G olf T ip As we carry our new golf bags onto the course this year I challenge my fellow golfers to familiarize yourself with your new best friend. The nine-iron. We spent all of last year perfecting our 300 yard drive and our putting game is almost as good as that one guy who used to play golf and win all those tournaments. This year, I challenge you to become an Ironman and learn to appreciate the one piece of equipment that will help you get from the tee to the cup. Most new and even some experienced golfers are not sure when to use their nine-iron. The nine-iron is not to be used if the ball is farther than 130 yards from the green. If the ball is any further back, choose a seven-iron or eight-iron. The nine-iron is a good short-range utility club that provides good elevation from the fairway and back to the green. It can also be used to chip with and also works well as a sand wedge in the event a sand wedge is needed but not available. For chipping within 100 yards, the nine-iron is one of the better clubs to choose. The golfer can get more elevation with the ball, yet cut the distance, if the ball is placed in back of his or her stance. Keeping your feet closer together makes it difficult to strike the ball as hard which will result in the ball not flying the green. Additionally, the nine-iron is a good club if the golfer is playing a short par 3 hole. In fact, using anything more than a nine-iron will be
too much. Stance is important here as well since the golfer does not want to drive the ball too far. A closed stance in this case will help you limit the distance the ball travels, and placing the ball further back in your stance will cause the ball to get loft faster. If struck correctly, the ball should fly perfectly onto the green, hopefully rolling into the cup or at least close to it. Use these tips to strengthen your iron game which will improve your overall golf game considerably. AM by Scott Durnell & Jason Burkner

Happy Valentine’s Day Make it Romantic with Gifts from the Heart
on a Sunday this year, a romantic bath can be a great way to relax your mate before a long week of work ahead. Fill the bathtub with very warm water. Take rose petals and scatter them in and around the bathtub. Light red candles around the bathtub and basin. Take more rose petals and make a path to the bathroom to lead your special someone to a romantic bath. For something different, add dry powdered milk and Epsom salts to the bath instead of bubble bath. After a romantic bubble or milk bath, or simply on its own, a sensual massage will show any sweetheart your romantic side. Light pink, red, and white scented candles around the bedroom and scatter rose petals on and around the bed. Purchase or make your own Valentine’s Day themed diary. Starting today, write daily diary entries addressed to your lover, detailing what you love about them and why. Sign each diary entry with a kiss. On Valentine’s Day, give your sweetheart the diary and let them read about all the ways you love them. For Valentine’s Day this year, use creativity and thoughtfulness to show your love for a special someone. A coupon book full of romantic gestures like a candlelit dinner or a romantic movie night would be a perfect gift. Perhaps a CD of your favorite love songs, or a romantic scavenger hunt that ends in a quiet dinner for two. Flowers and chocolates are the Valentine’s Day norm, so this year set yourself apart and show them your romantic side by being unique and creative. AM by Nikki Albert
Although little is known about the actual origins of Valentine’s Day, it has always been a day that celebrates love. The modern convention dictates that flowers, jewelry, or candy be given to honor a special someone. The more ancient traditions of Valentine’s Day involve an exchange of handwritten notes or cards between lovers. This year, show the special someone in your life how much they mean to you this Valentine’s Day with some simply wonderful Valentine’s Day gifts. Valentine’s Day gifts do not have to be expensive or extravagant. A simple but luxurious way to please your sweetheart on Valentine’s Day is to draw a romantic bath for them. Since Valentine’s Day falls ALPHARETTA MAGAZINE

How Can a Resolution Resolve? Imagine that all your resolutions came true. Would that be okay or scary? Much has been said about accomplishing goals/resolutions so it is almost annoying to bring this up! Yet during our lives, there are many goals that we meet. Success is when we set out to do something and then accomplish it. Our brain works in pictures so there is a visual component; we see it in our mind, we set out to do what we saw, and then we either do it or don’t. As I evaluated my own goals, I determined that I was less likely to be successful if it meant doing something I did not want to do; I began well and then reverted to old, comfortable ways. This happens because we crave routine. I do not know how to make you successful with your own resolutions but I have a few suggestions. Evaluate honestly if you really want the results that the change would bring; can you handle the reality of the success? If the answer is yes, next get an image in your mind of how the change looks in completion. How does it feel? Commit to it. Now write down what the end product is and tell someone about it. Very important – phrase your goal in the positive. Positive reinforcement will get you to your goals much quicker than negative thoughts or comments. Finally, schedule the change into your normal routine. Mark your action steps on your calendar. These steps work only if you want to succeed and are determined to do the work.

A Good Steak Is A Rare Find
If you want to end up eating a great steak, there is no other way to do it than by starting with one that is already great. Unfortunately, it can be rather difficult to determine whether or not a steak at the market is of high quality. There are plenty to choose from, but if you do not know what you are looking for, finding the best one will be pretty tricky. Here are a few things to look for when you go steak shopping that will help you get a better result.
There are multiple different cuts of meat out there, and some of them make better steaks than others. There are three main sections for steak - the rib, short loin, and tenderloin. They are going to cook up differently, depending on what area of the animal they come from. The rib, for instance, is the least tender, and you will need to cook it longer and with more attention to tenderizing than you would when deciding how to cook a New York strip steak.
Make sure you pay attention to what grade the meat is. Generally, grading is done by a third party organization, or an agency like the USDA, and is determined by how old the animal is and how well marbled the fat is. Major US grades are prime, choice, and select, among consumers, with prime being the highest quality and select the lowest quality.
The short loin produces familiar high quality steaks, including T-bone, Porterhouse, top loin, and tenderloin. You may also see round, chuck, and flank meat described as steak, but you will probably want to cook them as stew, not as a steak, due to their toughness.
Other grades exist, but they are sold mostly to commercial users. It can be pretty hard to find prime beef, so most of us will be eating choice steaks. Try some choice and some select steaks and see if you can taste the difference between the two grades. Marbling is a factor traditionally used to determine the quality of a steak. Leaner meat will have little fat and be more tender, but much less flavorful. Streaks of fat generally produce steaks that have more taste to them. However, many people are discovering that other factors influence taste as much or more than marbling. For instance, raising the cattle on grass instead of grain seems to result in a steak with more taste, even though it has less attractive marbling.
Pick the best steak to begin with, then find a method of cooking that suits. In the end, you will be much happier with the results you get. No marinade, no matter how good, will fix a bad steak, but a good one will make a great steak the best one possible. AM by Gus Durant

CURLS GONE WILD be the new ceramic curling irons. They are now fairly reasonably priced and are far less damaging to your hair. The ceramic heats up more evenly and is gentler to your hair by helping preserve the natural moisture. It also results in shinier hair as it tends to glide through better. Some things to look for in curling irons: - Buy a curling iron with a power cord that rotates. You will not get all tangled up and your task will go much quicker. - Curling irons with a rechargeable battery are great not just for travel but at home. - Look for a curling iron with a protective case that is heat resistant. I find this a great place to put my iron right after I’m done even if it is still hot and I do not have to worry about my kids touching it. - If you have medium to long hair with bangs, purchase a curler with at least 2 different size attachments. Use the smaller barrel for
shorter hair and the larger one for back and sides. With just a small curling barrel it will take you forever. FHI curling irons are known for their technology. They are also one of the fastest heating styling appliances in the FHI hair care line. In addition to that, you won’t have to guess the temperature of the curling iron because they provide an LCD display. There are different settings on this curling iron that allow you to create loose tight or loose curl hair styles.
Curling Iron Tips - Always use curling irons on dry and clean hair. The hot curling iron on damp hair opens the cuticle and damages the cortex. - Hold curling iron for about 10 seconds or as recommended and gently remove. Do not comb hair after but just use your fingers to loosen. Whether you’ve always had curly hair, have recently had a perm, or even if you’re trying to learn to work with curly hair for your child’s sake, you are facing a bit of a challenge, but one that is doable. From large, loose waves to kinky ringlets, locks with curls can require more work to look good than straighter styles. In order for this type of hair to look good, it must be kept healthy and free from damage and split ends. The curlier the hair, the more you’ll need a good detangling conditioner. Fortunately, there are techniques and products designed just for you.
Purchase a good curling iron. Curling irons give to better control over where and how much curl you want. Also, if you are looking to keep up with the trends like crimping or spiral curls or the newer fancy styles you can get a special attachment. You can also get several different types of curling irons. From the older, most commonly used chrome-plated irons to gold-plated ones and of course the newest technology, ceramic. If you only occasionally curl your hair, the chrome plated irons should be fine, but if you have thick or coarse hair you may prefer the gold-plated ones as they can achieve a higher temperature. My highest recommendation would

- A natural way to get a head of soft waves is to braid your hair when wet and let it fully dry that way. Or you can braid your hair when dry and just leave the braids overnight. Undo braids and gently comb with your fingers and presto - gorgeous waves. If you are going to style your curly hair, you should always moisturize it first before applying any styling product. This way, you will be able to reduce static and frizz. Never sleep while your hair is still wet because you will certainly wake up with curls that are wild and beyond your control. AM by Amy Key

Ring in the New Year The ritual of the wedding proposal and the presentation of the diamond engagement ring create the highlight event of any courtship. A tradition that dates back to the ancient Romans, the engagement ring itself has many layers of symbolism. Each piece of the ring is a strong symbol communicating key information about herself, her partner and their relationship.
prominence, trumping the gold standard for engagement rings. The rarity and expense of platinum makes it an attractive alternative to gold, even white gold. The durability of platinum is possibly its most endearing quality – a metal that will stand up to dents and scratches over the lifetime of the engagement ring and the marriage, with the ability to maintain its original beauty.
The Band The first symbol is no mystery – most people know the wedding band represents the eternal circle, and the same principle applies to the engagement ring. The symbol of the unending circle with no beginning and no end, illustrates eternal love.
The Shape of the Diamond The shape of the diamond is the only element of the ring that is a direct reflection of the bride-to-be’s personality. There are six to eight common shapes to choose from, and each sends a very different message.
The band of the engagement ring has changed in the last century – at least, the metal used for the band has. The warmth of gold has been a standard for eons, but today, couples have several readily available options. In the last few years, platinum has been gaining in popularity and
The round diamond is very classic and traditional. The princess cut, in contrast, communicates the message of a woman with a strong sense of style. The princess cut can have a more “bling” quality to it – the way the diamond is cut reflects light in a way that contributes to a more brilliant quality.

stood the test of time in the design of diamond engagement rings. And while the single diamond in the pronged Tiffany-style setting remains popular, the three-stone ring is giving the solitaire some competition.
The Stone The diamond in an engagement ring is another symbol of purity, endurance and longevity. A rare and precious stone, diamonds come from the earth and literally take billions of years to form. A gem stone that can only be scratched by one of its own, the popularity of diamonds in engagement rings can be linked to the association between the strength and durability of a diamond and the same in a marriage.
While the solitaire ring represents the idea of a solitary true love, the three-stone ring’s symbolism – a couple’s past, present and future – works as an engagement ring or an anniversary ring. Either way, the standard for a three-stone ring is a central diamond more prominently displayed by two slightly smaller diamonds. However, some brides prefer to have a different gem on either side of the diamond.
While the “4 C’s” have been the clear guidelines for choosing a quality diamond, today’s brides, thirsty for originality, are choosing alternative gems for their engagement rings. Whether motivated by their birthstones, or personal preference for something other than a diamond, brides are choosing everything from rubies to opals for their engagement ring stone. Solitare vs. Three-Stone The diamond solitaire engagement ring is another tradition that has
The beauty and importance of the engagement ring began centuries ago, but the engagement ring and ritual we know today is believed to have started in 1477 when Archduke Maximilian presented an engagement ring to Mary of Burgandy. Through world wars, the rise and fall of empires, the evolution of cultures and emergence of technologies, the individual symbols and collective representation of the engagement ring have not much deviated from tradition. Home Expressions “We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year’s Day.” -Edith Lovejoy Pierce
I love the blank page of the New Year. It is an opportunity to not only clean out closets and pantries but to also move forward with new ideas and designs for the upcoming year. I often see a huge surge in traffic the first week of the year with people feeling invigorated after the holidays and ready to move into the New Year by updating their homes. With the current housing market, I believe it is a year to move forward in investing in your home to stay competitive as well as simply placing a new enjoyment on being at home. 2009 has created ample opportunity for people to reinvent themselves and move in different directions towards a new decade with newly defined priorities. 2010 will be a time for a new attitude,
to face issues head on, and refresh our lives like a good cleaning. Color trends for 2010 remain calm at home but with the addition of daring splashes of color and metallics to the neutral palette. Organic hues are being carried over from the exceeding desire to go “green”. These colors, once referred to as earth tones, are being used in more subtle but saturated tones of gold, gray, mushroom, cream and earth brown. Added depth is achieved with coral, berry, plum, and heather, even blue, and yes- a new shade of mauve is back! Consider uncluttering your life today… however trendy is not always best. Too trendy is soon passé. Focus on classic clean lines, warm cozy colors and touches of fun and remember a qualified Interior Designer can help find the balance that is right for you!! MAN CAVES A popular trend over the last several years is to appoint a room as a spot where sports memorabilia can freely flow and a wall hanging featuring dogs playing poker is considered high art. It’s called by some a “man room”, or a “man cave”. Whatever it’s called, there is normally a common theme: no wives allowed.
Metal wall hangings will add a touch of classy décor that is also very masculine. Hang one on either side of the flat screen to help make that wall the focal point of the room (as if the flat panel television wasn’t already the focal point). Also, since many man caves are relegated to a smaller room, using mirrors can help make the room appear larger.
These rooms are used by men to display items not typically allowed in most living rooms: football jerseys, car posters, airplane models etc...It’s a place to play poker, watch sports and spend time practicing the ancient art of male bonding.
One of the most important features of a man cave is the sound quality. I highly recommend calling the professionals in on this one. What’s the point of having a 72 inch plasma if you can’t hear it properly from the rear recliner? (I’m starting to sound like my husband.) If it’s electronic, the team at Alpharetta’s Benchmark Soundworks (770-753-9009 or www.benchmarksoundworks.com) can do it. Surround-sound, t.v. installation, speakers, and what my husband would call tricked-out lighting plus anything else you can possibly imagine is well within their capabilities. Imagine his surprise when he turns on the remote and hears the game from every angle of his cave.
That said, there is no good reason that a loving wife can’t make her mark upon a man room. Of course, you’ll want to leave the flowers and frill for the rest of the house, but there are some touches you can make that your husband will appreciate, even if he won’t admit it. A typical cave domain will have neon lights, sports heroes, framed of course, and a bar, instead of the simple cooler with iced down brews. An area designated for entertaining the guys and the tools and toys area are a must have for the proper décor. However, there are still things you can do to the room that he will appreciate. I do not recommend making these changes during the game, however, during his next golf outing may be just enough time to make minor touches.
Man caves have become quite popular from the standpoint of décor and the personalizing of the domain with the latest electronics, game tables, and other manly furniture. These caves have become a fashion statement for the male species. Sprucing up the man room is a nice surprise for your husband as long as you keep in mind HIS taste and vision for what the room should look like. Remember that the point of the room is so that he can have his own space. However, tasteful, masculine choices can allow the room to blend well with the rest of your home while also letting his taste reign. AM by Amber Morale

Questions and Answers With Dr. Kenneth Sands, M.D.
Dr. Sands was the first surgeon in Georgia to perform a modern metal-on-metal total hip resurfacing and the first surgeon in Northwest Georgia to perform the Oxford Knee. What is hip resurfacing? Hip resurfacing is an alternative to total hip replacement. The advantages of hip resurfacing are that it is bone sparing, potentially a faster recovery and a decreased risk of dislocation. Instead of cutting off the head and neck of the thigh bone (femur), we remove the arthritic portion and place a metal cap over the bone. This metal cap then articulates with a metal cup that we place in the pelvis.
How do you know if you have hip arthritis? A lot of times young patients mistake arthritis pain for muscle pain. Patients report feeling like they pulled a groin muscle. Some patients have even had hernia repairs not realizing that their pain was coming from their hip. In the end, an evaluation by an orthopaedic surgeon will let you know if you are right for the surgery.
How have your results been with the Birmingham Hip? I have been very pleased with our early results. The recov-
How did you become involved with the Birmingham ery time has been faster. Most of my patients return to work Hip Resurfacing? within 6 weeks, and return to their sport of choice within 3 – 6 When the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing system gained FDA approval, the parent company Smith and Nephew selected approximately 50 surgeons across the United States to develop early centers for hip resurfacing. Initially, we were the only surgeons FDA approved to perform the surgery. However, over the last 3 ½ years I have trained numerous other surgeons throughout the United States.
What are the advantages of total hip resurfacing? The main advantage is that the patient keeps more of their own bone. Traditional total hip surgeries over the long term suffer from stress shielding which leads to loss of bone. This condition generally complicates future revision surgery. Another advantage is decreased chance of dislocation. The hip is a ball in socket joint. Hip resurfacing allows the surgeon to use a larger ball that mimics the patient’s natural hip head size. Lastly, patients with hip resurfacings tend to return to more active lifestyles.
Who is a candidate for total hip resurfacing? Hip resurfacing is intended for young, active adults with degenerative joint disease of their hip. In general, men under the age of 60, or very active men under the age of 65, and females younger than 55 are good candidates. Patients with a history of osteoporosis or obesity are not good candidates.
months. I also find that my patients with hip resurfacings tend to have less pain. Only time will tell how successful this procedure will become. Hip resurfacing accounts for about 20% of my total hip practice. I think it is important to remember that hip resurfacing is not ideal for every patient, and the operation is more technically demanding than a traditional total hip surgery. However, with good patient selection and experience, I think hip resurfacing with the Birmingham Hip is an excellent choice.

New Year’s Resolutions It’s that time of year again when we resolve to improve our lives and the lives of those around us. We all have different resolutions, but they all tend to fall into four categories: - Get Healthy - Get Financially Fit - Self Improvement - Improve Family/Relationships
Get Healthy This is the most common category that our resolutions fall under, with losing weight being the most popular. Our goal may be to lose 20 pounds, get rid of that gut or to fit into those jeans in the back of our closet. We may decide to join the gym, diet for a month or change our eating habits to get and keep that weight off. The plan may be to get to the gym three days a week or walk/run fifteen miles a week. A marathon this year sounds like a good idea. Giving up or cutting back on one of our vices is another one of our most common resolutions. For those of us who still smoke, this is when we decide to give that up. Quitting drinking or drugs is another
vice we try to get rid of as well. For some of us, caffeine may be our drug. This year, we are going to skip that third cup of coffee.
Get Financially Fit We’ve all just spent more money on the holidays than we wanted to and are reviewing our finances from the past year. What happened to all that money? This coming year, we are going to save more money, spend less, pay off our debt, and get our finances organized so that we know where all that money went. We are going to setup a budget and stick to it!
Self Improvement Now is the time to get rid of those traits that we don’t like; we are going to stop procrastinating and be more patient and relaxed. Many are making resolutions to go back to school and learn something new. We all have something about ourselves that we are going to improve.
Improve Family/Relationships Spending more time with family and those that we love has always been important and at this time of year, we are designing ways to find additional quality time with our loved ones. Date night once a month, family night once a week and less overtime at the office is the plan for this year for many. Let’s hope we all follow through on our resolutions and improve life for each and every one of us. Whatever your resolution is, good luck! AM by Lee Sumlin

MANY HAPPY RETURNS?
carry a 15 percent restocking fee unless you exchange the item for another item from the electronics department. DVDs, CDs and video games cannot be returned at all after opening. However, if all else fails, see a Supervisor. The higher you go in the management chain, the more likely you are to fnd someone who realizes that I am familiar with this store and that if I’m treated right, I’ll return. Christmas is a special time to show your loved ones that you care and with all of the options today, you may want to consider a gift voucher next time where there is no threat of disappointment. Gift cards are becoming more and more popular every year. They provide a no-mistake scenario for those of us who have picky recipients. Gift cards, however, do not let the recipient know that you took the time to pick out something that you thought they would really like. Thankfully for both the giver and the recipient, returning gifts is no longer the hassle it once was.
It’s the thought that counts, but what were they thinking!
I’m keeping the mystery pants by the way. Two more sessions with my new personal trainer and I’ll be able to get one leg in. What was he thinking? AM by Janet Cole
Santa is exhausted. He’s been to every house (in one night) and has filled the bags of happy recipients with nothing but dream gifts. Well almost. I didn’t really want an automatic twirling spaghetti fork. This flashing belt is great, but I’ll never find a pair of shoes to match. So, now is the hard part; returning those less than perfect gifts that we’ve received this holiday season. It wasn’t Santa’s fault. Someone had good intentions, but just wasn’t thinking properly when they wrapped this Chia pet. It’s great…I’ve seen the commercials, I just don’t know where to put it. These pants my husband bought me are so small I’m starting to think he’s seeing someone else and got our packages mixed up. I haven’t been that size since college. Maybe it was a hint since we both joined the gym a few weeks after Thanksgiving. Returning gifts doesn’t have to be as stressful as choosing gifts. You do need to know store policies, deadlines and how to get around the rules if needed to return unwanted or nonworking gifts. Stores such as Walmart and Target will likely see more returns this Christmas than any other retailer. These stores are great for gift giving and have been very reasonable when you have a return.
ALPHARETTA MAGAZINE
If the purchase was made online, it may be returned online or through the mail. The receipt is required for a cash refund. Otherwise, the purchase will be applied to a store gift card. If you have a gift you absolutely hate but don’t want the giver to know you’re returning it, a store scanner at the Customer Service desk will be able to tell you if it was purchased at one of the mega retailers. Electronics have the most stringent return policies. These items must be returned unopened within 15 days of purchase or, in the case of Christmas gifts, 15 days of the holiday. Camcorders and digital cameras may be returned up to 30 days of purchase (or Christmas). Do not open these gifts until you’re sure you want to keep it, as some may not be returned after the package has been opened. Other products will carry a restocking fee. Other items like clothing may be returned up to 45 days after the gift was given. I usually return items around Dec. 29. The lines at the return register have thinned down quite a bit by then. If you go on Dec. 26, you may end up waiting in line for an hour even if you’re just getting your money back J.C. Penney also allows customers to return online purchases at the nearest retailer; in fact, they encourage it. With a reciept, you can expect cash back as long as you return it in 90 days. If you have a receipt, returning products at Sears can be a very easy process. You have 90 days on most items. The only hurdle I found with their policy was with electronics including televisions which

PLASMA VS. LCD
2nd tier brands offer poor servicing should something go wrong. Some charge you the freight to either ship the TV to them or back after repair. One brand I found offers no parts after the one year warranty is up, so in effect it is a throw-away TV. Higher end TV’s have better video processors for upconverting and reducing digital noise. For these reasons I believe that top tier brands are the best way to go even though there is a higher initial cost. My top recommendation would be the LG. LG Electronics is one ods) and most plasmas are considerably heavier than LCDs. Longevity is always important when making such an investment. You could count on at least 20 years for an LCD TV screen life, and a good 10 years for the Plasma screen life. In other words, you’ll probably purchase a new car before you have to consider getting a new television. When purchasing an HDTV you will see familiar top level brands such as Sony, Vizio, Samsung, Panasonic, Toshiba, Pioneer, etc. Then you will see 2nd tier brands that sell at substantial discounts to the top brands. I recommend only top tier brands for several reasons. One is that many of these
You want a flat screen TV that’s HD ready and you have heard about LCD and Plasma TV’s, but which is better, LCD or Plasma? What is the difference? LCD (liquid crystal display) - LCD TVs are becoming the most popular technology. They have many advantages such as low power consumption and the ability to display the highest resolutions (1080p). LCDs are flat and many are wall mountable but need to be properly installed or mounted. Benchmark Soundworks in Alpharetta does a good job of not only installing and mounting your new purchase, but also upgrading your sound system for a complete theater experience. Once you have an LCD on the wall and a remote in hand you are in for a new and improved TV experience. There are a few disadvantages of an LCD. For example,
of the world’s largest electronics manufacturers, producing a large range of consumer electronics and IT products. LG has created a reputation for progressive technology and innovation with the latest technological developments in consumer electronics, home appliances and IT products and their televisions are no exception. The LG 42SL80 42 inch 240 Hz television will run about $950, but the quality and service that comes with this television is unrivaled.
their ability to show contrast is less than other technologies like plasma. LCDs in the past were also slower to refresh (not so with the current models). These disadvantages are quickly disappearing. Today’s LCD HDTVs have greatly improved on contrast and refresh speed. The latest and greatest LCD technology is 240HZ which is supposed to do what 120Hz does, but better. Most LCDs are silent with no moving parts or fans. LCD’s are brighter than Plasma HDTVs and are better suited in well lit rooms during the day than plasmas. Plasma displays are extraordinarily popular as well. They have higher contrast than LCDs (although that gap is closing), and can display HDTV with stunning clarity. Plasma sets also display fast action (sports, action movies) better. The disadvantages of plasma are that they take more electricity than LCDs, and can generate more heat and a higher electric bill. Plasma screens are susceptible to screen burn-in (new models compensate with various screen-saving meth-

Roses also need regular care to keep insects and disease at bay. An insecticidal soap spray will keep away Aphids and Whiteflies. An organic fungicide spray will keep away Black spot, a disease very common to roses. If you have an irrigation system try to keep the roses away from the direct spray, as roses do not like wet leaves and will also not flower as well. If you keep a scheduled maintenance for insect and disease prevention, the care becomes very easy. If one waits until there is an infestation of one sort or another, it is much more difficult to eradicate the problem. The old adage “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” definitely applies to the delicate beauties.
Roses are one of the most beautiful flowers in the garden. They can also be one of the most difficult to grow. Caring for roses may take some time, but the rewards are worth it.
When pruning your roses, or simply clipping some for a vase, be sure to use good sharp pruning shears. Dull shears can tear the stems, leaving ugly dark marks. It also leaves a larger open wound for disease and insects to feast on. It can even inhibit new growth. When pruning a rose, prune just above a leaf node. This will encourage the plant to grow bushy and thick. Leaving long stems will make the plant lanky.
There are many, many different types of Roses. Tea, Grandiflora, Floribunda, Old English, Ramblers, Climbers, Miniature, etc. Many of the newer hybrid varieties will bloom off and on throughout the growing season, while others have one spectacular show, with intermittent flowers later on. The “Knock Out” variety rose is a vigorous grower with fantastic flowers all season. Roses have very particular needs. Roses need a minimum of 6 hours of sunlight per day. They also like well drained soil. The soil around their roots should be kept loose by cultivating often. This brings necessary oxygen to the roots of the plants. They also like to be fed a good organic fertilizer regularly and mulched around the base of the plant to help keep the roots cool in the heat of summer and warm in winter.
A Rose by Any Other Name...
Roses look beautiful in both formal and informal gardens. They coincide well with perennials such as Lavender and Black Eyed Susan, they mix well in the Herb garden as well as an accent to Evergreens. A Rose Tree will make an outstanding centerpiece in any garden or as a focal point at an entry. Roses have been revered by many generations of gardeners and nongardeners alike. The beauty of these flowers will enhance the look of your home year after year. As we approach Valentine’s Day, be sure to take the time to smell the roses. AM Stanley Monroe

Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee Has A New Home In Cumming Georgia
Local resident has family ties to Jamaican coffee industry and sells coffee to roasters and consumers worldwide. Edgar Munn grew up in the Blue Mountains of Jamaica playing at his grandparent’s coffee factory; today he makes his home in Cumming, GA and spends his days roasting the famed Blue Mountain coffee in his own roastery. Blue Mountain Coffee is world renown and has been recognized for its quality and continues to be in high demand by connoisseurs and distinguished coffee houses the world over. To ensure that consumers get value and quality, the Jamaican coffee industry has legislation in place demarcating the geographical boundaries, which define the coffee classified as Jamaican Blue Mountain®. This is reinforced by rigid inspection of the Jamaican Coffee Industry Board that certifies production and export of Jamaican Coffee. Edgar Munn is approved by the Coffee Industry Board to import and sell Jamaica Blue Mountain® Coffee as per the Trademark Licensing agreement. He trades under Blue Mountain Coffee, Inc. as the Mavis Bank Coffee Factory Representative for North America. Prior to opening the roastery in Cumming, Edgar and Christine Munn have been selling Blue Mountain Coffee for over 20 years, importing and selling green beans to roasters around the world. They have also been selling roasted coffee on the Internet but now, they are roasting and packing it fresh in Cumming. “Importing coffee roasted in Jamaica has become too difficult”’ according to Munn. “It often takes several weeks for the Coffee Industry Board to approve the shipments, the US Customs often damages the coffee while they are inspecting it, and the shipping costs keep rising.” The roastery, located at 4250 Keith Bridge Road, exists primarily to roast coffee and fulfill orders sold on their sites: www.bluemountaincoffee.com, www.jablum.com, and www.Munnsworldcoffee.com. The Cumming location also has a small showroom where local customers may purchase freshly roasted JBM and selected other world coffees. Custom Coffee Gift Box Baskets are also available, providing the public the opportunity to design unique gifts on site. Contract roasting and private label roasting also available. Mavis Bank Coffee Factory has been featured regularly on the Travel Channel and Excursions TV. Edgar Munn finds the climate of the north Georgia mountains reminiscent of the Jamaica Blue Mountains, and is proud to call Cumming, GA his home. Hours: Monday - Friday 9:00 am -5:00 pm, Saturday by appointment, Closed Sunday.

Super Punch Bowl
Combine first three ingredients and simmer for 30 minutes. Remove from heat and cool for 15 minutes. Add one bottle Everclear. Simmer on stove to re-warm. Do not boil! Serve in coffee mug. “MVP Martini” 1/2 ounce Maraschino Liqueur 2 ounces Vodka 2 ounces Pear Nectar Juice 1 Maraschino Cherry for garnish Put liqueur and juice into cocktail shaker with ice. Stir and strain into martini cocktail glass. Garnish with cherry. How sweet it is! Time for the ultimate sports weekend. The teams have fought all year to make it to this big stage of gladiator football and finally it’s here for us to enjoy. This year the Super Bowl will be played on Sunday, February 7, 2010 - at Dolphin Stadium in Miami, Florida. It will be broadcast on CBS which lists the start time at 6:30 p.m. and like pseudo holidays, the games are savored by a gazillion fans nationwide -- from season ticket holders and the football faithful to those weekend watchers who barely know the difference between a touchdown and a touchback. Where will YOU be during this season of pigskin popularity, promotions and party-going? Most of us will be watching the action on TV -- surrounded by traditional TV-watching fare like cheeses, chili, chips and dips, ribs, wings, salads, tacos, burgers and bratwurst. What will everybody be drinking with those tasty treats? Beer is the obvious answer however whether you’re tailgating in Miami, partying in Buckhead, bar-hopping in Atlanta, or meeting up with friends
in Alpharetta, you may want to toast your favorite team with something saucier. Of course we’re talking about wine, the libation that traditionally cascades (think champagne!) throughout every winning locker room.
bash. And that’s just the beginning. You’ll also want to include flavorsome “mocktails” for the under-21 crowd and all those designated drivers.
Now’s the time to prepare what you’ll serve or order in the way of wonderful liqueurs and wine cocktails, in all their diversity and delectability. You’ll want to know about the reds, whites and rosés, spritzers, cocktails, punches, ciders and hot toddies that will score at your football

Some football-esque wine creations that will make the best splash at your championship celebration: “Quarterback Sack Punch” 1 gallon apple cider 1 cup sugar 4 cinnamon sticks 1 bottle (or less) Everclear (190 proof grain alcohol)
“No Penalty Pina Colada” (non-alcoholic) 2 cups Fresh Cubed Pineapple 1/2 cup Pineapple Juice 1/4 cup Cream of Coconut 1 cup ice cubes 1 cup Vanilla Ice Cream Combine juice and cream in blender. With the motor running add the pineapple and ice. Process until smooth. Add ice cream and process until smooth. Makes one blender full. “Turnover Toddy” 7 ounces Hot Tea 1 tablespoon Honey 1 teaspoon Lemon Juice Pinches of Cinnamon, Ground Cloves and Nutmeg Lemon Wedge for garnish In an Irish Coffee Glass, pour honey, lemon juice and spices. Top with hot tea and stir. Garnish with lemon.
Here’s information to know about “Super Wines”… including three wines that are team players for any Super Bowl match-up. They’re universal and go with all the foods you’ll be serving at your tailgate get-together or while sitting around the televised game: Dry Riesling –-(dry white wine). Rieslings come in different sweetness levels. If you’re choosing a domestic Riesling, very often the label will indicate “dry.” If it’s a German Riesling, look for the words “Trocken” or “Kabinett.” Pinot Noir -–(dry red wine). Not as heavy or tannic as a Cabernet Sauvignon, it’s equally at home with barbecue ribs or veggies and ranch dip. Advice: Do not try to get by with the cheap ones. Because the Pinot Noir grape is temperamental and sensitive to climate conditions, it’s expensive to produce. Champagne --(sparkling wine). This is a celebratory drink, but you don’t have to win to enjoy it. Champagne is the life of every party! Top off your pro football celebrations with a dessert wine that’s sure to score with your guests. We can recommend any of these flavorful, “late” harvest wines and fortified wines ideal for desserts: Sauternes, Barsac, Beerenauslese, Tokay, Madiera, Port, or Sherry. Inchins Bamboo Garden & Tadka Restaurants
Tadka was born with the idea of filling the void in Atlanta’s fine dining Indian Cuisine. Atlanta has a number of Indian cuisine restaurants but none have the ambience or the food that are close to the ‘originals’ in India. Along with Tadka is the now famous Inchin’s Bamboo Garden. Housed under the same roof, both are specialty restaurants serving authentic cuisines. There is an extensive lunch buffet everyday and over the weekends there is ‘live’ cooking. Chefs come out of their kitchens and demonstrate their skills while preparing food to meet your individual tastes. There is a wide variety of food on display from all regions of India. Tadka has been modeled on the lines of a 5 Star Hotel restaurant in India which continues to be on the list of top 100 restaurants of the world! To keep the flavor of food as close and satisfying as the mentor it was necessary to get the right ingredients. The same has been achieved by directly importing most of the key inputs from India.

Help stay on track with your New Year’s resolutions by enjoying a wonderful daytime treat… A Fruit Salad. Slice up some strawberries, kiwi, apples, pineapple, and grapes, put it in a bowl and let it chill in the refrigerator for about an hour.
l
Try adding nuts for more crunch or raisins to make it nice and chewy. It’s a beautiful salad and very healthy. Try different fruit combinations each time you make your fruit salad.

You’ll be surprised at how unique and wonderful a natural treat like fruit can be. AM By Susan Durant
