box force our toes to go to an unnatural position imitating the shape of the shoe. Unfortunately, after wearing shoes like that on a regular basis your foot can start looking like one, with a bunion coming out and pushing your big toe onto your other toes. Not only is this condition painful and significantly limits your footwear choices, but it is also unflattering to the point that many women end up saying goodbye to showing off their toes. Too narrow shoes squish your feet. Initially you may feel numbness but with time it can turn into Morton’s Neuroma, a very painful condition which is a result of pinching nerves in the forefoot area. To help you realize what I am talking about you can do a little experiment; pinch yourself on a forearm; can you feel it? Now, imagine similar but ongoing pain in your foot. High heels will make your legs look longer but they will also contribute to “crushing” your metatarsal bones due to excessive pressure. That can cause Metatarsalgia, a pain in the ball of the foot. To be more descriptive, it would be very similar to the pain you feel every time you press on a fresh bruise.

Magda Denning helps people assess their footwear and find comfortable and stylish solutions to their shoe dilemmas. You can find her at the Shoppes at Brannon Crossing on Peachtree Parkway in Cumming or contact her at (678) 513-0450 or bluemtnshoes@comcast.net.

None of these conditions sound like fun and studies show that nearly nine out of ten operations done to correct foot problems are for women who wore high heeled and narrow toed shoes on a repetitive basis. If you think it is not going to happen to you ask anyone who has dealt with any of the conditions; they didn’t think that either but will certainly tell you that putting fashion before comfort and good shoes was not worth the aggravation. To sum it all up, when looking for fashionable shoes make sure they are right for your feet and wear them occasionally only, otherwise you will deprive yourself of wearing them at all.

FASHION FORWARD twists. The starlet bun can be worn in a variety of different ways. A twist in the center to the top of the head, low in a smooth knotted style, or with a fringe at the front and knotted in a messy beehive at the back.

Vintage Hollywood Glamour

The old, vintage glamorous Hollywood look is well-characterized by the smooth and voluptuous waves. The side parts are kept really deep. You need some beautiful accessories to top it off nicely. The vintage accessories are kept on the one side of the hair and also at the backside. The fact that fashion recycles itself is clearly evident in today’s hair trends. We’ve taken cues from the 80’s, waves from the 70’s, and the glamour from the 60’s. This season’s hair is paying tribute to the classics. AM By Kris Muirfee Do you love to crown your personal fashion statement? Of course you do. And why not? The life cycle of any fashion trend is close to just a few years, however if it had a strong presence during that time, you will see it again. From the 80’s bangs to the Mohawk, in fashion, everything comes back around full circle. The looks for summer are classic! Think sultry starlets of the fifties with lustrous waves, buns in all shapes and sizes and hair laden with baubles and bling. Having scoured the runways and fashion shows I’ve put together my top looks that work for both short and long hair and how to achieve them in less than fifteen minutes flat.

Faux-Hawks and Mohawks

It’s a hot-trend for both girls and boys. It has an enormously versatile look. It is also promising to imitate on just about any hair length. If you have short hair, you can use gel or wax to simply direct your hair forward and then upwards in center.

SAVING FACE

The second myth about acne’s cause is that stress brings it on. Ordinary stress is not related to acne at all, although if you suffer from stress that becomes severe enough to warrant the care of a physician and prescribed medications, those medications might produce acne. If you’re taking drugs for depression or other stress related symptoms and you have an acne breakout you should see your doctor. The third myth about acne is that your poor diet choices cause it. Your mother probably told you to avoid chocolate or fried foods or even pizza and it would help your acne. Nothing could be further from the truth. Food intake doesn’t affect acne. A balance diet is a good choice for your overall health, of course, but it just doesn’t affect acne.

All of the above products if used in conjunction with acne dietary supplements like acuzine produce good results. Acuzine consists of anti-oxidants, vitamins E & C, hydrolyzed collagen, ALA, DMAE, Aloe vera, Bioperine etc. The presence of these ingredients helps in early recovery of the skin and provides vital vitamins and enzymes for rebuilding the skin thus reducing the frequency of acne occurrences. AM By Dr. Piers Voalkend

Acne is a common skin disease affecting almost everyone. It is caused due to the blockage of skin follicle duct of sebum glands. This blockage traps sebum and causes inflammation of the skin. A bacterium P.Acnes readily infects this inflammation causing acne. There are many common acne products available in the market for acne treatment.

With the advancement of acne treatments and acne products available today, acne no longer holds a crippling impact on sufferers. Acne commonly occurs during the adolescence period and is often caused by excessive secretion of oil from the glands. The typical acne lesions that appear on the face and body are called comedones, papules, pustules or pimples. There are several myths about acne that I’d like to dispel. The first is that your poor hygiene causes acne. People who believe this myth ended up scrubbing their faces and other skin parts harshly and too often, which often makes the acne condition even worse. While you don’t want to leave dead skin, dirt or excess oil on your skin, you don’t want to vigorously scrub it away either, or you’ll exacerbate the acne problem. What you should do instead is wash your face gently twice each day and then pat it dry. You may also want to use an acne treatment - over the counter or prescribed. ALPHARETTA MAGAZINE

Acne cleansers are facial care products designed to remove dead cells, open up pores, and remove oil, dust, dirt and other harmful pollutants. Generally acne cleansers are used twice daily and in conjunction with skin toners and moisturizers. Acne cleansers work better than ordinary soap because soap has a very high pH value which can change the pH balance of the skin. The method to use acne cleansers is to use luke warm water to clean the face then apply acne cleanser all over the face and throat. Acne lotions are oil and water emulsions designed to be applied on unbroken skin. Acne lotions are usually medicated with acne medicines like antibacterials, skin exfoliants, retinoids or antibiotics. Acne lotions have the advantage over creams or ointments as they can be applied thinly over a large area and hence can be economical.

MOVE IT! We are so smart. We invent incredibly sophisticated machines and technology to ease our need for physical exertion or often times eliminate activity all together. While this seems like a godsend, at the end of the day a crisis looms. On one hand it’s nice not to have to exert ourselves, but reduced exertion leaves us dreary, weak, and ultimately sick. There is nothing magical about human physiology that allows us to be sedentary and unfit without severe health consequences. The basic elements of movement are 1) cardiovascular - such as walking, biking, swimming, etc. 2) flexibility - such as yoga, stretching, and 3) strength building from weight lifting and resistance band exercises. We hold monthly workshops to teach our community about these health basics. Start slow if you’re new to exercise. Take a 20-30 minute walk three times a week. Hire a coach-trainer if you are intimidated or simply attend a free workshop to get motivated. Remember “exercise is free”. So let’s Move It! Move Well. Dr. James Hovey

Time for Wine

Perhaps you have selected an occasion to open that special bottle of wine that you have been saving, or maybe you are hosting a dinner party. Wine service has a few basic elements of importance, including temperature of the wine, opening the bottle, allowing the wine to breathe, choosing glasses, and pouring. The temperature of the wine when it is served is imperative. White wines should be served chilled, which can be accomplished in your refrigerator. Place your whites in the refrigerator one to two hours before serving, allowing their temperatures to drop to about fifty-five degrees Fahrenheit. White wines are served chilled due to their high acidity levels, which are moderated when cooled. Be sure not to store your wine in the fridge, however, as this can destroy the flavor, making it dull and flat. If you do not have two hours to spare, placing the wine in a bucket of ice water will effectively chill the wine. Red wines can be chilled via refrigerator for thirty to forty-five minutes, until they have reached about sixty-two degrees Fahrenheit. This is considered “room temperature.” Reds are served at a slightly cooler temperature because it slows down the evaporation process, which will improve the bouquet and flavor of the wine. If you serve red wine at an overly-chilled temperature it will take on a bitter taste.

You may choose to allow your reds to breathe directly after opening, especially for that serious bottle. Pour the wine into a decanter and allow the wine to open up for a couple of hours. After selecting your wine and reserving it for this moment, the most appealing stem-wear is paramount. The most common of glasses is the tulip shape due to its wide bowl and narrower top with long stem. This makes an ideal glass for swirling the wine, as it gets a lot of movement with little fear of spillage. The narrow top also traps the bouquet, making it more able to deliver the fragrance. A long stem is advisable for holding the glass during enjoyment, as this prevents any change in temperature from constant holding. Using this type of glass is usually acceptable for both reds and whites, especially if you do not want to have to clean more than one round of glasses. There are a new variety of wine glasses available; those without stems. They sit up on the bowl of the glass. They allow the wine to breathe wonderfully during consumption and display remarkable aroma. The only drawback I’ve experienced thus far is that they can cause the drinker to leave fingerprints on the glass as well as change the temperature by constant handling, but the choice is yours. Be sure to fill your glasses about halfway, especially since most of the glasses we use are considerably large. This will give the wine a chance to breathe upon pouring, as well as allow for swirling. Be sure to serve light bodied before full bodied wines, and young before olds. This keeps the palate fresher longer. Bon Appétit...enjoy your vino. AM By James Simmer

All couples dream of the perfect wedding and honeymoon and tying the knot on a cruise ship offers the best of both worlds. It’s a wedding and honeymoon wrapped into one package which takes all the worry out of planning. Once you decide to do a cruise wedding, your personal wedding coordinator walks you through the numerous wedding choices the cruise line provides for your special day. Thousands of couples have taken the plunge at sea, often citing the ease and convenience afforded. Cruise line wedding coordinators relieve the anxiety of details such as arranging for a marriage license or finding a clergyman - details that can seem like a tough task to do in unfamiliar surroundings. Services differ between cruise lines, so it’s important to investigate all options before booking a cruise wedding or renewal of vows celebration. Packages can include not only the ceremony but also flowers, photographs, a disc jockey, video recording, champagne, wedding cake and music. The majority of newer ships have dedicated wedding chapels. Only two cruise lines, Princess Cruises and Celebrity Cruises, offer the ship’s captain as an option to officiate a wedding ceremony. Princess Cruises also offers a live “Wedding Cam” to couples exchanging vows in their onboard chapels; the cameras stream video over the web to family and friends who cannot attend the ceremony.

Every couple wants an exceptional wedding experience. Some may opt for a solemn church wedding; others may seek a colorful garden wedding, while others may decide on setting their vows in extreme and extraordinary ways. Whatever you like your wedding event to be, nothing compares to the overwhelming delight that cruise ship weddings offer.

In addition, what sets this type of wedding scene apart from the tradtional ones celebrated inside cathedrals, is that you can opt to have your marriage ceremony done while you are on board the ship, or you can stopover at a beautiful spot during a shore excursion and exchange your vows on the shore.

With its growing popularity for the past decades, many couples choose this special experience to tie their knots because of its grandiose arrangement, and its equitable outlays. That is why many wedding planners in cooperation with cruise ship agencies are offering such a package at a reasonable price. Even if the meaning of having a reasonable price is still thousands of dollars, the package being presented for this type of marriage celebration is complete and can be enjoyed both by the couples and their guests. Your wedding will only be for one day, but memories that you and your partner, as well as all of your guests have carved onboard, will be considered everlasting. The reason why there are a lot of couples choosing to get married aboard a sea vessel is the fact that the uniqueness of the destination and of the experience getting to wed while riding the waves is a big advantage for such a memorable celebration. It’s simply a matchless way to celebrate love! ALPHARETTA MAGAZINE

The latter option is usually what every bride calls a “dream wedding” set on white sands and unruffled waves. Moreover, the majestic open space that nature offers is also quite impressive for wedding receptions compared to having the party set in a hotel atmosphere. With a little planning, any cruise ship can be turned into a special event whether it is romantic in nature like a honeymoon, renewal of vows, anniversary, or engagement.

Most cruise lines offer amenities like special cakes, a bottle of chilled champagne or wine at your table when you arrive, festive decorations, flowers, and special keepsake photographs. Celebrating life milestones onboard a cruise ship is a fun and thrilling way to commemorate happy occasions. Add the convenience of having everything all in one place and professionals who take care of your every need - it’s no wonder that a cruise ship is the perfect venue for all celebrations. with a computer screen. Flat screens often leave a lot of empty space on the desk - so just get up in front – and remind your human of how wonderful you are.

Closed Doors

Under no circumstances are you to accept closed doors that separate you from your human. At all times you have a right to know what your human is doing. If by accident you have been placed on the non-human side of the door you need to make your human aware of this ASAP so he/she can remedy the situation immediately. Loud meows and scratching on the door should be sufficient to get your humans attention.

House guests

House guests require special attention and handling. The following procedures should be followed: House guests that either do not like us or are allergic to us should receive a very warm welcome. Try jumping into their lap or coming as close to their face as possible.

Catty Corner

Useful advice for cats: How to care for your humans For us cats there are several advantages to having a human as a pet. However, remember you are taking on a big responsibility because humans are very demanding and need daily care and attention.

If you adopt a human, keep in mind that they do not deal well with being left alone - they will get into all sorts of mischief. For example, if you are gone for just two or three days you run the risk of seeing posters put up all over the neighborhood of you. Often with an embarrassing text that reveals all sorts of personal details - and usually accompanied by an unflattering photo of you - with morning fur and crumpled whiskers. Exactly the kind of thing that attracts ridicule from all the neighbor cats. So please consider carefully if you are ready for a life with humans. Here are some tips:

Establishing Dominance

The litter box provides a great opportunity for establishing dominance. Try to remain present while your human is cleaning your waste. By being present during the cleaning, you are showing your human that you are in charge of the household. Obviously, you don’t ALPHARETTA MAGAZINE

Avoid children. Although they seem nice at first, they are only a few moments away from pulling your tail and they persist on chasing you around the house. Unless you have the energy, children should be avoided.

Bad Weather

clean his waste, so it’s clear who’s in charge while you watch him clean yours.

Exercise your human

All humans need an appropriate amount of daily exercise however be ready for resistance. The best approach is to lure the human away from the couch by acting like you need to go outside. As soon as the human comes close to the door, move away from it and act like you never needed to go. Repeat this method several times until your human is absolutely exhausted. They will usually say “do you need to go out or not?” That’s your cue that they will only participate a few more times.

from wasting their time. Humans love to spend their time on things with no relevance for cats. For example, watching TV: make sure that you always position yourself between the TV and your human. On the coffee table for example. You can also rest directly on the TV and let your tail or paws swing down in front of the screen. This method is most effective with small screens where you can cover a large percentage of the screen. It is a bit trickier with a flat screen and only recommended for the agile kitty. A variation can be used

Even in bad weather, it can be necessary to go outside. The rain and wet ground will result in an unpleasant layer of dirt and mud on your paws. However, this can easily be dried off on certain appropriate indoor materials. Find a light carpet, a bed comforter or the newest piece of furniture and walk over it a couple of times. When your paw tracks are almost invisible, your paws are clean and you are ready to go outside again.

Delicate furniture fabrics, precious carpets, new shoes and ankles are all good materials onto which you can practice your clawing. How else are you going to protect your human if you don’t practice a few attack exercises and clawing techniques? These types of materials make a good foe since you can see the result of your handiwork for several days.

During the training of your human it may be necessary to apply discipline. Instead of scratching your human, try first to make him or her understand what he or she has done wrong. For example, if your human attempts to pet you while you’re eating, (as ridiculous as it sounds it does happen), simply showing your teeth and arching your back is sufficient. They will not make that same mistake again. Trust me. And most importantly, be patient! It does take time to train your human properly.
